Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On...

Early Origins of  Early Comic Book Strips - with Bob Beerbohm!

At the 2013 San Diego Comic Fest, Friday October 4th!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3973 -     Earlier this month, at the 2013 San Diego Comic Fest... There was a special panel titled: 'Early Origins of Early Comic Book Strips'.

The panel was written up in the Comic Fest program guide as follows:

12:15pm – 1:15pm: Early Origins of Early American Comic Book Strips- Early Origins of Early American Comic Strip Books Renowned comics historian Bob Beerbohm traces the origins of the comic book, from 1842 through 1933, focusing mainly on the pre-Yellow Kid period. His presentation – illustrated comics material you will see for the first time – will include the first comic book in America from 1842; the first ‘original’ home grown American comic book dating 1849; further examples of original USA comic strips and books from the 1850s tracing through to the advent of the Yellow Kid in the mid 1890s on to the explosion of full color comic books in the years before World War One when newspapers harnessed the power of comic strips to sell their product. Myriad formats competed back then as these were collected. And he will just scratch the surface during his hour-long presentation.

My youngest son, Vinnie, and I attended this panel. Bob went even further back in time than I had known about the early origins of comic books!

At the right are three photos that I took during the presentation.

This was a fine presentation by Bob, who conducted this program for the first time ever!

This is the direct link to the video on my YouTube Channel, which I encourage you to check out!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3969 -     I'm posting this blog this morning after seeing Barry Ira Geller at the 2013 San Diego Comic Fest.  Photo of Barry in the Dealers Room is shown above.

Barry also had a panel on Saturday, October 5th, which conflicted with another panel I wanted to see, so I missed Barry's.

However, after talking with him at the Dealers Room, I wanted to bring to your attention, his web site and what he is doing.

First, let me show you what his panel was about:

10:00am – 11:00am: Working with Jack Kirby, Larger than life: How Jack became my Design General and our work became the Real story behind the film Argo – Barry Ira Geller- Barry Ira Geller talks about the events that were made into the movie Argo, which won the best picture Oscar of 2012. Barry worked with Jack Kirby on designs for a science-fiction theme park based on Roger Zelazny’s Lord of Light and wrote a screenplay based on the novel. The theme park didn’t get built and the movie didn’t get made, but Jack’s designs and Barry’s script were used by the CIA as the cover story to free U.S. hostages from Iran in 1980. Barry will tell us what really happened then, including things were weren’t accurate or fully described in Argo. Panelist: Barry Ira Geller Room: Garden 1.

Like I said, I missed this panel... But have read the web site that Barry is working on.  Plus I recently viewed the film, Argo, on a DVD rental.

Here is the link to LordOfLight.com, which I believe you will be fascinated with!

Plus here is a link to the San Diego Comic Fest page on Barry's appearance!

My thanks to Barry for sharing his time with me at the 2013 San Diego Comic Fest!

~ Michael
