Michael D Hamersky On Comics Remembers This Day In History...

 January 17th of 1961

President Eisenhower Bids Farewell

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3776 -   I've had a project to do the past two days, which kept me from blogging...

So today, I'm going to ease back into the swing of things by blogging a little on history and the comic book connection.

This date, January 17th, back in 1961 was the date that President Dwight D Eisenhower bid farewell to the American people via a nationally televised speech.  He had served two terms as President, and three days later, he and his wife, Mamie, left Washington DC for their farm in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Dwight passed on March 28th of 1969.  The comic book cover shown at the top right of this blog is from the Dell Comics commemorative comic book titled: Dwight D Eisenhower, cover dated December of 1969.

Dwight was also mentioned in over 100 comic book titles, as seen in this link.

Dwight had four comic book one-shots, as seen in this link.

His bio is shown in this Wikipedia entry.

This event, his bidding farewell, is today's entry in this series of blogs.

~ Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Reflects On The Closing of...

 Comics Buyer's Guide

With Issue #1699

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3775 -   I was going to post a review blog this morning... But decided to check my emails / Facebook questions first.

At Facebook I found that one of the last print publications on comics that I read had announced on January 9th that it was shutting down with the next issue.

That would be Comics Buyer's Guide, with issue #1699!

Heck, that publication started back on February of 1971! Whew!

I had several boxes of the magazine here at my home office, and only started disposing of them after running out of room for my collection / back issue inventory.

Matter of fact, it was a couple of years ago that I decided to no longer renew my annual subscription with them, due to the fact that the magazines were coming in damaged to my PO Box.  It got to be a hassle to call their 'call center' and request a replacement magazine, so I stopped renewing, and would pick up the occasional issue at my LCBS.

I've enjoyed many hours of reading the magazine, and found it to be very useful, helpful, and fun reading!

I've met a lot of people who have written ongoing columns in this magazine, and I'm sad to see it go...

Another victim of printed publications going by the wayside enroute to digital readership.

My thanks to all of those that handled the magazine during the decades, and to those that wrote for the magazine.  It was a fun ride during those decades.

I'm not for sure what the Facebook Fan Page for CBG will be doing, nor that of the online site for CBG. They are supposed to be kept up for archival resources. When I find out differently, I'll post about it at my Facebook Fan Page, Michael D Hamersky On Comics.

 This Day In History...

January 13th
But In The Year 1962

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3774 -   I have stopped blogging on weekends for the most part, as of last year.

However, I ran across this info and found a comic book connection as well...

This date, January 13th of 1962, Ernie Kovacs was killed in an auto accident at the age of 42 after crashing his Chevrolet Corvair into a telephone pole in Los Angeles, California, while driving in a rainstorm.

Ernie's life can be read at his Wikipedia entry, here.

I was a little surprised at how many different things he did during his brief lifetime, including being an actor in several films, including 'North To Alaska', which he is credited being in the comic book version, as shown in the top right photo. (Dell Four Color Comics #1155 cover dated December 1960.)

Ernie also had a 'Ernie Kovacs Dept.' feature in Mad Magazine during the late 1950s.

Being a kid of nine years of age at Ernie's passing, I didn't get to see that much of him on TV or films, but I do remember seeing him, and enjoying his roles

 Today In History...

January 11th
But In The Year 1908!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3773 -   I thought I would present something different in today's blog....

I'm going to mention what this day meant in the year of 1908, and then tie it to comic books!

On this date, January 11th of 1908, President Teddy Roosevelt declared the Grand Canyon in Arizona to be a 'national monument'!

So, when looking for comic books that tied in to this event or the Grand Canyon itself, I found that there was a Grand Canyon Association that published four comics in a comic book series titled: Canyon Comics Presents.

In issue #1 the feature is:  Chasm - Guardian of Grand Canyon!

There were three other issues in this series, which were published in three different years, per the GCDB.

I find that the Grand Canyon Association has a web site also.

I only see about two other comic book series that had a Grand Canyon theme, but I'll mention those in another year...

It truly is amazing what the field of comic books has offered in the past

~ Michael

Grimm Fairy Tales Presents

 Sleepy Hollow

Issues #1 - 3
Of A 4 Issue Mini-Series
From Zenescope Entertainment

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3772 -   It is the ninth day of the new year... And I'm still reviewing publications that have come in from Zenescope Entertainment this past year!

I'm really into this new series titled 'Grimm Fairy Tales Presents... Sleepy Hollow', a four issue mini-series.

I'm only read three of the four issues... But if the quality of the fourth issue matches the quality of the first three issues, then this will be a good candidate for compilation into a trade paperback, (TPB).

What's this story arc about?

"In the small town of Tarry Town, New York the story of the headless horseman of Sleepy Hollow has become something of Myth and Legend.  A legend that is about to become all too real. When a prank goes deadly wrong those responsible will learn the truth behind the legend as the Headless Horseman returns to exact a horrifying revenge that none will ever forget. From the writer of Salem's Daughter: The haunting comes a tale of horror and terror that will leave you on the edge of your seats. Hold on to your hats...and your head. "

There are a lot of credits to be found for this mini-series:

Created and Story by: Joe Brusha, Ralph Tedesco, Raven Gregory.

Written by Dan Wickline.

Pencils by: AC Osorio

Colors by Chandran Ponnusamy.

Letters by Jim Campbell.

Edited by Matt Rogers.

And that's just for issue #1!

I found that this creation truly inter-mingled the Revolutionary War story of 'Sleepy Hollow' with today.

Very interesting on how the past coincides with the current time.

Yes, the slicing of heads is kind of horrific... But it does fit the theme of this four issue series, and isn't over the top in presenting it to the reader.

I'm actually looking forward to reading the fourth, and final, issue of this mini-series!

You might look for this series at your LCBS on Wednesday when you go there to pick up your weekly comic book picks...

I'm giving this TPB a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

You can find this at most comic book shops, or from the Zenescope Entertainment web site.

Plus, while you are at the web site, check out the other series that Zenescope has published this past year, and the years before.

My own earlier review blogs on several of those publications can be found at this link, as Zenescope Entertainment does have several good series for your reading pleasure.  As I'm sure you can see from the past week worth of blogs I have posted!
