TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3672 - This is an update via the Sunday, June 24th staff meeting that was held at the Town and Country Hotel, where the upcoming San Diego Comic Fest will be held at in during October 19th through the 21st of 2012!

There were 22 staff members that attended this meeting.

Here is just some of the topics that were discussed during the staff meeting:

Wendy All shared several items from the Cafe Frankenstein presentation that will be at the SD Comic Fest.

Mike Towry shared the fact that he was on Fox 5 TV station in San Diego.  The station had a special segment on the upcoming San Diego Comic Fest!  Check the web site for the video.  (At:  the Facebook Fan Page for the San Diego Comic Fest.)

Daniel shared the fact that the Twitter account for the San Diego Comic Fest was up.  Feel free to 'follow' this!

Mike Towry brought up the fact that the Richard Alf Tribute Panel will be held at the upcoming Comic Con International:  San Diego on Friday, July 13th, at 4PM at Room 9!

Mark brought up the status of publicity for the SD Comic Fest.

Mark also brought up the fact that the SD Comic Fest will be having a table on the Mezzanine level of the San Diego Convention Center during the Comic-Con International: San Diego event.  Plus he asked for volunteers to man the table during the SDCC.

Also brought up was the fact that there will be a price increase after the middle of July.  Not for sure when, so buy your membership today!  At: Registration.

There will also be a 'film program'.  More on that later, but here's a thought:  A 'Ghost of Honor' - Forrey Ackerman, with possibly a reel of Forrey's cameos, of which there are over 200 of them!

There may also be a 'Kickstarter' program, but more on that later!

Vendors - The possible layout could be 70 each of 6' tables.  More on that later.

That's about it for this latest meeting, except that we took in a view of the rooms, which I'll be sharing at my Facebook Page, and possibly at the Facebook Page for the San Diego Comic Fest.

Feel free to check out the links above, and join us in October!

My Take On: The Artic Marauder by Jacques Tardi

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

The Arctic Marauder

By Jacques Tardi!
 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3671 - This graphic novel is about the following:

"In its ongoing quest to showcase the wide range of Jacques Tardi’s bibliography, Fantagraphics reaches all the way back to one of his earliest, and most distinctive graphic novels: A satirical, Jules Vernes-esque “retro-sci-fi” yarn executed on scratchboard in a stunningly detailed faux-woodcut style perfectly chosen to render the Edwardian-era mechanical marvels on display. Created in 1972, The Arctic Marauder is a downright prescient example of proto-“steampunk” science fiction — or perhaps more accurately, and to coin a spinoff genre, “icepunk.”

In 1899, “L’Anjou,” a ship navigating the Arctic Ocean from Murmansk, Russia, to Le Havre, France comes across a stunning sight: A ghostly, abandoned vessel perched high atop an iceberg. But exploring this strange apparition is the last thing the sailors will ever do, as their own ship is soon dispatched to Davy Jones’ locker via a mysterious explosion.

Enter Jérôme Plumier, whose search for his missing uncle, the inventor Louis-Ferdinand Chapoutier, brings him into contact with the sinister, frigid forces behind this — and soon he too is headed towards the North Pole, where he will content with mad scientists, monsters of the deep, and futuristic submarines and flying machines. Told with brio in hilarious slabs of vintage purple prose, The Arctic Marauder works both as ripping good adventure story and parody of same, and, predating as it does the later and not dissimilar Adèle Blanc-Sec series, is a keystone in Tardi’s oeuvre in his fantastical mode. 64 pages of black-and-white comics."

As you can see from the above, this is a reprint from the 1974 publication originally published in French.

The cover was what stood out to me, and prompted me to pick it up.

The interior pages artwork grabbed my attention as well, and I knew that I wanted to read this, and possibly review blog it also.

The translation from French to English was done by Kim Thompson.  Not having seen it in French, nor understanding the language to read, I've got to say that Kim did a good job in presenting the work here in this book.

The chapters were laid out properly, and grew my interest as each chapter ended.

My only con to this graphic novel would be the last page, after the 'Fin'.  I'm not for sure if this is to be a continued story or what...?

Still, until that last page, I would have to say that the storyline, the artwork, and the full presentation, even though it is in black and white, gave me many minutes of pleasant diversion.  A very good job indeed!

My comic book grade for this is a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale!

Here is where you can purchase a copy of this graphic novel: The Arctic Marauder.

My Take On: Blindspot - The Graphic Novel by Kevin C Pyle

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Blindspot!

The Graphic Novel by Kevin C. Pyle!
 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3670 - This graphic novel is about the following:

An evocative graphic novel about a boy growing out of childhood.

Dean and his friends have created an entire world in the woods behind their suburban housing development. In their army fantasy, they're at war, and Dean is the daring captain leading his troops through episodes of intrigue and danger.

But no fantasy can last forever. A run-in with a homeless man in the woods snaps the boys back to reality, and little by little the real world pervades their imagined universe and drives them apart.

Award-winning illustrator Kevin C. Pyle makes the popular graphic novel format accessible to middle-grade readers in this skillfully drawn and candidly written book. Blindspot tells the story of one boy's transition from childhood to adolescence in a way that will appeal to children and adults alike.

Okay, as we all know, the nature of war has been interpreted by every generation for a long, long time.

Plus, more often than not, people want to make sense of calamity.

So in Blindspot, there is a young boy in grade school who experiences war through fantasy.

Dean Tolleridge is the name of the young boy and is the plot’s central figure. He sets up the storyline by making a map of his life on pages 4 & 5 of the graphic novel.

Dean has just moved to a new town.  His main diversion is in play, of which playing 'ARMY' is a big part. So much so that he gets into trouble at school and on his 'battlefield'.

The storyline is written and illustrated by Kevin C Pyle, so he has full control of what he wants to present in this graphic novel.  The colors are limited in use on the interior pages. Which actually adds to the storyline!

I found this book to be interesting, and probably a good graphic novel for a younger person to read.  The storyline is fine for both teenagers and adult readership.

My comic book grade for this is a Very Fine Plus (VF+) 8.5 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale!

Here is where you can purchase a copy of this graphic novel: Blindspot.

Kevin also has a web site for Blindspot that you can find here!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents Some Thoughts On:

Santa's Village

The First Franchised Theme Parks In The World!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3669 - A while back I posted a link to the Santa's Village web site, (as seen here), at my Facebook Personal Page.

That's because it was December 26th of 2011, and I was busy celebrating the Holiday Season!

What got me to post the link to the web site, is that the last Santa's Village had closed back in 1998, and I wasn't aware that the web site was in existence!

Plus, it appears that the Santa's Villages (all 3 of them!) have been remembered by many others. So there is a web site, and a Facebook Fan Page as well now!

To the left is a photo of my little brother, Francis (aka Frank), and myself in 1959 at the Skyforest Santa's Village.

I remember the few times that my folks took us there, and I followed up with taking my children there in the 1980s and later, up till it closed in 1998.

This was actually a fun place to go to, but we usually only went during the Holidays Season.

Also, there is a Facebook Fan Page for Santa's Village that was located in Skyforest, California. Here is the link to that Fan Page!

Also, here is a link to the book "Santa's Village" that you can purchase. Please note that is on the history of the Dundee, Illinois location:  Santa's Village (Images of America: Illinois)!

In addition, although there aren't any Santa's Villages comic books... There are several Santa Claus stories in comics, as seen at this link!

And yes, I know that it isn't July (Christmas in July!), but I wanted to share the above with you via my Blog!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Spinner Racks!

Comic Books Spinner Racks, That Is!
 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3668 - First of all... I've been reading some other blogs concerning comics and other pop culture topics, and found that I have missed blogging about comic books spinner racks!

Well, I'm old enough to remember those for sure!

The top left photo is from a ways back, and reminds me of hitting the Seven-Elevens in my Imperial Beach, California area when I was a kid!

The photo to the top right of this blog post is a little later, but brings fond memories back to me.

This one, shown to the immediate left, is a little bit older than my earliest reading of comics, I believe.

What with the Comics Code Authority stamp at the top of the spinner rack.  I do remember seeing the stamp, but not on the comic book spinner racks that I frequented.

I also remember that the front placed comics in the rack holders would usually be a little bent, as those persons thumbing through the racks would necessarily bend the comics over at the top, to see what laid behind them.  The comics in the spiner rack weren't bagged & boarded like those in the photo!

Sometimes you would come across a month or two or three month old comic book, that had been missed being pulled for return credit.

There were a few stores in Imperial Beach, where I would ride my bike to, to pick up the latest issues.

Spinner racks were all that those stores had to place their comics into.

The stores were either 7-11s or liquor stores.

I remember what fun it was to ride my bike to go pick up the latest Marvel Comics that I collected!

Those sure were fun days while they lasted!

Well... Mostly fun that is.  There was a small problem in distribution to the stores, and sometimes I would have to go to three stores to find the comics to keep my collection complete!

Not like nowadays, where the LCBS (Local Comic Book Shop), will have your comics pulled if you ask them to do a 'pull' list for you.

Yeah, those were the 'Good Old Days', with spinner racks!
