There Shall Be...

Earthlight!

Or At Least Volume One Of This Series!

It was the cover of this book that grabbed my attention when I looking at our local library for trade paperbacks or graphic novels to read.

This is a story in manga art style that kind of grabbed me, the more I read into the storyline. I normally don't reach for manga art books, unless they are ones that  I am familar with from anime films that I see at comic conventions.

This book is from Tokyopop, who has a large presence at the San Diego Comic Con International each year.  I had not
seen this storyline before, but found that Stuart Moore, (the writer), and Christopher Schons, (the illustrator), combined
to tell such a good story that I'll be looking for Volume Two!

The story is set in the year 2068, on the Earthlight Lunar Colony. The colony has become a melting pot of scientific discovery and global tensions.

It is  a fiveteen-year-old Damon Cole who has come from Earth with his mom and dad that attends the new Earthlight Academy. Damon has it tough as his mom is the teacher, and his father is the new Chief Administrator of the entire colony.

Damon wants to fit in with the rest of the kids, several who have been born on the moon, but he hits a few rough spots when he is drawn into the life of a mysterious girl, her abusive boyfriend, and a finale to the first volume that you don't see coming!

Other than some of the language used in the book, (not appropriate IMHO for younger children), this is a well written and extremely well drawn graphic book. The only exception is the very ending when there is a radical turn in the storyline. But that is what Volume Two Is For!

I for one will be looking forward to reading Volume Two of this series!

William Shatner Presents...

 A

Free

Comic Book In 2009!

That's right!   You're not seeing things!

The above is the cover of the comic book that will be distributed FOR FREE at next year's FCBD, (Free Comic Book Day), on May 2nd 2009...

The comic is written by William Shatner, Scott Davis, David McIntee and CJ Henderson. With art by various artists, and the cover by Alan Brooks.

The comic book is being published by Bluewater Productions. Actor/novelist William Shatner is behind this production, as you can see by the logo on the cover!

Your LCBS, (local comic book store), will be providing a free 12-page original story prologue of the upcoming adaption of Shatner's best selling book series TekWar for Free Comic Book Day 2009.

The comic book will also feature a preview of the other Shatner-based comic book series Quest for Tomorrow and Man O' War as well as a sneak peek of the yet-untitled original story developed by Shatner.

So keep this in mind William Shatner fans, for something to look forward to next year...

And yeah, I still have my Tekno Comics T-Shirt from the early 1990's!  That was the publisher of William's TekWar comic book series. The t-shirt has lasted a lot longer than the comic book series did, that's for sure!

The Eternals Were Here !

The Eternals...

Were One Of The Many Concepts That Jack Kirby Developed For Marvel Comics!

I just finished listing several more Jack Kirby comics for sale including his mid 1970's 'The Eternals' series for Marvel Comics.

To set the stage for the Eternals series we would have to go back to 1970, when Jack Kirby left Marvel Comics to work on several projects for DC Comics.

Those projects included the saga of the 'New Gods' which was a separate Comic Book Series.

The New Gods was an epic story that involved both mythological and science fiction concepts. Jack had planned to have a definite ending to this epic.

However, this saga and his other 'Fourth World' titles were left incomplete after their early cancellation.

Jack Kirby, with his recent work for DC still in mind, began T'he Eternals' when he returned to Marvel Comics.

The Eternals' saga was truly thematically similar to the New Gods' work, but once again early cancellation this time by Marvel Comics left the series hanging without resolving many of its continuing sub-plots, in particular The Celestials' judgment over humanity.

However, Marvel just like DC in the years that followed both cancellations re-thought their viewpoints on the cancelled series.

So it was writers Roy Thomas and Mark Gruenwald who brought the Eternals into the 'official' Marvel Universe continuity. It was in a then very long storyline in the Mighty Thor comic book series that resolved the earlier cancelled sub plots and plot lines. The Big Finale climaxed in Thor #300!

So to you bloggers just reading about this series for the first time.... Who Were The Eternals?

They are a fictional race of 'superhumans' in the Marvel Comics Universe. They were an off-shoot of humanity that were created on the Earth by the alien Celestials. Of course in fiction there would have to be a race of counterparts, who are called the Deviants, and the two sides have waged war for centuries...

The Eternals made their first comic book appearance in The Eternals #1  published by Marvel Comics in July 1976. This is a small comic book series to collect. The original series numbered only 19 issues in the set.

Comic Book Century...

This Book Is Supposed To Be...

...the History of the American Comic Book for a younger readership.

It does cover a lot time periods in its' 112 pages, and since it does cater to the juvenile nonfiction category, it manages to at least briefly describe each period.
The cover is not the most appealing one for a mainstream reader in my opinion.  It features what appears to be a mad scientist and a dectective / crime scene.
However the interior pages do cover the beginnings of comic books, the superheroes taking off, the comics going to war, the Comics Code Authority stamp, and other major periods for comics. That was  the strong point to this book.

My only problem with the text, was that it had a few errors in the history it told. For some reason these errors keep getting repeated when the history of comics is told. Taking out those few errors, the book is well documented and sourced with several features at the back of the book for reference.

Other than that, the book had enough photos and pictures of the creations the text was about or the period it was referencing to. Stephen Krensky did a good job in the interior pages to interest the reader into learning more about the history of comic books from the 1930's to the 2000's.

This would be a pretty good book for a library to have in the juvenile nonfiction section, or for someone looking to get a young reader interested in the history of comics and possibly collecting them. The cover may not appeal to young girls however.

CHUCK

Is On A Roll...

Both On The TV Show Series & In Comics!

Tina and I watched the latest episode of CHUCK on NBC TV last night.  Monday nights aren't the same without a weekly dose of 'CHUCK' for us!

The Strike last year could have affected this series like so many others were affected... but it hasn't derailed this series IMHO.

This show is even better than the first season!
The actors are well cast and the storyline is interesting each and every episode. Plus the show seems to have a direction, which is in contrast with a few others that Tina and I watch on TV.

Additionally for those of you that watch CHUCK, there is also a 6 issue mini-series from Wildstorm / DC Comics that hasn't had too much publicity.

We weren't aware of the series until we found a few copies at last Summer's SDCC. The above photo to the left is of issue #6, the final issue of the 6 part mini-series.

If you know other fans of CHUCK, you might want to let them know of this mini-series. And don't forget about the special San Diego Comic Con International Special Edition Issue that is in addition to this series!
