Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions News From The June 22nd Planning Meeting of the Upcoming...

 2013 San Diego Comic Fest

That Was Held Saturday June 22nd at the Town and Country Resort in San Diego, California

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3892 -    This past weekend was a busy comic book filled two days for me!

First, on Saturday, I attended the June Planning Meeting of the San Diego Comic Fest.

Then on Sunday, I drove to Baldwin Park, and attended the 2013 San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Expo, which I blogged about yesterday in blog #3891.

Anyways, I drove down to the Town and Country Resort on Saturday for the 1PM meeting.  Which lasted till about 3:30 PM.

Here are some of the topics that were covered at the Planning Meeting and that I can share here...

First of all... There has been another guest added to the Guest List.   You may have heard of him... Russ Heath!   I'll be sure to post more info on that as soon as it is up on the San Diego Comic Fest web site.

There is another guest that was semi-announced, but I'll wait till that is confirmed at the web site...

The San Diego Comic Fest will have a table at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con International, that takes place July 18 thru 21st at the San Diego Convention Center.   The table will be at the Mezzanine floor, along with other group tables.  Volunteers are needed to help staff the long hours of the 4 day (+ Preview Night) event.

The Draco Tavern is taking shape, and sounds like it will be a fun addition at this year's San Diego Comic Fest.  Wendy All announced several items that will be part of the LeChanticleer room, which is on top of the Regency Tower at the Town and Country.

Posters were brought by Michael Lapins, and everyone at the meeting oohed & ahhed them as he showed them off.  See photo(s) at the right.

There was a question about APE being the same weekend as our convention.  However, that was incorrect.  APE is the following weekend in San Francisco, (October 12 & 13), so artists can attend both cons if they would like to set up at them.  Our San Diego Comic Fest is October 4th thru 6th.

There was a question about better signage for this year's event.   Peter Csanadi will be updating the map he designed for last year's event.  That 2012 map can be found at this link.  (Also pictured at the right.)  I will post the 2013 map after it is uploaded.

The 2013 event will basically be in the same area of the Town and Country Resort.  But there will be some differences.   Artist Alley may be moved... More on that in a later post.

That pretty much is all that I can publicly state at this time...

For the rest of the photos I shot at the Planning Meeting, see this link.

Be sure to 'Like' our San Diego Comic Fest Facebook Fan Page via this link.

Be sure to 'Follow' us at our Twitter account.

And also, keep an eye on our web site.

My Take On: The 2013 San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Expo

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On The...

2013 San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Expo

That Was Held Sunday June 23rd in Baldwin Park, California

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3891 -    This past weekend was a busy comic book filled two days for me!

First, on Saturday, I attended the latest planning meeting for the upcoming San Diego Comic Fest, (to be blogged tomorrow), and then on Sunday, I attended the 2013 San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Expo

There hadn't been a SGV Comic Book Expo since 2010, when it was held in the Cuban Hall in El Monte, (see my review blogs at #3239A & #3239B.

The 2010 show had been the 3rd SGV Expo, and the last two years the expo had not been held due to the death of a major Nuvein Foundation member.  (Nuvein Foundation is the backer for this comic book expo.)

Plus, the 4th SGV Comic Book Expo had moved once again.   This time to the City of Baldwin Park, at the Arts & Recreation Center.

I arrived early to this show, (after a hour & a half drive from Carlsbad), so immediately started taking photos.

Since the artists were starting to set up their tables, I went upstairs to check out the Art Gallery.  I had missed the Friday Night Opening Reception that was held from 5-8 PM.

Those photos, and all of the photos taken by my camera will be uploaded to the special 2013 SGV Comic Book Expo photo album at my Facebook Fan Page.

The videos I took will be uploaded at my YouTube Channel in the near future.

Anyways, I checked out the Art Gallery, and then came back down and started shooting photos of the attending comic book artists & writers. There were several of them, most of whom I already knew.  So it was a friendly atmosphere for me.

There were also panels held at this comic book expo.  I took in all three that were held in the Baldwin Park City Council Chambers, in the building next door to Arts & Recreation Center.

The three programs that were held upstairs were the ones I missed.  Those three were mainly for the youngest generation with arts & crafts.

Between the two buildings, there were three small tents set up.  One for refreshments, (as the Food Truck was cancelled), the other a comic book shop selling back issue comics and toys, and the third was the tent for the Nuvein Foundation, which had the SGV Comic Book Expo program pamphlet.

I found this renewed Comic Book Expo to once again to be fun. The nicest thing for me was that there was air conditioning here, unlike at the Cuban Hall in El Monte in 2010. However, there no mojitos at this event, unlike the 2010 show!

I talked with Javier Hernandez, who was the chairman of this year's SGV Comic Book Expo, on whether or not the 2014 event would be held here.  He mentioned that it was not large enough to hold a large crowd of attendees.  I pointed out to him that there was room on the first floor for additional artists tables, and that he could actually add tables upstairs where the Art Gallery was held.  So there was enough room for at least the 2014 setup.

The main exhibit floor was filled with artists & writers, with their indie publications.  Enough tables to warrant the visit by those interested in comic books to the show. Plus the cost of admittance was FREE!

The panels I attended were fun and / or informative.  The choice of panelists were wide ranging in background.

There was only one comic book vendor at this event, so the choice of back issues was a little slim. Possibly more vendors could be added to the 2014 event?

All in all, I had a good time at this comic book expo.  And from the looks of the faces of the other attendees, they had fun also!

I look forward to attending the 2014 San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Expo.  And I thank those that organized the 2013 event!

Oh, and again, don't forget to check out the full set of photos that I shot at this event, at my special Facebook Fan Page photo album!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions That...

 Jane Russell,
Born on June 21st of 1921... Was Featured In Several...

Comic Books!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3890 -    Today is the anniversary of Jane Russell's birthdate!

I meant to post a blog about her today, but instead I posted on a KickStarter Campaign, earlier this morning.

So, I just finished posting a few of the comic book covers that she was featured on in a special album at my Facebook Fan Page! And thought I would briefly post a mention of that album in my Blog!

Jane's history is shown at her Wikipedia entry.

Her film & TV history is shown at her IDMb page.

I personally liked several of her films, but I believe my favorites of her films are:  'Paleface' from 1948, and 'Son of Paleface' from 1952!

The photo at the top left of this blog post is on the set of 'Son of Paleface', with Jane, Bob Hope, Roy Rogers & Trigger, back in 1953!

The scans of the comic books presented here are:

Love Letters #17 cover dated January of 1952, published by Quality Comics.

Famous Stars #4 cover dated May/June of 1952, published by Ziff-Davis.

Heart Throbs #9 cover dated March of 1952, published by Quality Comics.

I thought it would be nice to remember Jane Russell today, on her birthdate.  Jane passed away February 28th of 2011.

She will be remembered by film fans and comic book fans for a long time to come!

The Dig Comics! Kickstarter Campaign!

Which Ends Wednesday Jul 10, 3:00pm EDT

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3889 -    I wanted to bring this KickStarter Campaign to your attention today.

Miguel Cima, a Facebook Friend of mine, messaged me about it.

Miguel and others were involved with the short film  'DIG COMICS' that gained much international attention when it premiered a few years back.  It was honored as an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival, Vancouver International Film Festival, LA New Filmmakers Festival as well as 15 more festivals and then ultimately, won the Best Documentary prize at the San Diego Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival!

Now, this project is a KickStarter Campaign.  With a large goal to be met.  You see... After years of meetings trying to convince Hollywood networks, studios and production companies that comics deserve the spotlight, filmmaker / raconteur Miguel Cima is now turning to the people for help in financing this project.  Embracing the underdog appeal of comics, Cima calls on the converted comic fans and professionals to come together in making real a project that hopes to benefit the comics industry.

So when you are on the KickStarter Campaign link, be sure to watch the fundraiser short video, and then the short film that won the Prize at the SDCC, to see what this campaign is all about.  There is additional text there to show what will be done with the monies collected.

I want to present a few links here:

The Dig Comics Kickstarter Campaign link.

The Dig Comics! Facebook Fan Page.

The Dig Comics! web site.

I urge you to take a close look at these links, and join in with a pledge, even it is only a dollar!

This campaign appears to be a darn good cause to support.  Be sure to watch both videos to see what this campaign is all about!

~ Michael
