Final TGIF Jazz in the Parks Concert For the 2013 Season

Held August 23rd featuring Big Time Operator!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3939 -     This past Friday night, my wife, a neighbor and myself attended the final TGIF Jazz in the Parks concert in Carlsbad, California.

I had blogged about the then upcoming 2013 Season back in blog #3893, which listed the parks and the featured bands.

The final concert of the season featured Big Time Operator, who played at the TGIF for the 13th time during all those 28 seasons!

Once again this band outdid themselves, and I was glad they were featured as the last band of the 2013 Season!

I'm uploading the rest of the photos I shot at a special photo album at my Facebook Fan Page.

Besides vocalist Warren Lovell, there was also a female singer on Friday. (I didn't catch her name).

I'll be uploading videos taken at this concert at my YouTube Channel in the near future.

My thanks to the band for a great final evening to this 2013 TGIF Jazz in the Parks Season.

Plus my thanks to all of those that had a hand in putting on this 28th Season of the TGIF Jazz in the Parks!

And a Special Thanks to Vikki, Joe & Tina for bringing such delicious eats all season long!  The lobster rolls, cole slaw, and special pie last Friday was a fantastic combination!

~Michael

Read Comics In Public Day Event... In San Diego!

Hosted by Chriss Cornish

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3938 -     This past Saturday, my wife, youngest son, and I attended the 2013 Read Comics In Public Day event in San Diego, California.

Chriss Cornish is the host of the San Diego event each year, and for the past three years it has been held outside of the Starbucks on Genesee Avenue

Tina, Vinnie and myself arrived a little early, took a few photos with Chriss, (see above top right photo), and picked up some Coffee.

Chriss taped us for her podcast, which can found at ComicsSquee.com.  She and two others have just started this podcast, which I invite you to check out.

Robert Scott, owner of Comickaze Comics nearby was an early attendee, and others also came and went during the early morning hours.  In fact, us three left a little after noontime, although the event went on till 3PM.

Still, we had time to check out others offerings that they brought, and I was thanked for the short box of comics that I brought as a giveaway to those that attended.

My thanks to Chriss for hosting the 3rd annual event that she has held at this location.

Be sure to 'Like' her Facebook Fan Page for this event, and plan to join all of us next year in 2014!

~Michael

Attendees of this event brought comic books, TPBs, graphic novels, books on comics, and even artwork!

The event was held outside of Starbucks, and ebbed and flowed with attendees from 10 AM till 3PM!

HERO INITIATIVE CELEBRATES JACK (King) KIRBY’S 96th BIRTHDAY ON AUGUST 28TH...

With a little help from The King’s family!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3937 -   I received the following notice from the Hero Iniative people:

Hero has recruited over 40 artists to get up on the morning of August 28, 2013 to simply “Wake Up and Draw.” This event is a way for artists to celebrate the day by sending a “birthday card to Jack.” All drawings will be featured in a special gallery at ComicArtFans.com, and fans can follow the action through the day on Twitter searching hashtag: #WakeUpAndDraw. All drawings will be auctioned to benefit Hero Initiative at a later date!

Jillian Kirby, Jack’s granddaughter, has spearheaded the “Kirby4Heroes” campaign. Jillian has recruited a number of comic stores throughout the country to donate a percentage of their sales to Hero on this special day. Many retailers have decided to “celebrate” with their own ideas, including hosting a “birthday party” for Jack, auctioning off original artwork, as well as other activities; all proceeds will go to the Hero Initiative in the name of the Kirby4Heroes campaign. Activities will grow yearly as we approach Jack’s upcoming 100th birthday in 2017.

“I started the Kirby4Heroes campaign as a way to connect with my grandfather, who died the year before I was born,” said Jillian Kirby. “I’ve grown so much closer to him through my endeavors in this area. I have to admit I’m astounded by him as an artist, family member, and just as a kind human being. Raising funds for those in the comic book industry in need of financial and medical assistance is a cause my grandfather Jack would have championed. He never turned his back on a person in need.”

Fans can visit the official Kirby4Heroes campaign Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/kirby4heroes and donate via the PayPal link at www.HeroInitiative.org. Please type in “Kirby4Heroes” in the special instructions box. A new video detailing the Kirby4Heroes campaign is also available for viewing.

A list of participating stores includes:

Jesse James Comics, Glendale AZ
Flying Colors Comics, Concord CA
Lee's Comics, Mountain View CA
Alakazam Comics, Irvine CA
Mission: Comics and Art, San Francisco CA
Golden Apple Comics, Los Angeles CA
The Secret Headquarters, Los Angeles CA
A&M Comics, Miami FL
Chimera's Comics, Lagrange IL
Aw Yeah Comics, Skokie IL
Graham Crackers Comics, Plainfield IL
Alternate Reality Comics, Las Vegas NV
Paradise Comics, Toronto, Ontario
Floating World Comics, Portland OR
Austin Books & Comics, Austin TX

New stores are being recruited each week.

Thanks to Christina Joyce at Hero Initiative for sending this notice to me!

I've added a couple of photos of my own to the right... Journey Into Mystery, the comic book that got me started collecting comics instead of just reading them, thanks to Jack's artwork!

And what Jack looked like in 1991 when I took my young kids to see him at the San Diego Comic Con.  He passed away before the 1994 SDCC started...

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On...

Peachy Clinker Volume 1

Published by Clinker Comics / Jack Habegger

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3935 -     This month is the birthday of Jack Habegger, who is a young cartoonist that I have known for a while now.

I ran across him and his dad, Mark Habegger at the recent 2013 Comic-Con International: San Diego on Thursday.

Jack presented me with a copy of his Peachy Clinker Vol 1 comic book.

The comic book is actually a printing of the comic strips that Jack created for his online scholl newspaper, The Renaissance, at The Graurer School in Encinitas, California.

I found the presentation to be a fun one with fourteen strips printed.

Jack should be proud of this publication.  And I know that his dad, Mark is!

For more info on how you can obtain a copy of this, see Jack's Facebook Fan Page, Jack Habegger Artist!  You can also wish him a Happy Birthday on August 31st!
