Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On The...

The September 6th of 2013 Event at the Leo Carrillo Film Festival Season

Held At the Leo Carrillo Ranch in Carlsbad, California!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3946 -     Last Friday night, Tina and I attended the 3rd Night of the 2013 Leo Carrillo Film Festival.

Which was nice, because the whole day had been very hot by Carlsbad standards!

As mentioned in last week's review blog, the Leo Carrillo Historic Ranch is celebrating its 10th Anniversary up big with this year's Film Festival.

We saw the 1951 episode titled 'Uncle Disinherits Niece' of the Cisco Kid TV Show, followed by the 1940 feature film, 20 Mule Team. Those in attendance, (all 150 of them), seemed to enjoy both the Cisco Kid episode as well as the 1940 film!   It was a good role for Wallace Beery, but not as good of a role for Leo Carrillo though... Oh, and this was Anne Baxter's 1st film!

Also, once again, Phyllis Coates was featured in the Cicso Kid episode.  She of course was 'Lois Lane' in 26 episodes of the 1950s TV Series 'Adventures of Superman' from 1951-1953!

Another tie-in to comic books is the Cisco Kid series from Dell Comics. There are 41 issues of this series, as seen at this link.

Also... Here is the link to what else is playing this 2013 Film Festival Season.  There are only two nights left this season!

You must make a reservation in advance to be one of the 150 attendees of each Friday Night's film showing.  The cost is 'Free', and we always have great fun under the stars at this seasonal Film Festival!

~Michael

Presents His Take On...
Telikos Protocol  #2
From Vanquish Interactive

TODAY'S FEATURE IS (GUEST) BLOG #3945 -     Still catching up with my comic book reviews this week...

This comic book was also received at the recent 2013 Comic-Con International: San Diego, (aka SDCC).

At the top right is a photo of the creators holding a copy of this comic book, Telikos Protocol issue #2.

I've previously blogged about this new comic book series, starting back in May of 2013.  It was in Blog #3853, where I reviewed issue #1 that I received at the 2013 Free Comic Book Day event in Rancho Cucamonga.

So what is this series about?  Here's what the publisher says on their web site:

"Earth has been left barren by environmental collapse, humanity is on the brink of extinction, recovered alien technology the only hope left for its underground population. When the alien race returns to Earth, leaving destruction in their wake and a city in ruins, it falls to Steve Forrester, a soldier fighting to clear his name for an unspeakable crime, his partner Lily Goldstein and scientist John Santilli to try and save the human race."

What's My Take on this 2nd issue?

Front cover - Pretty cool graphics... You can see this is a sci-fi tale just from the front cover.

Inside front cover - The credits page, along with their Facebook & Twitter urls.

Splash page - Cool overhead shot.  Starts the action right off!

Interior pages -  44 pages in this issue!  The artwork is as good as the first issue.  The word balloons are minimal in usage, but the storyline flows well. There are no caption boxes. Just dialogue word balloons.  This storyline is captivating.

Inside back cover - Full page spread for issue #3 that is "coming soon".  My understanding is that it is projected to be available in October.   Possible release date is October 10th at the New York Comic Con where the publisher will have a booth.

Back cover -  Basically a full page ad on where you can follow this comic book series.

My understanding is that this series is a proposed nine issue series.  That could be a long series to keep up the interest, but the first two issues were pretty darn good!

As for my comic book grade for this issue... I'm giving it a Near Mint Minus (NM-) 9.2 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

I see issue #1 for sale at this web site.  I don't see where issue #2 is listed for sale. You might ask your LCBS for a copy to be ordered.

You can follow updates on this comic book series at their Facebook Fan Page.

My thanks to the creators for bringing this second issue to my attention at Comic-Con!

~ Michael

Presents His Take On...

SPECTRA  #5
From APS Physics

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS (GUEST) BLOG #3944 -     Catching up with my comic book reviews this week...

This comic book was received at the recent 2013 Comic-Con International: San Diego, (aka SDCC).

At the top right is a photo of Rebecca Thompson, Kerry G Johnson, and myself holding copies of this comic book series, including issue #5 of Spectra.

I've previously blogged about this comic book series, starting back in August of 2010.  It was in Blog #3214, where I reviewed issue #1 that I received at the 2010 SDCC.

So what is issue #5 about?  Here's what the publisher says on the web site:

"Follow Spectra in her next adventure. It’s wintertime, and the swim team of Tesla Junior high has gone to Pasadena, CA for their yearly winter training camp. The state championship meet is coming up, where they will face the unbeaten Edison Middle School Wizards of Menlo Park, IN. Coach Henri Toueaux will stop at nothing to secure a new trophy for his office and he doesn’t care who he leaves in his wake, including his team. Follow Spectra and her gang as they use her laser powers and their knowledge of fluid flow to stop H. Toueaux from crossing the line from motivating coach to evil villain."

As for 'My Take' on this issue...

The front & back cover is a double page spread and in foil. Pretty sharp looking!  Grabbed my attention right away!

Inside front cover - Basically used as the indicia.

Splash Page - A lot of text, but gets right to the storyline!

Interior Pages - A short story, just 12 pages, but it comes across pretty good.  The artwork is once again a fine meshing with the word balloons and storyline.

The inside back cover is 'Seven Myths About High School Pysics'. A fine text piece.

Once again I found this 'promotional' comic book to be a worthy read in this comic book series.

It comes across with a lot of good information, but not presented in a 'preachy' sort of way.  It is a smooth presentation, one that should hold a school kids attention, as well as an adults.

As for my comic book grade for this issue... I'm giving it a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

The odds are that you won't find this comic book at your local comic book shop, as it is basically a promotional piece published by APS Physics / PhysicsCentral.com.  So I'm going to list a few links that talk about the comic book.

Physics Central page on Issue #5.

Kerry G. Johnson's Facebook Fan Page.

The APS Physics Facebook Fan Page!

You could always download a copy at this link.

I'm not for sure what convention Rebecca & Kerry will be at next, but that is where I received my copy, so you could check out their convention schedule to possibly obtain a hard copy.

Presents His Take On...

Rob Hanes Adventures #14
From WCG Comics

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS (GUEST) BLOG #3943 -     Catching up with my comic book reviews this week...

The above comic book was received at the recent 2013 Comic-Con International: San Diego, (aka SDCC).

At the top right is a photo of Randy Reynaldo holding a copy of Rob Hanes Adventures #14, the latest issue in Randy's comic book series!

I've previously blogged about this series in blog #3687,  where I reviewed issue #13 that I received at the 2012 SDCC.

So what's this series & issue #14 about?  Here's what the publisher says on the web site:

"High adventure is alive and well in the 21st century! Rob Hanes Adventures is an all-ages comic-book series about a globetrotting private eye and troubleshooter that has been described as "Tintin meets Indiana Jones!"

Under the auspices of worldwide Justice International, Rob Hanes travels the world on assignment, facing adventure, intrigue and romance at every turn! Every issue is complete and self-contained, so jump in at any time!

In the (14th) issue, Rob helps precipitate the fall of a Middle East dictator by accompanying an exiled princess back into the country."

Okay... So what's 'My Take' on this issue?

Well, the front cover grabbed my attention, as 'regime change' seems to be happening more in the world at this time.

The inside front cover has a 'primer' to the series, which is very helpful if you are 'new' to this comic book series.

The splash page gets the story started off very well.  Please note that the interior pages are in black & white only.

Randy tells the story vividly, and while also being the artist, the whole story runs smoothly with the artwork.

The 24 page story ends with a good finish...

Liner Notes fills out the background of the story presented in this issue.

Hanes Briefs is the letters page...

Review: Genius, Isolated is a reprint of Randy's blog on a book on The Life and Art of Alex Toth.

The inside back cover is the Ka-Blam house ad, as Ka-Blam is the printer of this comic book.

The back cover is a good presentation of what Rob Hanes Adventures is about, if a person was to pick this comic book up at their LCBS to think about buying it.

I personally enjoyed this latest issue.  Randy has a good style in writing and illustrating.  I've liked all his issues in this series so far.   Good 'Old School' story & art that is 'done in one' issue, without having to buy a five issue spread to read a complete story arc like in many other comic books in mainstream comic book publishing.  Definitely worth the $3.99 cover price!

As for my comic book grade for this issue... I'm giving it a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

You can try your local comic book shop to see if they have this issue in... It has been published already.  Or you can check out Randy's own web site for purchase, at WCGcomics.com for direct purchase.

Be sure to 'Like' the Facebook Fan Page for WCG Comics / Rob Hanes Adventures!

~ Michael

Labor Day...

Comic Books & Comic Strips!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3942 -     Today is Labor Day... A nationally recognized holiday.

The history of this holiday is shown here, at this Wikipedia entry.

Today, a lot of US citizens don't know much about the holiday, other than it is recognized as the end of the Summer Season.

Oh, and that the NFL and the College Football Seasons start this week!

I'm stopping long enough this morning to present photos of those artists that labored through the years on comic books and comic strips.

More photos, (over 200 of them), are shown at this special photo album titled 'At The Drawing Board', at my Facebook Fan Page.

My thanks to those pictured, (and not pictured), that labored through many years to produce the comic books and comic strips that I have come to enjoy to read over the years.

I hope that you take part of today to read this blog post and to check out the many other comic book artists that are pictured in the photo album.

Happy Labor Day!
