Rust: Volume 2
Secrets of the Cell
By Royden Lepp / Archaia

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3804 -    Today's blog is on the second volume of Rust by Royden Lepp.  I've already review blogged Volume 1, as seen here in blog #3482, from August 11th of 2011.

So what is Volume 2, 'Secrets of the Cell' about?

Here's what the publisher has for the promo:

Picking up where the previous volume, Rust: Visitor in the Field, left off, after a second robot attack on the Taylor farm, Roman, Oswald, and Jet begin to seek answers to the mysteries of the past. Oswald becomes more and more suspicious of Jet’s connection to the robots, while Jet himself tries to connect with the flesh and blood family that has harbored him. Roman looks for comfort in his friendship with girl-next-door Jesse, but what he doesn’t know is that a new evil may be looming on the horizon for his family. Will they be ready when it comes?

Okay... That pretty much is it!  Seriously... The above paragraph is basically what the book covers in this second volume!

But, and let me tell you... It is the art that really captivated me once again!  The sepia toned panels in this book take me away to the story as it is happening... The layout of the pages, the insertion of the panels, whether one large or several small panels kept me once again very involved with the storyline!

The writing is simplistic, yet 'deep'...

I was really caught up with the action in the book, and the 'motion' scenes really grabbed me into the panels.

All in all, another good volume in this series by RoydenI am glad I met him at the 2011 San Diego Comic Con Internationa, (as seen to the left)l!

My grade for this book is a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale!

Here is the info on the book for ordering:

Reading level: Ages 8 and up
Hardcover: 200 pages
Publisher: Archaia Entertainment, LLC (December 25, 2012)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1936393581
ISBN-13: 978-1936393589
Product Dimensions: 6.1 x 1 x 9 inches

Here is where you can get yourself a copy online: Rust Volume 2: Secrets of the Cell, in case your local comic book shop doesn't have a copy.

I for one am looking forward to seeing Volume 3 when it comes out!

~ Michael

Bob Powell
During His Time At Marvel Comics!
1964 - 1965

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3803 -    Today's blog is on an artist that I haven't mentioned much in this Blog... Bob Powell.

Bob's history can be found at his Wikipedia entry, as seen here.

When I first read the comics he illustrated for Marvel Comics back in 1965, I didn't know about the years of artwork he had produced before.  Those artwork pages can be found at the Grand Comics Database.

Bob came to Marvel Comics when Stan Lee was looking for additional help in the expanding line of comics that Marvel started producing.

He worked on the Giant-Man feature in Tales To Astonish (as seen to the left), Daredevil, The Human Torch & The Thing in Strange Tales, (as seen at the top right), and the Incredible Hulk in Tales To Astonish.

Bob had started in the Golden Age of Comics in 1938, so he was well versed in producing comics artwork before he came to Marvel in late 1964.

Actually he had worked for Timely / Atlas Comics in the 1950s, (Marvel Comics' earlier name), and had illustrated two Sub-Mariner stories during that period, among a lot of other work.

When he came to Marvel though... He only co-plotted the stories and penciled the artwork.  His pencils were inked by others.

I remember when he came to the new Giant-Man feature in Tales To Astonish #65.  It was a good debut, with his pencils being inked by Don Heck. Bob continued penciling the Giant-Man feature, but the sales did not improve, thus leading to the Sub-Mariner taking over Giant-Man's spot in the title.

While this was going on, Bob also penciled the Human Torch & the Thing in Strange Tales, starting with issue #130, when they 'Meet the Beatles!'.   I found Bob's artwork to be fine... But he was following my favorite Dick Ayers on the strip.

Unfortunately, both of Bob's strips were replaced during the same month of publication.  I already mentioned that Giant-Man was replaced by Sub-Mariner... And then in Strange Tales, the Human Torch & the Thing were replaced by Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.!

Then, Bob was added to the Daredevil title, on issue #9, where he inked Wally Wood's pencils. He stayed on the title till issue #11, with him doing the pencils and Wood inking him.

As a last title that Bob worked on during the Marvel Age of Comics, he worked on two issues of Tales To Astonish on the Hulk strip.  But here he worked over Jack Kirby layouts with Mike Esposito inks.  Just issues #73-74, from November / December of 1965,

That was the last of the Marvel Comics that Bob worked on.  Bob went on to work for M.F. Enterprises and Havey Comics, but passed away at a young age of 51 in 1967.

There was so much going on in 1964 - 1965 for me, the Earthquake & Tidal Wave in 1964 in Alaska, etc., and comic book distribution on Kodiak Island was a little spotty to say the least.  So Bob's working at Marvel Comics for about a year was kind of a blip to me.

It is only now, that I can appreciate the stories that he illustrated at Marvel Comics more, with a better understanding of his works from the Golden to the Silver Age of Comics

~ Michael

The USS Midway Museum!
As Of February 23rd of 2013!

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3801 -    This past Saturday, my youngest son, Vinnie, and I went on the USS Midway Museum.  The US Navy Ship is now harbored in the Port of San Diego, across from the Naval Air Station on North Island.

Above... You can see Vinnie and myself in a photo that was taken when we first walked into the hangar deck of the ship...

I've blogged about being a 'Navy Brat' a few times in this Blog, and also blogged about comic books with Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines and the Coast Guard before.   Usually during a holiday, such as Veterans Day or Memorial Day.

This time I'm blogging about the fact that the ship has 66 different exhibits, and Vinnie and I took them all in, staying for six hours on Saturday!

One of the exhibits had the badges of the airplanes, of which I am showing the badge of the VF-31 (Fighting 31) the Tomcatters from 1954.  They had a Felix the Cat on their badge, as shown to the left.  Other squadrons had cartoonish figures also, but I didn't recognize any of them!

I had been on the USS Midway shortly after if first opened, and my son had gone a field trip when he was in 5th grade, so it had been a while for both of us since we had been there.

Taking just a short time for lunch at the 'Fantail Cafe', (which was pretty good, we split an order of lumpia and an order of the chili bowl), we saw all of the 66 exhibits.

What kind of amazed me was the living conditions between the enlisted men, the CPOs, and the officers.  Each had their own galley / place to eat.   The photos that I took will be shown at this special photo album on my Facebook fan page.  The enlisted men had bunks, sometimes three beds to a space, while the Admiral and the Captain had their own rooms.  But... the officers had to pay for their own food!  Something my dad, who served in the Navy, hadn't told me about before!

Vinnie and I took in the 'Island' which is the tower that rises above the flight deck.  Only twenty persons could go in a group up the four flights of stairs, so there was a small wait time for this docent led tour.  But it was worth it!  Both Vinnie and I took turns in the chairs, as you can see in the photos...

We both had a great time at this floating museum, and suggest that you take it in if you come to San Diego!  There's always the Comic-Con International that runs each Summer here in San Diego, so you can squeeze a quicker visit to the museum in before or after the convention!

Here's the link to the Facebook Fan Page for the USS Midway, so you can find the hours and days of operation..

And again, here's the link to my Facebook Fan Page's special photo album

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Exclaims That It Is...

Blog Post #3800!
After Starting On June 7th of 2006!

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3800 -    Okay... I wanted to mention that this Blog of mine has now seen 3,800 different blog posts since first starting back on June 7th of 2006!

I mentioned before that I had started it as an eBay blog, as eBay finally decided to start 'their' blog platform.  I decided within a couple of weeks to join in on the fun... And found that I won an easy $100 during their eBay blogging platform contest!

Well... That had me hooked!

I soon learned though, that while eBay allowed us to blog on their platform, that they did not want any off-eBay links.  I couldn't live with that rule, so I soon started this separate blogging platform of my own on Tripod.com.  That was on February 4th of 2007, which is now a little over six years ago.

I'm glad that I did start this separate blogging platform, because on Halloween of 2009, eBay shut down their blogging platform, leaving thousands of us without a voice.  Well, except for me and a few hundred others I guess that had started elsewhere as well!

Well, today I'm seeing the number #3800 come up in the numbering system for this post.  3800... That's a lot of blogs!

At one blog a day, every day, that would be 10.41 years worth of blogs!  And I don't blog every day!  And it's a few months short of 7 years that I've been blogging...

Anyways, I just wanted to mention this milestone today, and I'll be back again soon with a comic book topic to blog about!

And again... My Thanks to eBay for starting me off

~ Michael
