Michael D Hamersky On Comics Updates His...     2013 Convention Schedule!   With Comic Cons, Other Cons & Comic Book Film Screenings!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3824 -    I've had a few changes in my projected 2013 Convention Schedule since it was first published.  

So here's my updated tentative convention / films schedule:

March 29 - 30 - 31        WonderCon - Anaheim, California.  I was invited to be on a panel on Sunday. The Facebook Fan Page is at this link.  Here are the links to the review blogs I have posted:  WonderCon 2013 Part 1, WonderCon 2013 Part 2, and A Girl's Eyeview of WonderCon 2013. 

April 13th                            Tierrasanta Library Fantasy Art Show - Hosted by Barbara Marker, Artist. Library located in San Diego, California.

April 15th                                  Wonder Women! Documentary Broadcast on PBS. Check your local PBS station for time it is showing.  

May 3                                   Iron Man 3 Film -  Movie Theater.   Looking forward to this one!

May 4                                Free Comic Book Day - Nationwide - I'm not for sure which LCBS I will be attending this year... More on that in a future blog post! Here's the Facebook link. 

May 11                        Long Beach Comic Con Expo - Long Beach, California.  The one day convention, which is pretty darn good for a one day show!  I haven't missed one of these yet!  Here is the Facebook Fan Page link. 

June 14th                         Man of Steel - DC Comics film (Superman)

June 14 - 15 - 16              Amazing Las Vegas Con - Being held at the South Point Hotel & Casino.  This is just a maybe at this point in time for us.  As I really want to go to the next listed event the following weekend.

June 23rd                         SGV Comic Book Expo - In Baldwin Park, California.  Here's the link to the Facebook event page for this convention. Oh, and it is Free Admission! It runs from 11 AM to 6 PM.   

July 18 - 19 - 20 - 21      San Diego, California - I have't missed one of these since con moved to the the new San Diego Convention Center in 1991!   Plus, I started as a comic book dealer at the 1972 comic con at the El Cortez Hotel.   Here's the Facebook link. 

July 26                            The Wolverine - Marvel Comics film

August 24th                      Read Comics In Public Day - The San Diego date is sometimes different than the National Day of this event.  Waiting for event planner, Chriss Cornish, to publish the date. Currently she has August 24th as the temporary date.

October 4th                      Sin City: A Dame To Kill For film.  This runs up against the San Diego Comic Fest weekend, but it is a 'maybe' for me to view in the theater.

October 4 - 5 -  6              San Diego Comic Fest - San Diego, California - The 2nd Annual convention! I'm one of the organizers, so I won't be missing this one!   More at the Facebook link. 

October 20th                  So Cal Comic Con - to be held in Oceanside, California.  The Con's promoters have set up the date, as of this blog's re-posting on April 15th.  I've attended the first three of these cons.  Even sat up a table at the 2nd one!

November 1 - 2 - 3          ComiKaze Expo in Los Angeles.  This is a possiblity. I've attended the first two cons held at the LA Convention Center.

November 8                    Thor: the Dark World  (aka Thor 2)- film from Marvel Comics. 

November 23 - 24           Long Beach Comic & Horror Con - Long Beach, California.  Haven't missed this con since it started!   Here's the Facebook link.

November 29                  5th Annual Black Friday Online Event - That I have held the past four years online at my Facebook Fan Page... More details on this later, as we get closer to this event date.

Okay, that seems to be it for an updated 2013 schedule...

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents...     Girl's Eye View of WonderCon Anaheim 2013!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3823 -    Anaheim's Convention Center transformed itself into the Happiest Place on Earth for comic book fans and pop culture geeks this past weekend. For the second year in a row, WonderCon invaded Disney's backyard with 40-50,000 collectors, fans in comic book T-shirts, zombies, girls in Tardis dresses, cosplayers galore, more Anime characters than I'll ever know, and a parade of food trucks.

Folks were indeed happy. They strolled around in costume, bought comics and collectibles, took pictures of their friends and favorite cosplayers, met comic book artists and writers like Jim Steranko, Brent Anderson, and Jim Lee, asked exceedingly esoteric questions, caught movie and tv panels for entertainment like Pacific Rim, Evil Dead and Arrow and previewed new games like Capcom's Remember Me.

When they needed a break from all the fun (which was early for a lot of folks!), they hung out in the sun, listening to live music and enjoying the cosplay parade and food truck offerings.

Invariably talk turned to how different this Con is from San Diego Comic-Con (even though it's run by the same folks). For me, it seemed like half the people I talked with had never been to SDCC or hadn't gone in several years. Yet, they'd heard the horror stories about the crowds, and even "pens to the eye."

This optimistic little (by comparison) group resoundingly preferred WonderCon Anaheim to SDCC, whether they'd ever gone or not. Their hope was that WonderCon would continue to do well and stay in Anaheim. Of course, continuing to do well means more attendees.

Let's not delude ourselves, folks. As attendance rises, so will the long lines, camping, frustration and plain old pushing and shoving and mob group dynamic that categorizes today's San Diego Comic-Con. As more consumers attend, more Hollywood productions will want to get in front of them with campers-only preview panels and ginormous exhibit hall displays. The vicious cycle repeats and pretty soon, we're at Fire Marshall capacity.

Warnings aside, here's one girl's eye view of WonderCon 2013:

Exhibit hall: Unlike SDCC, organizers let attendees into the Hall early each day - sometimes by as much as 40 minutes catching many exhibiters off guard. Longest lines were for collectibles (no surprise), comic book artist signings, and Stan Lee who was signing on Saturday. Happy to see lots of comic book dealers (we bought a bunch) and plenty of room for artist alley and small press booths.

Programming: Fans had little trouble getting into panels. Lots of repeats from SDCC. A high percentage of programming for artists and writers looking to break in and break out, albeit the same number of these as at SDCC. Because there was so much less programming (than SDCC) the WonderCon industry panels seemed heavy on the schedule. Pop culture fans enjoyed a smattering of tv and movie panels with little trouble getting and no need to camp out in the sun. I enjoyed panels for Arrow, Falling Skies, The Nerdist, and CBS's new summer series Under the Dome (based on the Stephen King novel - look for my review in an upcoming blog).

Registration: Friday seemed rather crazy with fans snaking a path around the front and side of the Convention Center. But folks seemed ok with it. We were grateful to have professional passes waiting for us - a registration version of the HOV lanes we sped up to get there in the first place!

Parking: We didn't hear a lot of complaints. The weather was good unlike last year's deluge that turned the search for parking into a nightmare for all. Personally, we much prefer parking at SDCC which is pre-paid so you know you have a spot - and hopefully underneath the Convention Center so it's MUCH easier to haul out all that loot.

Hotels: we commute, but our informal survey of attendees gave the nod to Anaheim on hotel accomodations for ease of acquiring compared to the crap shoot known as SDCC hotel registration day, and on price.

What made this girl smile?

Arrow panel -- what eye candy, sans that Lex Luther lookalike exec producer!

Scott Shaw's Oddball Comics -- if you've never seen it, you must!

TV Guide's showrunner panel -- interesting for pop culture fans and a great send-off for TWD's Glen Mazzara. Props to LA bureau chief Michael Schneider for dedicating the closing question to Mazzara.

Watching Jim Lee draw and answer fans' crazy questions at the same time. Who says men can't multi-task?

The Nerdist -- I don't think Michael got any of it, but Hardwick cracked me up, fun to see him live.

Under the Dome -- looks kinda cool to me and I'm NOT a Stephen King fan, more later.

Falling Skies -- they left the major acting guns home, but the preview reel hooked us all over again.

Seeing The History Channel's Vikings for the first time -- man, those HC fans are rabid...probably doesn't hurt that the cast is so smoking!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On...     The 2013 WonderCon Part 2!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3822 -    It is Tuesday morning... The second day after the End of the 2013 WonderCon that was held at the Anaheim, California, Convention Center!

There will be three blogs on 'Our Take' on this convention... Yesterday was 'My Take' Part 1 at blog #3821, today is Part 2, and after that will be 'Tina's Take' on the Con.

Here's my thoughts  on the Con's panels that I or Tina and I attended:

Friday: (Note:  Photos from these panels can be found in the Friday Photo Album.  The videos will be uploaded in the days to follow at my YouTube Channel: HamerskyOnComics)

12:30 PM - The Latino Comics Roundtable -  The first panel I attended at 2013 WonderCon, and a good one to start off with!   I know all of the panelists from meeting them at earlier cons.  They included Javier Hernandez, Grasiela Rodriguez, Jose Cabrera, and Rafael Navarro.  The moderator was Ricardo Padilla.  Rating:  Near Mint Minus (9.2).

1:30 PM - Insights Into Indie Publishing - I knew most of the panelists here.  They were of the group 'The Antidote Trust'.  Some good insights were given out during this hour. Dale Wilson, Dani Dixon, and Robert Roach were among the panelists I knew.  Rating: Very Fine / Near Mint (9.0).

5:30 PM - Indie Comics Marketing and PR 101 -  A good hour presented by Chip Mosher, Jeremy Atkins, Dirk Wood, and Mel Caylo.  Rating:  Very Fine Plus (8.5).

6:30 PM - Star Trek: Enterprise Bridge Restoration - Tina and I saw the first part of this panel.  I enjoyed hearing the history and seeing the photos of the Bridge.  A decent panel with Huston Huddleston and Brian Uiga.  Rating Very Fine (8.0).

6:30 PM - Not Guilty by Reason of Zombification -  We came in late on this panel, as I wanted to see what this panel was about... And Tina loves 'The Walking Dead' on TV.  Pretty cute presentation with a very good slide show.  Rating: Very Fine / Near Mint (9.0).

10:30 AM - Living the Vikings - A panel on the History TV Network.  Tina and I don't watch this show... but it looked interesting, especially after receiving a flyer on this panel as we walked in to the convention center.  Be sure to check out the photos in my Saturday Photo Album if you are already a fan of the show! Rating: Very Fine / Near Mint (9.0).

11:30 AM - Spotlight on Jim Lee -  This panel was the one before the one we came to see, and wanted to be close up in the rows.  I do respect Jim Lee, which goes back to his early Image Comics days, when he personally came out to the line of those wanting autographs and quickly signing one comic book each for those waiting in line.   Jim arrived late for this panel, and answered questions as he illustrated.  Good 'panel'!  Rating: Near Mint Minus (9.2).

12:30 PM -  Falling Skies - The panel that Tina and I both wanted to see, which ran at the same time that 'Revolution Special Video Presentation panel ran at the Arena.  Tina and I have a better feeling for Falling Skies, and were rewarded by seeing and hearing a few of the minor stars of the show.  Rating:  Near Mint Minus (9.2).

2:00 PM - Spotlight on Steranko -  Yes... Jim Steranko!  I have only seem him briefly at San Diego Comic Con International a few times, where he is mobbed by fans.  I was sitting in the front row of this panel and kicked back.  Photos only, as no video taping was allowed.  Rating:  Very Fine Plus (8.5).

4:30 PM - TV Guide Magazine's Fan Favorites Showrunners - I sat through this one for Tina, as she enjoys these types of panels...  Some good parts, but I don't watch all the shows these Showrunners are involved in.  Rating:  Fine (6.0).

6:00 PM - The New Faces of Self-Publishing - Moderated by Kiel Phegley.  An okay panel, but I don't know if the audience got what they thought they were going to get at the panel.  Rating:  Fine Plus (6.5).

7:00 PM - Under The Dome - An upcoming TV Show with a Sneak Peak & Q&A.  I'm not a Stephen King fan, but this show looks like it could be very good!   It is a CBS Summer Series, so be on the lookout for it for 12 episodes this Summer!   Rating:  Very Fine / Near Mint (9.0).

11:30 AM - Warner Archives: The Saturday Morning Extravaganza -  Really good panel moderated by Jerry Beck!  The panelists brought film clips from old Saturday Morning Cartoon Shows!  I really enjoyed seeing them!  So did Tina!  Rating:  Near Mint (9.4).

12:00 PM - Nerdist Industries - We only came to this to be ready to jump into better seats at the next panel.  But... Tina knew this guy headlining the panel!  It was Chris Hardwick, host of AMC's Talking Dead show!  I even enjoyed listening to this guy, even though I don't watch Walking Dead or Talking Dead!  Rating: Very Fine Plus (8.5).

1:00 PM - Arrow Special Presentation and Q&A - (photo shown at top right of this blog post!).  This was the panel we both had to see on Sunday!   And we were rewarded with seeing the major stars of the show!  Check my photo album, (when it is uploaded), and my YouTube Channel.  Rating: Near Mint (9.4).

3:30 PM - The Business and Hobby of Collecting Comics - Yes... This is the Panel that I was on as a panelist!  Thanks to Greg Koudoulian for inviting me to be a panelist!  I've already uploaded three of the videos that Tina shot of this panel, with more to be uploaded at my YouTube Channel.  A pretty good turnout for the last panel of the day, and with that last day being on Easter Sunday!   Rating:  Near Mint Minus (9.2).

Well..... That's it on the panels that I attended.   Tina attended some other panels by herself, but I'll let her talk about those and what else she liked or didn't like in her own review blog of the WonderCon 2013.

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On...     The 2013 WonderCon Part 1!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3821 -    It is Monday morning... The day after the End of the 2013 WonderCon that was held at the Anaheim, California, Convention Center!

There will be three blogs on 'Our Take' on this convention... Today is 'My Take' Part 1, tomorrow is Part 2, and after that will be 'Tina's Take' on the Con.

Here's my thoughts  on the Con, and I may be a little long winded since I want to put it all into two blogs:

1)  Location:    The Con moved to Halls A & B this year, versus last year's Halls C & D.  I'm not counting the lower level's Hall E, where registration was held.   This move was for the better, as it had a straight path to the Arena building, where the largest panel room was at.  The Halls A & B were closer to the parking lot 1, and to the con hotel, where there were the Games room, Anime rooms, and the Hospitality Suite.   Much better location for 2013 over 2012!

2) Parking:  At first I thought... They had to be kidding!   We arrived 1 & 1/2 hours early on Friday, and the parking lot structure 1 was already sold out!  We were directed to go to Car Park 4, which was already sold out also!  We were stuck, and were forced to go to an area that wasn't a WonderCon parking area.  However, Saturday and Sunday were better, as we arrived a little more than two hours early.  Those two days we were able to park in Car Park 1.

3) Registration:  The first day was a madhouse!  The long, long line in the court was just was too long!  Since I was a panelist at the con, Tina and I went to find the line for the Professionals.  It took a couple of event persons to answer where that line was.   The lines for the Professionals was very long also!  However, there was no line for the panelists / guests, so we picked up our badges immediately.   Please note:  The 3-day badges and the Saturday badges were already 'Sold Out' online before Friday arrived.   I didn't check the lines on Saturday or Sunday, as Hall E was under Hall D, at the far end of the Anaheim Convention Center.

4)  Program Book & Schedule Pamphlet:  These two items were merged together, which meant using the hi-liter on the schedule grids.  Kind of strange, as it destroyed the 'Near Mint' status of the program book. The front cover with artwork by Jim Lee was pretty good though.  The program book was well laid out and presented everything I needed to know, with the exception of NO Parking Lots layout.  Good thing I had gone to the Anaheim Convention Center web site and downloaded their parking lots map!

5) Small Press Area:  Located at the far left of Hall B, it was easy to find, and kind of quick to walk through.  I did that on Friday, and didn't return to the area the other two days.  Picked up a couple of publications I hadn't seen before.

6) Autographs:  Walked through this area twice during the three days.  Both times the guests were not at their tables for the most part...

7)  Artists Alley:  Walked through this area once each day, briefly.  Amazing to me how many artists weren't there on time, after paying for the table... 

8)  Fan Groups:  Briefly walked through this, and saw the San Diego Comic Fest table!  With a nice hello from Ed Cormier who was manning the table!

9) Layout of the rest of the Exhibit Halls:   This area was pretty large, it took all three days to walk the entire hall, as Tina and I attended many panels upstairs and at the Arena.  I liked that the majority of comics dealers were in the Hall A area.

10) Panels:  I liked the way the panels were spread out over levels 2 & 3 of the convention center.  Plus the short walk to the Arena building was fine.    I found that the halls the panels were hosted in pretty much had the right amount of chairs for those wanting to attend that panel.  I think I'll end here at point #10 and come back in the next blog on my reviews of the panels that I or Tina & I attended together.

Oh... My rating for the 2013 WonderCon?   Well, I've got to admit that the smaller scaled down convention was a 'hit' in my book!   I'm going to give it a Near Mint Minus (NM-) 9.2 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.  But the Con people have got to figure out the parking status before 2014's event!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions...    This Day In History!   March 29th of 1865... The Battle of Appomattox during the American Civil War began...

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3820 -    Just before I shut down and leave for the 2013 WonderCon being held in Anaheim, California.... I want to mention what happened on 'This Day In History'!

March 29th of 1865 the Appomattox Campaign started...

So you ask, what does this have to do with comic books?

Well... In the Classics Illustrated #162A, dated June of 1961, I find that a couple of the stories in the issue are illustrated by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers!  (Jack is shown to the left in the top photo of this blog post, and to the right of Jack is Joe Sinnott.)

You might ask... What are Kirby & Ayers doing over at the publisher, Gilberton?  Didn't the Fantastic Four first publish in November of 1961?

I don't know, but along with Kirby & Ayers illustrating in this issue, are: Geoffrey Biggs (who did the front cover painting shown at the top right), Sam Glanzman, George Evans, Reed Crandall, Norman Nodell, and others.

Which would make this comic book one that I would like to see and read!  Maybe I'll find a copy at WonderCon during these next three days?!

Anyways, that's what happened on this date, March 29th... Back in 1865!
