Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents An Addendum To His Take On: Humorama A Division Of Martin Goodman's Publishing Empire!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3727 -   In blog #3709 titled: "My Take On: Humorama - A Division Of Martin Goodman's Publishing Empire", I went into the background history of that division.

(For those of you that didn't read that earlier blog post... Martin Goodman was the publisher of Timely Comics that evolved into Atlas Comics and then into Marvel Comics!)

Since that blog was published, I've been sent some sample covers of other magazines, that I will be adding to the special photo album titled: "Humora - A Division of Martin Goodman's Publishing Empire", at my Facebook Fan Page.

In the header above are a few of the front covers that will be added to the special photo album.

Unfortunately I haven't been emailed or messaged with any other additional background history on the Humorama Magazines division.

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On The Showing Of:   Trek Nation Shown at the 2012 San Diego Film Festival!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3726 -   Last night Tina LoSasso and I attended the 2012 San Diego Film Festival, and viewed 'Trek Nation'.

We drove down to San Diego, to the Reading Theater in the Gaslamp Quarter, and took in the sights of the Festival before standing in line for the viewing.

Before the showing of Trek Nation, there was a 15 minute short film from Roddenberry Entertainment.   Which if seen in a dome sized theater would be pretty cool!

The Trek Nation's promotional info stated the following:

"Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, also known as "The Great Bird of the Galaxy" passed away in 1991. His son Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, Jr. was only 17 years old. Trek Nation, is a feature-length film documenting Rod's trek across America to understand who his father was through the touchstones Gene left behind: His Friends, His Family, His Work, and His Influence. Including surprising, revelatory conversations with actors, fans, NASA personnel, entertainment-industry leaders and other prominent figures, Trek Nation is a film that explores one of life's most universal stories — the discovery of a parent."

I was a little surprised to see Rod's features change during the film.  It appeared that the film took several years to produce, as his appearance changed through the early minutes of the film.

There was a lot of interviews with those that worked with Gene during the Star Trek years, and I learned even more about the Star Trek Universe during the showing of this film. 

Yes, the film was centered on Rod's trek across America, so there was quite a bit of Rod in the film.  But it was entertaining as well as educational to view Rod's journey!

Some of those interviewed are world wide famous, while others would probably only be known to Star Trek fans.   It was a good mix of interviews, along with clips of Star Trek conventions, as well as clips of Gene throughout the years.

The film didn't shy away from controversial subjects, which I thought was a good way for Rod to know his father better...

This film was pretty darn good!   I'd give it a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

If you weren't lucky enough to view at the San Diego Film Festival... You can purchase a copy on DVD at Roddenberry.com's Shop.

Last, but certainly not least... There is a Facebook Fan Page for the San Diego Film Festival, which I invite you to check out and 'Like'.   The Festival runs through today, September 20th of 2012, with the last of the 100 films that the Festival is screening!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents The Link To The Facebook Fan Page For:   The Los Angeles Comic Book Club!    aka Society for Magazine Appreciators of Super Heroes (SMASH)

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3725 -   Yesterday I received a message from Robert Gluckson via my Facebook Fan Page.

In it was the fact that he had started a Facebook Fan Page for the Los Angeles Comic Book Club, which sounded familiar to me.

After checking out the page, I realized that it was the same one that Mark Evanier had mentioned at several of his panels at the San Diego Comic Con during the past several years!

So I wanted to bring this Facebook Fan Page to your attention here!

This is the link to the page:  Los Angeles Comic Book Club.

I'm not going to pretend to know much about the history of the Club, other than it was started in 1964, and that Mark Evanier was Club President for 1967 - 1969.  Shortly after that he joined the company that ran Marvelmania, and then joined with Jack Kirby on his work for DC Comics.

There are some brief articles, links, and photos at the Facebook Fan Page on that time period of the Club.

There isn't much on the Club on the web, as I checked the major search engines.

Possibly some day, someone involved with the Club could write a brief history?

Here's an extra bit of info that Robert posted on my Facebook Fan Page: "Our club started in 1964; a chance meeting at our local comics provider, Pico Drugs, introduced us to Mark Evanier and the rest is history! The meetings now are in cyberspace and our old club building is no longer there, but the memories (and some fanzines) still remain."

Again, my thanks to Robert for bringing this Facebook Fan Page to my attention!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Is Calling All Trekkies... To Boldly Go To TREK NATION! Featured at the San Diego Film Festival on Saturday September 29th!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3724 -    Trek Nation is a documentary film about the impact of Star Trek as seen through the eyes of Gene Roddenberry's son. Directed by Scott Colthorp, the film gets star (trek?!) treatment with special viewing at the San Diego Film Festival this Saturday.

Our company is called "Make It So" Marketing, so you bet, we'll be there. We hope you join us - in uniform or not.

Fans will enjoy the many interviews in the film. Gene's son, Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry heads to Skywalker Ranch to interview George Lucas who talks about the influence Star Trek had on him - and how he attended Star Trek conventions before making Star Wars! Other interviews include cast members, fans (in costume!), J.J. Abrams (LOST, Revolution, Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy), and comic's own, Stan Lee.

Beyond celebrity interviews, the documentary focuses on the positive impact Star Trek had upon human kind. Live long and prosper!

If you're in Southern California - or have Trekkie fans in San Diego - join us for this special showing at the San Diego Film Festival in the Gaslamp section of downtown San Diego. The movie airs at 5:30 pm Saturday, September 29th and shows along with a short film by Rod, called White Room.

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On The September 23rd Planning Meeting For:

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3723 -   Once again, Vinnie and I raced down to San Diego after noontime yesterday, Sunday the 23rd, right after church services.

That's because it was time for another meeting of the planners of the San Diego Comic Fest!  This time it was held once again at Ron and Val Ontell's house in the Tierrasanta area of San Diego.

Mike Towry, founder of this brand new revival fest, held the meeting, and there were 18 of us attending it. 

I'll share just a few of the items that were covered at the meeting:

First, I took a few photos of the meeting.   My photos will be uploaded at this special photo album at my Facebook fan page.

As of this past weekend, it is less than 4 weeks away before the start of the first San Diego Comic Fest!

For those of you from out of town, you can also stay at the Town and Country Resort at our San Diego Comic Fest rate! Be sure to use that link to get the San Diego Comic Fest booking rate!

Volunteers are still needed!   Here is the new 'Volunteers' tab at the San Diego Comic Fest web site, so you can click on it.

The Artists Alley at the Comic Fest is being placed in a special room... In the Le Sommet room.  Be sure to contact the Comic Fest if you are interested in a spot!

Ed Cormier brought to our attention that Barry McGuire, ('Eve of Destruction' song and many others), will be playing at the Comic Fest!   To keep track of the Cafe Frankenstein aspect of this Comic Fest, be sure to check out the Facebook event page:  San Diego Comic Fest - Cafe Frankenstein Revival!

The upcoming article about the San Diego Comic Fest in THE READER will be out soon!

The Art Show was discussed... There will be art displayed, but no silent auction.  So this is really an 'Art Exhibit', not an 'Art Show'.  To be held in the Windsor Rose room!

The Souvenir Book from the Comic Fest... With Scott Shaw! doing the cover is on track.  Several articles to be included!

The Blood Drive is projected to be happening at the Comic Fest... Probably on Sunday!

Registration for dealers in the dealer room will be on Thursday during setup time.

Registration for the public.  The 'Ascot' room is where registration will be located, starting Friday morning.

Public hours for attendees are still being worked out.  So are the panels / programs schedules.

Disabled Services... There will be a liasion set up for this.

Phil Tippett (movie director), and Joanna Cassidy (of Blade Runner fame), are new guests that will be added to the web site this week.   Plus possibly a 'special guest' from Baltimore area... if his team doesn't make it all the way through the playoffs!

Oh... For photos that I took of the September 9th meeting and of the Town and Country Resort area that the San Diego Comic Fest will be at, please see this special photo album.
