Michael D Hamersky On Comics Is Remembering That...
The Beatles
Invaded the USA on February 7th of 1964... AND American Comic Books Soon After!
---------------

Photos - (Top Photo:)  My Little Margie #54 with a cover date of November of 1964.  What makes this a hard comic book to find in any condition is besides having The Beatles on the front cover... This is the LAST issue in the series that had started cover dated in July of 1954!

(At the Top Right: First 4 photos) Laugh Comics #166 cover dated January of 1965 with Betty & Veronica day dreaming of... The Beatles?! And NOT Archie???
Strange Tales #130 cover dated from March of 1965 with The Thing and The Human Torch with... Beatle Wigs????  One of my favorite 'Beatle Covers' in Comic Books History!
Girls' Romances #109 cover dated June of 1965 from DC Comics.

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3587 -  Yes, I'm posting this a little early, as the 48th Anniversary of the Beatles arriving at the Kennedy Airport in New York isn't until February 7th of 2012!

However, I didn't want to miss remembering the arrival of the Beatles in 1964 to America (USA) as it totally affected American Comics starting in 1964!

For those of you that don't know the background... The Beatles left the United Kingdom on February 7th of 1964, where an estimated four thousand fans had gathered at Heathrow Airport to see them off. According to reports at the time, the Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" had sold 2.6 million copies (45s),  in the US over the previous two weeks before their fligtht, but the rock band group members were still nervous about how they would be received at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport.

The crowd at JFK was estimated at about three thousand people. The Beatles performed their first live US television performance two days later on The Ed Sullivan Show.  Which was watched by approximately 74 million viewers at the time.   That was over 40 percent of the American population in 1964!  So yes, there were a lot of newly minted Beatles fans!   And several millions of fans have been born since then.  Many of whom would love to have copies of The Beatles memorabilia if they knew they existed!

So for those of you that are Beatles fans or comic book fans that enjoy reading and possibly reselling the comic afterwards... You might want to take a look for these comic books, because the 50th Anniversary isn't that far away from now, and prices will tend to increase between now and then!

The comic books that are being presented here are just a few of the comic book that The Beatles were featured on the front cover!

Plus they appeared on several comic book titles from the different comic book publishers that were in existence during that time period.  Including Archie Comics, Charlton Comics, DC Comics and Marvel Comics to name a few that are represented here!

The earliest one that I am showing here is the one from Charlton Comics, cover dated November of 1964.  While not the first to feature The Beatles on the front cover, it is one of the harder ones to find, as it was also the last comic book in the 'My Little Margie' comic book series.

I haven't seen a complete list to date with all of The Beatles comic book covers, or those that made references to them in the inside comic book pages, but I'm sure someone has a near complete list by now!

Should you know of one, feel free to post that link at my Facebook Fan Page, as seen in this link, Michael D Hamersky On Comics!

And yes, it does seem several years that this occured in my lifetime.  I was up in Alaska at the time, at the Naval Air Station on Kodiak Island.  News of all this 'Beatles' invading was a little slow in arriving to us, as we had one TV station on the island!  But when the 'English Invasion' came... Kodiak Island was engulfed in another 'Tidal Wave' similiar to the Good Friday Earthquake / Tidal Wave of 1964!

So, for those of you that are interested in Beatles memorabilia... Don't forget the comics!  And to help you find those that The Beatles are included in or on... Here's a link to a special photo album I've set up:  'Comic Books Meet The Beatles', where I'll be posting more comic book covers, as well as including those that I used this morning!
