TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3163:

Saturday I spent most of the day at the San Diego Quarterly Comic Con, (which is a new start-up con). Today, before I get back to blogging review blogs, I want to mention a comic book inker that I met there, Ryan Winn...

What grabbed my attention at first was that his portfolio book was opened to the comic book page that is pictured at the above right.  Well, being a Fantastic Four Fan since 1962, I couldn't help but stop and look at it closer! 

Ryan and I started talking further, and I ended up looking at his other comic book works that he had at his table. Of course one table wouldn't have everything he has done so far.

I am glad that he had the Fantastic Four page opened on his table at this Con that got my attention!

For those of YOU that haven't heard about this start up comic con that I met Ryan Winn above, it's a 'start-up' in the sense that the promoter, Paul Martinez, is re-starting a comic con that he used to run about 10 - 11 years ago when it ended its' original run.

I used to set up at his earlier con, that would be held at the Scottish Rite Center here in the San Diego area, and it was a lot of fun doing so at that time!

I spent some time with Paul Martinez on Saturday about the revival of his earlier comic con, and what he is looking to do with this. This June 2010 show had experienced and well known comics industry people such as Batton Lash and Jackie Estrada, (as pictured below), as well as newcomers looking to make their big break in the business, such as Kev Whiting, whom I'm sure I'll be blogging sometime in the future!

Yesterday I spent most of the day at the San Diego Quarterly Comic Con, (which is a new start-up con), and need to catch up with my purchases made there plus sort and categorize photos and new information that I picked up there for future blogging...

So what I want to do this morning is to update you all on what happened last weekend at the 2010 Heroes Con...on the Inkwell Awards.  I've blogged about the Inkwell Awards several times before, (click here for earlier blogs), and thus updates on this great award program is something I want to blog here as the year goes on:

Inkwell Awards: 2010 Heroes Con a hit!

The Inkwell Awards made their first visit down south to the legendary Charlotte, NC Heroes Con on June 4-6 and it was undoubtedly a resounding success.

This event marked the second appearance of their spokesperson Ms. Inkwell, this time portrayed by model Hanna Pawlowska. "I thought Ms. Inkwell at Pittsburgh Con was a hit but this time she brought it to a new level" said Bob Almond, Director of the non-profit organization. "She introduced herself to the artist community at the venue requesting fundraising donations. We cannot get over the support from both the community and the fans and we received a lot of positive and inspiring vocal feedback. I want to give special thanks to our model liaison artist Louis Small, Jr., Bob Shaw, and the volunteers who made this work out so smoothly.

We're still learning but it's nice to know that we're doing something right and have struck a positive chord within the industry. We're planning a Ms. Inkwell-themed donation book next year, with an introduction by our Hall of Fame namesake Joe Sinnott, which will consist of all design info and art for the character as well as a gallery of artist interpretations of the sexy Ms. India Wells, inspired by Randy Green's design and the models who've portrayed her. She's on the cover of the recent 2010 Donation Drive book."

Another exciting development is the recruitment of superstar Marvel artist Mark Brooks to the team as the newest ambassador to lend his name to the organization is support.

Bob said "Mark has been in touch with me since the beginning in early 2008 offering his aid to our mission and last fall I asked him to join our Nomination Committee but there was regrettably a schedule conflict that occurred and he had to back out. But upon talking to him at Heroes we came to the conclusion that this role would fit him best and he could actively assist us from time to time as his schedule warranted.

Mark joins a short list of notable names on our ambassador list such as editor Mike Marts and artists Ethan Van Sciver and Adam Hughes and he marks our first Marvel Comics-based talent. It warms my heart to no end to have such notable comic book creators aboard in support."

Heroes Con capped the Inkwell Awards show schedule for now which will resume at Wizard World: Big Apple on October 1-3.

Then it will be Wizard World: New England on October 15-17 when Wizard Entertainment will sponsor the first Inkwell Awards live awards ceremony with Ms. Inkwell and tentatively Joe Sinnott appearing for the festivities. More info can be found at Wizard World as those event dates get closer.

The Inkwell Awards is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and educate about the craft of comic book inking and to annually recognize and award the ink artists and their work.

Now in their third year, the organization is overseen by a number of industry professionals such as founder & director Bob Almond, Daniel Best, Jimmy Tournas, Bob Shaw, Nathan Massengill and fully-supported by ambassadors DC editor Mike Marts and artists Adam Hughes and Ethan Van Sciver, all of whom make up the Inkwell Awards committee. They sponsor the Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon & Graphic Art and host the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award. 

My thanks to Bob Almond and the Inkwell Awards committee for sharing the above press release info with me.  I normally don't run PRs verbatim, but again, I'm just back from a full day at a comic con yesterday, and the above is near & dear to my heart, as inkers just haven't had the respect they have deserved all these years!

Howard Post a.k.a. Howie Post 1926 - 2010 At the right: Howie going over his comic strip.

The passing of Howard W Post, a.k.a. 'Howie Post' on May 21st slipped by my blogging notice. I want to correct that oversight here today...

First a brief 'bio' on Howie, then my thoughts:

Howard Post was born November 2, 1926 in New York City. By the time he passed away on May 21st of 2010, he had been at different periods of his life: an animator, cartoonist and a comic strip and comic book writer and artist.

Howard started in art at an early age. It was as a teenager that he attended the Hastings School of Animation, which was located in New York City.

Due to his father being stricken with tuberculosis and hospitalized, Howard as a teenager became the primary breadwinner for the family of four.

As did several others that later entered the comic book industry, Howard started as an in-betweener.  His first work was at Paramount Pictures' animation studio, Famous Studios.

Howie's earliest confirmed comic book art appeared in 1945. He then had several features in National (DC) Comics. It was in the 1950's that illustrated several 'funnybook' series, both for DC and Atlas (Marvel) Comics. 

However, he also illustrated in a few other genres, including westerns, and HoRRoR comics. For Atlas that included Journey into Mystery, Uncanny Tales, and Mystery Tales.

During the ups and downs of the comic book industry, Howie also worked for Harvey Comics and Dell Comics.  His career extended into the 1980's where he worked for Atlas' successor, Marvel Comics.

At one time during all of this, Howie became the head of Paramount Cartoon Studios. So Howie definitely kept busy throughout his long career.

I took a look at what was posted about Howie since his passing.  Although it kept being brought up that he is known for his syndicated newspaper comic strip "The Dropouts" which had a 13-year run, it is for his comic book work that I most knew about him...

If all credits had been posted  back when I was first reading comics, I would have recoginzed him first for his Harvey Comics work on 'Hot Stuff'.

But for me, it was his credits on the 'Anthro' comic book series that I best knew of his work. 

Unfortunately, where I was at, the bi-monthly DC comic book was not well distributed. 

Which come to think of it, most of those bi-monthly DC titles with new characters didn't get well distributed at my 7-11s where I usually shopped at back then...

Anthro had started in Showcase #74, as pictured here, back in May of 1968.  His own series ran for six issues, from August of 1968 to August of 1969. It was really different, probably too different for the time.  Plus it didn't fit in with the rest of the DC Universe of the time.  Unlike the Marvels that I was mostly reading during that time period, where everything seemed to be interconnected, or guest cameos in each other's books!

I mentioned 'Hot Stuff' above.  I would have posted a cover here, but Howie didn't produce any covers with Hot Stuff that I could find in either of the two databases that I use for reference.

However, I did find a unique series from Atlas Comics, that probably portrayed his art style during that time period. 

The title was 'The Monkey and the Bear', of which the 1st issue is shown to the left.

This series ran from September of 1953 to January of 1954. Quite honestly, I've never held an issue in my hands, even though I deal in comics.

(Note for collectors: The 1st issue in NM is $45, while issues #2 & 3 in NM are $28, if You can find them. Currently, out of 1,757,708 comic listing on eBay, Not one of these 3 issues are listed..)

My daughter would know him best for his work on the 'Care Bear' series from Marvel Comics.

That series ran for 20 issues, from November of 1985 to January of 1989.

As you can see from those links, Howie had worked quite a few years in the comic book industry.

His work on the comic strips I won't discuss here, as the strip he is most known for, 'The Dropouts', just wasn't carried by newspapers in my area of Southern California. (LA Times & San Diego Union-Tribune.)  Except maybe on a insertion basis, but I just don't remember that strip.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3160:

Today I want to blog about the upcoming Jonah Hex film that is to be released June 18th.

That's because for the last two weeks, my Jonah Hex archived blog post from Tuesday, December 11th of 2007, as seen here, has been in the Top 10 Most Viewed Archived Blog Posts of this Blog! BTW, I've also blogged about Josh Brolin being named as the actor to portray Jonah Hex back on Friday, June 5th of 2009.

So there definitely is an above average interest in this film, if only gauging by my Blog's stats!

Now to do a topic justice, especially one that is about a comic book character being transformed from comic book to comic book movie, there would have to be more than one blog post, or the blogger is just 'skimming' across the surface of the transformation process.  So I'll attempt to give a little background here about the character in print, with a few teasers of the upcoming movie!

So what is Jonah Hex, the comic book character all about?

Well...In the comic book history that goes back to 1972, (Yes, 1972!), Jonah Woodson Hex is a Western comic book antihero. He was co-created by writer John Albano and artist Tony DeZuniga, (pictured above at the 2010 Wizard World Anaheim Comic Con. 

At that time, it was strangely enough published by DC Comics. I say strangely because in the early 1970's both DC and Marvel Comics were starting to push the boundaries of what could be published in a comic book format.

Jonah Hex is portrayed as a surly and cynical bounty hunter, easily recognized by his face that is horribly scarred on the right side. 

Remember, this is the time period when the Comics Code Authority, (CCA), still held sway over what would and could be published in comics.  Thus he is bound by a personal code of honor to protect and avenge the innocent.

Jonah Hex actually first 'appeared' in a full-page in-house ad for All-Star Western #10. Even though that is not even a 'cameo' or a final page appearance in a 'to be continued' story, that is what a lot of Jonah Hex collectors look for...His '1st appearance' in those house ads which were published in various Nov/Dec 1971 dated DC comic books.

His actual first 1st "full-story" appearance was then published a few weeks later in volume two of the title 'All-Star Western' #10 (1972), which is pictured above. 

Back then there was a lot of jockeying around between the Big Two (DC & Marvel), for newstand space.  A title would be started, and then shortly afterwards renamed to catch the latest trend.  

That's what happened to All-Star Western!   It was renamed 'Weird Western Tales' with its twelfth issue due to all of the HoRRoR / MoNSTer comic titles that were pouring out then.

You'll notice that in All-Star Western, that Jonah Hex was just one of three characters with stories in the comic book.  There was also Bat Lash and El Diablo.  

Well, in the new title, Jonah Hex all but dominated the total number of pages until issue #38.  That's when Scalphunter took over the spotlight of the 'Weird Western Tales' title, while Jonah moved into his own self-titled series, Jonah Hex. 

That new title started in 1977, and lasted for 92 issues with Michael Fleisher as the main writer. Issue #92 was published cover dated August of 1985.

BTW, Scalphunter ran in 'Weird Western Tales' until that title was cancelled in August of 1980.  It lasted a total of 80 issues, including the 11 of it's previous title name.

So, with any comic book character that has been around for 38 years, there are way too many topics to touch upon in a blog post, as first mentioned above.

I'll just mention that seeing Tony DeZuniga again, (co-creator of Jonah Hex), shown above holding the Jonah Hex comic book cover to issue #39 that he illustrated, was fun.  That's because his he and wife Tina, (shown at the bottom right of this blog post), were pleased with the earlier blog post I had blogged on them, after seeing them at the 2009 Long Beach Comic Con.

I mentioned at the top of this blog post that there appears to be a lot of interest in the upcoming film, Jonah Hex. I of course haven't seen it yet, and probably won't see it until it is on DVD, because my wife, Tina, is not thrilled about the movie trailers that are being shown on TV for it.

It is a Warner Bros. film that is being directed by Jimmy Hayward.  It stars Josh Brolin as the title character. It also stars Megan Fox, John Malkovich, Megan Fox, Michael Fassbender and oh, did I mention Megan Fox?  That could be one of the reason why Tina is not at all interested in seeing this film at the Big Screen...  Again, the film is scheduled to be released on June 18, 2010 in the USA. For more info on the upcoming film itself, I'm going to refer you to the Wikipedia Entry here... Please be aware that not all entries posted there are 100% accurate all the time.

For those of you that didn't know me before today...I first set up as a 'dealer' at the 1972 San Diego West Coast Comic Con (SDCC) at the El Cortez Hotel. So I've been around comic conventions for a little while, LOL!   My wife Tina and I now have an on-line exhibitor (dealer) table at the first "virtual" comic con titled the "Facebook Comic Con" (FBCC)! Wait a minute...Did I say 'Metropolis'???

Yes, because there is really a 'Metropolis', in the State of Illinois!

My thanks to Facebook Friend, Sam J. Rizzo, who reminded me about this annual event on Monday.  I met Sam at the 2010 Wizard World Anaheim Comic Con, as pictured above.  Sam runs his SuperboyHomePage.com web site, which you should check out! 

I have blogged about this Superman Celbration a few times before in the recent years, 2008 & 2009, but this year's event almost slipped by me!

Also, I want to mention that I met the man who did the Superman films 'right', since I last blogged about last year's Superman Celebration event. 

That would be Ilya Salkind, Producer of Superman Films I, II, & III!  He and I are pictured above, at his booth, also at the Wizard World Anaheim comic Con.  The folks at Wizard World really know how to bring in media stars!

Ilya's career credits can be seen in his IMDb page.  His bio can been seen in his Wikipedia entry. I found Ilya to be very personable at the con, and am pleased to be his Facebook Friend also.

The Superman Celebration has its' own web site, plus a Facebook Page, and a Facebook Event Page!  Whew!

Is that enough Superman for YOU?!  LOL!

If Not...Then You should check out the 4 Day Event that starts tomorrow!

My thanks again to Sam J. Rizzo for reminding me of this special event!  We are based in San Diego Metro Area, so are not attending this Superman Celebration.

From all of the photos I've seen, it always looks like a lot of fun.  So if you are near that area, check it out this year (or next!).

My thanks also to Ilya Salkind, who proved that a 'man could fly' for me back in 1978!

P.S.  Yeah, that's me in the photo shown to the left, taken at the 1973 San Diego Comic Con that was then located in the Sheraton Hotel on Harbor Island.  Would you believe there was only 1,000+ attendees at that Con?!  Last year, (2009) there was over 126,000 attendees!
