Fantastic Paintings On Baseballs By Monty Sheldon...

Plus A New Feature For 2009!

My morning schedule includes... checking emails, eBay sales, Facebook messages, and then blogging.  After blogging, I check to see our blog's visitor stats to see what is of interet to current readers of our blogs.

So even though my Blog isn't about sports, there have been several visitors already today checking out an archived blog post of mine that is 'sports related', yet also has 'roots' in comic books!  That would be the post on Monty Sheldon's Artball and Sketch Card Series that I posted back on February 7th.

Monty Sheldon became a Facebook Friend of mine after he first purchased some back issue comic books from our eBay Featured Store!

With his online payment he added on a clickable tagline link, which I, being the curious fellow that I am, clicked on it.  I was transported to his web site and totally blown away by the items that I saw he had painted and listed on it!

I immediately wrote him back and asked more about his creative works.  He also mentioned his 'Sketch Cards' works.

Part of my ongoing conversation with him included the following from Monty:

Click Here to see our Newly listed Comics, Books, and Graphic Novels!    "You might be curious to see my latest art project for 2009.

Every Sunday night I will be posting on eBay 3-5 1/1 fully penciled sketch cards featuring various baseball and other sports stars of today and yesterday.

I believe it is the first time, for sports cards anyway, that 1/1 sketch cards have been part of a numbered set. So far so good. Drawing them has taken me back to my days at DarK Horse Comics. They are a real blast to work on!"

As Monty mentioned being at Dark Horse Comics, I asked him about when he was there.  In another message he mentioned a little more:

"I worked there from 1989 - 1998. When I started working there I had become the 13th employee at the time.  When I left I had become the 5th in seniority behind only Mike Richardson, Randy Stradley, Chris Chalenor, and Neil Hankerson. It was a great place to work."

Monty has done really well since his days at Dark Horse Comics.  His cards start at bid for $49.95 including Free Shipping, and one of last week's card auctions, (a Jackie Robinson sketch card), had 12 bids on it and ended up at $255.01 ending bid!

Monty's eBay listings for his sketchcards can be found at:

http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/rube77_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_mdoZ

Those currently up for auction end in just a little over 5 days from this posting!

Monty's other creative works including his 'ArtBall' creations can be viewed at his own web site:

http://www.montysheldon.com

(Note: A complimentary item for this mention / review was Not provided by the artist.)

I want to thank Monty again for adding that tagline with his message!   For you Baseball Fans out there that are reading this blog post, you gotta check out those two sites for more of what Monty has created!

A Different View Of...

The Thing Versus The Hulk!

As Drawn by Fred Hembeck!

As mentioned in an earlier blog post, I have been a fan of Fred Hembeck's work... for quite a while, so it was only natural that I would stop in at his Facebook Comic Con Table this past weekend!

While at his 'virtual table' at this 'virtual comic convention', I noticed that he didn't have any of his illustrations for sale, so I double checked his eBay listings to see what was newly listed.

I was 'blown away' when I saw the illustration that is pictured above in this blog post!  My favorite Marvel Superhero character is the Thing, and I always loved it when he and the Incredible Hulk would go at it!

My earliest recollection of such a confrontation would be in the pages of Fantastic Four #12 from March 1963, and then later in Fantastic Four issues #25 & 26 in April/May 1964.  Those were Great Jack Kirby Classics!

Fred's artwork is uniquely different, and one that I also appreciate.  He had other pieces there for sale, including the following characters:  Lady Blackhawk, Power Man & Iron Fist, the Captain Marvel Family, Spider-Man versus Sandman (my youngest son's fav of Fred's current illos), and Mr Fantastic with the Invisible Girl, among others.

Click Here to see all of our currenty listed Comics, Books, and Graphic Novels! You can see the above illo of the Thing vs the Incredible Hulk in its' fully illustrated size, and other items being listed by Fred by clicking here!

If you have not seen Fred Hembeck's unique style of cartooning, you should check out his listings plus a publication or two of his!  Plus maybe even 'join' his FBCC Table afterwards as the con continues 24/7 now after the Gala Premiere!

(Note: A complimentary copy for this mention / review was NOT provided by the artist.)

The Gala Premiere Of The Facebook Comic Con Ended Last Night...

But That Doesn't Mean That The FBCC Is Over!

Click Here to see our listed COMIC CON promos for sale!

Michael Netzer, Founder of the FBCC, Is Pictured Above

That's Right!   The Facebook Comic Con's Gala Premiere started last Thursday March 12th, 2009, and ended last night, Sunday March 15th.

However one really nice thing about this 'virtual comic con', is that no one had to pack up their table after the Gala Premiere ended on the 15th!

Yes, those who had tables at this 'virtual' Comic Con, have left them up for those of you who didn't get a chance to visit the Con this past weekend, or those of you that want to come back and 'virtually walk'  another round of the exhibit floor!

Those exhibitors included writers, artists, publishers, and dealers, (like ourselves).   Many photos of past, current, and even upcoming comics, graphic novels and other pop culture items were displayed.  Dealers like ourselves even had promotional sales going on and discounts tied in to the Premiere Gala.

Also, there were Honored Guests at the Con, including William Katt (The Greatest American Hero), who had not one, but three 'Live Chats' during the con that he took and answered questions from those 'virtually attending' the Con!  Now that is being a Honored Guest Star allright!

I have blogged earlier that the FBCC was also having a Premiere Costume Competition. See this blog post for the winners of the competition!  My thanks to Lisa Hager-Duncan for running such a great event. It was a pleasure being one of the five judges for the competition!

My youngest son and I really enjoyed visiting the Portfolio and Script Reviews Hall.  This area of the Con was co-ordinated by Stacey Aragon... Thanks to Stacey for a great show!

The Pow Wow Hall with panels and inteviews was co-ordinated by Jack Chiu... Great Job Jack!  And as at any non-virtual con, I didn't get a chance to see it all... but This time I can go back and catch those I didn't see because it is 24/7... Wow indeed!

And... of course what is a comic con without a program book?  Well Thanks to Marc Fletcher, there is one!  Check it out!  And yes there plans to have it as a 'hard copy' in the future....

If I missed any of the co-ordinators of the FBCC in this post, my apologies... because as at other cons, I can only 'walk' and 'see' so much at a con!

A Very BIG Special Thanks has to go out to Michael Netzer, who created and promoted this virtual comic con to the world in only one month's time!  Great job Michael!

I for one will be continuing to keep our dealer table there, with links to our eBay Featured Store, so that others that missed the Gala Premiere can still stop by and say hello or even shop!

Below are just a few of the main booths where you can find out what happened, and best of all... What is Continuing to happen!

Don Bluth's

Animation Tutorials Now Available On DVD!

Click Here to see our newly listed Comics, Books, and Graphic Novels!

Don Bluth...   May be a familar name to you, because of his many years in the animation industry.

Starting out at Disney Studios  he was an animator on Robin Hood, The Rescuers, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Pete's Dragon, among other films there.

When he left Disney in 1978 he set up his own animation studio, Don Bluth Productions.  Don has had 'hands on' experience as well as management of animation features that have grossed multi-millions of dollars in worldwide releases.

His own production company has been involved in the animation segment in Xandau, Dragon's Lair (the video game), and The Secret of NIMH, among other releases during the years.

Now the first of Don Bluth's Animation Tutorials is currently for sale on eBay via his own eBay listings.

Here is a blurb from his marketing promotion:

"Have you had the thrilling experience of seeing your drawings come to life? We are not talking about mere movement here, but the thrill that comes from giving your characters “the illusion of life.” If you have not experienced this thrill, let Don Bluth be you mentor. He will show you many of his secrets that he has learned during his fifty year career as an animator/ director for both Disney and his own company. These tutorials focus on the techniques of drawing and the principles of animation, with the goal of helping you expand your skills as an animator. Don’t miss these exciting and informative sessions."

Run Time Approximately: 42 Minutes

Not Available in Stores...

Additional info on what is presented in this first DVD are:

"This animation principle is ubiquitous. It is present in all animation shots. In this lesson we will explore the nature of an object, its mass and its reaction to the gravitational pull."

And....

"Don Bluth will answer the question of what causes a bouncing ball to gradually diminish the energy of its bounce.  These simple principles of physics are then applied to character hops, and jumps, and rhythms.  Animation characters must appear to have weight."

I had the opportunity to view this DVD from start to finish myself...

I am not an animator, but enjoy reading and viewing how the comics, graphic novels, and films that I watch are created. This DVD tutorial shows Don at work explaining how certain aspects of animation are created.

Don's voice is smooth, consistent, and pleasant to hear. He takes his time to show every detail in getting each concept across to the viewer.  Additionally, the camera shows the animation being drawn by Don from both the side view, over the shoulder, and from the overhead of the drawing table itself.

This DVD is a good lesson in applying several techniques that Don illustrates in this lesson. No, you won't get all the Secrets from this Master of Animation in just this one DVD, but what is shown is clearly and succinctly illustrated for you.  This is one of what is a few DVDs in a series where Don shares his years of experience with you.

This tutorial, one on one with the viewer, could make a good start for those interested in the art of animation. Think about it for yourself or for a friend or family member who is thinking of going into the animation field!

The eBay listing for this special tutorial DVD from Don Bluth can be seen by clicking here

(Please note:  This listing is NOT one of Make It So Marketing's... it comes directly from Don Bluth's eBay enterprise.  Additional  Note: A complimentary copy of the DVD for this mention / review was provided by the creator.)
