Boston Comic Con Sunday November 2nd, 2008 Only! For those of you that can't make it to APE in San Francisco this weekend, well then comic con is right up your alley! This Comic Con is one day only at the Back Bay Events Center. The Guest List includes: Peter Laird, who is the co-creator of the TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). Berni Wrightson, who is the co-creator of DC Comics' Swamp Thing! I have had the pleasure of seeing Berni Wrightson in person, and hearing him speak about his career in the comics industry. There is no mention on whether or not there are any panels or programs at this one day con.... Plenty of People Are Going APE* This Weekend! ( *Alternative Press Expo 2008 That Is ! )
Just had another email from a different exhibitor who will be at The Alternative Press Expo, better known as 'APE', reminding me that the Show is this coming weekend! APE is being held once again in its home of many years, the San Francisco Concourse. The APE event is on November 1st and 2nd, right after Halloween Night. So the event promoters are urging attendees to come to San Francisco early, and celebrate that spookiest of holidays in the beautiful city by the Bay before hitting the APE Exhibit Hall! So what is APE?? APE is... "one of the country’s largest gatherings of the best in indie comics, offering a venue for exhibitors ranging from self-publishers of minicomics to such large publishers as SLG Publishing, Fantagraphics, Drawn and Quarterly, Oni Press, Top Shelf, and many more". As an attendee, you will find a huge assortment of some of the best 'indie' and 'alternative' comics material out there: via graphic novels, ’zines, art books, prints, original art, and comics of every size and shape! Even if you don't stop and buy a bagful or two of goodies, you may be inspired to go home and create some of your own comics! So Who's going to be there? The special guest list for APE 2008 includes Jessica Abel (La Perdida), Paige Braddock (Jane’s World), Megan Kelso (The Squirrel Mother), Matt Madden (99 Ways to Tell a Story), Ethan Nicolle (Chumble Spuzz, courtesy of SLG Publishing), and Chris Ware (The ACME Novelty Library). This event is brought to you by the same folks that are bringing you the: ... Bat-Manga! The Secret History of Batman In Japan!
I've just become FaceBook Friends with Chip Kidd, (pictured below), who informed me that his new book was just released this week! The book features long forgotten Batman stories by manga artist Jiro Kuwata. 'Bat Manga!' was released in both hardcover and softcover editions on October 28, 2008. I have not received a preview copy, nor have I bought or read this book yet, but I wanted all of our Batman fans to be aware of its' publication this week, as the press I've seen so far is favorable for this book! Source material for this book included the original pages from Shonen King magazine. Those earlier pages were photographed for Bat Manga! by Geoff Spear, to capture the printing and colors of the manga. Thus the material is not new, rather it is from a project that dates back to 1966, when the Batman TV show, starring Adam West, was a sensation in America and was imported to Japan. At that time Shonen King, a boys' manga anthology jumped at the chance and commissioned manga artist Jiro Kuwata to create new Caped Crusader stories for Japanese audiences. Those stories and more subjects of Batman in Japan are reproduced in this book, and this book should make a fine addition to Batman TV Show fans' collections. For those of you that are new to our blog today, we have an ongoing 'Comics Con and Pop Culture Show' ourselves here at "Make It So Marketing Inc.", what with our daily blog posts and new listings of items for sale in our online store!
