Wonder-Con's 21st Anniversary in the Bay Area
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Comic Cons

The 2007 WonderCon Will Be Celebrating Its' 21st Anniversary This March  2nd - 4th....

Wonder-Con is the annual comic book/sci-fi convention that is held in the San Francisco Bay Area, with it beginning in 1987.

The convention was originally conceived by Comics Retailer John Barrett and it was  held in the Oakland Convention Center.  It  remained there until 2003, when it was moved to San Francisco's Moscone Center across the Bay.

While the main attraction of the Wonder-Con has always been a wide of assortment of comic book dealers and retailers selling back issues of comic books and action figures, the exhibitorship has grown to include other comic book and sci-fi related items.

There is also an "Artists Alley" aisle featuring comic book artists selling their original artwork, plus signing books brought to them for signature, and doing sketches for a commission. When I last attended they also had a 'Small Press' area, which featured several Bay Area Publishers.

Additionally there are usually several mainstream celebrities signing autographed pictures, usually with a sci-fi or comic book movie role that they played on the big screen.

In 2000, the convention's founders made the WonderCon part of the Comic-Con International organization  of conventions. This merger has given the WonderCon a wider audience and has made it a venue for previews of major motion pictures, especially movies ones based on comic books.

The movie previews have included Spider-Man 2 in 2004, Batman Begins and Fantastic Four, both in 2005 and Superman Returns in 2006. All of these programs featured stars of the films fielding questions from the audience.

For those interested in comic books, we have several thousands in our eBay Featured Store and even more in our eBay Pro Store. We will not be attending this yer's con.

NICK CARDY is a fan-favorite artist of the Golden and Silver Age. His career started with Will Eisner and Quality Comics. He also worked on the Tarzan comic strip before moving over to DC Comics in the late 1940s. His artwork included titles such as Mr. District Attorney, Daniel Boone and House of Mystery. During the 1960's super hero boom, Nick pencilled art on Teen Titans, Aquaman and even a Western hero, Bat Lash.  In the 1970s, Nick illustrated hundreds of comic book covers for the company.

AL FELDSTEIN was one of the guiding forces behind EC Comics in the 1950's. Al  served as editor, writer, and artist and helped bring to life one of the most  highly regarded comics groups of all time.  When the line was shut down in the mid-1950s, Al went on to replace Harvey Kurtzman as the editor of Mad magazine, a position he held for almost 30 years. Upon retiring, Al returned to his first love, painting, and is today a renowned painter working from his ranch in Wyoming.

The M.M.M.S. Wanted You....
Mood:  mischievious
Topic: Comic Book History

The M.M.M.S. Wanted You....Back in Late 1964.... Where Were YOU ?!!!

Sorry.... it's a little bit too late now to join.... But what the heck was the M.M.M.S ???

Well you see, at first the acronym M.M.M.S. was anyone's guess when Marvel Comics first began promoting it as Marvels' first fan club in the mid 1960's.

Stan Lee, now known as the co-creator of most of Marvel's early run of superheroes, began the M.M.M.S. in late 1964 as a way to further differentiate Marvel Comics from its' "Distinguished Competition", the DC Comics that had re-started the super-heroes resurgence in 1956 with Showcase #4 featuring the (later to be called 'Silver Age') Flash !!!

Whereas DC Comics were then considered to be the staid "IBM" of comic book companies, with its long history of tradition and business-like manner, Marvel instead was becoming the "Apple" of many a comic book reader!

Why? Because Stan Lee, sporting a casual atmosphere and less-than-formal dress atire, wanted to convey to his comic book audience that Marvel wasn't some unfeeling mechanism of Big Business, but rather a member of a team in which you, the reader, could become part of.

This I definitely felt because Stan's letter pages in the comics addressed the writers of the letters sent in by nicknames, instead of their formal name, (i.e. 'Dick' instead of Richard), and he encouraged writers to send their letters in to Stan & Jack, or Stan & Steve, instead of 'Dear Editor'.

For collectors their 'Golden Age' of collecting is usually at 12 - 13 years of age.  In 1964 I was that age. For months while I waited patiently in Kodiak, Alaska to see what the commotion was all about, Stan and his Marvel Bullpen, (the writers, artists, inkers, letterers), promoted the M.M.M.S. through its lineup of comic book titles without revealing what the letters stood for. They unabashedly slapped the sticker, (top left pic) on comic covers and interior pages from Westerns (see third pic at left), to Superhero comics (bottom pic), to even Romance comics!

Finally, at last, the "Merry Marvel Marching Society" was made public and its membership rolls quickly rose higher... Because for only a One Dollar ($1.00) contribution, each new member would receive an official membership kit that included these anxiously awaited for gems:

A letter on real offical looking stationary welcoming you to the society, A giant-size membership button proudly stating "I Belong: The Merry Marvel Marching Society," A membership card proclaiming that you were a charter member in good standing and (on the rear of the card) a pledge of allegiance to Mighty Marvel,  And a collection of cool stickers to plaster the world with !  Plus as a final touch of class, you also received a 33 1/3 rpm record with the voices of the Marvel Bullpen gang that were rounded up when pressing the record welcoming you to the M.M.M.S.!  How cool!

I have mislaid or ruined most of my M.M.M.S kit over the years, including scratching the warped vinyl record on my record player, however, for those interested in mid 1960's Marvel comic books, we continue to stock those outtasight comics with the M.M.M.S. sticker on the covers in our eBay Featured Store and eBay Pro Store

Make Mine Marvel !!!     M.M.M.S. Member .....  Michael

25th Anniversary of the ROCKETEER....
Mood:  cool
Topic: Comic Book Movies

25th Anniversary of the ROCKETEER ....

... in comic books, not the film!

The Rocketeer was created by writer/penciller Dave Stevens. He first appeared as a back-up feature in Pacific Comics' Starslayer #2 (1982).

The Rocketeer is a homage to the pulp heroes of the 1930s and 1940s, when pulps not comics ruled the fiction universe.

Briefly, the Rocketeer was a stunt pilot who discovered a mysterious jet pack that allowed him to fly. His adventures were set in 1938 Los Angeles and Dave Stevens gave the adventures a retro, nostalgic feel, influenced by, among other things, the old Commando Cody movie serials and pinup diva Bettie Page.

Rocketeer stories appeared as backup features from 1982 to 1995, and were published in Pacific, Eclipse Comics, Comico Comics and Dark Horse Comics. The stories gained a cult following and critical acclaim despite what turned out to be long stretches between story installments.

Walt Disney Pictures released a film version starring Billy Campbell in the title role in 1991. He was very good in the role, and I discovered Jennifer Connelly for the first time in her role of the Rocketeer's girlfriend Jenny, who was modeled after Bettie Page in the comic books. (Jennifer later went on to act in the 'Hulk' movie.)

The movie did not gross a big box office as Disney had expected , coming in only at 47 million domestic, so no sequel was ever filmed.

This is one of my favorite 'comic book' movies, I love seeing the pre-WWII involvement of the USA on film !

For those interested in the Rocketeer comic books, we have a few in our eBay Featured Store and even more in our eBay Pro Store.

Others may remember one of Dave's earliest published comics stories that was printed in DC's Weird War Tales where he inked Ken Landgraf's pencils on a story featuring gorillas that were pressed into service by the Germans in WW II... now that was a strange story... you gotta check that one out!

Dave spent several years at Marvel Comics during the 1980's. He is credited on several issues of Ghost Rider, Howard the Duck Magazine, What If...?, Savage Sword of Conan, and more!

Dave is also credited with works published by DC Comics such as Forgotten Realms.

Since his early works in comics he's been mostly in the animation field.  Besides working on Army Of Darkness mentioned above, he's also recently created some Fantastic Four cards for Rittenhouse Archives, among other things....

C.S.I.
Mood:  quizzical
Topic: TV Shows

C.S.I. .... Not Seeing Too Much Being Blogged or Posted This Season About the Shows...

... wonder if it is starting to be oversaturated on TV ??!!  I know that we are busy watching other shows this season...

When the comic books first came out for the different CSI shows, we sold quite a few, not as many as for the '24' TV show comic book, but not bad for a modern day comic book based on a TV show!

The first part of this season saw us post blog comments on '24', 'Heroes', 'Lost', 'American Idol' and a couple of others.

The major comment posts from blog readers were for our American Idol blog posts.

Appears everyone has an opinion of this season's try-outs shows !!

Anyway, for those interested in TV and Movie comic books of this season or seasons past, we have several for sale in our eBay Featured Store and eBay Pro Store. Just look under the TV and Movie Comics store aisle!
