TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3960 -     I wanted to mention that voting in the 2013 Shel Dorf Awards is going on right now...

The winners will be announced at the Detroit Fanfare on October 25th of 2013.

And No... I wasn't nominated as one of the five Comic Bloggers of the Year this year to vote for...!

However, I'm pleased to have been nominated in 2011 & 2012!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions That...   The Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Show Was Predicted Back in 1965!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS (GUEST) BLOG #3954 -     I was looking at the upcoming TV Season Schedule, and made sure that we would be watching Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this year.

I've already blogged about the new show, back on May 20th of this year in blog #3863, so yes, I'm looking forward to viewing it on the small screen!

However, looking over my collection of comics, I found in Daredevil #11 cover dated December of 1965, a reference to the same TV Show!

See the above scan to the top right, and at the bottom left of the panel...

It seems that I missed seeing the show back in 1965!

Only Stan Lee, (writer), Bob Powell, (penciler), Wally Wood, (inker), and Sam Rosen (letterer), knew about this TV Show!  Oh, and of course the readers of Daredevil #11!

Now, this year of 2013... We finally get to see it!

Be sure to watch it, as the TV show premieres September 24th at 8PM on ABC!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Looks At...   Today In History  September 17th of 1862!     TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3952 -     Today's blog is on the Battle of Antietam, which was fought on this date back in 1862.    The battle was the bloodiest one day battle in American history.  Over 23,000 casualities total on both sides, out of 100,000 soldiers participating.   More on this at the History Channel, and in the Volume 3 of Epic Battles of the Civil War comic book.  President Abraham Lincoln with Major General George McClellan shortly after the Battle of Antietam!    The Front & Back Covers of Epic Battles of the Civil War: Volume 3 - Antietam!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Looks At... Today In History  September 13th of 1814!   TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3950 -     Here is a bit of history and Comic Book history as well:   On this date, back in 1814, Francis Scott Key penned the poem of what would become our national anthem.   Originally it was called 'The Defence of Fort McHenry', but music was added to it and in 1931 the 'Star Spangled Banner' was adopted.   In the comic book 'Stamp Comics' issue #7 of October of 1952, a four page story was written titled: 'Francis Scott Key and the Star-Spangled Banner'.  The art was illustrated by Roy G Krenkel.   The front cover to the comic book issue and the front of the stamp published in 1948 are shown to the right.   So now you know what happened on this date... Back in 1814!    ~Michael Stamp Comics #7 From 1952!    Francis Scott Key US Postage Stamp 1948!   NOTE: I used to be an avid stamp collector, as well as a comic book collector. I still have my US & world-wide stamp collections!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions That...    Leo Carrillo Passed Away 52 Years Ago Today...   September 10th of 1961     TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3947 -       Yesterday I blogged about the fact that Tina and I attended the 3rd Night of the 2013 Leo Carrillo Film Festival, (Blog #3946).   As mentioned in Blog #3885, the Leo Carrillo Historic Ranch is celebrating its 10th Anniversary with this year's Film Festival.   The reason I blog about the Leo Carrillo Ranch, and the Leo Carrillo Film Festival is that there is a tie-in with comic books.   In the USA there are the Cisco Kid Comic Books from Dell Comics. There are 41 issues of this series, as seen at this link.   Leo is not 'pictured' on the front cover, as Duncan Renaldo, who played the Cisco Kid is, but his likeness is illustrated on several of the comic books.   I find the Leo Carrillo Historic Ranch to be a great place to visit, whether taking guests there, or just walking the grounds to get in some excercise.   Leo picked a perfect spot to purchase land, and improve the buildings that were there.   I find his choice in the layout of the ranch to be a fascinating one, along with incorporating the stream that runs by on both sides of his casa.   Tina and I enjoy attending the Film Festival, and with over 90 films to his credit, there are several more that we haven't seen!   Leo and his wife, Edith nee Shakespeare, stayed at the ranch, where Edith painted and Leo ranched. They also entertained their Hollywood friends, including Clark Gable & Carole Lombard, who honeymooned at the Ranch!   If you come to San Diego, be sure to check out the Ranch for yourself!  See this link from the City of Carlsbad for more info. Plus be sure to check out the Friends of Carrillo Ranch web site!   Remembering Leo Carrillo today...   ~Michael Although Leo Carrillo Starred In Over 90 Films... It Was His Role As 'Pancho' In The TV Show, The Cisco Kid, That He Is Best Known For!    Leo Enjoyed The Land So Much, That He Purchased A Ranch In The Town Of Carlsbad, California, Which I Am Only 5 Minutes Away From!   Although The Cisco Kid Comic Book Ran For 41 Issues, No Photo of Leo Carrillo As 'Pancho' Was Used.  Illustrations Were Used Instead!
