Michael D Hamersky On Comics Is Sad To Hear...

Of The Passing of Murphy Anderson

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4053 -   Yesterday late afternoon I read of the passing of famous comic book artist Murphy Anderson...

He was well known to comic book fans, as he was in the comic book industry for many years...

I had met him at the San Diego Comic Con International before, but it was at the ignaural San Diego Comic Fest back on October 19th of 2012 that I got to know him and his wife Helen a little bit better.

I saw them at the Comic Fest location and they needed a little help in finding their bearings on the convention.  I took them to Cafe Frankenstein, where they were to meet David Siegel, who had arranged for them to attend the Comic Fest.

Well, after guiding them to the Cafe, I sat down with them and David, and we all had a great visit!

I saw them a few more times during the convention, and attended the special program that Gary Carter interviewed Murphy at.

All in all, it was a great time seeing Murphy and Helen on a more intimate visitation, than I had before at the larger convention.

So I was a little sad to hear of his passing yesterday and thought I would share these photos with you all today...

My condolences to Murphy's family & friends.

Stan Goldberg Passes...

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4014 -    I just read this morning that Stan Goldberg, who worked at Marvel, DC & Archie Comics, passed away last night.  He had a stroke about two weeks ago, and was 82 years old.

I remember meeting Stan at the 2003 San Diego Comic-Con International, when he was the subject of the Program titled: "Spotlight on Stan Goldberg".   He presented a lot of info on his early days, and what he had been doing up to his retirement.  I haven't uploaded the photos from the program to the special 2003 SDCC Photo Album as of yet, but when I do, that is where they will be.

I remember's Stan's works at Marvel in the early 1960s.  He would sign the comics as "Stan G.".  Yes, I did read several "Millie the Model" comics!  Stan left Marvel Comics in 1969, and went to DC Comics for about three years.  He then went to Archie Comics.

For a list of his works in comics, I would suggest this link to the Grand Comics Database.

For a history on Stan's life, I would suggest reading the entry in the Wikipedia series.

Stan also had a web site, as seen at StanGoldberg.com

My condolences to his family on his passing.

Stan gave a lot of energy to the comics industry, and he will definitely be remembered for his fine work.

~Michael

Allen Bellman
A Happy Birthday
On His 89th Birthday Celebration!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3875 -    I want to start the day off right... By Wishing Allen Bellman a Happy 89th Birthday!

Allen lives in Florida, but is having a year long conventions appearance schedule, as seen in my blog #3810.

I first met Allen back in 2007 at the San Diego Comic-Con International.  See photo at the middle right, where he is receiving the Inkpot
Award at that year's SDCC at a panel. Blog #3423.

One of Allen's biggest thrills recently was his walking down the red, white & blue carpet at the Captain America Film Premiere in 2011!  See blog #3475 for details & more photos.

I could go on and on, (see this link for blogs on or about Allen), but I'll stop and just say... "Happy Birthday, Allen!".    ~Michael

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3830 -   Fun Facts About Jim Lee from WonderCon 2013 - Guest blog by Tina LoSasso.

Some random facts we learned about Comic Book Artist Jim Lee from the man himself.

The always gracious Mr. Lee answered fan questions and drew (no Marvel requests please!) for 45 minutes despite being 15 minutes late for his Spotlight panel at WonderCon Anaheim 2013. Here are some tidbits we learned that made us smile:

As a kid, Jim loved Jonny Quest! So did we:)

Jim de-stresses from the challenges of the business-side of comics by spending time with his family - especially watching romantic comedies with his wife - her choice! He's seen them all -- "The Vow" and "The Notebook", but when he took his wife to see Iron Man, she feel asleep!

He did not like drawing Spider-Man because the webbing is hard to do and takes a while. If you get it wrong, you have to start all over!

If there were a movie of his life, he'd want Steven Yeun (Glenn, The Walking Dead) to portray him.

His first encouragement to draw was in school. A substitute teacher caught him sketching and grabbed the paper. About to ball it up and throw it away, she took a quick look ... and hung it on the classroom board.

He likes Best Buy.

--Tina LoSasso!

Note From Michael:  Jim's photos from this panel and another panel I caught him at, can be found at my special photo album titled:  WonderCon 2013 Saturday

When the videos from the two panels are uploaded, they will be found at my YouTube Channel, HamerskyOnComics.

Also, Jim Lee was the featured cover artist for the 2013 WonderCon Program Book, as seen to the left.  I'll be posting a few of these for sale at my online comic book shop soon, (at ComicBooksCircus.com)

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions The Passing Of...

 Carmine Infantino
April 4th of 2013

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3826 -    Earlier this morning I posted a blog about the passing of George Gladir, (see blog #3825).

A couple of hours ago I posted a note on my Facebook Fan Page about two more passings... That of Roger Ebert, and then Carmine Infantino.  And then I closed down my laptop and ran a couple of errands.

While I was driving I thought about Carmine, who was 87 years old at his passing.

I remembered first seeing him back in 2000 at the San Diego Comic-Con International, as shown at the top right, where he autographed a few publications he was involved in.

Carmine Infantino contributed in many ways during the years he worked in the comic book genre.

Carmine was born in 1925 and was an early freelancer in comics.

He worked for Timely Comics, Prize Comics (Joe Simon & Jack Kirby's publishing biz), drawing Charlie Chan.

He also worked for DC Comics, drawing westerns, mysteries and sci-fic stories.

It was in 1956 that he helped start the Silver Age of Comics. He drew the updated version of the Flash for Showcase #4 for DC Comics.

Later, in 1967 he became the art director for DC Comics.

In 1971 he became the Publisher of DC, and brought Jack Kirby over from Marvel to produce his Fourth World comics line there.

Carmine later stepped down from that position, and became a freelancer again, this time for Warren Publishing and Marvel Comics.

For Marvel he drew the popular Star Wars comics, Spider-Woman and Nova!

I hadn't seen Carmine at any conventions for a while...

Here is a link to his credits in the comics industry, at the Grand Comics Database.  With almost 4300 listings!

Here is a link to his Wikipedia entry.

My condolences to his family and friends.  Plus my Thanks to Carmine for all the stories he provided during my years of reading comics.

~ Michael
