The 2013 San Gabriel Valley Comic Art Exhibit & Comic Book Expo!

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3871 -    Back in 2010 I review blogged the SGV Comic Book Expo in blog #3239a - Part 1, and blog #3239b  - Part 2.

Today I'm mentioning the upcoming SGV Comic Art Exhibit and SGV Comic Book Expo.

First of all, let me mention the Art Exhibit:

Exhibit Dates: June 10, 2013- August 10, 2013
Opening Reception: Friday, June 21, 2013 5pm-8pm
Artwork Dropoff: May 20th – May 31st 2013 (Monday-Thursday 1pm-7pm or by appt)

The reception is the Friday before the Comic Book Expo on June 23rd.

Here is a little bit of the SGV Comic Book Expo's history:

Since it’s inception, Nuvein has worked hard to connect all communities of the San Gabriel Valley to various art forms. With the surging popularity and rise of comic book cinema in the 200′s, and the great need for arts exposure in the SGV, the Nuvein Foundation decided to create an opportunity to SHOWCASE this popular and exciting art form.

Nuvein founder, and president emeritus, the late Enrique Diaz, knew all too well the magic that opportunity, the right people, and the eagerness and excitement of the youth could create around the SGV. This as well as discovering a wealth of local independent comic book creators, illustrators, animators, and promoting the formation of the SGV Cartoonistas by SGV natives Javier Hernandez, Jim Lujan, Grasiela Rodriguez, Raul Aguirre Jr., and others only led him to considering and creating the Nuvein Foundations’ “SGV Comic Book Festival”.

The initial 2008 edition took place at the Cuban Club in El Monte, a long time partner venue of Nuvein, on April 6, 2008. The SGV Comic Book Festival was a successful event where local youth, fans, and aspiring artists alike met with independent comic book creators, animators, illustrators, and the SGV Cartoonistas.
The event featured workshops and live art. Information on that event can be found here

The follow up edition of the SGV Comic Book Festival took place Saturday, October 10, 2009. The event moved location to the Monrovia Library, as part of the Monrovia Fine Arts Association “Celebrate the Arts” event. The event featured independent comic book creators, animators, illustrators, and the SGV Cartoonistas. The event also featured workshops and live art. Information on that event can be found here

The most recent edition of this event was in 2010, again at the Cuban Club in El Monte on September 19, 2010. The event featured independent comic book creators, animators, illustrators, and the SGV Cartoonistas. The event also featured workshops and live art. Information on that event can be found here

Now after a 3 year hold, the Nuvein Foundation plans to relaunch this event in Baldwin Park in the
Summer of 2013 as the SGV Comic Book Expo, an event that will feature a curated comic book art themed gallery, animation festival, as well as workshops and vending from indie comic book creators from around Southern California. The event will unfold June 2013 at the Baldwin Park ARC
.

Tina and I will be attending this 2013 SGV Comic Book Expo on Sunday.  We won't be attending the Art Exhibit Reception though...

Here is my special photo album on the 2010 SGV Comic Book Expo, which was held at the Cuban Club, so you can see photos on what this show is about.

In addition, I review blogged the 2010 SGV Comic Book Expo in blog #3239a - Part 1, and blog #3239b  - Part 2. .

This is the link to my special 2013 photo album on the 2013 SGV Comic Book Expo, where I will be uploading photos taken at the event.

Hope to see you there at the 2013 SGV Comic Book Expo!   And I wonder what we will be drinking there, as it isn't at the Cuban Club this year, (see blog #3239a), so no mojitos!

~ Michael

My Take On: The Complete Steve Canyon On TV Volume 2 DVD!

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3869 -    Back in blog #3827, I mentioned meeting John Ellis, (pictured above), who sat with me on a panel at the 2013 WonderCon.

After the WonderCon was over, (we were one of the last panels of the 3-day event),  John was one of those that went to the Marriott for a quick bite of dinner and a drink.

I've already review blogged the first DVD volume in this three volume set, and wanted to mention how good this second volume was... Continuing the goodness from volume one of the set.  This second volume contained episodes 13 - 24 of the first (and only) year of the TV show.

One of the features of this DVD is that the commercials that were aired with the show were also included in this DVD.  It is kind of cool to see those cigarette commericals, as those are no longer allowed on TV shows.

In addition, John is almost finished with Volume 3, so it should be released shortly.  He is already taking pre-orders for that volume.

If you haven't seen the TV show before, here is the Wikipedia link to it.

For John's blog, here is the link to that. You can see the info on where to order all three of the volumes there.

I thought I would mention this volume we finished viewing, as yesterday was Memorial Day, as I blogged about in blog #3868.  Although Steve Canyon's comic strip ended in 1988, shortly after the death of his creator, Milton Caniff, he lives on via reprints and now this DVD set.

Oh, and there are also several comic book publications that have been printed since 1948 on Steve Canyon.  Here is the link to the Grand Comics Database for those.

My thanks again to John Ellis, who turned us on to this great show via his DVD set!  Don't miss out on ordering a copy (or all three) for yourself!

~ Michael

Celebrating Memorial Day Weekend of 2013 With Comic Books!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3868 -    In memory of the many soldiers who have served our country with bravery and honor... Today's blog post is on why we have the day off as a holiday.

So what is 'Memorial Day' all about?

Here is the link to the Wikipedia entry, as to when and where the 'Memorial Day' holiday started.

Here is the link to Comics.org, where you can find other comic books that have theme related covers.  There aren't any true 'Memorial Day' comic books with that title, however, so don't bother looking via those key words.

To help you look, here is a link to Batman #30 from August / September of 1945 with the 7th War Loan front cover.

This is the link to Superman #12 from September / October of 1941 with Superman posing with a sailor and an army man.

Plus, a link to World's Finest #5 from Spring of 1942 with Batman, Robin & Superman.

There are several more front covers with this theme... Have some fun checking them out at the Comics.org web site!

And yes, before I forget to mention it, the comic book pictured at the top right of this blog is Sgt. Fury & His Howling Commandos #18, cover dated May of 1965.  The title of the story says it all... "Killed In Action"!

Take some time during this three day weekend to remember what Memorial Day is truly about!

~ Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents Tina LoSasso's Review of...

The Walking Dead

Free Comic Book Day
(FCBD) Special

From the 2013 Free Comic Book Day Event!

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3867 -    Today's blog is guest blogged by my wife, Tina LoSasso! (Pictured at the top left photo.)

Knowing that I love AMC's The Walking Dead (but don't read the comic book that it's based on because it's just too dark for this wussy girl), Michael picked up a copy of The Walking Dead FCBD Special for me earlier this month. He asked me to review it for you since he doesn't read TWD or watch the show (because he's a bigger wuss than I am.)

This special issue by TWD team of Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard and Cliff Rathburn was created for two reasons. One to give fans of the TV show a reason to go to a comic book store for FCBD. And second, to give fans of the comic a collectible they won't find anywhere else. The special contains an original Tyrese story plus reprints of stories on Michonne, The Governor and Morgan. For fans of the show who have been craving more backstory, these are four great stories for you to soak up.

If you're a fan of the comic, you're going to want this because of the Tyrese story. Fans of the tv show will learn that Tyrese has ALWAYS been a really bad shot. If you collect TWD, you will want the special because you won't be able to get this issue any other way - it is unique to FCBD.

Fortunately, my husband snaps up free stuff like Glenn on a supply run. He managed to score a couple extra copies of this special issue which you can check out here.

As a fan of the tv show, I enjoyed pouring over this FCBD special starting with Michonne's short story that reveals how she got her pets. It's a trip to see her running around in a skirt suit and high heels. Next up is the original story of Tyrese and how he bonded with his trusty hammer. Probably the most moving story is the one where Morgan still manages to give Duane Christmas in the midst of the apocalypse. The special closes with the tale of why the Governor started his zombie head aquarium. The story shows show-only fans of TWD just how different the comic book Governor is from David Morrissey's portrayal. It makes you appreciate his cunningly charming depiction of villany much, much more.

You can learn more about The Walking Dead Free Comic Book Day 2013 Special in an interview writer/creator Robert Kirkman did with Free Comic Book Day.

If you'd like one of those copies Michael snared, click here.
