TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3737 -   I'm a little late this morning writing this blog!

But it is after having a great three days at the first ever San Diego Comic Fest!

And I want to post a few links, and say a few words about this convention...

First, the words:

For a first time convention... This was a darn good con, IMO!

The total number of attendees, including guests, dealers, and comped panelists met the goal set by the con's Organizer, Mike Towry, as stated at the 'Feedback on Comic Fest' at the 4:15 panel on Sunday.  And it wasn't overcrowded!

The dealers room had a good flow to it, on the three days that I attended it, during different hours of the days.  Duane Dimock, the Exhibtors Coordinator set it up right!

The programs / panels that I attended, (which were many), were of quality topics and presented very well.  Thanks to Mark Stadler, Porgramming Coordinator.

The Cafe Frankenstein at the top of the Regency Tower was a fun place to eat, drink and see entertainment.  Thanks to Wendy All, Cafe Recreationsit, and Ed Cormier, Maestro of Sound.

The Art Exhibit and Artists Alley ran smoothly, thanks to Beata Csanadi, Artists Coordinator.

I saw Ray Alley, Floor Operations, all over the place the three days... Great job, Ray!

Ian Duckett, of Disabled Services had a good presence at the Comic Fest.

Rock Parker, Registration, was there at the Ascot Room every time I popped in!

Ron Ontell, Hotel Liason, did a fine job, as well as Val Ontell, Guest Liasion.

Plus others who are named on page 2 of the Program Book!

Including myself, who ran the Social Media (Facebook Fan Page).

I found the 3 day Comic Fest to be busy, yet fun.  I uploaded several photos to the Facebook Fan Page for the San Diego Comic Fest, plus have uploaded the first two days worth of photos from my camera already.

Here's the link that you should check out:

Facebook Fan Page for San Diego Comic Fest.

2nd Day Photos from San Diego Comic Fest

3rd Day Photos from San Diego Comic Fest

I'm not going to 'grade' this con with a letter grade, as I was part of the Comic Fest's staff, but I do want to say that being with the Comic Fest since April 15th of this year, when there were only 10 volunteers at the planning meetup, that it came a long way in a short amount of time!

The first blog I posted about the San Diego Comic Fest was this one from April 16th, which you can read here.

My thanks to Mike Towry, one of the San Diego Comic-Con's co-founders, for starting this Comic Fest on the 40th Anniversary of the first Comic-Con at the old El Cortez Hotel! Which was the 1st one that I personally set up as a comic book dealer!  See the below photo for me at the 1973 San Diego Comic Con at the Sheraton Hotel on Harbor Island!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

How To Draw Chiller Monsters, Werewolves, Vampires, and Zombies!

 By J. David Spurlock

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3735 -   I received this trade paperback in the mail a while back.  It's titled: 'How To Draw Chiller Monsters, Werewolves, Vampires, And Zombies'!  I figured what with Halloween coming up at the end of this month... That this would be a good time to review blog it!

What's this book about?

"From movies to comics to graphic novels, monsters and their ilk tap into the terror that lurks in the darkest regions of the human collective unconscious. Enduringly popular characters, from vampires to zombies, provide an exciting challenge and appeal to comics and animation artists. How to Draw Chiller Monsters, Werewolves, Vampires and Zombies features the artwork of comic-book artist and Hollywood monster designer Kerry Gammill, Gene Colan as well as Neal Adams, Jim Steranko, Jack Davis, David Hartman, Frank Frazetta, Basil Gogos, and Wally Wood."

Here's 'My Take' on the TPB:

Front Cover:  Definitely grabs my attention!

First Page:   A repeat of the title on a page by itself.

Next Page:  Another repeat of the title on a different color background, with a little more text.

Next Pages:  Publishing info, dedication, acknowledgements, and 'about the author'.

Then a Table of Contents...

With a following Foreword by Rod Zombie...

Then a Preface...

And finally Chapter One - titled 'Form and Structure'.

The pages are well formatted and the illustrations are superb!  The illustrations are in black & white, sepia, and color.  I am not an artist, but I know good drawing when I see it... And there are many classic examples within the pages of this book!

Chapter Two is titled 'Figure Drawing', and shows quite a few examples.

Chapter Three is 'Monsters In Your Face', and contains a lot of monsters!

Chapter Five is on Zombies, with Chapter Six on Vampires, Seven on the Dr. Frankenstein's creation, Eight on Werewolves... And so on...

After Chapter Ten there is a 'Coda', and even an 'Index' is included!

This is one properly laid out book!

There are even 'Spotlight Artist' articles, including ones on Frank Frazetta, David Hartman, Gene Colan, and other well known names!

I'm totally floored by this book!  With only 144 pages, this book covers a lot of ground, with a lot of examples!

Definitely a good book to buy for yourself or someone who is into illustrating!

My comic book grade for this book is a Near Mint, (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale!

You can purchase this book at your local book shop or online at: How to Draw Chiller Monsters, Werewolves, Vampires, and Zombies

~ Michael

My Take On: You Can Do A Graphic Novel - by Barbara Slate

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

YOU Can Do A Graphic Novel!

 By Barbara Slate

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3734 -   I received this graphic novel in the mail recently.  It's titled: 'YOU Can Do A Graphic Novel'!

What's this book about?

"Get that story out of your head and onto paper!

A guide to creating graphic novels- presented in the form of a graphic novel- from a veteran in the field!

In You Can Do a Graphic Novel, Barbara Slate guides aspiring graphic novelists through the same process she learned in her early days working for Marvel and DC Comics-a process she has simplified for the classes she teaches and for the syndicated column she writes. Written in the form of a graphic novel itself, the book covers all the components and shows readers how to:

•Find their own drawing style regardless of ability

•Create memorable characters, compelling plots and subplots, and engaging dialog

•Traverse the graphic novel business"

Here's 'My Take' on the graphic novel:

Front Cover: Pretty informative front cover!  With a promo by Stan Lee.  Yes, That Stan Lee!

First Page:  Praise for 'You Can Do A Graphic Novel', by known people.

Splash Page:  The Front Cover picture again.

Interior Pages - The credits and publishing info.  Then the Table of Contents. With a 'Thank You' couple of pages.  Plus the Foreword by Tom DeFalco, former Editor-In-Chief of Marvel Comics from 1995-2000.

Then there is 'My Story', by the author, Barbara Slate.

Then Chapter One, 'Your Story'... etc., all the way through Chapter Eleven, and then a glossary.

The Chapters that are named, do tell what each chapter is about. For Example: 'Draw, Draw, Draw',  'The Creative Process', 'The Plotline', 'Writing', 'Layout', 'Finishes', and 'The Biz'.

A nice added feature is a chapter on 'Some Students Work'.  Where you can see samples from her students' works in the past.  That is good to see in this book!

What I like about this graphic novel / book, is that it covers creating a graphic novel from the very beginning.  As this book is geared toward those in the seventh grade and up, it starts with a very basic foundation and grows.

The topics covered in the eleven chapters seem to cover all the basics and more.  It is a good read for someone who is even thinking about doing a graphic novel on their own.

This book is one that I would recommend as a gift to someone that you know is even thinking about creating a graphic novel.  Indeed it is the first one that I am recommending for purchase for this upcoming gift giving season at the end of 2012!

My comic book grade for this book is a Near Mint, (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale!.

You can check out more about this book at Barbara Slate's own web site, and even buy it there!

~ Michael
