Above: The Front Cover to Souled #1 (Of 5) Mini-Series From Cosmic Times!
At the Top Left: The FCBD 2010 Edition of Souled!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3379:

Martin T Pierro, Publisher at Cosmic Times, sent me the 1st issue of this 5 issue mini-series just before its preview at the MegaCon in Florida this past weekend!

I've already review blogged Martin's own series,  Arthur - The Legend Continues #1,  and this is the first mini-series that he is publishing that he didn't create.

Here's the publisher's promo on this series:

"Set against the backdrop of intergalactic corporate manipulation, Souled follows the crew and passengers of the space-freighter Another Man’s Trash as they uncover a mystery on the edge of the universe that transcends even the barriers of life and death.

“Souled” is a five-issue FULL COLOR mini-series from Cosmic Times that made its premiere March 25th 2011 at MegaCon in Orlando."

So what is 'My Take' on this series?

First of all, I didn't see the Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) 2010 Edition of this comic book.  So for an intro issue to a five issue story arc... I thought that the concept shown here in issue #1, (of 5), was an interesting one.

The Splash Page used most of the space to tell us what had happened and what was happening in the future of the Universe of 'Souled'.

Which was a good intro, as the front cover showed four individuals that didn't exactly give me an idea of what this series would be about.

The 2nd page of the interior pages displayed the credits.  It wasn't until the 3rd page that the story actually started.

The storyline picked up, introducing the main character and showed the reader what the cargo of the space ship was.

The artwork was fine, however the colors at first threw me slightly 'off', until I realized that this spaceship didn't have the brighter illuminations inside that a lot of space stories present.

The 'action' sequences of the storyline picked up the pace until all too soon, at page 24, the 'To Be Continued' phrase was shown at the bottom right of the page!

The inside back page was a repost of the credits from page 2, but laid out in a different format. Plus there was the messages from the crators with thier thanks to supporting friends & family.

The back cover was a 'house ad' for 'Decisions' from CosmicTimes.net.

I found the concept presented in this 1st of 5 issues mini-series to be one I would want to follow.  The 'set-up' of the future and the main characters was done well by Christopher Faulkner.

The pencils by Zach Bassett and the inks by James Whynot meshed well with the storyline.

The colors by Kevin Zeigler was the only thing that seemed not to mesh as well for me, but I'm thinking that 'lighting' the interiors of the space ship was what threw me off. I'll wait to see how the planet's colors are shown, in the next issue, before making a final 'call' on that aspect.

All in all, I believe this is a fine start for the first mini-series published by CosmicTimes.net that was not also created by Publisher Martin T Pierro.

My review rating for this '1st Issue' is a VERY FINE PLUS  (VF+) 8.5 out of a 10.0 possible comic book grading scale.

For those of YOU that would like to see more of this concept, please check out their Facebook Group Page:  Cosmic Times.

For the web site of this series, where YOU can purchase a copy of the first issue, please see:  CosmicTimes.net

My thanks to Publisher, Martin T Pierro, for bringing this new series to my attention!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3378:

Recently, Jim Main of Main Enterprises sent in a few of his newly published periodicals for possible review in this Blog.  In the past, I've blogged about several of his publications, ranging from mini-comics to full sized magazines, as seen in this link: Main Enterprises.

So what's this strange sounding title 'ppfszt!' #29 publication all about?

Here's what the publisher has for a promo blurb:

"The first new book for 2011 is here from Main Enterprises. Issue #29 of *PPFSZT! features covers by Troy Boyle and Troy Zurel, and Scott McClung. Interior art by Brad Foster, Steve Lafler, Jeff Mason and Christopher Durant. Plus comics by Jack Bertram, Simon Mackie, Steve Shipley, Jim Main-Steve Keeter- Jack Betram, Scott McClung, Jeff Mason, George Leon, Michael Vance-Dave Farley, Brien Wayne Powell and Dan Burke! A big 56 page book with a full color wraparound cover. Just 7.00 shipping included."

Here's my thoughts on the issue, as I start at the front cover...

Gatefold cover, (front and back)... A beautifully illustrated and colored cover by Troy Boyle!

Inside front cover - by Scott McClung - A striking black & white & gray illustration.

Page 1 - The Table of Contents, which shows quite a few projects being included in this issue, pointing out that this is an 'anthology' comic book.

Pages 2 & 3 - The Editor Speaks!  Which is a good way to introduce what this series is about to someone reading an issue for the first time, like myself!  It appears that Issue #28 from a few months before, was the 'relaunch' issue for this title.  A little bit of past history was presented along with info on the some of the pages published in this issue.  The obligatory 'Next Issue' paragaraph showed a wealth of additional features for the future.

With so many features in this issue, I'm only going to hi-light some of them here that stood out personally for me.

Pages 7 - 15:  'The Acrobat and the Simian - A Step In A New Direction' - Story: Jim Main. Pencils: Steve Keeter.  Inks: Jack Bertram.  This 9 page feature had a good storyline.

Pages 17 - 21:  'I Married A Giant' - Dan Burke's Giant Gia.  A 'far-out' funny tale.  I enjoyed chuckling over it.

Pages 23 - 34:  'Flying Sharks' - by George Leon. A 12 page feature with no dialogue.  Strange, yet entertaining and amusing!

Pages 39 - 46: 'The Interview' - words & pictures by Scott McClung. Totally weird, 8 page featurette.  Yet somehow fascinating!

Pages 50 - 52:  'ppfszt! - Ed Off' - The Letters Pages.  I do miss seeing these in other comics. Glad to see this letter page section here!

Inside back cover:  The Ka-Blam! printers ad page, which Jim is using now.

This was a pretty well organized anthology comic book. As stated before in this blog of mine... Anthologies are the hardest comic book for me to review blog on, usually due to the varied materials selected by the Editors / Publishers of the anthologies.  Quite often there isn't a reason published as to why the issue was put together, or why the features were chosen for the issue.  Not here, as Jim took the time to explain, prior to the reader going forward with the features.

I enjoyed reading this issue of ppfszt! #29.

Enough so that My Review Rating for this mini-comic is a: VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) out of a possible 10.0 Comic Book Grading scale.

Retail Cover Price $5.00 ($7.00 when mailed)  Page count: 56 pages

Format: Full sized comic book, color covers, black & white interior pages

Teen Plus Readers (IMO.)

Here is the link to the order page for this anthology comic. Please see the other page links on that order page for the additional publications from Main Enterprises.

There isn't a Facebook Fan Page for Main Enterprises.  There is a Closed: Limited Public Content Facebook Group Page, which I'm not listing here.

My thanks to Jim Main for sending me the package of a few of the publications he currently has listed for sale!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3377:

Please Note:  Part 1 of this blog series on Anime Conji started prior to the con. Followed up by Part 2, which was on the 1st Day of the con, which Michael attended alone.  Part 3 was on the 2nd Day of the con, blogged by Vinnie.  Today's post is Part 4 which is a blog by Vinnie & then a 'wrap-up' by Michael.

Please Note:  This was my youngest son, Vinnie, 1st time ever at a true 'anime con'.  He's been to many comic cons, and a recent sci-fi / fantasy con, but not an anime con!

----------------------

My dad and I took in a small portion of the panel 'Getting Members for your Anime Club'. I found it interesting, as they discussed many ways to keep it fun and interactive for club members. I also found it prove useful for other kinds of clubs as well. I took some notes just in case they prove use for me.

We also viewed the 'Cosplaying to the Camera' panel. The host appeared to be well educated on the subject, and the information seemed to be beneficial to any cosplayer. It described several ways to take shots for posing, and included some terms to know for taking pictures.

We viewed the panel 'The Destruction of Tokyo'. It discussed why the Japanese love to destroy their capital city. The host was quite humorous and greatly described answers to questions related to why they destroy Tokyo. He had a well presented PowerPoint presentation that showed snapshots of some movies that all destroyed Tokyo. It shed some light to the pieces of history that are not usually covered in modern schools.

We attended a Fashion Show from 12:15 pm to 12:45 pm. It was fun as there were many interesting outfits designed by two different people. The first set was styled in the steampunk fashion, and the second was futuristic. It varied quite differently, which made it even more fun! As we were 'Press', we were allowed to get front row seating which allowed us to get great pictures. (Note:  At the top right is just one of those pics.  More at my dad's Facebook Fan Page Anime Conji Photo Album in the days to follow!)

The 'Origins of Manga' panel was hosted by Edgar Vera. He showed us a PowerPoint about the history of manga and anime. He was very educated on the subject and I felt I learned quite a bit about manga and anime. As we finished early, he also discussed about his convention he runs about manga. Everyone was interested in attending which was cool, as it shows that they want to learn more and more about manga.

For our last panel of the last day, we stopped to view a performance called Team Lift which was a variety of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), Parkour, and Freerunning. As I am interested in such subjects, and partake in a little bit of the basics of parkour and freerunning, I found it interesting for any beginners, as this was about the basics. It proved beneficial, in both showing the terms and how to execute the moves. Overall, I really enjoyed this panel, and was in fact, one of my favorites.

I know that I stated in Sunday's blog that my dad would be doing this blog, but it ended up being a co-blog. My revised grade for this Anime Conji is a Near Mint (NM), a 9.4 out of a 10.0 grade scale, after attending both the 2nd & 3rd days of the con.

~Vinnie!

--------------

Thanks Vinnie for reporting on Days 2 & 3 of the 2011 Anime Conji!

I blogged on Day 1 of this anime con, and this is my 'wrap up' section....

First, I thought that for a con that is in its 2nd year, AND moving to a larger and different location, that it was a pretty 'smooth' running con.

What went 'smooth' was the registration process, for the most part, and the logistics of being in a place that is a little 'spread out' for panels / programs / activities.  Events / Panels / Activities were spread out over the hotel property so as to not have tremendous crowds concentrated in just one area.

What was a little 'bumpy', was the 46 additional minutes that it took for the Saturday Night Masquerade to start, which was for only 15 entries.  However I did talk to another staffer from another con which held a similar event in the same room, and he pointed out that the room was not that conducive for having such an event.  So cons that are setting up there with a main event should become aware of aware of this situation and correct for it...

I found the Anime Conji staff and volunteers to be friendly and helpful, and made my own 1st 'official' attendance at a 'true' anime con a fun one. As you can see from Parts 2 & 3, my youngest son also had a 'fun time'!

Yes, a few 'bugs' need to be ironed out, such as someone giving a panel moderator the fact that there only 10 minutes left before their panel ended... And there were a few 'no-shows / cancellations' of panels on Sunday, but for the most part the panels / programs went smoothly for a 2nd time con.

I would suggest for those of YOU in the Southern California area and interested in anime / manga to 'book' next year's Anime Conji ahead of time, and save on the 'At the Door' prices.  There were 'full weekend' and 'daily' badges available.

There were some parents with younger kids at this con, but for the most part the 2011 Anime Conji 'skewed' quite a bit younger in age of attendees.  A lot of 13 -17 year olds, with a smattering of older folks.  Yet it was still a good 'family friendly' environment in presentations until the late evening programs, when there some '18+' activities.

Regarding 'grading' this Anime Conji... You'll notice that my youngest son raised his 'grade' for this con after attending the second day... From a Near Mint Minus (9.2) to a Near Mint (9.4) out of a 10.0 grading scale.

As for myself, I would give this con's 2nd year a VERY FINE PLUS (VF+) 8.5 out of a 10.0 comic book grading scale.

Here's the Facebook Event Page so YOU can check out the latest updates from the 2011 activities that attendees will be posting to!

Here's the Facebook Fan Page so YOU can become a 'Fan' and be interactive with others, plus get a heads up for the 2012 Anime Conji!

Here's the web site for Anime Conji for even more info!

My own Facebook Fan Page will be posting additional pics in the days to come, so that you that those of you that aren't able to attend, can see what happened!

Again, My Thanks to the 'Chair of the Con', Hector Reyes, for bringing this 2nd Annual Anime Conji to my attention, and to his making sure that my son and myself were made aware of the activities that were happening each day!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3376:

Please Note:  Part 1 of this blog series on Anime Conji started with Part 1. Followed up by Part 2.

Today, my youngest son, Vinnie, will be posting his 'take' on the 2nd Day of the 2011 Anime Conji, which was his 1st Day at the this con, and was actually his 1st time ever at a true 'anime con'!

BTW... You can still take in the 3rd & Final Day today, March 27th at this con! See the bottom links of this post to see the event location, programs, etc.

----------------------

Welcome to my take on Anime Conji Day 2!

This blog post will cover the general theme of the Anime Conji and some events in specific. The second day of the con was my first, as I was in school and not with my dad on Friday. When he went early on Friday morning to attend the Conji, he picked up our press passes so we were readily able to just join in on the fun today. I am composing this blog on my iPod Touch while waiting in line for the evening's masquerade. This will be one of the events described later in this blog. Well, now onto the actual read!

The general theme of this Anime Conji is exactly what you might expect - it is filled with Anime and Manga themed clothing, art, and anything else you can think of. There were many interesting costumes worn to represent characters in
certain games, shows, and movies. The art was interesting yet different to me, as I do not normally read manga publications nor watch Anime movies or shows, unlike my older brothers.

My dad and I viewed a panel about making, using, and wearing props and accessories. It talked in depth about each of those topics, and I found it quite interesting what trouble most of the cosplayers go through to make their costumes. You have to make sure any weapons are equally weighted on both ends, otherwise it will be quite uncomfortable to carry. I also found it interesting when they were talking about proportions, as it made me think of poor costumes I had seen at earlier events due to lack of equal proportioning. A good example would be if one dressed up as Sephiroth from the Final Fantasy series.  He has a sword that is longer than he is tall, so when building the sword, you must have it longer than you. A 5 foot tall man will need a 6 foot long sword, but a 6 foot tall man will need a 7 foot long sword to be proportionate to the character. It greatly matters on the proportions.

One of my favorite events of Saturday was listening to the band Secret Samurai, (top photo at right of this blog), at Charlie's Plaza in the Town and Country Resort. They are a band of surf music with Eastern influences. I found their music to be quite soothing, yet fun and thrilling. My dad and I were so impressed, we just had to buy one of their CDs. We bought their newest album, 'Zanshin', which I'm sure my Dad and I will be listening to back & forth to the Anime Conji on Sunday! They played from 12:00 pm until 1:05+ pm, and this was one of the few events we both wanted to stay the whole time that the panel/activity ran. (You can see their upcoming concert schedule here.)

My dad and I got the chance to view the game room which was great fun. They had many platforms of games to play, including XBox, PlayStation 2, Wii, and GameCube, all the way to SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System). People were also welcomed to bring any handheld games to play with others in the room. They also had tournaments for some of these games, such as the new Pokemon Black and White for Nintendo DS, SSBB (Super Smash Bros. Brawl) for Wii, and Halo Reach for XBox 360. There were many more game tournaments as well; 7 to be exact. However, they did have an entry fee of $2, but they did offer prizes to the  winners.

The panel: Writer & Artist Collaborations was presented during 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm. I found it interesting as the presenters were talking about their own experiences through their ventures of creating a webcomic. (See their site: Strawberry Scented Burnout.) They described how they created it, and were able to build it to what it is today. Afterwards, writers and artists were encouraged to exchange business cards and ideas with one another, which made it feel like what a convention really should be - a place to gather and socialize. (See 2nd photo down from the top right of this blog post for pic of the panel.)

In the Charlie's Plaza area of the resort, they held a place for cosplayers to walk around and model for pictures if asked.

There were some interesting costumes, and some that I haven't even seen or heard about. We stayed around here for awhile, as we were listening in to a band while looking at the amazing costumes worn here.

My dad and I then went to the Mochi Maids Café, where we were served a delicious dinner, complete with a dessert, (see third photo down at the top of this post). It was served to us by people dressed as maids and butlers, which almost gave it an elegant feel. My dad and I enjoyed a chicken curry, and finished with a sweet chocolate cupcake topped with tasty chocolate syrup. Boy, did we feel we had it "maid"! There was also Café entertainment which included multiple games, and a dance that was put to Japanese style music. It made the waiting, caused by the café's popularity, easier to be comforted with when waiting for our food to be served. Also, as this was their first time doing this and we were one of their practice groups essentially, they gave us the meal free of charge. However, they greatly appreciated any donations given.

The masquerade was fun to watch, and had a wide array of characters spread between the 15 entries. However, the line to enter the room that was hosting the masquerade was extremely long and led outside of the building. It was 46 minutes after it was supposed to start when everyone was finally in the room being seated.

As this had happened, the show was thus running late. It was 15 minutes after the supposed ending time when we decided to leave, as the judges had not made their final decisions yet. At this time, the half time show was just ending. Here is more information about the half time show. It was a magnificent half time show hosted by the same Mochi Maids from the Mochi Maids Café. It was fun to watch and was similar to the style of dance they performed in the Café. That was my favorite part of the Masquerade... Really! Considering I couldn't see much else, being in the back of the room and too many taller heads in front of me...!

However, even with the so-so late running masquerade... I greatly enjoyed the Anime Conji, and I am glad I got to attend. I give this convention a comic book grade of Near Mint Minus (NM-), a 9.2 out of a 10.0 grade scale.

By the way, I will not be blogging about the 3rd and last day, although I will still be attending the Conji. However, my dad will be doing a part 4 of the Conji which will be a wrap-up of the events. Be sure to look out for it tomorrow!

~Vinnie!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3375:

As stated in Blog #3365, I met Hector Reyes again at the recent ConDor XVIII, which was held at the Town & Country Resort in the Mission Valley area of San Diego.

Hector, who is the Anime Conji Chair for this year, mentioned to me that the 2nd Annual Anime Conji would be held at this same facility that ConDor was at... During the weekend of March 25th - 27th of 2011.

I made plans to attend this con all three days.  My youngest son, Vinnie, would attend the Saturday & Sunday sessions.

So yesterday, (Friday), I drove down to the 2nd Annual Anime Conji.  Unfortunately it was pouring rain in the early morning drive. Not good for the 1st day of a convention that is held at a hotel setting, where the panels & events are held either in different rooms you have to access by going outside, or events that were scheduled to be outside.  But this being my first 'official' Anime Con, I still wanted to go on the first day!

The registration & badge pick up was a little 'rough', even though it started at 10 AM and I was there by 11:30 AM.  However, the staff and volunteers made it go by pretty good for a new location that the Anime Conji moved to.  As explained in Part 1 of my blog series on this con, the first one was held at the Doubletree in Mission Valley also.

Again, the staff and volunteers made the line workable and those in line where I was, were very understanding.  If you are going today, (Saturday), or Sunday, please allow enough time to either get registered or pick up your prepaid membership badges!

Due to the length of time to pick up my badge, I missed the first part of th first panel I wanted to see, 'Convention Survival Guide'.  I found the two hosting the panel to be informative, and were friendly to their audience.

(Please Note:  This Anime Conji skews to a much younger crowd. I had mentioned in my blog on the ConDor XVIII that it skewed to an older crowd.)

After that panel, I attended the 'best panel' for me of the day.  That of 'Web Comics'.  The panel was hosted by the Chairman of the Con, Hector Reyes, and those four persons who are currently presenting 'Strawberry Scented Burnout' web comic.  Later they were joined by the creator of 'Trying Human' web comic.  There were many questions from the audience about how to break into webcomics.  So there is a lot of interest in this topic among those at Anime Conji.  This was the 2nd year of this panel. (See the middle top right photo of this blog post.)

After that I took in the 'Steam Powered Giraffe' musical group, which I watched for a short while, after it took a while to set up.

What I did enjoy was seeing Tadao Tomomatsu, actor, comedian, and jack of most trades do the impromptu 'warm up show' along with another voice actor.  Great 'warm up' show!

I next went to the Dealer Room / Artist Alley area, where I spent a long time checking out the items for sale. I'll be posting more of those pics in the 'Anime Conji 2011' photo album at my Facebook Fan Page, 'Michael D Hamersky On comics'.

Later, there was a long line to get in to the 'Swap Meet' activity upstairs.  So I checked out the AMV Contest.

The con was scheduled to run until 1:30 AM with a 'Dance of the Night', but I cut out early, because I wanted to visit my mom, who is still in the hospital, recovering from surgery.  (She is scheduled to go home later today.)

Anyways,  being my first 'official' truly anime con, I found that I had fun, with a looser schedule to meet on the first day.

Today and tomorrow, my youngest son will be with me at this con, so we'll see what he wants to see and report on!

So for those of YOU that haven't been to Anime Conji before... What's happening at this year's con?
