Today's Feature: Blog #3287

Here's a 'Guest Blog' today by my wife, Tina LoSasso!

Semantink Comics Meet Up - November 21st, 2010

I joined Michael at Semantink Comics Meet Up at the Milano Coffee House in Mission Valley on Sunday evening.

As one of only two women in attendance, I felt welcomed by the rest of the group. And, while I didn't always know much about what they were talking about (apparently Spider-Man's going to die again...), they were good sports at answering my questions.

Question #1: What did they think of Green Lantern being played by People's Sexiest Man Alive?

I was surprised by their response. Most really liked the choice of Ryan Reynolds and didn't think that his "Sexiest" new status was a conflict for the character. Many of the guys liked him in the role.  What they didn't like was the new trailer - too much CGI action, bells and whistles, and the Green Lantern outfit (especially the mask) got low votes.

Question #2: Will the Zombie trend ever die and what will come next?

We had a number of Walking Dead fans in attendance who are enjoying the AMC series. So, I asked the group when they thought the zombie trend might be over. (I'm hoping tomorrow!) Some observed that it was already trending down with the number of zombie-themed books launching at conventions down by about one-third since last year. I only hope that the success of Walking Dead isn't encouraging more zombies! As for what will come next, one theory was angels. What a concept replace the dark with the light.

I had to laugh when I discovered how many of the guys had read "Hot Zombie Chicks," an indie comic I cited in my mini-rant on the zombie trend. (I love the title, but can't stomach the graphic images.) A whole bunch of the guys knew the book and loved it. Gross me out!

It was pretty cold outside but the discussion was lively. If you're in the area, check out the next one December 19.

Today's Feature: Blog #3285

Yesterday, we celebrated my youngest son's birthday a little early at his grandparents' house. One of the gifts he received was an 'Amazing' gift, (pun intended), that Tina and I found at the recent Long Beach Comic Con!

That's because we found it in Artists Alley at Cruddie Torian's table.  My son Vinnie is collecting the 'Amazing Spider-Man comics title, and I thought this would be a cool birthday gift for him!

At the top right of this blog post is a photo of Cruddie holding the print. Then I had him personalize it to Vinnie.  We then presented it to Vinnie yesterday, while my dad, Franics, took a photo of that occasion.

In turn, I took a photo of Francis showing Vinnie how to put the screws in the frame, and pull the cardboard backing out that was held by the tabs.  Vinnie proudly held the finished framed print.  Needless to say, Vinnie was pleased with the gift, which will be hung up in his bedroom!

Our thanks to Cruddie for personalizing this great gift for Vinnie!  Which by the way, Vinnie remembered seeing Cruddie at an earlier con that he attended with us, which made it even more special for him!

Cruddie can be 'found' online when he isn't at comic cons or working on comic books.

I've mentioned Cruddie a few times in this Blog of mine.

He's also found via this major search engine: Cruddie Torian as found at Google.

Cruddie had taken over the Gen 13 comic book title in 2009. Here's the announcement and reactions to that at the Wildstorm Blog

I don't see any web site that is Cruddie's own, or any other websites he is affialiated with.  Otherwise I would post that / those here.

Cruddie is on Facebook, but not actively so. So I won't post the link to his personal account here.

Again, my thanks to Cruddie Torian for providing the 'highlight' to my son's birthday yesterday!

Today's Feature: Blog #3284

This upcoming Friday is known as 'Black Friday'!

Although this Blog and our own 'LCBS', (Local Comic Book Shop), are online endeavors, and Not 'in print format' or a 'brick n mortar store', I held a 'Black Friday' Special Facebook Event at this same time period!

This year I'm holding one again online, with a few changes! That's because of several reasons:

1) The Black Friday Event's title is: 'Black Friday Comics Sponsored By Michael D Hamersky On Comics'. That's because this special event is NOT being sponsored by my 'Facebook Comic Con | Make It So Marketing' this year. That is our Facebook 'Group Page' endeavor.

2) I just opened up this past week, a brand new Facebook Fan Page titled:  'Michael D Hamersky On Comics'! That's because for the past three months, I've been held back from adding more 'Facebook Friends' to my Facebook Network, and kept from adding more 'Fan Pages' from others that send me invites to 'fan' their page.  Recently, Facebook changed 'fan' to 'like'.

3) When I first opened up my Personal Facebook Member Page a couple of years ago, I wondered why there were so few others that invited me to their own circle of Facebook Friends or Fan Pages, etc. It took me a little while to 'catch on' to this 'Social Networking'! However, when I did 'catch on', I found that there were benefits in putting myself 'out there'. By that I mean I found that there were opportunities to share my Blog, eBay Store, and photos from comic cons I've attended years ago.  As well as to get to know comics creators 'better' even if it is 'long distance' and not 'face to face', except at current comic cons.

4) I first opened up a Facebook 'Group page', which became affialiated with Michael Netzer's growing Facebook Comic Con Group Pages Network. (Thanks again, Michael!). It was a wave at first, as others like myself, (comics dealers, comics creators, or others with some comic books related background), became part of the Facebook Comic Con Group Pages Network, (FBCC).  I titled our own FBCC GRUOP PAGE: Facebook Comic Con | Make It So Marketing, because I felt it would be best to promote the business name that I was using at the time.  (Tina has since expanded her book launch promotions side of the biz and is using the MISM name in reference to those endeavors).

5) Since that time there has been many changes at both Facebook and at FBCC.  Facebook has developed the 'Group Page' concept into even more of a 'Group Membership' type of page.  Where it harder to ask a 'Facebook Friend' to 'join' a Group Page, such as our own FBCC | MISM group page. Our page is currently at 2,253 members, for which I am thankful for!

6) In the meantime, Facebook has evloved their 'Fan Page' model from asking other Facebookers to no longer becoming a 'Fan', which also sounds like a 'committment', although a 'lesser' one than 'joining' a Group Page, to merely 'liking' the Fan Page.  That in itself is a boon to a Fan Page's growth!

7) All the while my own Facebook Member Page had hit the 'artificial' ceiling of 5,000 months ago!  I had to start deleting Fan Pages that I had previously been asked to 'fan' or 'like', which was relatively easy at first, because so many early adopters of 'Facebook Fan Pages' had done the obligatory 'fan page setup', and then found out how much 'work' it was to keep up!  I have already deleted dozens of Facebook Fan Pages that hadn't been updated by their owners for months!!

8) So that left me at a 'mix' of 4,750 Facebook Friends and 250 Fan Pages 'Liked'. And I couldn't add any more! My wife, Tina LoSasso, asked me to stop verbally complaining and stop commenting about it on my Facebook Pages, and to "do something about it!".  Which I've done by setting up a Facebook Fan Page last week!  There are NO limits to having 'Fans'. I can have anyone 'Like' my Fan Page, Facebook Friends or Not!

I titled it 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics', because THAT is what I do! I buy comics, seel comics, blog about comics, atten comic cons, etc., etc.! Plus, surprised as I am about it, many persons come up to me at comic cons I'm attending, saying how much they enjoy my blog, and / or thank me for the comics I've sold them. Completely on their own they come up to me! Of course I'm esier to recognize now, as I only wear the indigo colored polo shirts with 'Comic Book Collectors Blog.com' in white embroidered letters on the left breast pocket now to comic cons!  Well, that and my bald head both make me easier to recognize now, LOL!

9) So that's the background as to the Why Black Friday Comics Event Sponsored by 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics' has come about for this year of 2010!  If you're reading this blog you must be waiting for the 'Punch Line'!

10) The 'Punch Line':

So, on Friday, November 26th, I'll be sitting in front of my laptop doing the following:

a) Listing comics for sale at our own online 'LCBS', run by Tina and myself.  The Comics listed for sale at ComicBooksCircus.com will be starting at $1.00 each plus shipping. For shipping costs to your country, please see this link!

b) Giving away on an hourly basis at least 10 FREE PRIZES to those that have clicked the 'Attending' link at the left column of the 'Event Page', click here to do that! PLUS, in addition to 'virtually attending' the event, you have to click the 'Like' icon on my brand new Facebook Fan Page, here: Michael D Hamersky On Comics!

c) That's all there is to it! Jus a few careful 'clicks' and you are then 'eligible' to win 1 of at least 10 FREE PRIZES being offered at this event!

d) What FREE PRIZES you ask?  Here's the link to 1st of the Free Prizes, (Including FREE Shipping to You!).  You'll see comics & graphic novels that are cover priced from $4.95 to $19.95 (currently).

Summation:  Now You know the history and the 'why' I'm running this 2nd Annual Black Friday Event under the sponsorship of my New Facebook Fan Page:  Michael D Hamersky On Comics!

I hope you tak a look at the links above, click the 'Attending' link a the Event Page, AND click the 'Like' icon on the Fan Page, and enjoy whatever time you are able to virtually attend this speical event I'm hosting virtually!

Again, You don't have to 'be there' to participate!  There are NO 'Virtual Plice' to 'see' if you attended on that date.  Your clicking the two links, 'Attending' and 'Like' on the two different pages are ALL that are needed to be completed by you to be eligible to win!

ALL of You that do so are thanked in advance!  This is the last Big Event for the Calendar year of 2010, (as we shut down after Christmas into the New Year for vacation), and I want to thank you all by giving you an opportunity to possibly win one of those Free Prizes!

Happy Thanksgiving, Michael (and Tina!)

My Take On: Captain Fantastico #1

Today's Feature: Blog #3283

This is another one of the many publications that I picked up at the recent 2010 San Diego Comic Con International.

I was introduced to it in the Small Press Section as shown in the top left photo.

So what is this comic book (magazine sized) publication about?  Here's the promo blurb:

Captain Fantastico #1

by Ethan Wenberg, inks and tones by Paul Niemiec

Meet Captain Fantastico, superhero and superstar slayer of the Evil Lixian Horde riding a mighty wave of success on a planet Earth tainted with scandal.  The Captain strays into the ultra-kinky Bionic Bordello, a call-girl sexhouse specifically designed for lovelorn superheroes.  He returns to his wife, only to find that she's really, really angry at his horn-dog ways.  World collide and there's hell to pay as Fantastico must thwart his wife's unholy revenge!  Behold the Hi-Fi detail and underground seventies sequential sensibility -- fans of Robert Crumb and Heavy Metal magazine take note! Hot nudity, explosive gore, and not a few laughs in this first issue of an on-going series brought to you by the combined artistic talents of Ethan Wenberg and Paul Niemiec. 32 page b&w magazine, color cover.  Mature.  $5.00 US.

Okay... Sounds like a possible 'Underground comix' style comic book.  Let's look further...

Front Cover - Looks like a standard super hero fare, except that the artwork is filtered a little fuzzy(?)!

Inside front cover - Credits page.  Okay.

Splash Page - Not used as such...but when turning the page, there is a two page spread layout which definitely is a 'splash page' effect!

Interior pages - Are in black and white.  Which is fine for this genre.  The pencils and inks are well defined, and I find myself liking the artwork immediately!

The storyline is kind of strange, but I figured a few pages in that this was sort of an underground type of publication.

Which means it definitely is not for a younger readership! Although there is no warning on the front or back covers...

On the rest of the interior pages: I did not know what this publication was about, as the promo blurb I printed above wasn't in this publication, so it was a surprise to me!  However, this illustrated story fit the 'underground tag' I now know it was meant to be, and it was actually a fun read.

The next to last page was the final full page panel for this issue, with the 'To Be Continued' signage at the bottom right.

The last page had a pin-up and on the other side was a 'teaser' page for Issue #2.

The inside back cover was blank.

The Back Cover was a pin-up page with the web site address for reference.

I kind of liked this first issue.  I wish it had been shown as to what kind of genre this was somewhere on the front or back covers, or on the inside cover page that was used for a credits page.  That is the only drawback that I could see to this presentation, that it could be mistaken for a different genre, and the reader is taken aback as to what it really is...

My rating for Captain Fantastico #1 is: A VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a 10.0 comic book grading scale.

Again, I want to point out that this publication is for 'mature readers'!

Today's Feature: Blog #3282

Tina and I met Tanya Burr at the area known as 'Under The Sails Pavilion' on Preview Night of the 2010 SDCC.

Tanya showed us her first self published full sized comic book titled 'Dreds' #1, plus a couple other mini-comics that were also self published.

I've been wanting to blog about her since meeting her at the Comic-Con.

I'm taking the time now before the 2010 Year runs out... Would you believe Christmas is only 38 Days away when this blog is published?  Sheesh!

Dreds #1, which is pictured at the top right of this blog, is a 20 page black & white comic book.

The Front Cover of course gives a casual browser what the title and the character are. Good intro, and her name placement at the bottom left corner is a nice touch.

The inside front cover is the Credits Page, and acknowledgements as to who has encouraged her to that point, (printed in Tuscon, Arizona in November 2009).

The Splash page is just opposite of being a Splash Page.  Instead of a 'splash' the reader is eased into the story...

The rest of the interior pages are shown in odd shaped panels, full page layouts, and with pages with mostly text on them.

What 'ties' the story all together are the 'dreds', which are pictured all over the place on the pages... But keeping within the theme of the comic book.

The inside back cover is titled 'About the Artist', which is a good insight into Tanya's background.  It was good that she shared this with the reader.

The back cover shows just the name of her web site to see more of her work at, CowHatNinja.com, which by the way, is why she is wearing that style of hat in the top left photo of this post standing by me!

I found that that I wanted to encourage her into continuing her passion into making comics.  You see, Tanya had worked six years at her local comic book shop, (LCBS), which gave her the insight into the inner workings of the industry from a retail perspective.  Instead of following so many other persons that have worked at their LCBS, and wish they could break into comics, Tanya has taken the first steps into actually doing so!

Besides having her own domain name, Tanya also has a deviant art site at: cowhat-ninja.deviantart.com that you could look at.

To order a copy of this comic book, and possibly ask about her other works, which I do not have room here to review, you can contact her at: cowhatninja@yahoo.com

My rating for Dreds #1 is: A VERY FINE (VF) 8.0 out of a 10.0 comic book grading scale.

My thanks to Tanya Burr for showing Tina and myself her comics works thus far in her journey!
