Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents 'My Take On':
Weird Tiki-Comics #1 / Tucker's Tikis #1
Published by Tucker Toons of Milwaukie, Oregon!
THE MOST COLLECTIBLE ITEMS at my own online comic book shop!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3586 -  I mentioned that I've gotten a little behind in review blogging publications that have either been given to me at comic cons this past year or those that have mailed in for that purpose.

So today I want to bring to your attention a publication that is a 'flip' publication, in that it is two publications as one, but 'flipped' that you can read either one first, back to back.  The front cover to the publication(s) is shown at the above right of this blog post.

I already review blogged the other publication that came in at the same time from Keith, in blog #3533 on his "Keith Tucker's Strange Alien Tales #1".

This publication addressed Keith's fascination with tikis, after living in Hawaii for many years!  And no, I didn't have to research that, as it was in the inside cover of 'Weird Tiki-Comics'!

Here's what else was on the inside front cover: "Weird Tiki Comics started out as a fun art cover idea, drawn in the EC tradion with a tiki culture, Mars Attacks twist. As I worked on the piece, a story began to manifest.  Incorporating my love of science fiction and tiki art, I was inspired to create a comic book series that I could have a lot fun doing.  My story begs the question, could ancient alien visitors to Earth be the basis for Polynesian tiki legends?".

So yes, what you see on the front cover is exactly what you get on the inside pages!  A fun read and one that cut off way too soon, to have to flip the comic around and start from the other side to read the next comic.  And yes, this first story is 'to be continued'!

The flip side was "Tucker's Tikis".  Which turned out to be a series of single page pin-ups!  While Keith has a good eye and artist's touch for drawing women in hula skirts... I would have liked to see the other sci-fi story arc finished in one issue.  So what this combined two story publication was, is a 'teaser' of sorts!

Here's what Keith writes on the inside front cover of "Tucker's Tikis", titleing the inside front cover 'Hula Girls And Tiki Gods':  "Twenty years of living and creating art in Hawaii has driven me to reflect on 'Polynesian Pop Culture'.  Also known as 'Tiki Culture', that first came to the USA in the 1930s, and it is a unique offshoot inspired in part by the 'Tiki' carvings of Polynesia and the South Sea Islands. The Tiki Road Apof Pularity in the late 1950s and early 1960s with TV shows like 'Hawaiian Eye' and the entrance of Hawaii as the 50th state.  Tiki bars and restaurants have sprung up all over America and the globe.  And now even 'Hawaii 5-0' has returned to the airwaves and is the most watched TV show in the USA.  Proving once again that the lure of the tropics is still with us."

Quite honestly, if I didn't have an interest in EC homage comic book covers, and had read this flip side first... I would have been more than happy with Keith's sketchbook publication which is what Tucker's Tikis really is, in published format.  His art style is one that I enjoy, and his illustrating women in South Pacific garb is fabulous!

I quite understand that when a comics creator self-publishes their work, that they have to do what they can to make it 'commercial' enough to sell.  So combining both of these features into one publication gets both the tikis / girls / sci-fi aspects all covered.

So I for one would look forward to a 2nd issue of both, either as a 'flip comic' or stand alone comics.

My comic book grade for this flip publication is a VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/N,) a 9.0 on a comic book grading scale of 10.0 being highest.

You can see more of Keith Tucker's works at:

KeithTuckerCartoonist.com/sketchbook - Where you can purchase the above reviewed comic or others that Keith has published.  His comics are only found here for sale, as your LCBS will not be able to get them from their distributor.

I don't see any Facebook Fan Pages for his works at this time.

My thanks to Keith for sending me a copy of the above publicaiton for review purposes!   That's now two of his works that I found interesting enough to review blog here!
