TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3177:

Yesterday I blogged about receiving a collection of comics from actor Richard Herd to sell...

That was because I recently received a phone call from Richard, who had a booth at the recent Wizard World Anaheim Comic Con. Click here to see my blog post on that.  I had met Richard before at a 'Quantum Leap Con' years ago, but at that time I wasn't selling consignments nor blogging. This time I had flyers and business cards as to what I do for myself and possible clients.

I was a little surprised to find that the westerns that he included in the box that was shipped to me were several 'key' issues, which were pictured in yesterday's Blog #3176.

Today I want to bring attention to the fact that a few of the Phantom Comics collection had signed issues by Lee Falk.

I wondered about that, and asked Richard why those were in there.

Here was his response:

"I'd forgotten about Lee's signature.

That gives them more value, correct? I knew him very well.

I did my Acting apprenticeship for Lee & Al Capp when they ran the Boston Summer Theatre in the 50's.

He was one of my sponsors in the 60's when I became a member of the Player's Club in NYC, the oldest Actor's club in America."

My answer to Richard was that those comics signed by Lee Falk would be of more monetary value, and posibly as well the fact that had belonged to him, (Richard Herd).

I was briefly aware that Lee Falk had been involved in theater, but not to the extent that I found after reading his 'Wikipedia entry' as seen here.

Richard was in some good company working with Lee, as Lee had Marlon Brando, Eva Gabor, Charlton Heston, and Paul Robeson, just to name a few of the actors and actresses working with him!

Talking about acting, here is Richard Herd's own 'Wikipedia entry' for you to see most of his credits: click here!

BTW, talking about Richard's credits...A lot of you will remember Richard in Star Trek.  He also tells me the following:

"I will be a Celebrity Guest at the Star Trek convention August 6-7 & 8th. at the Hilton in Las Vegas."

So...I think I've covered everything now about the new comics I've received from Richard Herd, and that are now being listed for sale.  Again, the direct link to the store aisle that just has the Richard Herd Collection is listed here.

My thanks again to Richard Herd for sending me the above shown comic books and more to be listed in our online store!

BTW, You can see what else Richard is doing by checking out his own web site at RichardHerd.com - where he has many photos for sale where he will personally autograph them to you!
My personal favorite is the photo of him as 'Captain Galaxy' along with Scott Bakula as 'Future Boy' on an episode of 'Quantum Leap'!  I am posting that photo near the bottom left of this blog post!

Wrapping up this blog post...My Thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts, now totalling over 3,175 posts in number!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3176:

I always pass out my business cards or flyers at conventions no matter what size or type of convention they may be.  That's because I also sell comic books as well as blog about them...

I recently received a phone call from Richard Herd, the famous actor, who had a booth at the recent Wizard World Anaheim Comic Con. Click here to see my blog post on that

Richard called to ask me if I bought and sold collections for people.  My answer was yes, and I suggested how we could go about it.

I was a little surprised to find that the westerns that he included in the box that was shipped to me were several 'key' issues, which are pictured above.

Of course, I called my mother, who was a BIG Fan of Gene Autry. This past Fathers Day Weekend I brought the western comics down to my folks' house, and asked her to pose with them.

She did, and then proceeded to give me a handwritten story that I want to share with you all here today:

"I grew up during the Depression.

Our first radio was one where you had to sit with the ear phones on your ears.

When my parents, my sister, and I lived in Hatfield, Missouri on a farm, we used to go to western movies.

The movie theaters were in Eagleville and Allendale. The cost of the movies were cheap back in the 'forties.

My dad, (Orris 'FJ' McIntosh - pictured to the left), was a western fan, so we saw a lot of Randolph scott's movies. My favorite movie star was Alan Ladd and we saw his movies.

My dad read a lot of western books during th long winter months. I think his favorite author was Zane Grey.

My sister, (Leta), and I liked Roy Rogers and Gene Autry.  We used to argue about the two of them.  Her favorite was Roy Rogers, and mine was Gene Autry.

Roy Rogers was born in Ohio.  He was married to Arlene and they had two girls.  He and Arlene had one son and then seh died. He later married Dale Evans and they had one girl. They named her Robin Elizabeth and she had Downs Syndrom. She lived around two years.

Gene Autry was married to Inez, and they didn't have any children. She passed away and he married a younger woman. I think she was a vice-president of a bank in Los Angeles, California area.

I remember the Lone Ranger and his sidekick.  Also Hopalong Cassidy.

I think my favorites were the early ones: Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and Alan Ladd. I thought Alan Ladd woas the most handsome man when I was growing up.

I guess you would say Randolph Scott was my dad's favorite. It seems like we saw a lot of his movies when I was growing up at the theater in Eagleville, Missouri."

Thus ends the blog post for today contributed by Lois E Hamersky, my mother.

My thanks to her for giving me the above article to run in this blog post today.
Also my thanks to Richard Herd for sending me the above shown comic books and more to be listed in our online store!
I'll have to run that photo soon here so you can also see that!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3175:

Yesterday I had business in Downtown San Diego. So afterwards I stopped in at a LCBS in the Ocean Beach neighborhood of Metro San Diego.

That LCBS (Local Comic Book Shop), was 'Galactic Comics' owned and managed by Edward 'Ed' Fogarty.

I haven't been there in a long time, because I don't frequent that area of Metro San Diego very often, (beach area).  But a LOT of outlying area residents and visitors to San Diego sure do!

Which is why I am blogging about this today.  The Ocean Beach Street Fair is running between the hours of 10 AM and 8 PM.  It is the 31st Annual Event!

Plus, it is actually the 13th Anniversary of Ed moving Galactic Comics from Voltair to Newport Ave.  He told me how he worked hours on end to be be ready for the 1997 OB Street Fair!

Ed actually started Galactic Comics back in 1994 and it stayed there on Voltaire until 1997.  Congrats to Galactic Comics on staying in business for so long!

I would have to say one of the reasons that Galactic Comics has stayed in business is because of the comics & movies savvy of it's owner, Ed Fogarty!

Truly half of the shop is on comics & TBPs & Graphic Novels, while the other 50% is on DVDs to rent or purchase - action figures - and other pop culture items.  Please Note:  Ed has a fine selection of current titles and possibly a few months of previous issues of those same titles. However, he does NOT carry a backstock of older comic books.

So if you are either visiting San Diego this weekend, or living in the Metro Area, be sure to check out OB's Street Fair and stop in to see Ed's Galactic Comics located at 4981 Newport Ave, San Digo, CA 92107. The phone number is (619) 226-6543!

Of course if you aren't coming to San Diego until later in the Summer, you are welcome to stop in anytime during the LCBS's regular hours of:

Mon - Fri:
    11:00 am - 9:00 pm
Sat - Sun:
    11:00 am - 10:00 pm

You can become a Fan of Galactic Comics at it's Facebook Fan Page by clicking here.

For more info on Ocean Beach's 31st Annual Street Fair, just click here!

My thanks to Ed Fogarty, for bringing this Ocean Beach Street Fair event to my attention.  The reason it is of such short notice is because I just saw him at his store yesterday afternoon, and this was the earliest I could blog about it!

However, as mentioned in the above post, if YOU find yourself in the Ocean Beach / Point Loma area of Metro San Diego, stop in and check out his LCBS's selection of comics AND selection of DVDs to rent or purchase!

AND My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts, now over the 3,170 total posts in number!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3174:

This past month I have started to mention the upcoming 2010 Comic-Con International: San Diego by posting comments on my Facebook Group Page, (found at Hamersky.com), and brief mentions in this Blog.

As noted yesterday at my Facebook Group Page, I will be starting to blog more about upcoming events, panels, guests, etc., that are scheduled to be at this Comic-Con.  Forgive me if I refer to it at the SDCC (San Diego Comic Con), as that is what it was basically called since I started attending it as a dealer back in 1972.

Today's blog post is about Gary Friedrich and Otto Binder Who Will Receive the 2010 Bill Finger Award!

I am going to center this blog post just on Gary Friedrich, as he is the person whose works I am more familar with, as I was a 'Marvel Maniac' for about two decades starting in the 1960's:

This is from the Comic-Con International (CCI) web site itself, about the Award & Why it is given each year:

"Comic-Con International is proud to announce that Otto Binder and Gary Friedrich have been selected to receive the 2010 Bill Finger Award for Achievement in Comic Book Writing. The choices made by a blue-ribbon committee chaired by writer-historian Mark Evanier were unanimous.

This is an award about excellence and about contributions to the field which have not received the recognition they deserve," Evanier explains. "Bill Finger sure merited more acclaim than he got and in his name, we try to honor others who have been similarly overlooked. Many people know of and love the work of Otto Binder and Gary Friedrich. Not nearly enough know the names of the men who created that work."

I remember reading a LOT of Gary's works during the mid 1960's.  That's because:

"Gary Friedrich was a member of the legendary Marvel Bullpen of the sixties, joining the company in 1967 after a brief stint working for Charlton Comics on strips that included Blue Beetle and The Sentinels. For Marvel, he began with westerns and quickly segued to super-hero features including The X-Men, The Incredible Hulk, and Marvel's version of Captain Marvel. He distinguished himself with a long, memorable run writing Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos, and in 1972 he introduced a new, memorable character with the name of Ghost Rider, which has had a successful run in publishing and which in 2007 resulted in a major motion picture bringing Friedrich's fiery hero to the screen."

So that's just some of the reasons why Gary Friedrich was selected to be the co-receipient this year!

So you ask, what about Bill Finger, whom the Award is named for?  Especially if YOU aren't a long time comics reader or collector. Well, the CCI states the following:

Bill Finger (1914-1974), the unsung hero and co-creator of Batman, scripted the first and many of the best Batman stories during the Golden Age of comic books. He created many of the series' most notable characters, including the Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, and Two-Face, and he made significant refinements to Batman's concept and persona. Finger wrote the scripts that introduced the Bat Cave, Batmobile, Batplane, and Batsignal. Many terms he created, such as the Dynamic Duo and Gotham City, have become part of our lexicon. Finger was a craftsman, and his Batman's adventures were carefully plotted, as well as being imbued with humor and sprightly repartee. Above all, he was a visual writer-he knew instinctively what the artist could translate into compelling pictures and sequential narrative.

Finger's comics writing credits include many other DC characters, including the Green Lantern and Wildcat, and many titles for Quality Comics, Fawcett Publications, and Timely Comics. His television credits include episodes of 77 Sunset Strip, Hawaiian Eye, the animated New Adventures of Superman, and the primetime Batman series."

So now you know who Bill Finger was, and why this Award is named after him. Plus this year's receipients.

You may be thinking...What about any earlier receipients of this Award?  Well those include:

2009:  John Broome & Frank Jacobs
2008:  Archie Goodwin &Larry Lieber
2007:  Gardner Fox & George Gladir
2006:  Alvin Schwartz & Harvey Kurtzman
2005:  Jerry Siegel & Arnold Drake.

Please Note Date & Time of the Presentation:

"The 2010 awards are underwritten by Comic-Con International. DC Comics is the major sponsor; supporting sponsors are Heritage Auctions and Maggie Thompson.

The Finger Award is presented under the auspices of Comic-Con International: San Diego and is administered by Jackie Estrada. The awards will be presented during the Eisner Awards ceremony at this summer's Comic-Con on the evening of July 23 at the San Diego Hilton Bayfront."

My personal favorite stories written by Gary Friedrich would include several that he wrote at Marvel, including Kid Colt Outlaw, Black Widow stories in Amazing Adventures, The Gunhawks stories in the series of the same name, several Rawhide Kid stories, and of course several Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos! Plus Butch Cassidy stories over at Skywald Comis! The GCD has his credits listed here.

My thanks to the folks at Comic Con International: San Diego for posting this special event early!

And of course, My Thanks to Gary Friedrich for providing me with hours and hours of fun reading during the years!

Plus My Thanks to Bob Bailey who gave me permission to publish the above three photos of Gary Friedrich from the June 2010 HeroesCon in Charlotte, North Carolina.  You can find out more about Bob Bailey from his Facebook Member Page, and if you have the same interests, send him a Facebook Friends Request! Bob is a "North Carolina collector, former Kubert student & Disney artist and regular contributor to Alter-Ego"!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3173:

The past couple of months I have mentioning an upcoming book that I have written a chapter (essay) for.

That book is pictured above with a provisional cover, to show you what the book is all about.

The book is titled 'Gotham City 14 Miles'.

This blog post is titled 'Mile Marker #10...'. That is a neat way of saying that Chapter (Essay) #10 has been hi-lited at the Facebook Fan Page for this book, as seen here: 'Gotham City 14 Miles'. And yeah...Mile Marker #10 is 'marking' my essay / chapter I submitted to this book!

The really cool thing is that even after my chapter is hi-lited...we've got 4 more Mile Markers to go to list all the chapters!  Great promotional idea, Jim Beard!  Jim is the Editor of this project, and asked me if I would like to get involved in submitting an essay.

Well...Do the photos that I've published above from the 1996 San Diego Comic Con and the 2010 Wizard World Anaheim give you the idea that the Batman TV Series from the mid 1960's holds some interest for me???  LOL!

The series does hold interest for me, and I've been embarking on covering more pop culture type of comic cons since last year.  Mainly to see the stars of that TV Series to blog about here in my blog. I've already posted a few, and this is just one more in a series of those to be published before the 'Gotham City 14 Miles' is finally released at the end of 2010!

Here's the promo that Jim posted on yesterday's wall post at 'Gotham City 14 Miles' Facebook Fan Page:

"Mile Marker #10 - “Holy Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor!” - by Michael D Hamersky. Veteran blogger and comic book showman Hamersky address the topic of youthculture as presented in BATMAN '66, zeroing in on Robin's presence and education as well as other examples of youth in the show and adult perception of them. Hamersky uses personal anecdotes to skewer a few teen-age 1960s tropes".

Thanks Jim for the great write up! I do appreciate that, and I also look forward to reading the other 13 essays / chapters that are being shown as 'Mile Markers' at the Fan Page!

So, I'm going to wrap this up for now, by displaying a few links related to the Batman TV Show and / or TV Stars that had a role in the series:
