 This Day In History...

January 13th
But In The Year 1962

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3774 -   I have stopped blogging on weekends for the most part, as of last year.

However, I ran across this info and found a comic book connection as well...

This date, January 13th of 1962, Ernie Kovacs was killed in an auto accident at the age of 42 after crashing his Chevrolet Corvair into a telephone pole in Los Angeles, California, while driving in a rainstorm.

Ernie's life can be read at his Wikipedia entry, here.

I was a little surprised at how many different things he did during his brief lifetime, including being an actor in several films, including 'North To Alaska', which he is credited being in the comic book version, as shown in the top right photo. (Dell Four Color Comics #1155 cover dated December 1960.)

Ernie also had a 'Ernie Kovacs Dept.' feature in Mad Magazine during the late 1950s.

Being a kid of nine years of age at Ernie's passing, I didn't get to see that much of him on TV or films, but I do remember seeing him, and enjoying his roles

 Today In History...

January 11th
But In The Year 1908!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3773 -   I thought I would present something different in today's blog....

I'm going to mention what this day meant in the year of 1908, and then tie it to comic books!

On this date, January 11th of 1908, President Teddy Roosevelt declared the Grand Canyon in Arizona to be a 'national monument'!

So, when looking for comic books that tied in to this event or the Grand Canyon itself, I found that there was a Grand Canyon Association that published four comics in a comic book series titled: Canyon Comics Presents.

In issue #1 the feature is:  Chasm - Guardian of Grand Canyon!

There were three other issues in this series, which were published in three different years, per the GCDB.

I find that the Grand Canyon Association has a web site also.

I only see about two other comic book series that had a Grand Canyon theme, but I'll mention those in another year...

It truly is amazing what the field of comic books has offered in the past

~ Michael

Grimm Fairy Tales Presents

 Sleepy Hollow

Issues #1 - 3
Of A 4 Issue Mini-Series
From Zenescope Entertainment

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3772 -   It is the ninth day of the new year... And I'm still reviewing publications that have come in from Zenescope Entertainment this past year!

I'm really into this new series titled 'Grimm Fairy Tales Presents... Sleepy Hollow', a four issue mini-series.

I'm only read three of the four issues... But if the quality of the fourth issue matches the quality of the first three issues, then this will be a good candidate for compilation into a trade paperback, (TPB).

What's this story arc about?

"In the small town of Tarry Town, New York the story of the headless horseman of Sleepy Hollow has become something of Myth and Legend.  A legend that is about to become all too real. When a prank goes deadly wrong those responsible will learn the truth behind the legend as the Headless Horseman returns to exact a horrifying revenge that none will ever forget. From the writer of Salem's Daughter: The haunting comes a tale of horror and terror that will leave you on the edge of your seats. Hold on to your hats...and your head. "

There are a lot of credits to be found for this mini-series:

Created and Story by: Joe Brusha, Ralph Tedesco, Raven Gregory.

Written by Dan Wickline.

Pencils by: AC Osorio

Colors by Chandran Ponnusamy.

Letters by Jim Campbell.

Edited by Matt Rogers.

And that's just for issue #1!

I found that this creation truly inter-mingled the Revolutionary War story of 'Sleepy Hollow' with today.

Very interesting on how the past coincides with the current time.

Yes, the slicing of heads is kind of horrific... But it does fit the theme of this four issue series, and isn't over the top in presenting it to the reader.

I'm actually looking forward to reading the fourth, and final, issue of this mini-series!

You might look for this series at your LCBS on Wednesday when you go there to pick up your weekly comic book picks...

I'm giving this TPB a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

You can find this at most comic book shops, or from the Zenescope Entertainment web site.

Plus, while you are at the web site, check out the other series that Zenescope has published this past year, and the years before.

My own earlier review blogs on several of those publications can be found at this link, as Zenescope Entertainment does have several good series for your reading pleasure.  As I'm sure you can see from the past week worth of blogs I have posted!

Grimm Fairy Tales Presents

 The Jungle Book

VolumeOne
A TPB
From Zenescope Entertainment

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3771 -   It's now Tuesday morning, and I have several errands to run this morning... Into the afternoon!

So I want to post this review blog on Zenescope Entertainment's TPB that compiles all five issues of 'The Jungle Book'.

I've already review blogged issues #1 -4 in an earlier post, (blog #3716),  back on Friday, September 14, 2012.  I really enjoyed reading the first four issues, and it was only recently that issue #5 and the TPB came in.

What's this story arc about?

"Grimm Fairy Tales presents The Jungle Book -  A pirate ship carrying four children crashes on the shore of a mysterious and merciless jungle. Each child is taken by a separate tribe of animals as a means to keep the peace between the species. It is a peace that will not last... Fifteen years later the children have now become young adults and each will have to face the destiny that awaits them in the unforgiving jungle. A place where only the strong will survive. Zenescope brings you their newest reinvention of a classic tale that is going to blow you away!"

The ordering info is as follows:

Paperback: 172 pages
Publisher: Zenescope; First Edition edition (October 16, 2012)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1937068420
ISBN-13: 978-1937068424

I found the conclusion of the five issue arc to be satisfying, and a good ending for this series.

The art was fine, the colors good, and all in all, this was a good series to read.

I liked the twists that the writer took with the story, and the storyline kept me guessing as to what would happen next.  This was definitely not a standard superhero comic book, but a good jungle genre story.

Grimm Fairy Tales

 Myths & Legends

Volume Four
A TPB
From Zenescope Entertainment

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3770 -   It's Monday, and I'm back to review blogging publications that have come in over the last year.  Would you believe this is the 4th publication from Zenescope Entertainment that I've review blogged this year already?!

The item being reviewed today is the TPB for 'Myths & Legends Volume Four', which has been compiled from the Myths & Legends #18-21 comic book series arc, plus Grimm Fairy Tales Issue #3, into this trade paperback, (TPB)

What's this story about?

"As a new hit TV sensation, the duo travels from place to place disproving supernatural legends of Myth and Lore. But when Hank and Gina investigate the urban legend of the infamous witches den where a witch of terrifying power dined on the flesh of those unfortunate enough to venture to her doorstep only to find herself murdered by the townspeople the duo are in for a terrifying surprise when they both learn that the so called legend...may very well be true. Collects Myths and Legends issues 18-21 and Grimm Fairy Tales issue 3."

The ordering info is as follows:

Paperback: 156 pages
Publisher: Zenescope (November 27, 2012)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1937068641
ISBN-13: 978-1937068646

I found the art in this story arc to be more than satisfactory, and the colors mesh well with the art and the tone of the series.

The writing does seem to be slightly 'off', when the story line is compiled into this TPB.  Waiting a month between comic book issues when reading in that format you probably wouldn't see that, but when compiled into a trade paperback format, it just didn't totally jell for me.  It might be because the Myths & Legends issues were printed in 2012 and the Grimm Fairy Tales issue 3 was published in 2006. So there was a bit of time between the writing of the issues(?).

Still... It is a good enough read, and the compilation is one that should be read and go on your bookshelf, if you are into this Grimm Fairy Tales series.

I'm giving this TPB a Very Fine / Very Fine Plus (VF/VF+) 8.25 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale. Which is still a pretty good grade...

You can find this at most comic book shops, or from the Zenescope Entertainment web site.

Plus, while you are at the web site, check out the other series that Zenescope has published this past year, and the years before.

My own earlier review blogs on several of those publications can be found at this link, as Zenescope Entertainment does have several good series for your reading pleasure!
