HoRRoR Legend

Forrest J Ackerman Dies At 92...

RIP 'Uncle' Forry... You Have Been An Inspiration For Generations

News has arrived that Forrest J Ackerman, who on November 24th celebrated his 92nd birthday, passed away 11:58 PM on December 4th, 2008.

I just recently blogged about his 92nd birthday, (click here), and the fact that he was recently featured on the cover of 'Rue Morgue' Magazine Issue #83 (click here).

Forry, who just recently celebrated the 50th Anniversary of his  role in getting James Warren's magazine 'Famous Monsters Of Filmland' started in 1958, (click here), had kept busy, and indeed even had a Facebook account.

His works will live on for generations, and will continue to be appreciated.  My thanks for his contributions during his lifetime....

Did You Miss Gallant Girl's Debut?

Because She's Back...

For Issue #2!

By Kat Cahill & Seth Damoose

That's right! Issue #2 of Kat Cahill's new mini-series was on sale at your local comic book stores this past Thursday, December 4th, 2008!

Recently I became Facebook Friends with Kat Cahill, who messaged me that she had her debut issue of her comic book mini-series distributed on November 12th, 2008!

And... would you believe this past Thursday was the distribution day for the 2nd issue of her 3 issue mini-series!

In case you missed my earlier blog post about issue #1, here is the background for this mini-series:

The comic book is being published through Shadowline/Image Comics. Issue number two arrives December 4th, 2008 with the final issue of the three issue mini series arriving January 14, 2009.

So what is the mini-series about?

Well, the comic book follows a young woman named Renée Tempete.  She aspires to be the next 'Gallant Girl'...

'Gallant Girl' is actually a "legacy super-heroic identity" whose host is determined every ten years by pageant! Gallant Girl is the sole female member of the 'Fellowship of Freedom'.

I have not read the entire series storyline yet, so I didn't want to list more about the mini-series premise other than that!

But.... Here is where Kat Cahill's story becomes one that many would love to have happen to them:  “I Hate Gallant Girl” took an unusual route to the comics stands, in that it was part of a contest that was held by Shadowline.

Shadowline asked writers to submit their concepts for consideration, and from those thousands of entries, only five were voted on by the public!

Of the five, it was a different concept that was the actual 'winner' and that concept has already been published. However, "I Hate Gallant Girl", was such a favorite runner up that it too was selected for publication!

So, here's a comic book mini-series about a super-heroine that our blog readers might want to seek out either at their LCBS, or at their favorite online store...

Let us know what you think of this storyline should you read any of the issues from the mini-series!

Red Prophet:

Tales Of Alvin Maker

Volume One

This Is What A Graphic Novel Should Do...

... Get your attention, keep you interested in the storyline, and have good art that complements the time period or genre of the graphic novel.

This graphic novel did just that for me!

Which was surprising, because my most recent review of Orson Scott Card's work was 'Ultimate Iron Man', which defintely did nothing for me, and actually turned me off reading the rest of that series....

(That was basically because I grew up with the original Iron Man of the 1960's by Stan Lee, and this updated storyline in an alternate timeline / Ultimates Universe just didn't get my interest. But then again I wasn't the target market for this Ultimate Iron Man series...)

However this graphic novel by Orson Scott Card, Roland Bernard Brown, Renato Arlem, Miguel Montenegro, and others, is far, far different than the first book I reviewed !

From the get go the story brought in interesting characters, the artwork was very good for the time period, and the script had a story to tell that was fascinating!

The writing, the artwork, and the compilation of the comics into one book with a good cover would make it worth the $19.99 that is the cover price of this book.

Comics, graphic novels, and picture books don't all have to be about super-heroes. And contrary to what some may think... I do read and enjoy many genres of comics!  Maybe I enjoy running comic con photos of super-heroines, (like Wonder Woman), a bit much in our blog here on eBay (LOL)... but I do blog on other genres like this one!

This volume was so good, that I want to continue reading the series!

Now THAT's a recommendation!

Speaking of which, Tina and I have 450+ reviews that can be seen by clicking this link, including reviews on DVDs, graphic novels, comic book compilations, and more....
