Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On...

The 2015 San Diego Comic Con / Comic-Con International!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4031 -    Okay... It is late Monday morning as I start writing this. I'm tired, from attending all four days and three nights at the 2015 San Diego Comic Con International.  Yes, really tired!

(THURSDAY) I was tired in the afternoon on Thursday.  You see... I didn't prepare for this year's convention by walking every day two to three weeks before the con started.  That would have built up my strength to handle all of the walking that I had to do for this year's con.

Yes, I won the lottery by obtaining four day passes, Thursday thru Sunday, but without Preview Night on Wednesday.  This year I sat out going downtown to see the workers set up the outside booths, etc.  Last year I went down, even though I only had Thursday and Sunday tickets. I did do Friday also, for the outside events that didn't requre a badge.  See this link for that review blog.

So, as I was saying... I attended Thursday, and started about 8:30 when I arrived at the San Diego Convention Center.   As I was fortunate enough to obtain pre-paid parking under the Convention Center, I didn't have to arrive as early as I have done in years past.  There was a little line to go get into the convention center.  Plus when arriving at the top floor, I was immediately sent to a table where I received my badge & badge holder.   This was the fastest I had ever received my badge.   Good going so far!

I then obtained my laniard and bag plus the three publications given out by Comic-Con.  I then went and attached my badge holder with the laniard, and saw several persons discarding their publications they had recived.  Quite a bit went into the trash cans lined up in the 'Under The Sails' pavilion.

So I grabbed a chair and took my program printouts and matched them against the grids printed in the quick flyer guide.  Several panels / programs were up against each other time-wise, so I knew I would have to make decisions on those as each day came up.

Having prepared my panels / programs schedule for the next few days, I decided to check out the immediate layout of the convention center.  You will see the photos from Thursday at my Facebook Fan Page's special Thursday photo album. I then proceeded to go to the panels.  I noticed that the Hall H lines were overcrowded as usual per my Facebook Friends posts, and elected NOT to go down there for the one or so programs that I had interest.  I also noted that Ballroom 20 (the second largest room), was also very busy line wise.  So I elected not to enter that line either.

I made it through the day and ended up at the 18th Annual Kung Fu Extravangaza.  I don't believe I've missed a one of those during the years it has run at Comic-Con.  It was nice to sit down, at least for a while.  I ended up at the Floyd Norman Documentary panel at 9pm, and left there for home, as I was so tired...

(FRIDAY)   I was back by 8:30 am on Friday morning.  There were several panels I wanted to see and I only missed two of them, The Lost In Space 50th Anniversary and the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards.   The reason I missed the Eisners is because I ended up at the Hyatt at 6:30 pm to see the Doomed! Documentary that was previewed.  The photo at the top left of this blog shows Marty Langford, Kat Green, and Mark Sikes.    This preview was the HIGHLIGHT of the 2015 Comic-Con for me!  I really enjoyed seeing it!  To see this more of this documentary on the Roger Corman film, The Fantastic Four, see the Doomed! Facebook Fan Page.  By the time I got out of the Hyatt, I decided not walk all the way to the other end to see the Eisners, already in progress. Besides, I was wore out!   Here is the link to my Friday photo album.

(SATURDAY)  My schedule showed a LOT of panels / programs I wanted to see.  I didn't make it to all of them.  Mainly because of panels running against each other time-wise and the walking from one end of the convention center to the other side. Whew!  I don't know how many miles I walked this Comic-Con, but it was a lot!  I ended up the night at the Sails Pavilion, where I foolishly stood in a very long line for 'food' (chips, cheese and cupcakes), and watched the Masquerade on the screen with hundreds of others doing the same thing.   I left before the show was over.  Still tired!   Here is the link to my Saturday photo album.

(SUNDAY)  The morning started at the same time I arrived the previous days of the con, at 8:30 am.  It was really nice having underground pre-paid parking this year.  That is for sure!  Anyways I took in the Annual Jack Kirby Tribute panel, haven't missed any of them since Mark started it in 1994...  I then went to the Sixty Years of Gumby panel, and ended up just walking the exhibit hall floor until my last panel of the day started at 3:30 pm, titled 'Comic-Con Talkback', with the President of Comic-Con, John Rogers.   It appears that the ADA problems still weren't fixed for this year's convention, as nine out of the first ten attendees standing in line to 'Talk Back; were about ADA issues at Hall H & Ballroom 20.   For the first time in years, I left a half hour early, as I just couldn't walk anymore, and I had not found any last minute deals to make on the floor by 3:30 pm.  Here is the link to my Sunday photo album

As to my 'comic book grade' for this year's con... I gotta admit, there was just not that much for me this year.  Maybe it was because I was out of shape for walking everywhere, but this con is just too darn spread out to see it all now.  I walked both convention center wings, plus down to the Marriott's three SDCC floors, and the Hyatt's four SDCC floors.  I didn't make it to the Hilton, the Omni, the SD Public Library or the Horton theater.  Plus I didn't make time to see any of the offsite events like I did last year.

So my 'comic book grade' for this year has to be a Fine Plus (F+) 6.5 for me. Yes, it was great seeing all those I have made friendships with over the years, and actually... I saw more friends and acquaintances than in previous years this year.  Sunday's crowds on the exhibit floor was as bad as Saturday's.   Maybe I'm just a little tired / jaded... But this year's Comic-Con just wasn't the high level of excitement for me as previous years have been.  Note:  I have been going to Comic-Con for the last straight 25 years, when in 1991 the Comic-Con moved to the then new San Diego Convention Center.   (Plus my first Comic-Con was back at the El Cortez Hotel in 1972! ) Still, I know I'll be online next year when Comic-Con puts their tickets up for sale for 2016 Comic-Con.  Hopefully I'll be able to purchase some days if not all of the con.  Till then, I'll rest up and then train for walking the 2016 Comic-Con!

Oh, I will be blogging more about items I picked up at Comic-Con here in the days to follow, and also posting more items about Comic-Con at my Facebook Fan Page

San Diego Comic-Con International 1991 - 2015: Through My Camera's Lens... 25 Years At The San Diego Convention Center!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4030 -    Okay... This is the start of Comic-Con International: San Diego week!

You may ask why so soon?   Well... Some pre-Comic-Con parties start Tuesday night this year.  I have invites to two of them.  Then Preview Night is this upcoming Wednesday night.  Plus people get into town starting today.

So I thought I'd make this special blog post as this year is the 25th Anniversary of Comic-Con moving to the San Diego Convention Center!   That was in 1991!   Whew has time flown by!

So I have already uploaded photos from my different cameras to my Facebook Fan Page over the past few years.  I'm going to post the links to each one of the different years of the Comic-Con, as shot through my different cameras.   There are more photos in recent years as I switched to digital and took more shots of course.

Here are the links:

2015

Whew!   And I have more years to upload.  But this blog is just on the Comic-Con since it moved to the San Diego Convention Center.  I go back to 1972 when I first sold as a comic book dealer at the El Cortez Hotel.

I am looking forward to this year's convention... It is getting harder and harder to make it through the lottery to get tickets.  I don't have a press pass, which only gets you in for free.  No special privileges in getting into programs, panels etc.  This may be the last Comic-Con I attend, as last year I was only able to obtain Thursday & Sunday tickets.  This year I have all four days, but missed out on getting Preview Night...

So if you can't go to this year's con, be sure to check back and see the photos I upload for the 2015 con.  If you missed earlier cons, take a look at the links above for the year(s) you missed.

(Addendum:  When inserting the links I noticed that a few of the photo albums don't have the photos I previously uploaded.  When I get a chance, I'll see about re-uploading them. Plus I have more photos that have to be scanned & uploaded as they were not shot with a digital camera.  So this is an ongoing proccess for me to do.)

The Art of San Diego Comic-Con International Exhibit!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4029 -    This past Saturday I drove down to the San Diego Public Library to check out the special exhibit on the 9th floor.

That exhibit is titled:  'The Art of San Diego Comic-Con International'.  It is running from June 20th to August 30th, so there should be enough time for you to check it out also.

The exhibit has banner art,  cover art illustrations, and interior pages artwork. The art covers the 45 year history of the San Diego Comic Con.

The whole exhibit should take you about an hour to check it all out, as this is an exhibit, and does not go in depth (in my opinion) on what the Comic-Con International should have in its own archives.   What is shown at the exhibit is just a very small sample of the 45 years of artwork.

As a preview before going... You can check out the 13 minute video I shot at my YouTube Channel, or if you can't make it, the video does cover almost the full exhibited items presented.

You can also check out the photos taken at my Facebook Fan Page special album, which you can see at a more leisurely pace than the video.

For those of you attending the Comic-Con next week, there are a few programs that are being presented at the San Diego Public Library, also on the 9th floor, next to this exhibit hall.

For those of you that haven't been to Comic-Con before, this would be a good introduction to the history of the convention, as presented in an artwork format.

Again, figure about an hour to see the whole exhibit.  For those of you driving there, the Library gives the first two hours of parking for free.  Just remember to validate your ticket on the first floor of the Library!

Oh... Here is the hours / schedule for the exhibit:

Regular gallery hours (June 20–July 7, July 13–August 30): Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 12:00–5:00; Thursday: 2:00–7:00; Saturday and Sunday: 12:00–4:00.

Extended hours during Comic-Con: Wednesday & Thursday (July 8 & 9): 10:00–7:00; Friday, Saturday and Sunday (July 10–12): 12:00–6:00

Admission is free. The Gallery is located on the 9th floor of the Central Library, 330 Park Blvd., San Diego, CA 92101.

If you didn't get tickets to Comic-Con this year, there are a lot of areas in Downtown San Diego that have Comic-Con related activities that you don't need a Comic-Con badge to enter.  Be sure to add the San Diego Central Library's exhibit to that list to see without having to buy a Comic-Con ticket, which are already sold out.

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions That He Attended...

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) 2015 At Two LCBS In San Diego!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4025 -    Yesterday, Saturday May 2nd was the annual Free Comic Book Day event for the year 2015.

I have blogged about attending previous years events, such as in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and now I am blogging about the two places where my youngest son and I attended.

We drove up to Kearny Mesa where Southern California Comics is located. We were there from 9:45 am till 11:45 am.  Then we drove over to ComicKaze also off of Clairemont Mesa Drive.

While Vinny stood in line for an hour to pick up his ration of 10 Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) comics, I walked around taking photos of every booth and table, plus photos of the inside of Southern California Comics, which had expanded since last year's FCBD event.

Those photos will be shown at this link at my Facebook Fan Page.

Here is what Vinnie and I saw at Southern California Comics:

A very long line that split into two lines near the middle of the line.  There were four tables of comics in total. Two tables with 2015 FCBD comics, and two tables with older comics in case there weren't any FCBD comics to come to a total of TEN comics you could take for Free!   There were about 32 FCBD comics out of a total print run of 50 FCBD comics, so this was worth the hour wait.

Approximately seven booths of comic book artists and creators.  Those persons included Barbara Marker, Jackie Estrada, Batton Lash, and others.  Plus the two folks from Comic Relief Podcast were there!

In addition there must have been about twelve booths of toy vendors at this event.  Comic book dealers were not allowed to set up there, as this event was being sponsored by Southern California Comics after all!

Plus the band was 'Digital Lizards of Doom'.

There was a shaved ice truck there.

Plus setting up about 11:30 am there was a BBQ grill.

Photos of all of the above can been at my Facebook Page's album.

After seeing all of the above, we went inside Jamie's shop.  There were a lot of people inside checking out comic books to buy.   This year's special collection was a set of seven Amazing Fantasy #15s, which was the first appearance of Spider-Man.  Check the photo album to see.

Well... after two hours we had seen it all, and decided to go to Robert's ComicKaze, which is just a few miles away.  We arrived there at 12 noon, and found a parking spot.  It is in a strip mall, so parking on Saturday was a little tight.

We picked up our allotment of three FCBD comics very quickly, within 5 minutes, and checked out the IDW table for their comics they were giving away free.

We had a few photos taken with cosplayers, and then quickly checked out the shop which was full of persons paying for comics they had picked that weren't FCBD comics.

Since Robert was busy handling the cash register duties, we didn't stay long.

That was our 2015 FCBD event schedule for the day.   We didn't get a chance to see the new Avengers film on Saturday, as we had to go to Bingo night, but are attending a showing of it today, Sunday May 3rd.

For those of you not aware of the world wide event that took place yesterday, here are a few important links:

What is Free Comic Book Day (FCBD)?

What FCBD comic books are possibly available?

I will be listing some of the FCBD comics that I picked up in my online comic book shop, ComicBooksCircus.com, in the days to come, so be sure to check that link out.

My thanks to Jamie of Southern California Comics & Robert of ComiKaze Comics for sponsoring their FCBD events!

~Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions That Tomorrow, Saturday May 2nd Is...

Free Comic Book Day 2015!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4024 -    I wanted to remind all of you that TOMORROW, May 2nd is the annual Free Comic Book Day event for 2015.

I have blogged about attending previous years events, such as in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and now it is time to prepare where I will be tomorrow.

I'm thinking about just attending a local event, and probably just the one, as I want to see the Avengers 2 film this weekend, also probably on Saturday.

For those of you not aware of the event, or haven't taken the time to see what is available this year to pick up, here are a few important links:

What is Free Comic Book Day (FCBD)?

What FCBD comic books are possibly available?

Where I can find a FCBD in my local area?

I will probably blog again about my 2015 FCBD experiences, so check back at this blog again...
