Thor: The Dark World
A 2013 Film

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3978 -     Okay... I'm back from viewing the second of the Thor films from Marvel!

My previous review blog #3407 reviewed the May of 2011 Thor film.  Here's the link to that review. As you can see from reading that blog, I was totally surprised at the quality of that first film!

So what's my thoughts on this film?  Here goes...

First, if you are into previews, here's the link to the Wikipedia entry on the film.  SPOILER WARINING! It gives away a LOT of the film!

Secondly, I've gotta admit... The Storyline of this 2013 film was fantastic!

Not in the 'fantasy' fantastic sense of the word, but that it was a fantastically smoothly written screenplay!  The different locations were worked in properly, and the cutting of the film was done superbly!

The scenes and CGI were done very well, and not 'comic-booky' at all!   Very well directed and produced film in my opinion!

The cast were smoothly integrated and I was wrapped up in the film due to the storyline and the cast of characters!

Standouts in the film were Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Zachary Levi as Fandral, and Stan Lee as a patient in a mental ward, (Stan's cameo appearance)!

Of course I waited till the very end of the credits to see the final scene of the film.  That was both nice to see and also funny!

There was also a scene after the main credits were run.

All in all, this film was worth the money I paid to see it!  It was the meshing of the great storyline and the cast of characters that did it for me!

I would give it a NEAR MINT (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

I urge you to see this film, especially if you saw the first Thor film, or the Avengers film from last Summer!

~ Michael!

Asks... What's Happening With The 2015 Fantastic Four Film?

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS (GUEST) BLOG #3965 -     I've been pretty busy the last few weeks and haven't had a chance to check out what is happening with any comic book films to be released in the near future or later...

One film that did catch my attention earlier was the projected March of 2015 release of a new Fantastic Four film.

I've already blogged about the Roger Corman Film that wasn't released in theaters several times, and of course the two that were released years later.  Here's an index link to those posts.

So what is going on with the upcoming film?

Here is a link to the IMDb web site for this film.  As you can see, there isn't much there at all!

The release date is scheduled to be March 6th of 2015.  The director is Josh Trank, and the writers are doing revisions. Allison Williams auditioned for the role of the Invisible Woman. IMDb hasn't updated this web page since April of this year.

So I also checked other web pages and found the following:

The first two films that were released, in 2005 and 2007, will be ignored.  Which is a shame, because I liked those films.

The character roles have not been cast of yet.  Looked at for the role of Mr. Fantastic: David Tennant, Adrien Brody, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.  Probably others as well.

The Invisible Woman role has been looked at by Allison Williams, and Alice Eve.

The Human Torch role has Michael B Jordan as a posibility.

No mention of anyone for Ben Grimm / The Thing as of yet.

As of October 2nd, (yesterday), Simon Kinberg has been brought in to re-write the film.

A big change in shooting location... Instead of Vancouver, the film will be shot in Louisiana, due to a massive State tax credit.

So it looks like we have quite a ways to go before anything definite will be announced!

Stay 'tooned!

~ Michael

The Wolverine: A Woman's Point of View

TODAY'S FEATURE IS (GUEST) BLOG #3916 -     The Wolverine: A Woman's Point of View

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single (or married) woman in possession of a sound mind must love Hugh Jackman.

So Ladies, I completely understand your interest in "The Wolverine" which opened this weekend to rather solid reviews and good box office.

What you really want to know is:

How hot is Hugh Jackman in this Wolverine movie?

And, is it better than that awful "Origins" movie you got tricked into seeing a few years ago?

In a nutshell: plenty, and plenty.

"The Wolverine" delivers with plenty of shirtless Jackman, noticeably older, but he's still got the goods. Luckily this time around, he's also got plenty of action and a much more interesting, if confusing, story.

Bear with the beginning. "The Wolverine" toys with us at first. Not only must we endure the annoying Jean Grey (has he learned nothing?), but many valuable minutes of screen time are squandered on the Caveman version of Wolvervine who hasn't had a good night's sleep, or a bath or a shave in weeks, possibly months. The oiliness alone is enough to test a girl's devotion.

Logan's been dancing with bears in the Canadian Rockies trying to get over what happened with Jean. Tormented by dreams of Jean and nightmares of the bombing of Nagasaki, Logan is spotted by a zany, red-headed Japanese girl during an altercation with some nasty hunters in a local bar. Red-headed girl steps into the fight with her trusty sword and helps Wolverine dispatch the hunters. As the pair speed away in her car, you'll wonder how can she keep the windows up with Caveman Wolverine sitting beside her? Clearly she's never seen that Seinfeld episode. The smell doesn't not come out. Fortunately, in this case, the ride is a rental.

Red-headed girl Yukio (the very best thing in the movie next to Hugh Jackman), explains that her employer, Master of Industry, Yashida whom Wolverine saved from certain death at Nagasaki, is dying and wants to see him again before he passes. Yashida offers to give Logan what he wants most -- an ending to his eternal living and enduring the death of everyone he's ever loved -- in return for Yashida's own salvation.

At this point, the ladies in the audience finally get what we want: Logan gets a makeover at the hands of two stern-faced Japanese matrons who have the enviable job of bathing a beefed-up Hugh Jackman. The scene makes for some classic snarling Wolverine humor and is destined to be replayed and replayed by women everywhere once it's released on DVD.

Cleaned up Logan is a bit metrosexual as far as Wolverines go; less hairy and sans cigar and wisecracks, he is still plenty hot.

Logan becomes embroiled in a struggle involving Yashida's son, granddaughter, the Yakuza, a mutant doctor, and a slew of ninjas. Whose side is anyone on? Who can tell? It's confusing but fun with beautiful settings, lovely music and crazy fights amid shoji screens, a temple, the streets of Tokyo, and atop a bullet train.

My advice, don't worry too much about the story. (If you understand the ending, email me.) Keep your eye on Jackman and zany red-headed girl, she's the second best thing in a Wolverine movie since, well okay there's never been a second best thing in a Wolverine movie. But, she's fun and makes up for how weak her 'sister' is throughout most of the film.

Be sure to stay through the credits, there's more Jackman in a scene from the upcoming "X-Men: Days of Future Past".

Enjoy!

My rating: Very Fine  (VF) 8.0, (just like Jackman...)

~Tina LoSasso

Our Take On...

The Wolverine
(A 2013 Film)

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3915 -     We are back home after viewing the film titled 'The Woverine'... A 2013 film.

First of all, this review blog is just my youngest son's 'Take' & my own 'Take' on the film.  Tina's review blog will be posted later.

Here's Vinnie's Take on the film:

I took in the film with my dad and step-mother.  I know my dad enjoyed seeing it, and was actually quite surprised at that.  As for myself, I liked the film being in Japan.  There was quite a lot of scenery in that country in this film.

I thought it was strange that people seemed to keep changing their sides in the film.

I'm hard time expressing today what I thought about the film... I'll leave thathat for my Dad to discuss.

The rating I would give this film is a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

I would recommend this film to a fan of the Wolverine.  For those that like action films, I would suggest seeing this film also.

----------------------------------------------------

Michael:   Okay... So now here's my 'Take' on the film:

I've got to admit... I wasn't thinking this film would be that much fun.

Okay, I was wrong!

The film's storyline was superb!  The settings in North America and then in Japan made for an interesting backdrop for the scenes that were shown!

Here's a link to the Wikipedia entry for the film.  Please be advised that there are major spoilers all over the place though, at that entry!

I was fascinated with this 'Japanese Love Story', which is what it mostly appeared to me to be...

Yet there was plenty of action in this film as well!

The changing of 'sides' by the players in the film kept me interested in the plotline, and there was actually a lot of character development in this 2 hour 6 minute film.

Here's my thoughts on the actors:

Hugh Jackman as Logan / Wolverine: A superb acting role for Hugh!  He looked tough, acted tough, yet was well versed in making this also a 'love story'!

Tao Okamoto as Mariko Yashida, Yashida's granddaughter. - Very well played role.  I enjoyed seeing her and hearing her throughout her many scenes in the film.

Haruhiko Yamanouchi as Ichirō Yashida, the head of a Japanese technology empire. - Another well played role, exept for the ending, where the scene was just a little 'cartoonish'.  Not his fault, but the writer's / director's responsibility.

Hiroyuki Sanada as Shingen Yashida: Mariko's father - I found this role to be somewhat predictable.

Rila Fukushima as Yukio: one of the deadliest assassins in Shingen’s clan - I liked this actress, and found her scenes to be refreshing as well as being able to move the film along.

Will Yun Lee as Kenuichio Harada: a bodyguard of the Yashida family and a former lover of Mariko -  This role was kind of strangely portrayed... Yet I did like the actor playing the role, just that the role was kind of 'chopped' in parts.

Svetlana Khodchenkova as Viper: a mutant, who has an immunity to toxins - Kind of a strange villain... I'm not for sure what to think about her in this film.  But she did play a key role in the film as it progressed.

Famke Janssen as Jean Grey: a mutant and former member of the X-Men, who Logan killed at the end of X-Men: The Last Stand - Famke played a vital part in this film, in her many short scenes.  Well done!

There were others in the film, but I want to post this blog ASAP.

I give this film a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale grade.  I for one really enjoyed this film starring 'The Wolverine'.  So much more than the earlier solo Wolverine film.  If you are a fan of Wolverine... You should check it out at a Big Screen near You!

~Michael
