Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On...

Telikos Protocol
Issue 1

The Telikos Protocol booth at the 2013 Free Comic Book Day event in Rancho Cucamonga!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3853 -    This past weekend my youngest son, Vinnie, and I attended the Free Comic Book Day event in Rancho Cucamonga.   One of the nice things about this event at 4 Color Fantasies is that while we were standing in line for a couple of hours plus, we were in line in front of several comic book creators and small press publishers!

One of those people I met for the first time was the nice lady shown in the top right photo.

She introduced me to 'Telikos Protocol' via issue 1 of what I believe to be a proposed 9 issue series.

I had not seen this series before, and stopped for a while to see what it was about.  Seeing my interest, she told me about the project, and I told her that I review blogged indie comics.  She gave me a copy of Issue 1 for possible review.

So what is the comic book about?  Here's the publisher's promo:

Earth. 2294.

In the wake of ecological and environmental disaster, humanity stands on the brink of extinction, the world the human race have resided on dying all around them. Struggling to find answers, humanity looks out to the stars for their continued survival, not realising that their last hope could turn out to be their greatest enemy.

Okay... So what's my take on this?

Front Cover - Pretty sharp cover!  Grabbed my attention right away at the FCBD event I was at.

Inside Front Cover  - The top 2/3 of the page is a well done graphic illustration.  The rest of the page is the credits, and publishing info. Plus the Facebook Fan Page link and their Twitter account link. Good job on this page!

Splash Page - Not really a splash page as this page goes right into the storyline.  Right away I can see that style of illustration is different.  But the text keeps me occupied reading, and I turn the page...

The panels are strangely set, but in readable format.  The colors are subdued which goes with the storyline.

I hit the first full page pinup of artwork... Pretty nice and impressive!

The credits to the comic are finally reached several pages into the storyline.  Writer: Peter Cooper, Artist: Adam Burn, and Letters: Justin Korthof.  Those credits are shown on another full page of art.

The story continues... I recognize another full art page that was shown as a poster at the FCBD booth.  Pretty stunning!

I keep reading and realize that this is a longer than standard size comic book... Which is okay by me!

I finally reach the last story page and realize that it is a 'to be continued' issue.

The inside back cover is a pinup page for issue #2 that is 'coming soon'.

I'll have to check that out!

The back cover is a full page house ad for 'Cycops', another Vanquish Interactive comic book.!

So what was my 'grade' for this comic book?

Well.. I've got to give it a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grade.  That's because there isn't any mention of how many issues are in this story arc, other than a 2nd issue.   I found the artwork to be fantastic and the storyline to be one that I would consider following for a few more issues.   But am left wondering how many issues there are in this series?

Here is the link to buy the comic book in print format.

Here is the link to buy the comic book in digital format.

Here is the Facebook Fan Page for Telikos Protocol.

I'll be looking to see what happens in this series in the issues to follow.

~ Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On The...

Mat Nastos Sketch Book Volume One!

Mat Nastos at the 2013 Free Comic Book Day event in Rancho Cucamonga!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3852 -    This past weekend my youngest son, Vinnie, and I attended the Free Comic Book Day event in Rancho Cucamonga.   One of the nice things about this event at 4 Color Fantasies is that while we were standing in line for a couple of hours plus, we were in line in front of several comic book creators and small press publishers!

One of those people I knew from seeing at comic cons in the past few years.  I've only see him on the attendance side of the tables, not on the other side of the table as an exhibitor.

So I was a little surprised at what he had on his table.  What Mat is shown holding in the photo at the top right is 'Mat Nastos Sketch Book Volume One'

What I also found out is that Mat is a graduate of the Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, in 1992.

Here is an incomplete list of Mat's works in comics, as shown at the Grand Comics Database.

Mat also went to the School of Visual Arts in New York, graduating in 1994.

Mat is also the owner of Nifty Entertainment, aka Nifty Comics.

So after all of the above... I'm back to this Sketch Book.

The front cover is a double cover spread, with Wolverine as the main character. Not bad, and it is color!  Blake Wilkie did the coloring.

However, the inside pages are not in color, just black & white.  Which is okay, because this is supposed to be a sketch book!

The inside front cover has an Image 'Infinite' cover illustrated by Mat, and the indicia at the bottom of the page.

The following pages are either one page illos or double page illos.  There are a few pages with trading cards illustrations, so those number about nine to a page.

The artwork is from the 1990s to the 2010s.

I especially liked his FF cover, and the Incredible Hulk cover with the Thing, that Mat illustrated in 2011.

There were some other pieces that I found quite interesting.  For the most part, the pages were mostly on superheroes from DC & Marvel, but there were a few pages on Elfquest characters, and also Star Wars characters, plus Doctor Who & Walking Dead illos.

This 40 page Sketchbook is a pretty good representation of Mat's art as far as I could tell.

I would have to give this Sketchbook a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

This Sketchbook is for sale at this link

Although this sketchbook is not listed for sale at Amazon, some of Mat's other works are shown at this page.

In addition, I noticed a few miscellanous works by Mat at the eBay sales page.

Here's some of Mat's other pages:

Mat Nastos on DeviantArt

Mat Nastos on Facebook

Thanks Mat for introducing me to your works!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions That The Programming Schedule For The

Long Beach Comic Con Expo
Is Now Online!

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3851 -    This blog is an update from my blog #3842, where I reminded you that the weekend after Free Comic Book Day is... The Long Beach Comic Con (LBCC) One Day Expo in Long Beach, California!

Since then, the LBCC folks have uploaded their programming schedule!  Which can found via this link

I've already checked it out and wanted to mention the two programs that both Tina and I will definitely be attending during the day.

Those are:

11 AM - 11:45 AM - Building Your Comic Book Collection in Room 103B.  Bob Bretall is the host of this program and he talks about tips and tricks for building up your own comics collection!

Then at 5 PM - 5:45 PM - There is a program titled: Marketing On A Shoestring Budget - Hosted by Dale Wilson of BuyIndieComics.com and Dani Dixon of Tumble Creek Press.  I've seen both of them on programs before and they always have a wealth of information to share!  This time they are sharing 10 important things that any indie publisher or creator can do to get their indie comic seen & bought!

And yes... there are other programs during the day, but I wanted to hi-light the two that Tina and I won't be missing out on!

Oh, and as I said in the earlier blog... I haven't missed one of these One-Day Expos yet!  Nor the Two-Day Cons later on in the Fall of each year!

For those of you that haven't been to this con... Here's all of the photo albums that I have set up for previous LBCCs:

2012 LBCC

2012 LBCC EXPO

2011 LBCC

2011 LBCC EXPO

2010 LBCC

2010 LBCC EXPO

2009 LBCC

Here is a link to Long Beach Comic Con's Facebook Page.

Here is a link to the Long Beach Comic Con's web site.

Okay, after checking out those links, you gotta know that this is one comic con that I really enjoy attending!  Like I said... I haven't missed one yet!   What I enjoy seeing at the One Day Cons are the comic book creators that set up a table and are available for sketches or other commissions.  Plus most are pretty good to talk to if you are a fan of theirs!  Even if you don't know them, stop at their tables and check out their work!

Who is attending this con? Well... Here is the link to the list of those that will be in the Artists Alley section of the con.

Plus here is the guest list of those that will be at the con.

The Long Beach Comic Expo will be held on May 11th at the Long Beach Convention Center from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.

If you are in the Los Angeles Metro Area... Or even in a county nearby, (Like I am in San Diego County), this One Day LBCC Expo is worth the drive!   So I suggest you check it out, if you already haven't been there in a previous year!  And if you already been there before, you know it is worth the drive!

See you there!   And don't forget to check out a couple of the programs during the day!

~ Michael

Mighty Mouse Blue Cream!

 alt=
Fly on over to your nearest Rocket Fizz because we've teamed up with iconic Golden Records to bring you the mighty, Mighty Mouse theme song blue cream soda "Here I Come To Save The Day!"!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3850 -    This past weekend my youngest son, Vinnie, and I attended the Free Comic Book Day event in Rancho Cucamonga.   One of the nice things about this event at 4 Color Fantasies is that while we were standing in line for a couple of hours plus, I went over to the food stand where our tickets got us a free hot dog each!   Which helped make the wait more bearable!

After staying there for four hours in total, we headed back down to Carlsbad, which is 1 & 1/2 hours away.  We of course had to stop at Tom's Farms in Corona for a break!   I always try to stop there, to pick up divinity, chocolate, and vanilla fudge samplers!   Which I did again this time, LOL!

While there, since it was just Vinnie and myself on this drive, I decided to check out what else was on hand.   Besides all kinds of candy, nuts, etc., Tom's Farms of course has a fruit / vegetable stand.  In that area there was also a large cooler.  So as I wandered over there, I came across a bunch of 'strange' pops!  Including this Blue Cream bottle.  Of course it was the Mighty Mouse on the label that caught my eyes!

So while I bought one for me, Vinnie picked up a Chocolate Creme Soda, which he had never had one.  But it didn't have a cartoon character on the label.

So anyways, I started drinking mine on the way back down to Carlsbad.  It was very smooth to the taste, and refreshing.  Enough so that when I got back home, I had to look up the producers of this soda pop, RocketFizz.com

As you can see by their web site, they have quite a few sodas to sample!  And the Rocket Fizz people mentioned the  'Golden Records' logo on the label.  Golden Records has their own web site.   So there is quite a bit of extra reading to be done, if you are interested!

Oh, and the RocketFizz folks are a franchise opportunity!  As it is actually Rocket Fizz Soda Pop & Candy Shops.  Take a look if you have interest at the tabs on their web site for more info.

Also for more info, and to be interactive with Rocket Fizz... Be sure to check their Facebook Fan Page!

Anyways, I just had to bring this soda pop to your attention today, as it was darn good, and comic book related.  You never know what you will find at Tom's Farms!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents Vinnie's Take On...

Forever Freshman #2

Vinnie with Neil Segura at the Forever Freshman booth at the 2013 FCBD!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3849 -    This past weekend my youngest son, Vinnie, and I attended the Free Comic Book Day event in Rancho Cucamonga.   While we were standing in line for a couple of hours, we passed several booths with comics creators and small press publishers.

One of the booths had Neil Segura and Ray Mendevil with their Forever Freshman comic books.  Vinnie had previously blogged the 'Preview' issue of this comic book back in blog #3435.  So Neil gave Vinnie a copy of issue #2 of the comic book series for possible review.  Here's Vinnie's Take on the comic book:

While at the FCBD event (which you can read a blog post about here) this past Saturday, I saw many comic creators and publishers. I had the chance to see the creators of "Forever Freshman," a comic by Neil Segura and Ray Mendivil, which I had previously read and reviewed, which can be found here. We talked for awhile, and they gave me the second issue to read. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, seeing as I am a freshman in high school now as well.

The story, which is a collaborative of both Ray and Neil, but written by Ray, is fun and reminiscient of what happens in highschool. The two characters, Neil and Ray, who are based off of the creators, have a fight and nearly end their friendship over a girl. However, after watching a chick-flick, they realize that they can't be fighting, and their friendship is saved. At the same time, their principal, DeMaskero, tries to catch them to put them in detention. They also skip school with the girl, Annie, who they were originally fighting over, and go on a kung-fu-chili-fueled adventure. In the end, Annie chooses another guy over Ray or Neil, which was the best thing for them, as they remained friends. DeMaskero ends up catching them, and they now have to attend Saturday School.

One thing I noticed was that when they were hallucinating from eating too much chili, Ray asked the girl "Annie, are you ok?" followed by Neil saying "Are you ok, Annie?" which happens to be in a Michael Jackson song. Whether or not that was intentional, I do not know, but I did find it mildy amusing.

The art, which was done by Neil, is quite detailed for being so cartoony. The first page shows an elaborate design of the evil principal's office as he is scolding the hall monitors and brewing up a nasty plan to catch Ray and Neil. The creators also had special permission to include characters from the "Reed Gunther" comic books, and they made a "cameo appearance" in one of the panels. There is also a full two-page picture of the three kids' journey which is just unbelievable. It shows them all fighting off a giant ant, talking to the toad king, rocking out with Neil on guitar, Ray on drums, and Annie singing, and each one on a majestic steed; a dragon for Ray, a giant eagle for Neil, and the seahorsicorn for Annie, as she holds onto the magic key. The inside back cover shows the ancient Chinese scroll detailing the ingredients for the kung-fu chili. Unfortunately, the part of the scroll telling of the secret ingredient was either burned or torn off, and will forever remain a secret.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed "Forever Freshman" issue 2. The story was interesting and the art was beautiful. I give it a Near Mint (NM), a 9.4 out of 10.0 grade scale. Those guys did an awesome job. You can also visit their website for more information or to pick up a copy of any of their issues for yourself.

~ Vinnie
