Topic: Comic Book Writers
I just became Facebook Friends this weekend with Dan Merritt, the co-owner of the Green Brain Local Comic Book Store (LCBS) in Dearborn, Michigan... When I asked if he had any upcoming events that would be of interest to my Blog readers, (like I ask of all my newest Facebook Friends), he replied with the following press release. I am basically running it verbatim, since it is happening Wednesday of this week, for a good cause, and because of who the special guest at the LCBS will be: VETERAN COMIC WRITER APPEARS FOR HEROIC CAUSE On Wednesday, August 12th Green Brain Comics welcomes veteran comic writer William Messner-Loebs for a book signing to celebrate the release of Hero Comics: A Hero Initiative Benefit Book. William Messner-Loebs or Bill to his pals, is a Michigander and a veteran comic writer and artist with an impressive resume of past projects. Perhaps best known for his run as writer on Wonder Woman, his work also includes a long stint on Flash for DC Comics and a short run on Thor for Marvel Comics. Mr Loebs has worked with artist Sam Keith on The Maxx for Image and a critically acclaimed graphic novel entitled Epicurus the Sage. He is also known for his work as an artist on his creator owned series Journey: The Adventures of Wolverine MacAlistaire. Loebs' has overcome many obstacles. He was born with a cancerous tumor on his right arm, which had to be amputated when he was still an infant. In recent years, he has been in a car accident, lost his house and gone through long periods without work. As a freelancer, Bill has never had real job security or the benefits that would provide. Recently he and his wife Nadine have received crucial help from an organization called Hero Initiative. The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need. Hero creates a financial safety net for yesterday's creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for the essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It's a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment. Hero Comics: A Hero Initiative Benefit Book features new work from Loebs. It will also feature two covers, Eve by J. Scott Campbell, and Grendel by Matt Wagner and all-new content including an original American Flagg! story by Howard Chaykin, and original stories by Gene Ha, Bill Willingham, David Lloyd, and Kaare Andrews. The signing is on August 12th from 5 to 8pm followed immediately by a comic jam, where the public is invited to participate in creating improvised comic pages with other local artists. Green Brain Comics is located at 13210 Michigan Avenue in East Downtown Dearborn. For more info call 313-582-9444 or check out www.greenbrain.biz
