Amber Self, Co-Owner of Sky High Comics

I saw the above poster on a Facebook Friend's Wall Comment ...  Where it had a link to an event that was being hosted at the closest Local Comic Book Shop (LCBS) to us here in North San Diego County.

We had already made plans for the day, going up to Temecula Wine Country to pick up Wine Club Shipment with friends.  Howeve, Tina and I couldn't help but go back out last night because this was going to be Sky High's first show since the new owners, Amber and Dave Self, took over the store!

The following is what the Facebook Event Page showed as what was being featured:

Come out and enjoy a summer evening with Friends, Art, Music and Comics...

ARTISTS: Ron Lemen, Vanessa Lemen, Soudabeh Memarzad, Keith Phillips, Spencer Tiscareno, Jeanette Vieira, Arron Willhite & Artists from Studio 2nd Street.

MUSIC: Freestyle and radical Sounds of Bushwalla
PLUS+ Aaron Jennings

Comics, action figures, art works, and trading card games from Sky High Comics

PLUS!! Magic Bars & Goodies from Elizabethan Desserts

JUST ADDED...
Appearance by Poet Leila Farjami
and art by Beraglass - Brian S. Canfield - Studio Manager

AND... The making of a Comic book with Erik Hendrix! See art and writing in progress. Wow!

Click Here To See Our Newly Listed Listings of HoRRoR and MoNSTer Comics, Graphic Novels, Promo Comics and other Pop Culture items listed for sale!  Well, quite honestly, it was the fact that Erik Hendrix, who is one of the 20 contestants in the Small Press Idol Round 3 with the 'FACTION' entry that I've blogged about before, that induced me to want to attend!   Well, that and the desserts by Elizabethan Desserts, LOL!  Tina took a few photos of the event, the first one of myself meeting Erik for the first time, (above).

Click Here To See Our Newly Listed Listings of SCI-FI and Sword and Sorcery Comics, Graphic Novels, Promo Comics and other Pop Culture items listed for sale!  Of course I had to see 'in person' several of the pages from the 'FACTION' project that Erik had brought out to exhibit to those attending the event.  Erik had also brought out other pages, character bios and sketches that he is currently bringing to fruition for other projects.   Erik has a lot of ideas, several of which he shared with me that are not ready to blog about here. He is also broadening his publishing base by having other artists join him in these other projects.

Click Here To See Our Newly Listed Listings of TV and Movie Comics, Graphic Novels, Promo Comics and other Pop Culture items listed for sale!  Tina and I also met Amanda Hendrix at the event, who is assisting her husband both editorially and in marketing.  It was great meeting both of them last night at this event!

For those of you that are not familar with Erik's 'FACTION' project that is in the Top 3 currently of Round 3 of the Small Press Idol contest, I invite you to check it out by clicking on the following link to the FACTION's Fan page: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=55926073990

And then for the most important process.  To vote for Erik Hendrix's FACTION in the Small Press Idol contest, you can do so by following the easy steps below:

1. Sign up - http://www.dimestoreproductions.com/signup.php
2. Sign in - http://www.dimestoreproductions.com/.
3. Go to - http://www.dimestoreproductions.com/forum-t46557.html
4. Click "Yes - As a fellow creator I support this" or "Yes - I am a fan and want to read more".
5. Click "Submit"
That's how easy it is!

Now that you've done it once... You can Vote Daily up through June 7th, 2009!  AND You can vote for more than One contestant besides!  So you should look at what else there is running in this Round 3... However, please Note: Only 3 of the 20 entries are going to make it to Round 4.  Heck this is almost as exciting as 'American Idol'!

Now, I need to say this... Erik's 'FACTION' project is one of the entries I have followed since first finding out about Small Press Idol 2009 (SPI).  His project is one of several that I have voted for many times during the first 3 Rounds of SPI.

After meeting Erik last night and seeing for myself in person that his vision and enthusiasm as a writer for this project is genuine and contagious, I am endorsing his project as One of the Three entries that should make it to Round 4 of the Small Press Idol 2009!

Best of Luck Erik!

NOTE:  More on a couple of other comics related topics that we came across last night in the days to come.  We also met two artists whose creations being exhibited at this event merit mention here in our Blog, but I am waiting for artist bios to be emailed to me first...

PLUS: Our Thanks to Amber and Dave Self, who presented this Art - Music - Comics Show at their LCBS in San Marcos, California.  It was their first show, and it was so much fun that Tina and I were there for almost the whole evening that it ran!   Their LCBS was Not included in my Blog on Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) in the San Diego Metro Area, because they did not participate in this year's event.  Their LCBS is located at:

Location: Sky High Comics
Street: 172 South Rancho Santa Fe Road
City/Town: San Marcos, CA

Witch Hunter!

Click Here To See Our Newly Listed Listings of Comics, Graphic Novels, Promo Comics and other Pop Culture items listed for sale!

Vincent Ferrante

Creator of Witch Hunter Comic Book

And Publisher Of Monarch Comics

I received a preview copy of Witch Hunter #2 ...  In the best shipping packaging ever! Great care was taken in placing the comic in a bag and board and sandwiched between two rigid cardboard inserts. Additionally the comic came with a well written business letter introducing the comic, yet also personalized to me from Vincent Ferrante, Publisher of Monarch Comics.  A Great Presentation for this, the 2nd issues of the Witch Hunter series from Monarch Comics!  Talk about First Impressions!

Besides being the Publisher of Monarch Comics, Vincent is also the writer / creator of Witch Hunter.  Which I didn't find out until I stopped looking at the great front cover by Frank Brunner.... Yes, THAT Frank Brunner!

On the inside front cover, there was a brief paragraph of what had happened in the story thus far.  There was also another paragraph of intro on the splash page.  The art / inks / colors in the first story were fine and meshed together, but I found the story itself was a little hard to follow at first, probably because of missing reading the first issue...

Upon further research into this Witch Hunter series, I found that the idea was first developed in 1976 by Vincent, who then developed a Witch Hunter Bible while in college as part of his writing curriculum.  Vincent then ran some Witch Hunter Adventures in Comic Culture Magazine in 1993, and a year later published his first Witch Hunter Comic.  He then went to England for a while.  When Vincent came back from England, he started Monarch Comics in 2001.

Finding out the above information may be the reason why it was harder for me to jump right into the issue #2 itself.   Starting with only issue #2, without knowing who the key players were and the backdrop, is probably why it took me a few pages to settle in reading the issue I held in my hands.  Once settling in however, I enjoyed reading the story.

This was the only flaw I could see as a new reader to the series.  The great cover to issue #2 by Frank Brunner would induce me to pick up the comic, the interior art / colors would make me flip through the pages while standing at my favorite LCBS; yet it is as much of the story that I could digest quickly at that point, that would make me either purchase the whole publication to take home and read or not.

After the feature, there was a backup story, a 5 pager, which was excellent!  It set up a great backstory for the main character, and made me want to read more!  The art in this story was by Jim Webb, and it flowed well with the story written by Vincent Ferrante.

The Back Cover, inside and out, had 2 pinups well drawn by Alex Williamson and Dave Ryan.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this issue, and would look forward to continuing reading this series.

Details on this Witch Hunter #2 are as follows:

Writer: Vincent Ferrante
Artist: Scott W & Victor Dominicis (lead story) Jim Webb (backup story)
Colors: Alzir Alvez de Pontes Junior

Cover Art: Frank Brunner
Creator: Vincent Ferrante
Editor: Lisa Hager

Standard Comic
Color cover and interior pages
Page Count: 32 plus covers
$2.99 Cover Priced USA

Storyline:  "People don't believe in magic anymore, so that magic is being stolen from them...secretly. Forged in the flames of the Salem witch hunts, Witch Hunter is resurrected 300 years later at the dawn of a new world order to fight the powers that be which hide in  the shadows and point the finger of blame at everyone but themselves while stealing all the magic for themselves. He hunts the hunters. Opposing the darkness without being darkened by it, Witch Hunter journeys through this thrill-packed, ongoing adventure and delivers a hip, cutting edge tale laced with irreverence and lots of action. Witch hunts aren't about hunting witches. They never were."

Metro + Med  The Hospital For Superheroes!

Michael Hutchison - Creator of Metro + Med Comic Book

I have been blogging for a few months about Small Press Idol (SPI)...  Which I just found out about this Season.  However this is not the first year that it has been running.

I recently became Facebook Friends with Michael Hutchison, who it turns out, won the SPI in 2004 with his collaborators.

Intrigued, I corresponded further with him, as to how it happened, what happened, and what has occurred since winning the SPI in 2004.

Michael was gracious enough to send me 'The Special Edition' of Metro+Med for review purposes, along with another publication of his.  For this blog post I'll only be commenting on the Special Edition - Metro + Med #1.

After winning the SPI in 2004, Metro Med Summer Special #0 was published in time for Wizard World Chicago 2005 by Shooting Star Comics.

The story was additionally published in Mysterious Visions #1 (MVA) by Dimestore Productions.  In the summer of 2008, The Special Edition #1 was printed through Ka-Blam.  That special issue was introduced at Wizard World last summer. That was followed up at FallCon with a new backdrop display and a video trailer running on a screen!

Phil Meadows, the artist for this project, has since moved on from comics, so Hutchison has been looking for a new collaborator to continue the project.

Here are my thoughts on The Special Edition:

I am now watching Round 3 of the SPI 2009 contest.  For each project that has made it that far, I have seen the concept page with proposal in Round 1.  Round 2 had additional character bios and sketches. Round 3 has three continous pages submitted, out of the required 8 pages for those that make it to Round 4.

I can see this process in The Special Edition of Metro Med.  Which is good for a new reader, as the story is a little involved at the beginning.   Having the character sketches and the character bios is helpful in figuring out who the players are in this comic.  Especially when the two main stories are 8 pages each and a lot is happening in each story with characters you wouldn't know right off.

There is also a section of 'Footnotes, Annotations and Musings' at the end, which is very helpful based on thoughts by the creator.  The Special Edition is a good solid beginning for launching a series based on this premise.

Added in this Special Edition was another 8 page story with different characters and a different storyline.  Melvin and Marvin Middler Time Meddlers  in 'No Great Shakes'.  Being a fan of time travel stories both in Comics, TV and Films, this was of special interest to me.  I enjoyed this previously Out Of Print Short Story by the same writer and artist.

Details on this Special Edition #1 are as follows:

Writer: Michael Hutchison
Artist: Phil Meadows
Additional Contributors: Roz Terrill, Erik Burnham, Robert Bavington, Anthony Hary, Joel Moen and R.B. Propst

Standard Comic
Black & White
Page Count: 36
$3.50 Cover Priced USA

This issue reprints content from the Metro Med #0 Ashcan Edition and the out of print Shooting Star Comics Anthology #4, with new additional material. Two Metro Med stories, plus character information, annotations and as a special bonus, "Melvin and Marvin Middler, Time Meddlers" about two time-traveling British brothers who try to make their fortunes while dodging the time police.

Metro Med is an urban hospital at the hub of three cities overflowing with metahuman activity. While still catering to the general populace, the Metro Med staff must deal with the dangers of treating superheroes (and villains), anticipating the bizarre medical complications and protecting their charges' privacy from spying eyes. The dramas play out in the wild city streets of the Tri-Metro...and in the secret stories of the doctors, nurses and staff of Metro Med.

My Favorite Comic Book Movies...

Topic: Comic Book Movies

My Favorite Comic Book Movies

As Of May 28th, 2009!

I recently blogged about my thoughts on a couple of films...  Which weren't comic book movies per se.   Those were the latest Terminator film, and the Star Trek film.  Both of these franchises have been transformed into comic books, but I don't classify them as 'comic book' movies.

It was interesting to see the comments on both versions of my blog, in both the eBay and our own domain named formats.   Which reminded me that a lot of new readers of this Blog aren't aware of my 'tastes' in films.

Additionally I was just reading the FCBD 2009 'Hot Lists' edition published by Wizard / Anime Insider / ToyFare, which had its' own '50 Best Comic Book Movies Of All Time' listing.   Which made me feel I should update my earlier blogs as to what films I enjoy in this genre.

So for the purpose of this list, I will be considering a 'comic book movie' as any feature length film where the story and/or characters originally appeared in a "comic book".  To me a "comic book"  would include comics, comic books, comic strips, graphic novels, or manga.

So unfortunately I won't be including films with comic book themes that didn't originate in the world of comics.   Those would The Incredibles (which would be in my Top 10 for sure!), and Hancock. Although again, each has had a comic book treatment afterwards.

Also other properties that originated elsewhere as Toys or Sci-Fi TV Shows,  but have since become comic books, such as Transformers are not included! Also, films like 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow', altho looking like a comic book movie is not one.

One last point... This is MY List of My Favorite Comic Book Movies.  I realize that some of the choices will be on others 'Worst' Comic Book Movies Lists, or even on the 'Best' or 'Top' Lists.  For example I believe 'Watchmen' is one of the 'Best' ever filmed comic book movies, but I don't believe I would watch that as much as others that rank higher on my list.

The following are those films that I would stop channel surfing and pick up part way through the movie to watch again.  They are the ones I would most likely pull out of my DVD or VHS collection to watch again.  These are my faves, and as readers to this Blog, I should inform you of my tastes as a background.  This would guide you as to what I think of new films that have been released that I have recently reviewed, and of course more to follow.

Click Here To See Our listing of IRON MAN comics and graphic novels!  # 1 - Iron Man (2008) Ever since seeing the special program at the SDCC previewing the trailer and cast, I knew this would be 'right on'!  It exceeded even my expectations!

# 2 - Spider-Man 2 (2004) This movie was done right!  'Nuff Said!

# 3 - Superman II (1981) No One can top Christopher Reeve for me as Superman!  And the villains were top-notch as well!

# 4 - Spider-Man 1 (2002) This was a Marvel Comics movie that set the bar for me for future comic book movies!

Click Here To See Our Listings of SPIDER-MAN Comics, Graphic Novels, Promo Comics and other Pop Culture items listed for sale!  # 5 - Spider-Man 3 (2007) Maybe just a few too many characters to watch in this film, but seeing Sandman was a dream come true!  BTW, Spider-Man is NOT my favorite comic book character, the Thing of the Fantastic Four is... But these 3 Spidey Films were done right!

# 6 - Fantastic Four 1 (2005) This I waited for decades to see this Marvel Comics group hit the Big Screen.  Even after the 1994 non-released film.  I am a bit biased here, as the FF are my favorite comic book ever because of the Stan Lee - Jack Kirby original series!

# 7 - Superman: The Movie (1978) Seeing this DC Comic book translated to film was a highlight, and I waited many many years for Marvel Comics to get it as right as this one!

# 8 - Rocketeer (1991) This movie was Fun. I don't care what the critics said about it.  The film itself made me go back and buy the rest of the Dave Stevens comics to see what I had missed!

# 9 - Men In Black I (1997) I was, and still am surprised at how many mainstream people don't know this originated as a comic book!  This one is fun to watch over & over!

Click Here To See Our Listings of BATMAN Comics, Graphic Novels, Promo Comics and other Pop Culture items listed for sale!  #10 - The Dark Knight  (2008) I am not a big fan of the 'grim n gritty' comics genre to watch over and over.  Once or twice is usually enough.  That being said, this film because of the villain, would be one that I would watch again...

#11 - Men In Black II (2002)

#12 - The Mask (2005)

#13 - Watchmen (2009)

#14 - X-Men 3: Last Stand (2006)

#15 - Daredevil (2003)

#16 - Fantastic Four II: Surfer (2007)

#17 - Ghost Rider (2007)

#18 - Catwoman (2004)

#19 - Barb Wire (1996)

#20 - The Spirit (2008)

The above 20 listings were chosen from over 75 different 'comic book movies'  I have viewed over the years.  There were a lot to choose from.  Some I would never watch again, those being 'Popeye' from 1980, and 'Steel' from 1997.

Again, these are my current favorites and reflect what I would watch over and over if given a chance, or stranded on a desert island...
