TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3909 -    Peek "Under The Dome" Tonight! - A San Diego Comic-Con 2013 Panel Report...

I wasn't sure if I wanted to fight the Comic-Con crowd to Sunday's panel for Under The Dome (CBS). I'd seen them at WonderCon (see my review here in blog #3829) so would it be worth another look? Five minutes in, I was sure glad I did. We were treated to a sneak peek of tonight's pivotal episode which was well worth braving the crowd.

If you've been on the fence about the CBS summer replacement series, now's the time to pick a side (or you may end up like that unfortunate cow).

Me - I'm all in.

Why? There was a moment in the episode when I turned to the stranger next to me and said, wow, now we have a show. She smiled broadly and nodded because I couldn't have heard her over the audience's roars of approval. I highly recommend that you watch tonight. Trust me, you'll know the moment. It will surprise and delight you.

There were more than a few awesome moments in this episode (thankfully, no cows) that made me feel that the writers were ready to cut the schlock and throw down.

Unfortunately, we still have annoying Angie to contend with - who after tonight's episode takes the crown from Junior as the reigning irritant.

Tonight's episode packs some surprises and some that you can see coming. Pay attention to the small touches and quiet moments. You'll find plenty to make you want to continue to peek Under the Dome each week.

My Take On: The Complete Steve Canyon On TV Volume 2 DVD!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3869 -    Back in blog #3827, I mentioned meeting John Ellis, (pictured above), who sat with me on a panel at the 2013 WonderCon.

After the WonderCon was over, (we were one of the last panels of the 3-day event),  John was one of those that went to the Marriott for a quick bite of dinner and a drink.

I've already review blogged the first DVD volume in this three volume set, and wanted to mention how good this second volume was... Continuing the goodness from volume one of the set.  This second volume contained episodes 13 - 24 of the first (and only) year of the TV show.

One of the features of this DVD is that the commercials that were aired with the show were also included in this DVD.  It is kind of cool to see those cigarette commericals, as those are no longer allowed on TV shows.

In addition, John is almost finished with Volume 3, so it should be released shortly.  He is already taking pre-orders for that volume.

If you haven't seen the TV show before, here is the Wikipedia link to it.

For John's blog, here is the link to that. You can see the info on where to order all three of the volumes there.

I thought I would mention this volume we finished viewing, as yesterday was Memorial Day, as I blogged about in blog #3868.  Although Steve Canyon's comic strip ended in 1988, shortly after the death of his creator, Milton Caniff, he lives on via reprints and now this DVD set.

Oh, and there are also several comic book publications that have been printed since 1948 on Steve Canyon.  Here is the link to the Grand Comics Database for those.

My thanks again to John Ellis, who turned us on to this great show via his DVD set!  Don't miss out on ordering a copy (or all three) for yourself!

~ Michael

Above is the Promo Image for the New TV Show!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3863 -    This blog could have been posted last week, when the trailer for the upcoming TV show was first released.  However, I've limited myself to blogging to no more than once a day at the most, and I have had a few other topics that came up for blogging before this one.

So... I first want to mention that the TV show that is written about in this Wikipedia entry, is one that I've already mentally bookmarked to watch during the 2013-2014 TV season!

That's because the trailer looks 'hot', and the info in the Wikipedia entry added to what the TV show should be about.

Being a long time comics fan of S.H.I.E.L.D.,  (started with Strange Tales #135 back in August of 1965), I've got to watch this show!

Yeah, while I am not fond of Nick Fury being re-cast ethnically in the Marvel Films, (even though Samuel L Jackson did a good job in the films role), I've got a fondness for this strip when it was penciled by Jack Kirby, and then Jim Steranko!

So I'm suggesting that you look at the trailer, the Wikipedia entry, and whatever else you need to sell yourself into watching this TV show series!

Oh, and be sure to 'Like' the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Facebook fan page!

I should be back the beginning of the new TV season with my review blog on the Premiere episode.  The show is to be broadcast on ABC on Tuesday nights at 8PM.

Till then, Don't Yield... Back S.H.I.E.L.D!

~ Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents My Take On...

Dallas

Season Two & the Season Two Finale

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3833 -    This morning I had another blog all ready to go for posting...

But after last night's Season Finale for Dallas, the new TV Show, I just woke up and had to blog about that Finale and my thoughts on the 2nd Season.  And No... I wasn't dreaming!  (See top left photo for that!)

Why a blog on this TV show?

Well... I'm a fan of the Original Dallas TV Show.  Yes, that one that ran from April 2, 1978 – May 3, 1991 for fourteen seasons!  See photo of that cast at the top right bottom photo.

And No... There wasn't a Dallas Comic Book... But there was a Dallas Newspaper Comic Strip, which ran from February 1st of 1981 to November 24th of 1984!

Anyways... Last night was the Season 2 Finale as I was saying...

TNT ran the last two episodes of the season back to back. (See top right photo for the 2013 cast.)  The second episode basically ended the season 3/4 of the way through the episode.  Which, in my mind, would have been a great place to end the season.

But no... The producers of the show had to run an extra 15 minutes!

Which kind of ruined the good feeling that the first 45 minutes of the episode ended with.

So yes, there should be a 3rd season.  Unless the poor ratings in some international countries affects that decision making.

I personally have watched this new series since it began airing in 2012.   I found it kind of hard going at first, with the newer cast being unfamilar with me.   It took a while for me to warm up to the new cast, but J.R., Bobby, and Sue Ellen were there to keep me watching.   At least until episode seven of this 2nd season, when J.R. died.

Here's my thoughts on some of the cast.  There are too many to comment on in total:

Josh Henderson as John Ross Ewing III - I can't make up my mind on this role.  John Ross grew on me as the episodes aired, but in the last 15 minutes of the season finale... Well, the role doesn't play well for me.

Jesse Metcalfe as Christopher Ewing - Same with this role.  I know that Christopher is the biological son of Sue Ellen's sister, Kristen Shepherd, but somehow, this player doesn't resound with me.  I like the actor, but the role doesn't seem to fit totally.

Jordana Brewster as Elena Ramos - I couldn't get into this role either this season...

Julie Gonzalo as Pamela Rebecca Barnes -  This role blossomed this year!  Good acting and the role was well written!

Brenda Strong as Ann Ewing -  I'm torn on this role.  At times she is well written, other times not as well.

Emma Bell as Emma Brown - You got to be kidding!  This character has totally gone off wrong this season!

Patrick Duffy as Bobby Ewing -  Well written character this season.  Especially with J.R. dying, someone had to step up to finish the season.  Good job!

Linda Gray as Sue Ellen Ewing -  I enjoyed seeing this character back, even stronger in Season 2.

Larry Hagman as J.R. Ewing -  Well played role by Larry Hagman.  A shame his early death caused the season to change in direction.  But his presence in the remainder of the season was definitely felt!

Well, that's pretty much it for me on this blog... I enjoyed watching the 2nd season of Dallas, and would be receptive to view a 3rd season.   One thing I noticed though... There seems to be a lot more action in this newer version of Dallas over the original version.  With less episodes in a season than in the original version, the new Dallas has to squeeze a lot more in!

If you weren't watching Dallas this year, and were a fan of the orignal series, I'd suggest you catch this serries online, or on DVD to get caught up!

~ Michael

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3827 -    At the recent WonderCon 2013, held in Anaheim, California... There was a panel titled 'The Business and Hobby of Collecting Comics', which I already blogged about, #3822.

At that panel, one of the panelists, John Ellis, waited for someone to mention the secret phrase.   When he spoke up about it, my wife, Tina LoSasso, said 'Steve Canyon'!   Then repeated it with vigor, 'Steve Canyon'!

John gave her the copy of the DVD shown at the top right of this blog, 'The Complete Steve Canyon On TV Volume 1'.

Afterwards, John, myself, Greg Koudoulian, another, and Tina went out to a quick bite of dinner at the Marriott bar.   There I found that John was working on Volume 3 of the DVD set, which would be the last of the 34 episodes of the 1958-59 TV Series, which ran for one season only!

This is a labor of love for John, which you can read about at his blog, SteveCanyonOnDVD at Blogspot.

The character, Steve Canyon, has its own Wikipedia entry at this link, with a section on the TV Show.

I'm going to post a couple of mini-reviews from our watching the 1st DVD this weekend. (Well, actually disc 1 of the 2 disc set in Volume 1.

First, Tina, who won the DVD, had this to say about watching the DVD: "I thought that this show was written very well for a 1950s genre TV show.  The male characters were well written, while the female characters were very stereotypical for the late 1950s.  I would give this a 7.5 (Very Fine Minus) for the episodes that we watched.

As for myself, (Michael) , I wanted to say this:   I've read Steve Canyon in the newspapers while it ran.  Up until the 1970s.  Of course I knew who Milt Caniff was.  However I had not even seen this TV show mentioned, let alone watch an episode before viewing this DVD!  I took a look at the 1958-59 TV Season schedule and saw that it was up against The Lawrence Welk Show and the Gale Storm show.  Well, we watched the Lawrence Welk show for sure, as we only had one TV set in the family, LOL!

I thought that the half hour episodes we watched were pretty darn good.  I liked the pacing of the episodes, and also seeing TV stars in their early years, including Marion Ross (later of Happy Days!), Larry Pennell (later a lead actor in Ripcord), Russell Johnson (later the Professor in Gilligan's Island), and Philip Abbott (later of the F.B.I. TV show), just to mention a few.

The DVDs covers have a cartoon Steve Canyon shaking hands with Dean Fredericks who played the character role in the TV Show, as seen in the top left photo of this blog.  Dean's Wikipedia entry can be found here.

I found this DVD set to be a fun one to watch, and was amazed at the cigarette commercials that were included, as Chesterfield King sponsored the show!   Also found the ABC lead ins for their other ABC shows to be fun to view.  Please note that the Steve Canyon show aired on NBC, and re-runs were aired on ABC.

The package the DVD set came in was very well thought out.  With liner notes for each episode, and with a note on the added extras inserted in each episode

I would give this DVD set a Very Fine / Very Fine Plus (VF/VF+) 8.25 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

Here is my son Vinnie's review:

This previous Saturday night I watched the first 6 episodes of the one-season Steve Canyon tv show that originally aired back in 1958. It was a show about a man, Steve Canyon, in the United States Air Force, with episodes revolving around Steve flying jets in differing situations and circumstances. Due to the time it aired, all the episodes were filmed in black and white.

As a teenager who hasn't heard of Steve Canyon, I started viewing these episodes uninformed. I have previously heard the name "Milton Caniff" (who is the creator of the Steve Canyon comic strips which this show is based on,) but I never knew who he was or what he did. I had also never heard of the actors and actresses present on the show, however, my father was picking out a few of them and saying what they were otherwise known for or where they've appeared.

The show itself was quite an enjoyable experience. Each episode was 30 minutes of high-flying tales with their original advertisements, just how they aired.

I thought the acting was done quite well and the stories were mighty interesting. The actors portrayed the characters well, and they had developed a strong personality by the end of the episode, clearly displaying how their character acts, and how he or she interacts with each other. The stories were presented with a clear storyline. The topics were intriguing and relative to the characters and the show's intended "character".

All in all, the show was quite enjoyable, even for the difference in time from it's original airing and today. It's a shame the show only lasted for one season, a total of 34 episodes.

I would give the "Steve Canyon" dvd set a comic book grade of Very Fine Plus (VF+), an 8.5 out of 10.0 grade scale.

Thanks, Vinnie, for a comprehensive review!  It is surprising to me that he gave it such a high grade, for someone who had not read the Steve Canyon comic strip before. So it would appear that this show would be okay for all age groups to view today...

Here is the link to where you can purchase the first two DVDs of this three DVDs set.

My thanks to John for providing the DVD as a prize at the panel, and to Tina for winning it!

~ Michael
