Michael D Hamersky On Comics Along With Many Others Was Remembering...
Richard Alf
At His Memorial Service January 12th, of 2012 In Ramona, California
---------------
Photos - (Top Photo:)  One of several photos that was presented for those attending the memorial service to see of Richard Franklin Alf.

(At The Column To The Right: 4 photos)  A photo taken during the memorial service from the inside doors of the chapel.
A photo of the casket, flowers, photos & the hat that Richard loved to wear.
One of the photos shown during the slide show presentation of Richard's life at the remembrance table, along with flyers from Richard's comic con days.
The last photo is a scan of the cartoon strip illustrated by Clayton Moore who distributed it at the memorial service. Definitely covered Richard's life as a visionary/ patron of all popular arts / entrepreneur / socialite. (You can right click the photo to see it in a larger format.)

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3582 -  The memorial service for Richard Franklin Alf was attended by approximately 100 persons, coming from at least as far North as Lake Arrowhead, as far West as Inglewood, East as far as Victorville, and South as far as Chula Vista.  This I gathered from talking with those that I met at the memorial service and later at the reception.

Richard Alf's life touched those that bought or sold from / to his mail order comic book business; those that were involved with the early start of what became the San Diego Comic Con International; those that bought and sold at his Comic Kingdom comic book shop - one of the first in San Diego, those that dealt with him in his later businesses; and those that interacted with him at the Leo parties.

So many came from all those aspects of his life, (and more), to pay their last respects to him, and several stood up at the podium or from their seats in the pews during the memorial service yesterday.

I didn't catch all of their names, and some didn't mention their connection with Richard, but all were heartfelt when stating why they were there honoring Richard.  Those included:  Mike Towry - who also read a letter from Barry Alfonso, Dave Clark - who read a letter from Greg Bear, Paul Salmon, Martha Alf (Richard's mother), Earl Bookhammer, Anthony Keith, Ed Cormier, Clayton Moore, Rich, Gloria, Greg Koudoulian, Anthony Keith, Will Clausen and others. (Pictured below L-R are:  Mike Towry, Dave Clark, Paul Salmon, Martha Afl, & Ed Cormier.)

This memorial service was one that really touched me... Although there was underlying sorrow that Richard had passed away much too soon, his life and how it touched those that attended overwhelmed the chapel.   The one song that was played and sung was beautifully performed...

A couple of hours after first starting, the memorial service was over... Yet several stayed to talk with others, before many went on to Earl & Vicky Bookhammer's residence for a reception.  Richard had elected to go with them to their home in Ramona because he knew the end was near.   Good people and their reception was well attended and so many stories about Richard and his life filled the rooms in the house during the two hours that the reception was held there.

My thanks to Earl & Vicky for their hospitality, and to those that shared their remembrances of Richard during the mid aftertoon into the evening yesterday.  Although I hadn't kept up with Richard's life until we reconnected at the 40th San Diego Comic Con International Reunion panels at the 2009 Comic-Con International, I still remember fondly selling him my comic book duplicates back in the early 1970s when he had his mail order business.

As seen by the turnout yesterday at the memorial service / reception, a LOT of people also have good memories of Richard Alf. He will be remembered for a long time to come!

For those of you not able to attend, or even if you did, but weren't able to take photos... I have a special photo album set up at my Facebook Fan Page for this memorial service / reception, which you can see by clicking the following link: Richard Alf Memorial Service January 12th 2012.  Please allow me some time to upload the photos there... As I have several that were taken at both the memorial service / reception that I would like to share there.

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Reminds You That...
Stars Of The 1988 - 1992 TV Series 'The Adventures Of Superboy' Will Be At
The Los Angeles Comic Book And Science Fiction Convention
Sunday, January 15th of 2012!
THE MOST COLLECTIBLE ITEMS at my own online comic book shop!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3581 -  I wanted to bring this upcoming one day 'Los Angeles Comic Book And Science Fiction Convention' to my blog readers attention today.

Although Tina and I won't be attending this one day show, this is a great start for the convention to begin its 35th Anniversary!  And congrats to those that are running this show!  If Tina and I were a little closer to it, we would attend more often, especially when it has a chock full of stars line up as it does this upcoming Sunday!

I just got back in last night from another ay trip to the LA area, checking in on my great uncle Howard who is in a SNIF after recovering from two surgeries.  That and the fact that I'm attending the funeral services this Thursday for one of the co-founders of the San Diego Comic Con, (Richard Alf), is filling my already busy schedule!

But I wanted to mention that for those of you already living in the Los Angeles Metro Area, that this Sunday's lineup at the LA show is one that seems to have something for everybody!

Sam J Rizzo brought this upcoming show to my attention last month, when he sent me an 'invite' to attend the show via the setting up of a Facebook event page, 'Los Angeles Comic Book and Sci Fi Show Featuring the Cast of Superboy'.   Which, BTW, if you are a Facebook user, be sure to check it out via the link!

John Haymes Newton, (1st season Clark Kent / Superboy), Tracy Roberts (Darla), James Calvert, (TJ White), and Ilya Salkind (series producer) are among those scheduled to be attending!

Plus... As seen by the flyer at the top right of this blog post, there are other TV & Film stars from shows that are probably ones you would recognize!

Including Rex Smith, who played Daredevil in the TV Movie 'Trial of the Incredible Hulk'.

Plus Ron Ely, who played Doc Savage: Man of Bronze, and Tarzan in the 1966 NBC-TV Series.

As well as Yancy Butler of Witchblade, and Robert Dix of Forbidden Planet!

For an extra 'spiff', there is a free movie t-shirt and poster from Underworld - Awakening, while supplies last... Check the website for details.

Again, this is definitely a good start for the 35th Anniversary Year of this convention.  Congrats to those involved in keeping this show continuing!

I hope that all of you that have interest in any of these TV shows or films are able to make it there on Sunday!

Special thanks again to Sam J Rizzo for bringing this upcoming one day show to my attention!

You are invited to check out Sam's Facebook Group Page for his Superboy Homepage!

Plus, Sam has his Superboy Homepage.com web site that can be found here.

(At the Top Right: First 4 photos) One of the last times I saw Elvis perform live in concert... April 25th of 1976 at the Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach, California. The last concert I saw him at was at the Anaheim Convention Center on November 30th, 1976 before he went to Las Vegas.

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3580 -  Elvis Aaron Presley was born January 8th of 1935, so today would have been his 77th Birthday!

As it was last year at this time...  That I just can't fathom, as the last time I physically saw him was in concert at the Anaheim Convention Center in  California in 1976.

I'm re-publishing a few of the photos from an earlier concert in April of 1976  at the Long Beach Convention Center at the top right of this blog post.

I also have posted the newspaper clippings from the Anaheim concert, which can be seen in this link. That was the last concert I saw Elvis at, on November 30th of 1976.

I've also posted many comic book covers that Elvis was pictured on since 1957, but the one today that I am posting here at the top left of this blog post is the first issue of 'The Elvis Presley Experience' that was published in August of 1992.  There were seven total issues in the series, which ended with issue #7 in April of 1994, as seen in this link.  Elvis items that I am selling from my collection can be found at my online comic book shop.

Man!  Elvis at 77 years of age!  I wonder what that would have been like to see...!

I want to thank all of you that stopped in here today, to help remember Elvis Presley with me.

He, and his music, will NOT be forgotten!

His Favorite Top 20 'Comic Book Movies' List!
As Of January 5th of 2012!
THE MOST COLLECTIBLE ITEMS at my own online comic book shop!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3579 -  Wednesday I was going to post a blog updating my Top 20 Favorite Comic Book Movies List, as I had been asked if I had updated my last list shown back on May 8th of 2009, as seen at this link.

The answer was no, I hadn't updated it... And I was about to update it on Wednesday morning, because I had been seeing a lot of 'Best of 2011' lists, etc., but I got really got tuned in to the Iowa Caucus Results from Tuesday evening. Thus the blog post on Wednesday was about 'Politics & Comics Books In 2012'!

Then on Thursday morning, I checked my email before finishing writing this blog, and found that Richard Alf, long time comic book dealer and San Diego Comic Con co-founder, had passed away Wednesday night.  Having re-acquainted myself with him at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con, and seeing him at the Comic-Con since then, I wanted to bring the news of his unexpected passing to those that hadn't been lucky enough to have seen him at or since the 40th Annual San Diego Comic Con in 2009. That blog can be seen here.

Well today, I'm finally planning on posting the 'List'.  And no... It's not a 'Best of List', nor a 'Highest Grossing Comic Book Movies List'.

Instead, it is 'My Top 20 Favorite Comic Book Movies List', updated to include 'comic book movies' since May of 2009 when I last did this.

Enough 'talk'... Here's the list:

.

---------------------------------------------------------------

# 1 - Captain America The First Avenger (2011) I had to raise my top comic book grade I give for comic book movies for this film after seeing it.  The best adaptation from the comic books to film that I've seen yet.  Excelsior!

# 2- Iron Man (2008) Ever since seeing the special program at the SDCC previewing the trailer and cast, I knew this would be 'right on'!  It exceeded even my expectations!

# 3 - Spider-Man 2 (2004) This movie was done right!  'Nuff Said!

# 4 - Spider-Man 1 (2002) This was a Marvel Comics movie that set the bar for me for future comic book movies!

# 5 - Superman: The Movie (1978) Seeing this DC Comic book translated to film was a highlight, and I waited many many years for Marvel Comics to get it as right as this one!

# 6 - Superman II (1981) No One can top Christopher Reeve for me as Superman! And the villains were top-notch as well!!

# 7 - Fantastic Four 1 (2005) This I waited for decades to see this Marvel Comics group hit the Big Screen.  Even after the 1994 non-released film.  I am a bit biased here, as the FF are my favorite comic book ever because of the Stan Lee - Jack Kirby original series!

# 8 - Iron Man 2 (2010) A fun movie that took off, after the obligatory origin story in the first film!

# 9 - Spider-Man 3 (2007) Maybe just a few too many characters to watch in this film, but seeing Sandman was a dream come true! BTW, Spider-Man is NOT my favorite comic book character, the Thing of the Fantastic Four is... But these 3 Spidey Films were done right!!

#10 - Thor (2011)  A really good adaptation from the comics, but the final scene at the Rainbow Bridge was just a little too 'comic booky'.

#11 - Rocketeer (1991) This movie was Fun. I don't care what the critics said about it.  The film itself made me go back and buy the rest of the Dave Stevens comics to see what I had missed!

#12 - Men In Black I (1997) I was, and still am surprised at how many mainstream people don't know this originated as a comic book!  This one is fun to watch over & over!

#13 - Men In Black II (2002)!

#14 - The Dark Knight  (2008) I am not a big fan of the 'grim n gritty' comics genre to watch over and over.  Once or twice is usually enough.  That being said, this film because of the villain, would be one that I would watch again...

#15 - Green Lantern (2011) - Was surprised how much I liked it at the theater!

#16 - X-Men: First Class  (2011) - Good story, but the comic book characters chosen were not my favorites.

#17 - Daredevil (2003) Just watched this again in 2011... Still holding up!

#18 - Fantastic Four II: Surfer (2007) Sad to see that no 3rd film for a trilogy was forthcoming, but Galactus as a 'space cloud'?  Not one of Marvel's better moments...

#19 - Catwoman (2004) Yeah, it is still in my Top 20!  I can't help but watch this when flipping TV channels if I catch it!

#20 - Batman (1966)  2011 being the 45th Anniversary of the TV Show, plus the publication of 'my' book, 'Gotham City 14 Miles', catapaulted this film into my 'Top 20' this year!

Well that's all of them now!  Out of approximately 103 different 'comic book films' that could be considered for this 'Top 20 List'.  Again, it is 'My Top 20 Favorite Comic Book Movies List'.  My choice, and yes, there are some that you may look at and shake your head...

You are welcome to post your thoughts about this blog at my Facebook Fan Page, where this blog entry will be posted.  I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts there of my list and entries you would include instead!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3578 -  I woke up this morning to see several e-mail notifications from the 'Richard Alf Get Well Page' in my inbox, just before I was starting to finish and then post today's blog that I had started last night.

I'm putting that blog aside until tomorrow, because I wanted to mention here this morning, the passing of Richard Alf last night.

Greg Koudoulian had started the Facebook group page earlier in December when Richard had first been hospitalized.  He had been 'adding' others to the page, who all wished Richard well, and shared their memories with him via the page, including myself.

Richard Alf, for those of you that don't know... Was one of those young kids that had traveled with Shelf Dorf up to Jack Kirby's house on Sunday, November 9th of 1969, as seen in the top right photo of this blog post. (Photo courtesy Shel Dorf Tribute Page.)

Richard was one of the early comic book dealers in the nation, and by a young age had a flourishing enterprize going.  Matter of fact, as I have stated here before, I sold my own comics duplicates to Richard prior to setting up at as a comics dealer myself at the 1972 San Diego Comic Con.

Richard and I talked about that at the 40th Anniversary Program of the SDCC at the 2009 Comic-Con International.  A while later, on Sunday, September 20, 2009  at "A Celebration of San Diego Comic-Con International At Mysterious Galaxy!", we had the opportunity to talk a little more.  Richard is shown sitting by Jackie Estrada in the photo to the left.  The event was the book signing of the special 'Comic-Con: 40 Years Of Artists, Writers, Fans & Friends' that was a Special Edition published for the SDCC by Chronicle Books of San Francisco.

Then, just recently at the 50th Anniversary of Comics Fandom, we met once again, as seen at first inset photo in this blog body of text.

Although my time with Richard was limited during these events, I found him to always be smiling, friendly and outgoing.  The recent outpouring of well wishes sent to Richard via the Facebook Page showed that he treated many others the same way.

Richard had been the receipient of an Inkpot Award in 1989.  I'm not sure what other 'official' recognition he received during the years, other than from those that knew him. He did receive a special award at the 50th Anniversary of Comics Fandom, as seen at the top right of this blog post. For other pictures that Richard was in, here is the link to the album of photos I have uploaded thus far.

RIP Richard, your efforts to help start what is now known as the Comic-Con International:  San Diego will be remembered, as well as your comic book store, 'Comic Kingdom', one of the first LCBS in the San Diego area (along with the Schanes Brothers' Pacific Comics LCBS.

Mike Towry has posted this on the Facebook page: "Richard passed away tonight in peace at the home of a friend and surrounded by friends. There will be a memorial service for him probably around the middle of next week in Ramona, CA, which is about thirty miles from San Diego. I'm sure the details will be posted here as they become available, but people can also check early next week with Bonham Bros & Stewart Mortuary and Cremation Service in Ramona by calling (760) 789-1678."

My condolences to his family and friends...
