Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions The Passing Of...
Davy Jones
30 December 1945 – 29 February 2012
THE MOST COLLECTIBLE ITEMS at my own online comic book shop!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3613 -  Last night it was announced that Davy Jones, (66), one of The Monkees had passed...

Davy Jones' life is shown in this Wikipedia entry.

I remember Davy mostly as one of the four Monkees on TV.

The Monkees also had a 17 issue run from Dell Comics, starting in March of 1967, and ending in October of 1969.

Two of those issues are shown above.

My condolences to his family and friends on his passing.

Vinnie's Take On:
Skink & Skunk
by Nathan!
THE MOST COLLECTIBLE ITEMS at my own online comic book shop!

THE MOST COLLECTIBLE ITEMS at my own online comic book shop!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3612 -  The short comic book, "Skink & Skunk" is a cute tale of a skink (geniously named "Skink") and a skunk (much like the other, named "Skunk") who are aboard Noah's arc during the food. It has multiple short stories all with the same general theme of living on the arc. It is quite funny to see what situations they get themselves into.

Although the stories are quite short, they made me laugh, which is what this comic book is all about. I think any age would  find these stories funny, so it would be a book on my list to read on a glum day. Of all the stories, my favorite would be the one where Skink and Skunk are on kitchen duty. Skink says he is a culinary genious, and tell Skink to just relax. A lion walks up and says "Uhm... do you have a rack of lamb?" Skink replies with "Only what you see, buddy. No meat, only veggies." In a decisefull pose, the lion says "Okay. I'll have the mock antelope in the squirrel flavored sauce." In the next panel, we see the two squirrels aboard the ship in a boiling cauldron. One says "This is not what I had in mind when we signed up for kitchen duty." This scene just got me. The comedic gold in this comic was endless! I won't spoil the rest of the stories, and let you pick up this comic for yourself.

The artwork in this comic was great! The cartoony feel that it had is perfect for a comic in which animals are able to speak. Everything was very "cutesy", which further supports my statement that anyone of any age can find enjoyment from this comic book. Each page has 8 panels, all of equal size. I like the effect of "popping out" used in the word balloons, noises (Slam!), and some objects like a held sign or wooden sword. It added a bit of texture to the page, which is wonderful. Now, my only disappointment was the fact it wasn't in color. I will admit, I am a "snob" when it comes to color, but it would've just made this comic all the much better. Despite that, the art was very beautiful, and I enjoyed it dearly.

All in all, it was a pretty darn good comic book. Like I said, my only downfall was the lack of color. As everything else was magnificient, I'm giving this comic book "Skink & Skunk" a comic book grade of Near Mint Minus (NM-), a 9.2 out of 10.0 grade scale. You can pick up a copy of this wonderful book, as well as other comics by the author at www.morefunner.com.

Andy Devine In Comic Books - Part 1

Andy Devine
In Comic Books - Part 1!
THE MOST COLLECTIBLE ITEMS at my own online comic book shop!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3610 -  It has been a while since I first started resarching for this blog post in Kingman, Arizona...!

Andrew Vabre "Andy" Devine, (October 7, 1905 – February 18, 1977), was an American character actor and comic cowboy sidekick, best known for his distinctive raspy voice.

Andy was born in Flagstaff, Arizona on October 7, 1905, and he grew up in nearby Kingman, where his family moved when he was a year old.

He had acting ambitions, so after college, he went to Hollywood, where he marked time working as a lifeguard at Venice Beach, within easy distance of the studios.

Andy's IMDb can be found here.

As for the comic books with Andy Devine in them... "With two sidekicks going, Fawcett Comics tried for three with ANDY DEVINE WESTERN #1 in December ‘50. Deemed by Fawcett “The Master of Mirth and Girth” and “The Jest of the West”, Andy failed faster than Smiley with #2 (2/51) being the last issue".  Both issues are pictured at the top of this blog post.

Both of these comics were drawn in a very cartoonish style by Dick Briefer (1915-1983), best known for his work on FRANKENSTEIN at Feature Comics.  In the comic, Andy is a carefree, wandering cook with his horse, Hoss.  Both issues have photo front and back covers.

ANDY DEVINE WESTERN #1 in Fine grade records at $177, with #2 in Fine at $129.

Right after this series of two westerns comics came the following... The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok is an American Western television series which ran for eight seasons from 1951 through 1958. The Screen Gems series began in syndication, but ran on CBS from 1955 through 1958, and, at the same time, on ABC from 1957 through 1958.  This series has a total of 113 episodes in Black and White, and Color.

The Wild Bill Hickok cast starred Guy Madison as U.S. Marshal James Butler 'Wild Bill' Hickok, with Andy Devine as Jingles.  The horses were named: Buckshot - Wild Bill's horse and Joker was Jingles' horse.

You may know Andy Devine in Wild Bill Hickok with this tidbit - "Wait for me, Wild Bill!".

Guy Madison died in 1996 of emphysema. Devine died in 1977 of leukemia.

There were eight 'Wild Bill Hickok and Jingles' comic books from Charlton Comics! Those can be seen here at this link. The series ran from #68 (August of 1958) to #75 (December of 1959).  Which was actually later than the TV series ran?!

A sidenote:  Actually Wild Bill Hickok and Jingles had started in Charlton Comics' 'Cowboy Western' comic book series back in #59 in April of 1956.  'Cowboy Western' had been running a 'Wild Bill Hickok' serial, so the insertion of this TV show flowed into the 'Cowboy Western' comic book title.  There were only 19 issues of 'Cowboy Western', before it changed to 'Wild Bill Hickok and Jingles'!

Just before the Wild Bill Hickok TV show went off the air, "Andy went off on his own to 'Andy's Gang'.  This was a "children's television program that ran on NBC from August 20, 1955, to December 31, 1960. It was hosted by actor Andy Devine and was the successor to the radio and television programs. Smilin' Ed McConnell and his Buster Brown Gang, later shortened to Smilin' Ed McConnell and his Gang.

Devine took over the television program when Ed McConnell died suddenly from a heart attack in 1954. He inherited a number of the characters on the earlier show and the sponsor, Buster Brown shoes".

Here's the interesting part to this!

Buster Brown Comic Book had three issues with Andy Devine on them, starting with issue #39, as seen to the left!

Issue #40 & 42 also had Andy Devine on the front cover!

Issue #41 also had Andy in the interior pages.

Issues #43, the last of the series, had Andy Divine and the Buster Brown Gang on TV mentioned on the front cover!

So, this is just a little bit of Andy Devine in Comics!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:
Mythology!
The DC Comics Art Of Alex Ross
By Chip Kidd & Geoff Spear
THE MOST COLLECTIBLE ITEMS at my own online comic book shop!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3609 -  I came across this book that was first published in November of 2005.  It's called 'Mythology' The DC Comics Art Of Alex Ross - by Chip Kidd & Geoff Spear.

So, what is the book about?  Here's the promotional blurb about it:

"Mythology brings together the best loved comic characters in the world, brought to life by Alex Ross, one of the most astonishing young artists working in the medium today. The award-winning designer/writer Chip Kidd and photographer Geoff Spear have teamed up to create a book like no other, with an introduction by M. Night Shyamalan, the acclaimed director of The Village and The Sixth Sense."

I found this book to be one of those 'coffee table books' that you would see laying around.

The layout of the book is kind of strange to me.  The artwork is fine, but the organization of it is a little off, in my opinion.

I would give it a Very Fine / Very Fine Plus (VF/VF+) 8.25 out of a 10.0 comic book grading scale.

Here is the ordering info for this book:

Paperback: 320 pages
Publisher: Pantheon (November 8, 2005)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0375714626
ISBN-13: 978-0375714627
Product Dimensions: 9 x 0.7 x 12 inches

You can order it here:  Mythology: The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross
