By Corinna Sara Bechko and Gabriel Hardman !

This New Graphic Novel...  Is What I consider to be a 'good read' for those that like HoRRoR Comics / Graphic Novels.  So much so that I wanted to blog about it right away, as you should be able to find it at your usual sources for graphic novels very soon if not already!

This was a really compelling read for me.  Why?  The mix between the text and the art was enough to keep me reading it straight through till I was finished with it!  The graphic novel is basically 94 pages with a few background pages added at the end of the story for additional reference.

Those that have read prior blog posts of mine will know that I enjoyed the old EC HoRRoR Comics and the Atlas (Marvel) HoRRoR Comics of the pre-code era.   I like thriller comics that aren't overly out there for cheap thrills or scares, nor to tempt your gag reflexes.

These two creators established the mood for the GN and deliberately hooked me as a reader into wanting to stay with it until the end of the story!

At first the storyline is set in Africa... and other than a murder you wouldn't think this was a HoRRoR story...

But when the scares start the action doesn't stop until the last page!

What is weird about this GN are the elements that are added when the setting changes to the funeral scene of one of the main characters in the state of Florida. The cemetery is where the story opens up into the HoRRoR aspect.  Would you believe that in Florida you would run into Conquistadores, wooly mammoths, demonized dogs, and grizzly bears all at the same time?  Whew!

I'm not going to go into more than that for this blog post.  As a reader of blogs I don't appreciate reading all about the creative work being totally reviewed before I get a chance to read it for myself!

Suffice to say, that it is the black and white art of this GN that adds so much to the storyline and the script.  The text itself could have stood alone as a short story, but it is the artwork that completes this story.  Thus a great reason for this to have been created as a 'graphic novel'.

For those not familar with the creators:

"The writer, Corinna Sara Bechko, has had stories published in All Hollows, Reflection's Edge and Zoo View. She was shortlisted for the Aeon Award in 2005. Trained as a zoologist, she works as an animal keeper at the Playboy Mansion."

"The artist, Gabriel Hardman, has recently drawn comics including Monster Size Hulk, Agent of Atlas, Skaar: Son Of Hulk for Marvel and The Black Coat for Ape Entertainment. He is an accomplished motion picture illustrator whose credits include Spider-Man 3, X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, Superman Returns, the Austin Powers movies and Tropic Thunder. He also directed the prize winning short film Wrong Way Up, which premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival."

This graphic novel is listed at $9.99 From Shadowline / Image

ISBN-10: 1607060124
ISBN-13: 9781607060123
Format: Paperback
Publication Year: 2009

You Can Find Him In The 'Artists Alley' !

Tom Hodges... Messaged me that he will be attending the 2009 WonderCon, which will be held at the Moscone Center South in San Francisco, California from February 27 to March 1.

Tom will be in the 'Artist Alley' area at table AA 114. If you're in the Bay Area and plan on attending the Con, Tom welcomes you to "please come by and say hello and if you're so inclined, buy stuff. LOL, I'll have prints, the new 09 Sketchbook and original art for sale as well as doing sketches on demand".

My wife Tina is originally from the same area that Tom hails from... that of Cherry Hill, New Jersey!   Tom has since moved on to San Antonio, Texas...

Tom's major influence in his chosen career came during the Memorial Day weekend in 1977, "when he and his parents stood in line to see an innovative sci-fi film featuring amusing droids, unusual alien characters, and the epic battle between good and evil".

Tom says "Star Wars is why I picked up the pencil in the first place.”  It was during his formative years that Tom mainly focused on refining his drawing style.  At the age of 25, he attended the Art Institute of Philadelphia to train in traditional and computer animation.

Since those years Tom has gone on to draw a webstrip for StarWars.com, pencilled many sketch cards for Topps, (approximately 1,983 cards!), and more.

The 'more' includes being Co-Creator of MidKnight (a Red 5 Comic and upcoming Animated series), and "m" a comic series that has been delayed due to Tom's busy schedule!

For those that can't make it to Tom's table at 'Artists Alley' at the WonderCon, check out his artwork at:

Imagine Thor, Loki, Balder and The Other Norse Gods In Their Elementary School Days...

That's BRAT-HALLA!

This WebComic Has Been Running Since December 2003!

Click here to see our current listings of CARTOON Graphic Novels, Comics, Magazines, and other Pop Culture Items for Sale!

Anthony Lee... (pictured to the left), informed me of the web comic that he is coloring that I wanted to share with my blog readers!

So what is this web comic about?

"Brat-halla is a webcomic about the Norse gods from their elementary school days. All-Father Odin and Frigg constantly have their hands full with Thor (the super strong runt of the litter), Loki (the god of mischief who likes to play with dolls), Balder (the invulnerable pretty boy), Hod (the blind god of darkness and winter), Hermod (the hyper super speedster god), and all the rest of the Norse pantheon."

I have blogged before about my fondness for Thor... ever since I found doing my genealogy that my surname has Viking roots. Originally my surname was Hamerski, but was 'Germanized' in the USA to Hamersky because my earliest immigrant ancestor arrived in 1866 from West Prussia and lived with Germans in Minnesota. The surname had been taken from the village of Hamer in Poland with a minor noble adding the 'ski'. Where did 'Hamer' come from? Click Here for the rest of that story!

Enough about me... There is a new interest in all things Thor right now, because of the Marvel Film that is in pre-production at this time.

This webcomic is not the Marvel Comics version... Instead it is the creation of writer Jeffery Stevenson, whose love of mythology gave birth to this webcomic.  Seth Damoose is the artist.  Anthony 'Tony' Lee is the colorist.

So if you are a fan of Norse mythology... and can imagine young Norse gods in the classroom... in the school cafeteria... at recess... and getting in trouble after school, then this webcomic is for you!  As the creators of this web comic say it's "All free... all the time.... every Wednesday and Friday"!

Main story: Wednesdays

Hod's Comic: Fridays

To view the first page of this comic: www.graphicsmash.com//comics/brathalla.php?view=single&ID=11950

Brat-Halla is just one of the current projects that my Facebook Friend Anthony Lee is working on.  In a future post I'll mention his latest venture. In the meantime you can check out his fan page if you are a Facebook member at:

I have blogged about James Warren, Forrest Ackerman, and others recently, so my blog readers will know that I have interest in this genre of fiction, both in print and film.

However, Pierre's Blog is so much more in depth on his topic, and well worth reading if you are into Frankenstein films, photos, books, etc. It truly is 'Frankensteinia' to the max!  The top left photo of this blog post comes from his Blog and features Forrest Ackerman and Basil Gogos going over Basil's painting for Famous Monsters #57!
