This past Sunday I blogged that the creators of FACTION, the comic book that won the 2009 Small Press Idol Contest (SPI), would be signing the special Zero Issue this Wednesday the 11th of November, at a Local Comic Book Shop (LCBS) in San Diego.

For those of you that weren't able to attend this special signing yesterday, I've published a few photos from the signing above.

Of course the 'hi-lite' of the signing for most persons there was seeing the actual copy of the comic book, which had taken months to put together, as it progressed from its' beginning stages in Round 1 of SPI to finally being the winner in Round 4!

Those store customers that were there basically for 'New Comics Day' at SoCal Comics also had the pleasure of meeting the FACTION creators, Erik & Arnie, who were sitting right next to the 'new comics racks' at their booth.  (Shown in the top right photo.)

I have stated before that Tina and I first met Erik W and his wife Amanda Hendrix back on the night of May 30th at Sky High Comic's "A Night Of Art - Music - Comics In San Marcos California!"  (click here for that post).

However, I had not yet met Arnie Gordon, the artist for this #0 issue until yesterday.  Arnie was a great guy to meet, who although a 'quiet' guy at the signing event, lets his pencils speak for him!  Glad to have finally met you Arnie... looking forward to rest of the story arc from you and Erik!

In the middle photo of the photos published at the top right of this post is SoCal's owner, Jamie Newbold.  He and I discussed the current status of 'comics sales' in the San Diego area, of which I will be sharing some of that with you in the days to come. I had previously mentioned Jamie's LCBS in my review of the 2009 Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) Event As Seen in the San Diego Metro Area: (Click for blog post.)

Store Location:  Southern California Comics
Street Address:  8280 Clairemont Mesa Bl. #124
City/Town:         San Diego, CA

For more info you can check his store's web site at:  http://www.socalcomics.com/.

Jamie's LCBS is where we get the majority of our comics bags and boards supplies for shipping our own online sales, even though they are approximately 30 miles away from us here in the city of Carlsbad, located in North San Diego County.

The third photo at the top right is just one of the dozen and half  persons that bought a copy of FACTION while I was there during the signing for a few hours of the event.  Thanks John for the conversation!  Also to Mike who is both a local teacher and a SDCC volunteer in the GRT department of that great Comic Con. Looking forward to perhaps seeing you again at the 2010 Comic Con International: San Diego!

Plus, Thanks again to Erik for sending me an invite to this signing! I was pleased to be able to attend this mid-week event!

Above:  Robert Roach at the 2009 LBCC holding issues #1 and 4 of his four issue mini-series at The Antidote Trust booth!

To the Left: Closer look at the Front Cover of Issue #1!

Earlier this year I blogged about a different mini-series that Robert Roach created, titled 'The Roach', which was Not an autobiographical set....

However, as I said in that blog, (click here for review), I thought it the best mini-series I had read in a long time!

So when I met Robert again, this time at the recent 2009 Long Beach Comic Con, he presented me with a full set of his earlier mini-series 'Menthu' to read and possibly review here.

Robert mentioned, (possibly as a warning?), that it was not at all like 'The Roach'.  And it wasn't.  So what was it about?

Here's the PR for issue #1:  Rashan N'Shanga's world has just turned upside-down. Overnight, he's become an Egyptian sungod and he now has to set out on a quest to figure out exactly what being a"god" means. Rashan's sojourn will span across our world and into Egyptian mythology's netherworld.

Here's the PR for issue #2:  Rashan's situation goes from bad to worse as he appears in the TaDjesart, ancient Egypt's "Underworld," on the unholy river, the Tuat. But if he thinks sharing unknown time in a boat with a rotting corpse for an oarman is "worse," then the "worst" is yet to come.

Here' the PR for issue #3:  In part 3 of 4, Rashan N’Shanga has finally been reunited with his father, Anhur, ancient Egypt’s God of War. After being "snack food" for a fire-breathing snake—not to mention being fished out of the river, half-dead—Rashan’s ready to relax & enjoy this reunion. But the young immortal has more hard facts of his origin to learn. And Set has NO intentions of allowing his 2 mortal enemies to enjoy a "happy ending".

I'm not going to post the PR for issue #4 here, as I don't like to post 'spoilers warnings' for the endings of mini-series if I can help it.  And with this mini-series already published, why give away the ending?

Very briefly, let me state Robert's publishing history of this 'Menthu' series.  Robert first started coming up with this mini-series back in 1991 when he listened to the CD titled "The Seven Souls" by an electic, ever changing group called 'Material'. The CD had seven songs, of which five of them contained narration by William S. Burroughs about Egyptian mythology.

Robert says "A chord deep in my imagination was struck when I heard the CD".  In 1992 Robert, while driving up the Pacific Coast Highway to Monterey, CA, came up with the story outline in his head.  However he didn't feel that he could do justice to the story until he improved his storytelling abilities.  By 1996 he was ready to start with the actual story.   In 1997 he published the first issue of Menthu, and then the second issue.  However, distribution problems kept him from finishing the series at that time.

In 2004 Robert decided to restart the mini-series, and had the art redone as well as the coloring and other production values.  This time he had the whole four issues of the mini-series printed in advance, so there would be No distribution issues.

Those involved with the mini-series production were: Robert Roach, Larry Welch, Bryan Taylor, Tony Stewart, and Yumi Roach.

Okay... so much for the PR and the history of this mini-series.  What did I think of this mini-series of Robert's?

Well, I found the story arc itself to be well paced, not rushed and most importantly not stretched out to fill the four issue story arc.

The dialogue of the characters were fitting and what I would expect those beings to possibly talk like.  The research behind this story arc had to be a project in itself, what with the variations of the stories from ancient Egypt, and with the different names of the gods used by other conquering nations since then to refer to the Egyptian gods.

The art is in a style that adds distinction to the panels, but it is the coloring of this series that really brings out the flavor of the artwork to me.  Additionally the paper used for the cover and the interior pages really makes the total package jump out at me!

The lettering is something a lot of readers don't really notice unless it bothers them.  Here the lettering fits each scene and each character without interferring with the artwork.

The cover art by Tony Stewart is well done, and most importantly doesn't conflict with the interior art.  Too often nowadays when the cover artist and the interior pages artist are not the same person, a browser  / possible purchaser of the publication will think 'what happened?!' when turning to the splash page with much different art than the cover.   Not here, the artwork flows smoothly between cover and interior pages.

I enjoyed reading this mini-series, especially with the letter columns taking the time to publish letters from those that saw the earlier publications from 1997 and then viewed new pages online from the revised edition.  Plus the time that Robert Roach spent in explaining what had happened to bring this mini-series to a restart and a conclusion.  It had to be hard to have 'letter columns' in a mini-series when the whole series was printed at once!

For those blog readers of mine that are into this type of story genre in prose form, I would have to say that it should be a very good read for them!  Add to it being told in very nice panelized sequential artform, and you have another winner from the Black Inc. Imprints / Hometown Productions publishing group!

To get started reading the first issue of the series just click the following link to be taken to Hometown Productions store: http://hometownprods.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=28

Thanks again to Robert for bringing this earlier work of his to my attention, AND also again to Dale Wilson of of DWAP Productions who has turned me on to several works that other members of The Antidote Trust have turned out!

The blog I was going to post this morning is not ready for publication as of yet, per the comic creator's request.  So I took a look at what my blog readers were viewing on my Blog Stats, and found that last year's Veterans Day blog post was getting a lot of hits overnight and into this morning....

So, I'm moving up tomorrow's scheduled blog post to today, as tomorrow is the day of rememberance for Veterans Day.  Here's the link to last year's blog post that is being heavily viewed overnite, (click here.)

Last year I was prompted to blog after seeing that CNN was airing their morning program from the deck of the USS Intrepid.  That ship is part of the Museum in Manhattan that Tina and I saw on a past trip to the Big Apple Con's "The National" comic book convention. The photo I used in last year's blog post showed several different exhibits at the Museum, including: The USS Intrepid Aircraft Carrier, the USS Growler Nuclear Submarine, and the Concorde.

Tomorrow is our nation's day for honoring all of the Veterans that have served the country throughout its' history.

As you can see from the above two pictures, my Dad and Grandfather both served their Country.  (As well as multiple ancestors; plus earlier and current family members including uncles, nephews and now nieces!)

My dad served in the US Navy for 21 years.  One of his earlier cruises was on the USS Yorktown, a sister ship to the USS Intrepid that was pictured in last year's blog post.  So touring the USS Intrepid was 'like' looking at the same ship my dad served on those many years ago. My Dad's ship, the USS Yorktown has also been converted to a museum, and is ported in Patriots Point, Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.

My dad's dad was also a veteran, serving for his country in WWI. Ollie Hamersky, served under General John J Pershing in Europe, and made it back home after being gassed in the trenches. Unfortunately his childhood buddy, Henry Zerener, (the shorter man in the photo with him at left), never left Camp Funston at Fort Riley, KS.  Henry died from one of the illnesses that was rampant in the States during 1918.

So today, this blog post is dedicated to them, my other past and present family members, And to all the men and women who have served in our armed forces during our nation's history!

As for the comic book connection... War comics have been part of our heritage since even before the USA entered into WWII.

Captain America and other USA patriotic super-heroes in early 1941 helped shape America's thinking about what was going on in Europe before the bombing of Pearl Harbor December 7th.  Captain America was shown punching Adolf Hitler on the cover of  Captain America Comics #1.

Which by the way, was just featured on the November 8th episode of 'Brothers & Sisters'!  Did You catch that?  Scotty Wandell's father Wally is shown to be a long time comic book collector, and gives Scotty a copy of Captain America #1 at the end of the episode so Scotty and Kevin can sell it and then start their family...

Anyways, the comic book cover I chose to adorn the top left of this blog post is just one of thousands that I have owned during my many years of collecting. It was probably due to the fact that aircraft carriers like the one shown on the cover were the biggest man made objects I had seen or been in during my early childhood that made me pick that one up. (The comic is from January 1958.)  On the West Coast and in the Midwest when I visited family back there, there weren't any skyscrapers, so aircraft carriers made a BIG impression on me!

As also previously blogged about, it was my Aunt Marge and Uncle Howard McIntosh that really started me on reading comics.  However my own personal comics collection grew to  a much larger size while our family was stationed at the USN base on Kodiak Island 1963-1966.

That's because that other than fishing or hunting or crabbing, there just wasn't much else to do on an Island that only had a few miles of roads!  Plus at the Navy Base barbershop there were all kinds of comics to read and exchange with!  Yeah, Marvel Comics were hitting it big during that time, but with spotty distribution to Navy Bases, I couldn't always get the next 'continued story' issue, so I also read other comics but exchanged them back for Marvels when available!

Anyways, enough going off on another tangent here this morning...  As you have seen from the above,  Veterans Day, veterans, and war comic books mean something to me.  And No, I'm not a 'hawk' or even a 'dove'.  I just appreciate that comic books have not always been about 'super-heroes'!

My thanks to the veterans, and those veterans that also came back and worked in comics and added a sense of realism into the comic books that they had a hand in creating.

AND... Thanks again to all of YOU reading our current and archived blog posts!  We do blog daily on comic book creators, comic book reviews, comic cons, and other pop culture news and events including some TV shows and theatrical films as they are shown!

SPECIAL PHOTO FEATURETTE:   As mentioned above, and also in a few prior blog posts, I really picked up a lot of comics while my Dad was stationed at the Kodiak Naval Air Station on Kodiak Island, Alaska.  My mom, brother, sister, and I joined him there from the Christmas Vacation of 1963 thru August of 1966.

As you can see from the below photo, the Naval base, (in the forefront),  was the prominent feature on that part of the island.  The town of Kodiak is shown at the top of the photo. It is approximately 9 miles away via the only road between the base and the town.  During the years we were up there, there was only one TV Station and the internet hadn't been invented yet.  So for kids, there was only hunting, fishing, crabbing, and collecting comics!

For history buffs:  We left the Naval Air Station in 1966, and shortly afterwards in 1971 the Navy left also.  Today it is a Coast Guard Station.

(Clicking on the photo below, will take you to a much larger resolution photo. When the pop up window comes up... just click on the photo again to see a full screen shot of the photo.)

The Detroit Triple Fan Fair...

And Shel Dorf

Last week I blogged about the passing of Shel(don) Dorf, the Founder of the San Diego Comic Con....

Of course I wasn't the only one... there were many blog posts, and several TV segments about the man who passed away at the age of 76 after an extended hospital stay.

Shel was also mentioned as being 'involved' in the Detroit Triple Fan Fair before coming out to the San Diego area.

Below are paragraphs from earlier blog posts I published after meeting Rick Murphy out here in Carlsbad of all places back in February of 2008.  Rick had moved out here temporarily and he noticed my comic book t-shirt I was wearing while out on errands one day.  He struck up a conversation with me, and said he had a mini-warehouse of personal effects.

We went over the items that he had in his personal collection, and I helped him sell a few at that the time.  Since then Rick has moved on to the Las Vegas area. My thanks again for the info that he was able to share with me before leaving the SoCal area!

The illustration shown at the top right  of this post is a reproduction of the 1st appearance of the Detroit Triple Fan Fair (DTFF). One item in Rick's collection was one of these 14" x 22" poster boards that was used to promote the 1st Triple Fan Fair!  However Dan's original was discolored with age.

Data on the DTFF is scarce... The Michigan State Universities, Special Collections Division, has either Progress Reports or Program Books dating from 1969 to 1977 from the Detroit Triple Fan Fair history, but they are Sstill not accessible online (click here for call numbers).  At the time of this posting there is a copy of the 1973 program book for sale @ $30.00 in 'Fine' grade online.

The first Detroit Triple Fan Fair, (DTFF), was held at the Embassy Hotel on Cadillac Square during July 24th thru 25th, 1965. Admission Charge was only $2.00 for BOTH Days!  Compare that to the Comic Con International held in San Diego, (SDCC), where it now costs a minimum of $100.00 for a Four Day Pass with or without Preview Night included for the 2010 Con!

Dan Murphy told me that he was only 13 when the first Detroit Triple Fan Fair, (DTFF), was promoted in 1965.  For those of you that are not from that area, Detroit held one of the earliest 'Comic Cons' in the USA, tying New York City for the earliest!

When researching further for my earlier blog posts I found that the DTFF  was actually the  first multimedia convention ever held,  for comics, movies, and science fiction in 1965!

At the time Dan was looking for a collector or museum that would like to purchase it to add it their collection.  I am no longer selling those items for Dan, so you would have to contact him directly...

Dan remembered Rich Buckler, Greg Theakston, Shel Dorf, and Larry Larson among others that were working on the Fair during the early years.  I didn't get a chance to ask Dan abut Jerry Bails, who was also on the 'organizing committee' for the first DTFF.

Matter of fact, the Poster Board that Dan has, actually contains art by Larry Larson and Shel Dorf!  It would appear that while Shel was in Detroit, he had joined the art staff of the Detroit Free Press.  It was there that  he did photo retouching and some cartooning, thus picking up the skills he used at the DTFF and later at the SDCC.

Shel was also listed as 'Chairman' in the promotional literature for that con. Shel actually continued in several capacities there until the fall of 1969. That's when he moved to San Diego where his parents had retired.

It was there in San Diego that Shel preliminarily designed the first logo for the San Diego Comic Con, which was very similar to his design for the Detroit Triple Fan Fair, (which is in the top right of the above mentioned poster).

Rich Buckler went as a fan the first year, but ending up running things with Robert Brosch as co-chairmen of the Fair. Rich went on to develope Deathlok for Marvel, Reagan's Raiders for Solson, and other projects.

Initially the committee on the Triple Fan Fair were all sci-fi fans, which is how many of the early comic cons were modeled on!

The committee's nickname was 'The Misfits' for Michigan Science Fiction Society.

Shel Dorf then moved to San Diego, where he was the Founder of the San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) that has been blogged about so much here.  This blog post is just added today to fill in some more back history on Shel and the DTFF, which is the experience he gained and used to help guide the younger members of the early SDCC when getting it off the ground floor in 1969.

Thanks again to Dan who filled me in with what he remembered about the early years of the DTFF, and Shel's activities there!

AND... Thanks again to all of YOU reading our current and archived blog posts!  We do blog daily on comic book creators, comic book reviews, comic cons, and other pop culture news and events including some TV shows and theatrical films as they are shown!

PLUS... Welcome to ALL of You that were reading the eBay Version of our Blog prior to eBay closing 'their eBay blogs platform'.  That version of our Blog had 1.37 MILLION page views before the closure... However, This Blog version is the same Blog that has been published at the same time the eBay version was being published.  I've been publishing this version since September 2007, so it has the same Fun Stuff You are used to on the eBay version you were reading!

Speaking of eBay... Be sure to check out our new listings of comics, graphic novels, Comic Con exclusives and more pop culture items for sale in our online eBay Featured Store that our blogs are based on!  It's due to sales at this online store that keep us going with the ability to post blogs like the one you have read here today!

COMIC CON PHOTOS FEATURETTE:   It is due to Shel Dorf and other co-founders of the SDCC that Make It So Marketing Inc. even exists today, as the 'roots' of this company go back to when I first started selling comics at the 1972 SDCC while in college!

I bought out a dealer that wanted to leave the last day of the con, so I took over his inventory and table. That year the Con was held at the El Cortez Hotel, and attendance was only guestimated at 900+.

The below photo is taken from the 1973 SDCC when it was held at the Sheraton Hotel on Harbor Island in San Diego.  I had bought my table in advance (for only $40.00), and was there along with over 1,000 others for several days of fun.

Again, my condolences to Shel's family, and my thanks to Shel who was a major instigator for what I am doing today.  RIP Shel, you were appreciated!   Thanks.... Michael

Erik W Hendrix sent out 'Event Invites' to those fans of his FACTION Facebook Fan Page this past Friday....

I realize this is a little late for those out of the immediate local area to attend this event, especially since it is on a weekday, but I wanted to give notice of this event in my Blog today.

That's because Tina and I first met Erik W and Amanda Hendrix back on the night of May 30th at Sky High Comic's "A Night Of Art - Music - Comics In San Marcos California!"  (click here for that post).

Erik showed us several pages of his entry into the 2009 Small Press Idol Contest, (SPI).  Tina and I were impressed with his enthusiasm, and after that I blogged a few more times about his entry, which kept going further into each round of the SPI.  Finally it was at the end of the rounds, (Round 4), and then came the crucial point in the contest.  Would any of the final entries 'sell' as a pre-order comic?

Well, FACTION and the other remaining entries did sell... with FACTION coming out on top as the #1 entry!

So, I'm pleased to blog about the Event that is coming up this Wednesday in San Diego that has two of the FACTION creators signing copies of Issue #0!

Here's the details for this event:

Date: Wednesday, November 11, 2009
Time: 11:00am - 5:00pm
Location: Southern California Comics
Street: 8280 Clairemont Mesa Bl. #124
City/Town: San Diego, CA

Here's the message from Erik to FACTION fans:

"Come and meet the creators of Faction in San Diego. Erik Hendrix, creator and writer of Faction, and Arnie Gordon, artist of Faction, will be appearing at Southern California Comics in San Diego on November 11th. Tell your friends! Come get a signed copy of Faction issue 0, meet us, chat with us, and by all means see how awesome So Cal Comics is in San Diego... easily the best shop in the city."

The above are Erik's words, but I would have to agree that SoCal Comics is at least in the 'Top Three' of all comic book shops in the San Diego County area for sure! That's where we get the majority of our comics supplies, even though they are approximately 30 miles away from us here in Carlsbad.

Please Note:  SoCal Comics is very hard to find if You have never been there!  Seriously folks!  If you are thinking of going  there for the first time, please see the following map for directions.  This comic book shop is in an industrial warehouse / office buildings district, off of the main road, and even with a little bit of signage inside the commercial area, it is very hard to find the first time.  Especially since this event will be on a weekday and the area will be full of cars, making it harder to spot where all the comics action is!

Here's that link:  (click here).

If you are able to attend, and want to signify that, then please the following link and click the 'Attending' button.  Or if you are a fan of FACTION, and maybe can attend, or even can't be there, feel free to click those additional 'maybe' or 'won't' be there buttons also.  Here's the link:

Thanks again to Erik for sending me an invite to this event! I am looking forward to attending this event, as I have not yet met Arnie Gordon, who is the artist of this issue!
