Michael D Hamersky On Comics Is Sad To Mention The Passing Of...

 George Gladir

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3825 -    I just saw the mention of George Gladir's passing this morning...

I had last seen George at the 2012 San Diego Comic Fest, and stopped to say hi to him at his table, (as pictured above).

Although he started off as a cartoonist... George was primarily known as an Archie Comics scripter, and he co-created Sabrina the Teenage Witch along with artist Dan DeCarlo.

He actually started as a comics writer back in 1959, writing one page stories for Archie Comics.

Sabrina first appeared in  Archie's Mad House #22 (Oct. 1962).

George also wrote for 'Cracked' magazine in the early 1960s, becoming its head writer.

During the 2007 Comic-Con Interantional in San Diego, George received the Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing.

I've seen George at a few conventions over the years.  He was always a quiet guy at his table or on a panel when I saw him.  A really nice guy.

Here is a link to his comic book credits, (almost 2,300 of them!).  Please note that many of his earliest stories are uncredited in the actual comic books.

George was in his eighties when he passed away.

My condolences to his family and friends.

~ Michael
