Michael D Hamersky On Comics Is Sad To Find Out Of The Passing Of...

Scott S. Norton

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4006 -    I thought I would mention the passing of my high school friend, Scott S. Norton in this blog today.

Actually Scott passed away January 2nd of this year.  A fact that I didn't know about until last week, when sitting in line at the 2014 Comic-Con International, I was flipping through the 2014 Souvenir Book.  Something I usually do when waiting in the long lines at the convention.

When I flipped to page 214, which was part of the 'In Memoriam' section, I was surprised to see: Scott Stuart Norton (1952-2014).   I did a double take.  The photo to the right of the article was indeed an earlier photo of Scott, my high school friend.

I was floored!   This shocked me, as he was the same age as I.  We had spent the Sophmore & Junior years of High School together at Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach.   Whereas I graduated in 1970 there, Scott & his mother had moved to Chula Vista, and he graduated from Bonita High School, also in 1970.

While at Mar Vista, he and I had participated in the Chess Club, and during our matches we had talked about our love of comic books.  Plus we both had been reading some sci-fi books, which we shared with each other. It was a shame that he moved to Chula Vista... But in 1975 I invited him and one other High School friend, David Heilman, to my first wedding.

I had moved by then to the Los Angeles Metro Area, and basically lost touch with Scott over the years.

He connected with me via Facebook, sending a friend invite in April of 2010.  I gladly accepted, and we missed seeing each other at the CONjecture 2010 convention.   I then took pains to see him at the CONdor 2011 convention, a photo of us is shown at the top left of this blog post, (above).

Scott basically went more toward sci-fi over the years, although he did work on staff at the San Diego Comic Con in the 1980s.

Readers of this blog know that I haven't missed a year of the Comic-Con since 1991, but I have also attended a few other conventions, Xena, X-Files, Quantum Leap, CONjecture, CONdor, anime, etc., etc.  Scott was a co-founder of CONdor, but he was most pleased with his bringing of the 1990 Nasfic to San Diego as his biggest fannish accomplishment.

My thoughts during the past several days have been on Scott.  I'm sad to hear of his passing, but also glad that he was remembered in the Comic-Con International Souvenir Book with a fitting tribute to him.  That would have pleased him greatly...

~Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On...

Jack Kirby Collector #62

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3995 -    I found this magazine at the TwoMorrows table at the 2014 WonderCon  in Anaheim, California this past weekend. In the early years of this magazine I had a subscription, but when it started being printed in oversize format, I had to stop as the USPS usually bent my copies in transit.  So nowadays I wait till I see it at Comic-Con in San Diego or at WonderCon in Anaheim.

This issue's them was 'Kirby @ DC'.  Which is actually not my favorite period of Jack's works.  Yeah, I'm a Marvelmaniac of Jack's works, which is what I grew up on starting around 1960 with the monsters comics titles of what was to become Marvel Comics.

However... I do enjoy a good story or presentation of Jack's other works.  And this issue does deliver that! Starting from the front cover to the back cover, this issue had a LOT of Jack's works at DC from 1970 to 1975, which is the last period he worked for DC Comics.

The publisher's editorial, by John Morrow, stated that this was his favorite period of Jack's works.  And he shows why in the editiorial.

Then an article title 'Key 1970s DC Moments' was featured.  I didn't know all of this info, and it was nice to see it presented in chronological format.

'Return of the X-Files' is not on that TV show title 'The X-Files', but rather all of Jack's work at DC during 1970-75 which were labeled with an 'X' in front of the work number.  Very interesting reading, along with the tables of the works that were produced.   Very good article... matter of fact!

'Pleading the Fourth' was a presentation of Jack's works on 'the Fourth World', with nice artwork shown.

Kirby Obscura is a regular feature in this magazine, and once again it was on the money.

'Kirby & Kobra' was a nice feature, even though I have not read all of the run of 'King Kobra' from DC Comics.

'Fascism in the Fourth World' was presented well.  It made for good reading.

'Challenging the Unknown' where the Challengers of DC were compared to the Fantastic Four of Marvel was very good.  I've read most of those Challenger stories, whereas I've had a complete run of FF from #1 to 102 that Jack produced along with Stan Lee and others.  Mike Breen did a good article on this comparison.

The magazine had other articles as well, ending with the 2013 Kirby Tribute Panel held at the 2013 Comic-Con International in San Diego that I attended.

All in all... This issue of the Jack Kirby Collector was a piece of art, even though the topic is not at the top of omy own personal likes of Jack's works.  I would give this a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 on a comic book grading scale. Be sure to check out your LCBS (Local Comic Book Shop) or order online direct from TwoMorrows.com.

~Michael

Merry Christmas To All!

This Year of 2013!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3990 -    I'm sitting here this Christmas morning, writing this before leaving to go to my Folks for Christmas Day....

This year brought a lot of fine things my way... and a few not so fine.

I've relocated to the South Bay of San Diego, which is where I basically grew up in during the 1960s.

Tina's and my townhouse closed escrow this past week, and our divorce is pending.

I've met several new people in the community that I now live in, and been to a couple of Holidays parties.

I'm hoping that the year 2014 brings a new outlook to me...

And I'm hoping that today, Christmas Day of 2013, brings to you and yours a Merry Day.  My best wishes to all of you this holy day...

Peace   ~Michael

(Note: The comic book at the top right of this blog is a one-shot from 1952, titled 'A Christmas Dream', published by Promotional Publications.)

That Fifty Years Ago Today...
President John F Kennedy Was Assassinated...

 width=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3986 -    I'm sitting here in my home office, invoicing sales, preparing to ship the packages later this morning.

While sitting here I'm watching TV and seeing mentions / segments on the 50th Anniversary of the Assassination of President John F Kennedy...

I remember hearing about this while I was in 3rd grade at Emory Elementary School in South San Diego (Imperial Beach).   There was a kind of shock in the class at the news.  My classmates and I were only about eleven years of age.

I remember also watching TV later that day, and during the days to follow.

Black & White televsion news... With the burial, and other news.

It doesn't seem that long ago to me now... But 50 years has been a long time!

At the above right of this blog is the 1st print of the 1964 memorial comic book printed by Dell Publishing on the President.

This is "The Day That Changed Everything"... As the Fox 'Happening Now' TV Show Host Jon Scott just mentioned...

~ Michael
