Penn & Teller

...And Comic Books?!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3900 -     Well... Like I mentioned in yesterday's blog... We have returned from our vacation from Las Vegas / Primm Valley, Nevada!

I have downIoaded all of the photos / videos that we shot during the trip, and will be uploading them in the weeks to follow, per each blog's topic.

Today's topic is the Penn & Teller show!

I of course knew of them, but had never seen them in person.  Sure, I saw Penn Jillette on the Celebrity Apprenctice a second time this past season, so I was comfortable with seeing him, as well as Teller who showed up in an episode of the show!

The evening we had at the Rio's Penn & Teller Theater was fantastic!   If you head out to Las Vegas... You should take this show in!

Here's the link to the Penn & Teller Wikipedia entry.

Plus here is the link to their own web site.

I will be uploading a video from the opening of the act at my YouTube Channel soon. In the meantime here is the photo album at my Facebook Fan Page.

As for the comic book connnection... Well, there have a lot of magicians in comic book history!

Including of course, Doctor Strange from Marvel Comics, Magicman in Forbidden Worlds from ACG Comics, Mandrake the Magician from King Comics, and Zatanna Zatara from DC Comics just to name a few!

As for the word 'Magic' itself... There are over 200 different comic book titles with 'Magic' as part of the title!

So there is a connection between 'Magic Shows' & 'Comic Books'!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Answers The Question...

Where Has The San Diego Comic-Con International Been Located At?

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3899 -     Well... We have returned from our vacation from Las Vegas / Primm Valley, Nevada!

I have several emails / messages to reply to, so I want to to just answer a quick question that was asked of me while I was gone.

The question was... 'Where has the San Diego Comic Con been located at?

Well, it started on March 21st of 1970 at the U.S. Grant Hotel.  That was the one day mini-con that had approx 145 attendees.

Then from August 1st thru 3rd of 1970 there was the 3 day con. It was also known as the Golden State Comic Con.

1971 saw the con move to Muir College at UCSD in La Jolla.  That ran August 6th thru 8th.

1972 saw the con named San Diego's West Coast Comic Con.  The con ran August 18-21.  I set up there on the last day of the con as a comic book dealer!

1973 the con moved to the Sheraton Hotel on Harbor Island.  It ran August 16-19, with 1,000+ attendees. A photo of myself is to the right.

1974 saw the con move back to the El Cortez Hotel.  Where it stayed until 1978.

1979 & 1980 the con was at the Convention and Performing Arts Center.

1981 it was back at the El Cortez Hotel.

From 1982 thru 1990 it was back at the Convention and Performing Arts Center.

Then it moved in 1991 to the San Diego Convention Center, where it has been at since then!

Whew!  That's a LOT of history for a con that has grown from 145 attendees to over 130,000!

The 1st Concert of the 2013 Season in Carlsbad, California!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3896 -     Earlier this week, in blog #3893, I mentioned that Friday night, June 28th, was the start of the 28th Season of the TGIF Jazz In The Park Concert Series presented by the City of Carlsbad, California.

Above is just one photo of the concert that I shot at the event.  The rest of the photos are presented at this special photo album in my Facebook Fan Page.  Note:  The Euphoria Brass Band played the first set, then Madame LeRous & Krewe played.

Tina & I, along with a couple of our neighbors, had a fun time at this concert!  We each brought great food & wine to share, so it made for an enjoyable evening!   For more info on the FREE concert series, see my blog #3893 for who else is playing the rest of the season!

Plus, I do have music related comic books, (mostly rock n roll), in my online comic book shop!
