The Watchmen Film

'Our Take' Part 1

 Opening Day, March 6th 2009

From A Comics Fan POV!

Click Here to see all of our currently listed Comics, Books, and Graphic Novels!

Last night as I sat there at the end of the film, credits rolling, One Word came to mind for me... 'Riveting'!

So you may think, 'So What? He's a comics fan. He's a Fanboy. Sure, of course he would like this movie'.

Well, it may be heretical for me to write this, but I am not a Big Fan of the Watchmen Comics series, nor a Big Fan of the compilation into a 'Graphic Novel'!

The Watchmen Graphic Novel may be considered to be "One Of Time Magazine's 100 Best Novels', and that's "Novels" not "Graphic Novels" per Time Magazine. However it is Not on my list of 100 comics related publications, either in comics format, trade paperback compilation, or graphic novel that I would take if banished to a desert island if I was limited to just 100 comics related publications. Seriously!

I bought a copy of the 'Graphic Novel' recently for Tina to read, as she had never read the comics series, or this compilation book.  (Her thoughts will be in Part 2 of this blog post series.)

Tina was the one who stood in the long line for Hall H at last year's San Diego Comic Con International, (SDCC), not I, and she was intrigued by what the special program with its' guests previewed for the crowd that attended.  It's been she that wanted to know more about the film and was really looking forward to the Film's release date, not I.

To me, reading the 'Graphic Novel' that the story is now printed in, left me going OK... more grim n' gritty. And the ending chapter left me wanting.  Not wanting more, but unsatisified as to how much time I had spent reading all twelve chapters to have that ending.  I was however impressed by all of the 'hype' and 'buzz' that this Film has been building to.

Please note:  I do not consider anything I will say further to be a 'spoiler' as it is in the Graphic Novel, (GN), so there is NO 'Spoiler Warning' here.

A film-goer who goes to this movie may find this film to be lacking... and IMHO, the lacking would be the lack of the film goer to read the 'Graphic Novel' first, and be aware of the different chapters in the storyline.  The film is already in an illustrated format, and there's no excuse for not reading it Before going to see the film.  The film's director is not going to wait for you to catch up to speed, as he takes the film literally from the pages of the GN!

Yes, earlier I said that the Film was 'Riveting' to me last night with the credits still rolling... I still think that this morning.  In my mind the Film rated 9.4 on a numerical 10.0 grading scale.  In other words 'Near Mint' (NM) which is what is used in grading a near perfect comic book.

Before you go 'What?!', I've got to explain something. This is NO Film to take children to.  It's rated 'R' for a reason folks.  Actually rated 'R' for several reasons, including nudity, extreme violence, and more.

We saw several families take their kids to this. It is NOT a 'superhero' movie.  Is it an 'anti-superhero' movie?  Probably.  Does it have the nudity, sexual situations, extreme violence, and more as explained in the Film's Rating of 'R' ?  Definitely!

I am Not a Big Fan of taking what has been a general audience comic book series and transforming it to a 'R' rated film.  However, this Watchmen series was definitely a 'R' rated comics series from the beginning, and was not downplayed to make it a PG-13 film.

Those that are reading other reviews where the film goers are blogging that they were 'shocked' or 'left cold' by all of the sex, violence, and general mayhem without the 'action' of the usual 'comic book movie', should be aware that those viewers blogging probably didn't do their homework by first reading the comic series or graphic novel before attending Opening Day.

Long time readers of our Blog will know that both Tina and I are Not fans of gore, gratitous sex, extreme violence in either our reading or film viewing.

So why the 9.4 'Near Mint' rating for me for this film?  The film transformed what for me was an OK, but not going to re-read it again graphic novel into a Riveting film that I would buy to view it again when it comes out on DVD. That says something right there IMHO.

The film is directed so well, the characters come across vividly, the actors were cast right on, the scenes are mind boggling, and the ending made sense this time. That is why this film ranks so highly to me!  I hardly noticed the two hour & forty five minutes running time of the film. That's because I was 'into' the movie and had a 'preview' by reading the GN.

Again, let me re-state the negatives to viewing this film if you have Not read the graphic novel or comics series, and felt either pressured or fell for the hype to see it, or want to see it.

It is not for young children; it has full frontal nudity both male and female. It has almost explicit sexual scenes including a (near?) rape scene. It has what could be considered extreme violence. It does NOT have 'action' running throughout the film.  If you are thinking it is another 'comic book movie' like Spider-Man film because of the trailers that have been released, you are thinking wrong...

In conclusion, if you have read the Watchmen comic series or graphic novel and enjoyed it, then this Film should be something that you would enjoy as it is literally taken from the pages of the story.  If you read it in either format and found it just OK like I did, then you may marvel at the transformation to the Big Screen like I did, or you may not.

If you have not read Watchmen in either format, then you should read it before going to give you a better feeling during the movie, instead of trying to catch up with the storyline as it jumps from the 'present' time of the story in 1985 back to the 1940's and back again.  Earth's history has also been changed, and remember the story was written in 1985-86, and the film was Not updated to 2009. President Nixon is still president, (for a fifth term!), and there were other history changes...

For those of you that are interested in a "Woman's Point Of View from a non comic books geek", be sure to come back and read my wife Tina's post which will be Part 2 of 'Our Take' on Watchmen.  That should be published either later today, (Saturday) or Sunday morning!

BTW, we have blogged about 'Watchmen' a few times before. For the previous mentions in our posts, just click here!

The Riverside International Film Festival's Deadline For Submissions...

Is March 15th 2009!

Click Here to see our newly listed Comics, Graphic Novels, Books and other listings for sale!  That's because the Festival itself runs from April 17th to April 26th, 2009! The Festival will be held at the Regal Cinemas, Riverside Plaza, in Riverside, California.

Today is March 6th, 2009 and the big event of the Day is the 'Watchmen' Film's Opening.  Of course Tina and myself will be going later on in the day for that!

However, that is also a reminder to me that I should blog about another Film happening that is being held in SoCal next month.

No, I'm not blogging again about the the Cut! Film Festival which will be taking place the weekend of March 14-15, 2009 at the historic Aero Theatre, 1328 Montana Ave. at 14th Street, Santa Monica, California! (See here for all blog posts on that Festival.)

Today I'm blogging about The Riverside International Film Festival (RIFF), which is celebrating its' 7th Year!

I was sent a notice from the publicist as follows:

Calling all filmmakers! Submissions are now being accepted for the 7th Annual Riverside International Film Festival. The deadline for entries is March 15. Visit http://www.riversidefilmfest.org for more details. This exciting event begins April 17 with a dazzling opening night gala and goes through April 26 with a glitzy closing night gala. Screenings will be at the Regal Riverside Plaza Stadium Theaters at the Riverside Plaza. The address is 3535 Riverside Plaza Drive, Riverside, CA, 92506.

I took a look at what the previous year's entries were, and found one stop motion animated short film by Dustin Grella titled 'Glimpse'. A brief sample of that film is shown on the producer's web site at http://www.dustingrella.com for you to view.  The photo below the Film Festival's logo in this blog post is a sample scene from that 'Glimpse' film. Of course this Film Festival is varied in the genres of films submitted for exhibition.

According to the publicist of the Festival and the web site, the RIFF "continues to grow in size, scope and stature as a prominent venue for top quality international cinema, showing films from around the world, including world premieres, features, shorts and documentaries".

Should you be in the film industry, you might want to check out RIFF's web site for entry details. Don't forget the deadline is nearing... March 15th, 2009!

As a Film viewer finding yourself in Southern California between the dates of April 17th - 26th, you might want to add this Film Festival to your calendar!

Fred Hembeck Has...

Fred Hembeck...

Has A 'Nearly Complete Essential Hembeck Archives Omnibus' Out!

Click Here to see all of our currenty listed Comics, Books, and Graphic Novels!

I have been a fan of Fred Hembeck's work... for quite a while, and only recently started to let some of my own personal collection of his works go up for sale.

One item that I don't have is the book that was released in May 2008, by Image Publishing.  The book was released as "THE NEARLY COMPLETE ESSENTIAL HEMBECK ARCHIVES OMNIBUS".

Which would be darn near complete, because this Omnibus features 912, (yeah 912!), pages of material written and drawn by cartoonist Fred Hembeck.  Not to say how long Fred has been at this, but the features included in this Omnibus were pulled from the past three decades!

The Omnibus itself is divided into seven sections:

Section One: "Little Freddy: Growing Up In The Silver Age of Comics". The 'origin story' of Fred Hembeck in 12 pages.

Section Two:  Which would be one of my favorite sections! All seven of Fred's early eighties Fantaco books, 276 pages worth: HEMBECK: THE BEST OF DATELINE:@#$%; HEMBECK 1980; ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE BRIDE OF HEMBECK; THE HEMBECK FILES; BAH, HEMBECK; JIMMY OLSEN'S PAL, FRED HEMBECK, and DIAL H FOR HEMBECK.   These have been long out of print magazines (OOP).

Section Three: A miscellaneous section that brings together all the Dateline:@#$% strips that were not printed in the Fantaco collections, plus later ones.  Fred's work for other fanzines such as THE COMIC READER, COMICS SCENE and Fred's contributions to the once annual AMAZING HEROES SWIMSUIT SPECIAL, showing 124 pages of art!

Section Four: Contains 60 pages of material from Fred's years as a member of the comics apa, CAPA-alpha, back in the early eighties.

Section Five: Fifteen different strips are printed here, ranging from a single page all the way up to ten pages.

Section Six: Fred's work in the mid-nineties including Dateline:@#$%! This section has 210 pages collecting ALL the strips done during that period for THE COMICS BUYERS GUIDE, COMIC BOOK ARTIST, COMIC BOOK PROFILES and more.

Section Seven: This collection is of items Fred has drawn since the 1990's to today. Too numerous to list!

The Omnibus also has a Foreword by Stan 'The Man' Lee, plus an Introduction by Jim Salicrup, and last but not least... an Afterword by Al Gordon!

Besides the items that I am listing in our own eBay Featured Store, Fred is also currently listing, (as of this blog post publishing), several unique one-of-a-kind items from his own personal collection on eBay. Including this Omnibus with a special signature!

You can see those items being listed by Fred by clicking here!

If you have not seen Fred Hembeck's unique style of cartooning, you should check out a publication or two of his!

(Note: A complimentary copy for this mention / review was NOT provided by the author nor the publisher.)

'Comics And The Impact On Film Today' Panel At Cut! Film Festival!
Mood:  caffeinated
Topic: Other Cons

Click here to see our current listings of Graphic Novels, Comics, Magazines, and other Pop Culture Items!

Cut! Film Festival

Will Feature A Panel With Mike Grell, Mark Ryan, & Steve Niles!

CUT! Film Festival celebrates film and those who create them...  As mentioned in an earlier blog post, I have been notified that LiquidSPACE in conjunction with Graykin Entertainment and GALS Charitable Foundation will be presenting CUT! Film Festival 2009! The festival is a benefit and celebration of cinema dedicated to the art and imagination that goes into the creation of film.

The festival will be taking place the weekend of March 14-15, 2009 at the historic Aero Theatre, 1328 Montana Ave. at 14th Street, Santa Monica, California.

What is neat about this festival is that "from concept to pre-production, production and post, you’ll hear the back-story of how a concept became screenplay and how screenplay became film".

My main interest in this Festival is on an project that I blogged about before, Code Name: Zeus. (Click here for that blog post.)

However, there is also another special Panel being shown there that would be of interest to those interested in Comics and what are considered 'Comic Book Movies':

"COMICS AND THE IMPACT ON FILM TODAY Panel, showcasing the talents of legends in the comic world, MIKE GRELL, a 30+ year veteran of comics (The Green Arrow, The Warlord, Jon Sable) and winner of the prestigious INKPOT AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN COMIC ART, partnered with MARK RYAN, who together have written a new graphic novel entitled, The Pilgrim, and fellow veteran of comics and film, 30 Days of Night, creator and writer, STEVE NILES, will discuss the evolution of comics in film today. This promises to be a fascinating topic of discussion."

There are several other projects that are presented at this festival, but lack of space in this blog format keeps me from mentioning them. I'll leave you to check out The Cut! Film Festival blog site at:  http://www.cutfilmfestival.org.

I have been told that all the screenings and panels will be followed by a 'Meet and Greet Session' with the guests.  So for those of you able to attend this Festival bring your camera and a sharpie and most of all, enjoy the weekend seeing as many programs and panels as you can

Also, there is an important raffle going on prior to the Festival... check out this link for details: http://www.cutfilmfestival.org/raffle.html

Click Here to see our current listed Comics, Books, and Graphic Novels, some! Steven Niles, a Facebook Friend of mine, is known for his comic book work on 'The Nail' (Dark Horse), 'Bigfoot' (IDW), a Batman mini-series 'Gotham County Line' (DC Comics), '30 Days Of Night' which was optioned for a major motion picture release, among other works!

Mike Grell is most widely known for his 'Warlord' comic book series for DC Comics, his own creator owned 'Starslayer' and 'Jon Sable Freelance', and the Tarzan comic strip from 1981-1983.

Mark Ryan has worked in TV and Film for many years, probably best known for his voice work in the 'Transformers' Film as the robot 'Bumblebee'.  His latest work 'The Pilgrim', is a graphic novel inspired by factual events occuring during WWII concerning modern psychic warfare research.
