Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On The...

The 5th Annual Long Beach Comic Con

That Took Place Saturday thru Sunday November 23rd - 24th

In Long Beach, California!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3987  -     This past weekend I attended both days of the 2013 Long Beach Comic Con at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California.

This was the fifth straight year for this comic book convention.  I've been fortunate to attend all five of them now, plus the one-day Long Beach Comic Expos that occur in the Spring of each year.

Although my recent move to Chula Vista now makes the trip to Long Beach a half hour longer, (two hours one-way), my feeling is that attending this comic & horror con is well worth the long drive!

Why?   Well it totally reminds me of how the San Diego Comic Con used to be... minus the films that were played there years ago.

The center of the exhibit floor this year had over 200 different artists in what was called 'Artists Alley'. Trust me... It was more like 'Artists City', it was so huge!  It took me almost all day to stop at each table and check out what each artist had for sale, or work that had done, while they were doing commission sketches.

Yes, I saw quite a few friends from previous cons there, as well as seeing quite a few 'new' ones... 'New' to me at least! Plus several shared with me a copy of their latest publications for possible review in this Blog of mine.  More of those in future blogs...

I arrived what I thought was early on Saturday, but the underground parking at the Long Beach Convention Center was already full!  But it was a short walk across the street for overflow parking.  So that was okay.   BTW, the second day, Sunday, I was able to park underground, which made it easier to take out comics I purchased on the exhibit floor.

The opening ceremony was taped by me, see the above YouTube Channel video of mine. (For other videos from this con & earlier cons... See my YouTube Channel).

There were plenty of panels / programs at this year's LBCHC.  However, with spending the first day at Artists Alley, and the last day at the dealers tables... I only saw a few of them this year.  More on a couple of those later in this Blog.  The few programs I attended were well attended though, plus there was an onsite live auction house going on, which I stopped in to take a look at.

The dealers booths were pretty good this year.  I went to them all, and bought at a select few.  That's because I buy to read and then resell on my own web site, ComicBooksCircus.com. I picked up a few hundred comics, inclduing several 3-D Comics, plus several Golden Age / Silver Age War Comics.  So check back at my web site in the weeks to follow to see them.

All in all, I had a good time attending this 5th Annual Long Beach Comic & Horror Con.  As I said at the beginning of this blog, this con reminds me of the early years of the San Diego Comic Con.  That is a good feeling to have, to be at a TRUE comic con nowadays instead of a pop culture convention, which several of the cons have transformed into.

Be sure to attend NEXT year's LBCHC... It will be running earlier, during September 27-29th of 2014.

Plus, don't forget the Long Beach Comic Expo which is also produced by these same show promoters.  That will actually be a two day affair... May 31st - June 1st of 2014.

To keep up with these two cons.... Be sure to 'Like' the Facebook Fan Page for the LBCC at this link.

My thanks to Martha Donato, Phil Lawrence, Mike Scigliano, and all of those who helped put on this successful Long Beach Comic & Horror Con for 2013!

Also, more photos taken at the LBCHC will be uploaded to my Facebook Fan Page, Michael D Hamersky On Comics.  Plus more videos to be used in separate blogs will be at my YouTube Channel!

~ Michael

That Fifty Years Ago Today...
President John F Kennedy Was Assassinated...

 width=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3986 -    I'm sitting here in my home office, invoicing sales, preparing to ship the packages later this morning.

While sitting here I'm watching TV and seeing mentions / segments on the 50th Anniversary of the Assassination of President John F Kennedy...

I remember hearing about this while I was in 3rd grade at Emory Elementary School in South San Diego (Imperial Beach).   There was a kind of shock in the class at the news.  My classmates and I were only about eleven years of age.

I remember also watching TV later that day, and during the days to follow.

Black & White televsion news... With the burial, and other news.

It doesn't seem that long ago to me now... But 50 years has been a long time!

At the above right of this blog is the 1st print of the 1964 memorial comic book printed by Dell Publishing on the President.

This is "The Day That Changed Everything"... As the Fox 'Happening Now' TV Show Host Jon Scott just mentioned...

The KickStarter Project for Non-Stop to Comic-Con!

 width=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3985 -    I received the following message a few days ago:

My name is Randy Van Dyke, and I'm the writer/director of a feature film called "Non-Stop to Comic-Con." I'm trying to raise awareness about this film and the Kickstarter campaign we are running to fund it. I believe a film like this is very important because it sends a positive message about geek culture, and is a fun story everyone can enjoy.

I told Randy that I would check the KickStarter project out, and I did.

It is actually interesting enough for me to blog about it, which is what I am doing today...

This is not the first film that Randy and David Edmundson have been involved in.

I invite you to check out this KickStarter link, and see for yourself what they are proposing to do.

If you wish, they would appreciate a donation, and they have pledges for backers of this project of theirs.

Check it out and see if you wish to participate!

~ Michael

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3984  -     This past month has been very stressful for me in my personal life, which I won't go into in this blog.

Suffice to say that my personal appearances schedule has been affected as well.  So I wasn't for sure if I was going to be able to attend the upcoming 2013 Long Beach Comic Con...

However, things have been fixed as to where I can attend at least Saturday at the 5th Annual Long Beach Comic Con!

I've been very happy each year I've attended the multi-day con as well as the one day Expo in the Spring.

This con reminds me how the San Diego Comic Don used to be like, before moving to the San Diego Convention Center.  Yes... It is that good!

The photo shown above is me with a few superheroes at the 2010 Long Beach Comic Con...

I'm looking forward to attending the LBCC this weekend, and will be reporting on it via my Facebook Fan Page, (Michael D Hamersky On Comics), and then with a review blog after the convention is over.

You too can still purchase memberships to attend this con, whether both days or just one day.

The web site page for purchase is at this link.

The Facebook Fan Page for the LBCC is at this link.

If you see me at the LBCC... Feel free to stop me and say hello!

~ Michael

Legends of the Goldens: Forbidden Playground

Promo Comic Book Published by Paul Tallerday

 width=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3983 -     Last night I had dinner with Barbara Marker and her husband Paul Tallerday.   Barbara has a web site / Facebook Fan Page at:  BarbaraMarkerArtist.com.

Barbara had called me that the new promotional comic book, Legends of the Goldens: Forbidden Playground, that her husband Paul had published, had arrived, and wondered if I would like a review copy?

Well, I did... And met them for dinner over in Pacific Beach where they live.  I also talked on the phone with the creator of the book series, S.B.K. Burns on the phone.

I read the promo comic book later last night...

Here's 'My Take' on the promo comic book.

First, the front cover:   Interesting concept on the front cover...

Inside front cover: The promo piece of what the concept is about... This is a promo comic on the new adult novel that is being published by Soul Mate Pulbishing in November of 2013. (Later this month.)

The series is a 'Sci-Fi Paranormal Romance'.   Okay...

The credits are as follows:

Artwork by Kamen Chalakov

Story by S.B.K. Burns

Colorist by Barbara Marker

Published by Paul Tallerday

The splash page starts right off with the storyline.

The continuing pages, (eight interior pages in total), carry on the storyline.

Inside back cover:  A 'house ad' for another of S.B.K. Burns' projects, this one titled: 'Entangled'.

Back Cover: A 'house ad' for S.B.K. Burn's other project titled 'Getting Them Up'.

Okay... That's it for this promo comic book.

What's my thoughts?

Well... I haven't read S.B.K. Burn's other projects as of yet.  Barbara did the front & back cover of Entangled, which I saw a preview of at the San Diego Comic Con 2013.

What I saw here in this promo comic book was a good concept, one that would be probably be fulfilled in the 95,000 word novel that is being published later this month.

There was quite a bit presented in this short 8 page promo story.  Enough that I believe that the target market for the book series would be teased enough by the promo comic book to search out the novel that is being printed.

For you to take a look at this promo comic book, I'm going to refer you to S.B.K.'s Amazon Author Page, where her other projects are shown for sale in either a Kindle format or hard copy publishing format.  Here is that link. My understanding is that S.B.K. will have a Kindle eBook up soon for the promo comic book, and then a link for her novel.

(UPDATE 11-22-13:  S.B.K. informed me that the comic book is now listed at her Amazon site for purchase!).

My thanks to Barbara Marker for bringing this latest coloring project of hers to my attention!

~ Michael
