Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions That...

She Was 'Lava'!

Blog #3855 -  I'm back from the one day Long Beach Comic Con Expo, as shown yesterday in blog #3854.

While I was there... I went through some of the comic dealers' back issues boxes, and came across a few nice items to read and / or resell.

One of the items that I saw was a copy of the 1997 'Lava' comic book that was published by Crossbreed Press.

I've blogged about this comic book before and the model that was the 'star' of the comic book.  However, those blogs go back to 2007 / 2008 in the old eBay blogging format that this Blog of mine started out in.

So I'm going to re-format that blog and add some additional info here as well.

First of all, here's the publishing & credits info:
Title                Lava: Chapter One
Authors      Max Espinoza, Ruben Gerard, Rick       Valenzuela
Editor              Judy Sofer
Illustrated by  Gabriela Mottino
Publisher        Crossbreed Press, 1997

Here's what the comic book is about:
Written by Max Espinoza. Art by Ruben Gerard and Gabriella Motino. A chronicle of a a wild beauty's fight for freedom in an ecologically ravaged future. 32 pages, B&W. Cover price $2.95.

In an apocalyptic future, the beautiful bikini-clad Lava lives a simple life in the rocky Deadlands with her lover, until the day they wander too far into the green, lush forest. Lava awakes to find her lover murdered and herself at the mercy of Deadlands slave traders.

Soon, she finds herself the slave of her evil cousin, Queen Mala. Lava is pressed into gladiatorial contests to amuse the prison guards, and eventually into vicious fights in arenas for the amusement of the aristocracy.

Her spirit unbroken, Lava must plot her escape, if she can survive constant trial by combat. Will she break free from her dank prison, and rise above her hopeless existence? And will she someday have her revenge on the cruel Queen Mala?

My memory about this comic book is that back in 1997 at the San Diego Comic Con International... My two oldest sons and I met Leah Samonte, who was there in character dress to greet all those who entered the the Small Press area.  See 2nd photo on the right.

Her booth had a polaroid camera which was to have your picture taken with Leah in character as LAVA. So of course I had my boys have their pic taken with her as shown in the top left photo of this blog.

In the early to mid 1990's 'Good Girl' and 'Bad Girl' art in comics was the latest 'Hot' Fad, and there were plenty of models that had comics books based on their adventures. Most of them were sold based on the photo covers or artwork inside.

Today, looking via Google, I see that the small press publisher just had the one comic book published.  And that Leah Samonte doesn't appear in the search engine with a mention of the comic book!  So it must have been just one fabulous 'One Hit Wonder' from 1997!  Anyways, that comic book is what I wanted to share with you from the LBCC Expo today!

Of course my sons met more than just 'Lava' at the 2007 San Diego Comic Con International!
They also met 'Super Underwear Man' and his comic book!  As seen in the photo above!
For more of whom they met in 1997, take a look at this special photo album at my Facebook Fan Page!
