With Buck Rogers Being Made Into A Film Again...

Why Not A John Carter of Mars Film?!

I was reading that there are at least eighty-three (83) comic books that are in some stage of being developed for the Big Screen!

What I have blogged about previously is that certain themes or ideas seem to come around every twenty years or so, and quite often end up looking like a re-tread.... trying to cash in on a project that once had a 'name' value.

'Buck Rogers' has been around for many decades, and has even recently been re-done as a TV series that didn't quite find its' audience....

Now it appears that 'Buck Rogers' may find its' way into the theaters with a projected film date of 2011!  Sorry, but IMHO Buck Rogers has been brought back enough times already!

Instead.... how about (ERB) Edgar Rice Burrough's John Carter of Mars as a film project?? John's story goes like this:

John Carter was an Earthman who upon negotiating a cave, (spelunking),  encountered a strange light. When the light touched him, he seemed to split into two, one part staying on Earth and the other part teleporting to the planet Mars.

(Believe it or not, this was ERB's first hero, pre-dating his work on Tarzan of the Apes, and Tarzan's son Korak.)

That above was the premise of a comic book series from Gold Key Comics and later from Marvel Comics. It was also a lead feature strip in a DC Comics Title!  So there should be some people that know John Carter's story!

The Gold Key series ran for 3 issues from April 1964 to October 1964.

The DC series ran in Weird Worlds for a while in 1972.

The Marvel series ran for 28 issues from June 1977 to October 1979.

Actually, there had been earlier versions of John Carter, the first being in 1939's "The Funnies" Issue #30.  So Carter's story is almost as old as Buck Rogers, but not as familar....

Anyway, the above is my thought on not re-making another version of Buck Rogers.... instead doing John Carter as a sword and sorcery adventurer on another planet!

For those interested in reading more of John Carter, we do have several of the different versions of the John Carter Comics run listed in our eBay Featured Store.

Personalized Signed Comics!
Mood:  a-ok

Click Here To See Our SIGNED or PERSONALIZED Comics and Magazines!

Above is a 1992 photo of Sharon Blair who was the superhero 'Synn' on the cover of Femforce #51. She is shown personalizing  / signing my copy of that issue.

Personalized Signed Comic Books

Can Be Great Gifts This Time Of Year!

This time of year it can be hard to buy your friends or family members gifts that they will enjoy!

However, IF the friend or family member is a comic book fan, then it can be a little easier if you know of a comic book convention or a comic book store signing that is happening near you!

Which is one of the reasons that we blog about upcoming comic cons here! Many comics creators attend these conventions, and either can be found at autograph booths, or in an artists' alley where their works are available for sale and are more than willing to personalize their works for you!

You should be able to easily find out what comic books or graphic novels your friend or family member enjoys reading or collecting.

Then just attend a comic convention or even a local comic book store (LCBS) book signing to have a comic or graphic signed / personalized to that friend or family member!

If you can't make it to any of those conventions or LCBS signings, then there are a couple of companies that actually do have creators sign their works, and are sold with a Certificate Of Authenticity (COA) for an extra premium amount over the cover price of the item.

Additionally several creators are either self published or have their own web site where they have their own works for sale and can personalize and / or sign their creations for you when asked....

At the top left of this blog post is a photo of Sharon Blair dressed as 'Synn' of FemForce, who in 1992, signed and personalized a special photo cover issue of herself for me.

That was just one of many comics, graphic novels, and books that I have had signed over the many years I have been collecting.

I still find it relatively hard to get all the autographs I would like to get, even though Tina and I attend many conventions! So it is really nice when a friend or family member attends a con we can't get to and has someone to sign their creative work and send it as a gift to me!

For those of you that are new to our blog today, we also have an ongoing 'Comic Con, Sci-Fi Show, and Pop Culture Convention'  here at "Make It So Marketing Inc.", what with our daily blog posts and new listings of items for sale in our online eBay Featured Store

To complement this blog post's topic... We also have a few signed items for sale listed there, and if your friend's name is Michael, then you might want to check out what personalized items we have for sale by clicking here.

Oh.... and Happy Thanksgiving Day today!

What I Was Thankful For... Last Year At This Time....

What I Was Thankful For...

Last Year At This Time....

Last year at this time I had a blog series of whom I was thankful for...

This year I haven't blogged a series like that, but I do find after checking our blog stats today, that those archived blog posts are being viewed by several other bloggers...

So that I can share those posts once again for those that are new to this blog, here are the links to those blog posts from last year at this time. The series was entitled:

Whom I Am Thankful For...

Part  I -   Stan Lee, who celebrated his 85th birthday this year. Stan and Jack Kirby were the reasons I started collecting comics, instead of just reading 'funnybooks'.

Part  II -  Engineer Bill ... who has passed away earlier this year since this blog was posted. He had a great afternoon kids show with cartoons in Los Angeles during my childhood there...

Part III -  Sheriff John ... who also died since then in 2008. He was another of my favorite kids TV Shows hosts in Los Angeles.

Part  IV - Fess Parker.... Davy Crockett!  ... who turned 84 years old in August!  One of my best Holiday Seasons was in 2003 when we stayed at his Inn in Los Olivos! (See above top photo of us with him.)

Looking at the above list, I am glad that I blogged about these four persons who helped guide me into the person that I am today...

I am of course also Thankful for a LOT of other people, and they will be mentioned as the year(s) go on in this blog...

For those of you that are new to our blog today, we have an ongoing 'Comic Con and Pop Culture Convention'  here at "Make It So Marketing Inc.", what with our daily blog posts and new listings of items for sale in our online eBay Featured Store!

Thanks for reading this blog post today, and please join us again!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

It's A New Mini-Series!

 "I Hate Gallant Girl"

By Kat Cahill & Seth Damoose

"Meeting" new comics creators on Facebook is great, because I can blog about their works here... right now, instead of waiting to see them at a convention to find out about their latest publication!

I just became Facebook Friends with Kat Cahill, who messaged me that she just had her debut issue of her comic book mini-series distributed on November 12th, 2008!

The comic book was published through Shadowline/Image Comics. Issue number two arrives December 3, 2008 with the final issue of the three issue mini arriving January 14, 2009.

So what is the mini-series about?

Well, the comic book follows a young woman named Renée Tempete.  She aspires to be the next 'Gallant Girl'...

'Gallant Girl' is actually a "legacy super-heroic identity" whose host is determined every ten years by pageant! Gallant Girl is the sole female member of the 'Fellowship of Freedom'.

I have not read the entire first issue yet, so I didn't want to list more about the mini-series premise other than that!

(I've actually only read five of the story pages from the first issue and viewed the three covers of the mini-series.)

But.... Here is where Kat Cahill's story becomes one that many would love to have happen to them:  “I Hate Gallant Girl” took an unusual route to the comics stands, in that it was part of a contest that was held by Shadowline.

Shadowline asked writers to submit their concepts for consideration, and from those thousands of entries, only five were voted on by the public!

Of the five, it was a different concept that was the actual 'winner' and that concept has already been published. However, "I Hate Gallant Girl", was such a favorite runner up that it too was selected for publication!

So, here's a comic book mini-series about a super-heroine that our blog readers might want to seek out either at their LCBS, or at their favorite online store...

Let us know what you think of this storyline should you read it!  We'll have to do the same when we find our copy!

A 'Wovel' Titled "Firstworld" !

A 'Wovel'

Titled

 "Firstworld"

By Jemiah Jefferson

I recently became Facebook Friends with Jemiah Jefferson, who informed me this weekend that her newest creative work is being published in a 'wovel' format.

'Wovel'?  Yes, a 'wovel' !

One of the newest publishers, Underland Press, has as an 'extra' on their web site, a "Wovel" (short for "web novel"); which is written in weekly installments, (currently by Jemiah!) and, at the end of each weekly chapter, the readers get to vote on the direction that the story takes!

The url to the wovel is provided here: underlandpress.com/wovel.cfm

So what happens to the 'wovel'?

Well.... The author first writes it. Then the readers vote on it. Here's how it works online:

"Every week, the author posts an installment. Installment length hits the sweet-spot of online reading—long enough to get interested, short enough to read in the cubicle at work. At the end of every installment, the author writes in a plot branch point. Does the heroine kill her lover? Will the zombies catch the soldier? Is the box empty, or is it filled with bees?"

THEN THE READERS DECIDE!

"On Monday, the post goes up. Voting is open through Thursday. The author writes Thursday and Friday. The editors edit Friday and Saturday. The post goes back up on Monday. Part literature, part exquisite corpse. The pace of print journalism, the imagination of fiction, the spark of reader participation."

Again, to follow along the storyline and vote on where the 'wovel' goes, you have to go to the url listed above, read it, and then vote. Then come back to the url to see where the readers/voters have decided where the author should take the story.... Sounds Cool? Try it!

For those that would like to know more about Jemiah, the following is a brief bio:

"Jemiah Jefferson was born in Denver, Colorado and started writing fiction at the age of twelve. Her publications include the novels Voice of Blood, Wounds, Fiend, and A Drop of Scarlet.... She has also written fiction, essays, and criticism for Willamette Week, Just Out, Plazm, and 2GRLZ Quarterly!"

Just bringing this author and her latest work to the attention of our blog readers, as Jemiah is also an Editor with Dark Horse Comics, as well as an accomplished Author! Jemiah has her own web site where you can keep up with her at jemiah.com !

For those of you that are new to our blog today, we have an ongoing 'Comic Con, Sci-Fi Show, and Pop Culture Convention'  here at "Make It So Marketing Inc.", what with our daily blog posts and new listings of items for sale in our online eBay Featured Store!
