A Jew In Communist Prague

Graphic Novel Series

Story & Artwork by Vittorio Giardino

This graphic novel series is a little old, (1997-1998), but I just came across it when checking out graphic novels I have not yet read.

The above photo is of the first volume in the set. It is called 'Loss of Innocence'.

The story may sound familar, that of a Jewish family being persecuted, but the storyline and the artwork is complementary to each other, and makes the book worth reading!

Vittorio Giardino makes this story so riveting that I had to check out the second volume to continue reading the story of Jonas Finkel, the son of the man that was sentenced to ten years in prison for conspiring against the state, (which he didn't do).

The offical reason for the state to come down on Jonas' family is their bourgeois background.  Unofficially the real reason is anti-semitic resentment.

This was such a good read that I had to find the second of the series, 'Adolesccence'. Both graphic novels moved me so, that I stopped to post a review of them in our 'Reviews' section right away... (Click here for all 444+ reviews.)

This is a very good example of what graphic novels can be... good  story line, good story text and good artwork! This series should be in every library that carries graphic novels IMHO.

A Great Reason To Collect Xena Comics!

A Great Reason To Collect Xena Comic Books:

Photo Covers Of Lucy Lawless!

For those of you that didn't catch the TV Show Series:

Xena of Amphipolis was a fictional character in the now ended television series Xena: Warrior Princess and also in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.  She was played by the New Zealand actress Lucy Lawless, pictured above.

Xena first appeared on the Hercules: The Legendary Journeys television series, (in the episode The Warrior Princess airing in March 1995), as a seductive but treacherous warlord.

Two more episodes during the May 1995 TV sweeps presented her evolution from a villainess to a friend and ally of Hercules. Viewer interest in her was so high that shortly afterwards she became the main character of her own spin-off series Xena: Warrior Princess,  and the two series quite often played back to back.

Ironically though, her character was originally obsessed with defeating Hercules and thus obtaining his title as the greatest living warrior, she never did defeat "Zeus' Favorite Son". As a matter of fact, Hercules was the one credited with pointing her down the path of redemption when he beat her in combat and showed her that selfishness and greed were not the way to live.

In her own TV series, Xena set out to redeem her murderous past by fighting against tyranny and evil and protecting the innocent and weak.  I personally caught the show after it had started and began watching the rerun episodes to catch up. A lot of her past would remain obscure, but flashbacks would open up new chapters in her past as she revisited the people or areas again.

For those interested in Xena comic books from Topps in 1997-1998 or Dark Horse 1999, we have several listed in our eBay Featured Store. Xena was published as mini-series by Topps, while Dark Horse published one unlimited series. We now also have several of the most recent series published by Dynamite Comics!

One of the pluses to collecting these titles starring Xena, is that you usually have a few Photo Cover Comics inserted into the runs. Those usually go first, and then the illustrated covers...!

I Hate Gallant Girl Too...

err.... make that TWO...

For Issue #2!

By Kat Cahill & Seth Damoose

That's right! Issue #2 of Kat Cahill's new mini-series will be out at your local comic book stores tomorrow, December 4th, 2008!

Recently I became Facebook Friends with Kat Cahill, who messaged me that she had her debut issue of her comic book mini-series distributed on November 12th, 2008!

And... would you believe tomorrow is the distribution day for the 2nd issue of her 3 issue mini-series!

In case you missed my earlier blog post about issue #1, here is the background for this mini-series:

The comic book is being published through Shadowline/Image Comics. Issue number two arrives December 4th, 2008 with the final issue of the three issue mini series arriving January 14, 2009.

So what is the mini-series about?

Well, the comic book follows a young woman named Renée Tempete.  She aspires to be the next 'Gallant Girl'...

'Gallant Girl' is actually a "legacy super-heroic identity" whose host is determined every ten years by pageant! Gallant Girl is the sole female member of the 'Fellowship of Freedom'.

I have not read the entire series storyline yet, so I didn't want to list more about the mini-series premise other than that!

But.... Here is where Kat Cahill's story becomes one that many would love to have happen to them:  “I Hate Gallant Girl” took an unusual route to the comics stands, in that it was part of a contest that was held by Shadowline.

Shadowline asked writers to submit their concepts for consideration, and from those thousands of entries, only five were voted on by the public!

Of the five, it was a different concept that was the actual 'winner' and that concept has already been published. However, "I Hate Gallant Girl", was such a favorite runner up that it too was selected for publication!

So, here's a comic book mini-series about a super-heroine that our blog readers might want to seek out either at their LCBS, or at their favorite online store...

Let us know what you think of this storyline should you read any of the issues from the mini-series!

I Wanted To Believe Also...

'Our Take'...  On The X-Files:  I Want To Believe DVD!

We have several new blog readers that aren't aware that Tina and myself having been reviewing DVDs, books, comics, etc., for quite a while. Here is our review of the DVD that was just released yesterday December 2nd, 2008. We watched the extended version of the film:

I Wanted To Believe Also...That this film would live up to the trailers that got me excited to once again see two of my favorite TV Show characters.

Unfortunately after the familiar theme music stopped playing, and the initial reaction to see Scully & Mulder back.... the film went to a drama film instead of a paranormal or sci-fi thriller.

The expectations for the film were not satisified for either my wife or myself, and we both loved the original TV series. We wouldn't have had such high expectations except for the trailer, which is also on the DVD, showing great action, paranormal, and sci-fi elements in the upcoming film.  The film  did not deliver what the trailer indicated.

Big Surprise? Well.... yes it was! Sure trailers place the best scenes in the trailer itself, but this film didn't go where the trailer indicated it would.

Scully and Mulder were portrayed very well by Anderson & Duchovny... and the addition of one of the other TV Show members helped out a lot. However Tina rated this only 7.5 in a 1.0 to 10.0 scale, while I give it a 7.75 rating.

The DVD didn't have any 'Making of' feature, instead it has Chris Carter talking about Hollywood going 'green'.... not a good substitute IMHO. The gag reel was worth watching. The 'Body Parts' bonus feature is for fans of CSI and that genre only... The still shots showed some cool collectibles I don't have from the show's period, and a few I had never seen.

This Film is 180 degrees different from the earlier feature film where the show mainly took place in Antartica. Tina thought that film was just a little over the top. This current film is just a little underwhelming feeling awful small and dark in comparison...

The above review and even more reviews on DVDs, Books, Graphic Novels, can be found in 'Our World', which is the portal to our eBay pages, which has the links to our reviews, listings of items for sale, archived blog posts, etc... everything that is part of our eBay endeavors.

Continuing For About Twenty Weeks...

A 'Wovel'

Titled

 "Firstworld"

By Jemiah Jefferson

I recently became Facebook Friends with Jemiah Jefferson, who informed me a week ago that her newest creative work is being published in a 'wovel' format.

'Wovel'?  Yes, a 'wovel' !  And she informs me that it will continue online for about twenty weeks in total!

One of the newest publishers, Underland Press, has as an 'extra' on their web site, a "Wovel" (short for "web novel"); which is written in weekly installments, (currently by Jemiah!) and, at the end of each weekly chapter, the readers get to vote on the direction that the story takes!

The url to the wovel is provided here: underlandpress.com/wovel.cfm

(eBay doesn't allow 'hot links' in the eBay blog posts to non-eBay pages, so if you are reading this on our Blog's eBay format version, just copy and paste the url into your browser.)

So what happens to the 'wovel'?

Well.... The author first writes it. Then the readers vote on it. Here's how it works online:

"Every week, the author posts an installment. Installment length hits the sweet-spot of online reading—long enough to get interested, short enough to read in the cubicle at work. At the end of every installment, the author writes in a plot branch point. Does the heroine kill her lover? Will the zombies catch the soldier? Is the box empty, or is it filled with bees?"

THEN THE READERS DECIDE!

"On Monday, the post goes up. Voting is open through Thursday. The author writes Thursday and Friday. The editors edit Friday and Saturday. The post goes back up on Monday. Part literature, part exquisite corpse. The pace of print journalism, the imagination of fiction, the spark of reader participation."

Again, to follow along the storyline and vote on where the 'wovel' goes, you have to go to the url listed above, read it, and then vote. Then come back to the url to see where the readers/voters have decided where the author should take the story.... Sounds Cool? Try it !

For those that would like to know more about Jemiah, the following is a brief bio:

"Jemiah Jefferson was born in Denver, Colorado and started writing fiction at the age of twelve. Her publications include the novels Voice of Blood, Wounds, Fiend, and A Drop of Scarlet.... She has also written fiction, essays, and criticism for Willamette Week, Just Out, Plazm, and 2GRLZ Quarterly!"

Just bringing this author and her latest work to the attention of our blog readers, as Jemiah is also an Editor with Dark Horse Comics, as well as an accomplished Author! Jemiah has her own web site where you can keep up with her at jemiah.com !
