At The Races...

On My Birthday & In Comic Books!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3912 -     Yesterday I blogged that July 24th was my Birthday, and that I was off to the races!

Well... My wife & youngest son joined me on this little adventure, and we had a great time at the Del Mar Racetrack!

Usually when I attend the Racetrack I win the first few races and then proceed to give the winnings back and a little more, the rest of the day...

Well, yesterday I won 5 out of the 8 races, ending with the 8th and final race!   That was a good day at the races for me!

Oh, and Tina won 4 out of the 8 races, so she was pleased also!

My youngest son, Vinnie, had never been to the racetrack before, so it was a new experience for him.

We had half price hot dogs & beer & soda for the day, and then at the end... We went to the Asian Buffet in Vista.

Not a bad day at all to celebrate my birthday!

Oh... And the connection of the Racetrack to Comic Books???

The photo at the top of this column shows Strange Sports Stories issue #2 from Nov/Dec 1973 with a dinosaur at the horse races!

Plus there are several more horses / horse race covers to be found at the Grand Comics Database!  Can you find them?  Try Fury, Mr. Ed, National Velvet, just to name a few!

For more photos from yesterday's trip, see this special photo album at my Facebook Fan Page!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3911 -     That's right!  Today is my Birthday!

And my thanks to all of you that have already posted a 'Happy Birthday' wish to me at my Facebook Personal Page

Funny thing is... I was getting used to celebrating my Birthday at the Comic-Con International: San Diego the last several years, 2008 - 2009 - 2010 - 2011, as the SDCC took place during my Big Day! But this year and last year the Comic-Con took place close but a few days different from my Birthday...

Oh well, I did have a lot of fun at the 2013 Comic-Con, as I mentioned in Monday's Blog #3908.  I always have fun there, as I get to meet comic book creators such as Jose Delbo for the first time. (See top right photo for a photo of him and me this year!)

I've come a long ways since the 1952 year, (see my 1st Christmas in the top left photo), and have a lot to remember and appreciate...

I do appreciate being still alive... We lost Richard Alf last year, (co-founder of the San Diego Comic Con in 1970), who was only 59 when he passed away, just a few days short of being 60 years of age... His passing affected me for several months.

Since I won't be celebrating at the Comic-Con this year for my Birthday, my wife and youngest son are treating me to a 'Day at the Races' at the Del Mar Racetrack!  My youngest son has never been to the races, so it will be an exciting day to introduce him to this sport.

Besides having half price beer & hot dogs today, (It's Wednesday / Diamond Club day), I'll probably end up a buffet at the end of the day.  I've got my mind on a certain Asian Buffet in Vista... But we'll see how many hot dogs I consume first today, LOL!

Oh, and if you are thinking what could Michael want for his Birthday... Well, I'd appreciate it if you would 'Like' my Facebook Fan Page, Michael D Hamersky On Comics, and let your Facebook Friends know about it also!

Anyways, this is just a brief respite from my blogging on the 2013 Comic-Con International which ended this past Sunday... I'll be back with more from the SDCC after coming back from The Races!

Oh... And in 2014 I should be able to continue celebrating at the Comic-Con International... As it starts on July 24th!  That is... If I'm lucky enough to be able to purchase a ticket online before it sells out!  The 2013 Comic-Con sold out online in 93 minutes!

~Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On The ...

2013 Comic-Con International: San Diego Souvenir Book

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3910 -     With the 2013 Comic-Con International: San Diego over... It's time to review blog some of the events / publications from this year's show!

One of those is the Souvenir Book for 2013, which is something that I review blog at the end of each Comic-Con, (see blog #3681 for last year's review).

The front cover features the Sandman, who celebrates his 25th year in 2013.  The Sandman series by Neil Gaiman that is!  The cover was illustrated by Dave McKean, who was an artist on the 75 issue series.

Plus, in addition to a special section in this Souvenir Book on The Sandman’s 25th Anniversary... This year’s book also features coverage—including art and articles by fans and pros from around the world... devoted to the following anniversaries:

    Superman 75th
    Avengers 50th
    Doctor Strange 50th
    Doctor Who 50th
    X-Men 50th
    ElfQuest 35th
    The Tick 25th
    Eisner Awards 25th
    Bongo Comics 20th
    Milestone Comics 20th
    Strangers in Paradise 20th
    TwoMorrows Publishing 20th
    Aspen Comics 20th

Here's a few thoughts of mine on the above anniversaries:

Superman 75th - Although I must be one of the oldest fans there this year, (or so it seems!), I wasn't there for the start of Superman! LOL!  This anniversary is pretty well represented, and should be fun reading for any Superman fan.

Avengers 50th - I was there for the start of the Avengers... Sheesh, it has been 50 years now! Good article on this anniversary and illustrations.

Eisner Awards 25th - I haven't been to all of the Eisner Awards Ceremonies... But this is a good article about the history of the Awards.

TwoMorrows Publishing 20th - WoW!  Has it really been 20 years since I first saw John at the SDCC?!   Great publishing era going on since he first published Jack Kirby Collector #1!

Plus featuring the Anniversaries... There are special spotlight interviews Michael Lovitz (who celebrates his 20th year presenting the Comic Book Law School) and noted comic art and pop culture retailer Bud Plant (who has been exhibiting at Comic-Con for the last 44 years!).

Oh... This 224-page, full-color trade paperback also presents the bios and photos of all of this year’s special Comic-Con guests, with a look back at the past year in award winners and sadly—appreciations for those persons we’ve lost since the last Comic-Con.

Plus there are some other features as well.  There is a lot of info in this 224 pager this year!

If you weren't able to attend the 2013 Comic-Con, I'll have the Souvenir Book listed for sale at my online comic book shop for you to purchase, as seen at this link.

Another well done publication by Gary Sassaman & Jackie Estrada & staff!  I give this year's Souvenir Book a Near Mint Minus (NM-) 9.2 for their efforts!

~Michael

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3909 -    Peek "Under The Dome" Tonight! - A San Diego Comic-Con 2013 Panel Report...

I wasn't sure if I wanted to fight the Comic-Con crowd to Sunday's panel for Under The Dome (CBS). I'd seen them at WonderCon (see my review here in blog #3829) so would it be worth another look? Five minutes in, I was sure glad I did. We were treated to a sneak peek of tonight's pivotal episode which was well worth braving the crowd.

If you've been on the fence about the CBS summer replacement series, now's the time to pick a side (or you may end up like that unfortunate cow).

Me - I'm all in.

Why? There was a moment in the episode when I turned to the stranger next to me and said, wow, now we have a show. She smiled broadly and nodded because I couldn't have heard her over the audience's roars of approval. I highly recommend that you watch tonight. Trust me, you'll know the moment. It will surprise and delight you.

There were more than a few awesome moments in this episode (thankfully, no cows) that made me feel that the writers were ready to cut the schlock and throw down.

Unfortunately, we still have annoying Angie to contend with - who after tonight's episode takes the crown from Junior as the reigning irritant.

Tonight's episode packs some surprises and some that you can see coming. Pay attention to the small touches and quiet moments. You'll find plenty to make you want to continue to peek Under the Dome each week.

-- Tina LoSasso

2013 Comic-Con International: San Diego
(aka San Diego Comic Con / SDCC)!

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3908 -     Whew!  The 2013 SDCC / Comic-Con International: San Diego ended yesterday at 5PM!

Those were some very busy days at the Con, from the Wednesday Preview Night to Sunday at 5PM!

The 2013 Comic-Con was the 24th Comic-Con in a row for me that I did not miss, (since 1991), and I go back to 1972 when I first set up as a comic book dealer in the El Cortez Hotel!

However... The Comic Con of 1972 was far, far different from the 2013 version! Here's 'My Take' on the 2013 Con:

1) PARKING - Last year I was out of town when the pre-paid parking was put on sale online.  I missed out on purchasing parking under the convention center.   That was a big mistake!  This year I was in town and was able to purchase all five days of parking under the convention center.  Much, much smoother!  This is the only way to go if you are picking up anything, as walking with items during the con is too much effort.  Yes there is a bag check, but still you have to pick up those items and walk them to wherever you are going after the end of each day. Rating: Near Mint (NM) 9.4.

2) LINES / LINES MANAGEMENT-  I'll let my wife, Tina LoSasso talk about the BIG problem she had with lines this Comic-Con.  She attends just the Film & TV Shows panels / programs, and runs into problems with those lines being way out of control!   She does attend my choice of panels with me at the end of the day, usually in the evening, which are much smaller in length.   The only program I didn't get into was the 20th Reunion Panel for X-Files, but I didn't get into the line until late, so that was a possibility of not getting in.  Still, the comic book related panels / programs that I attended had longer lines than previous years... Rating: VERY GOOD (VG) 4.0.

3) PROGRAMS / PANELS - I found myself taking it easier this year in attending panels / programs.  I didn't skip out halfway through a program to attend another one that was running at the same time.  So it was much more mellow for me.  Indeed, Saturday was a pleasure going from one panel to another, but again these were comic book related panels, so the lines were not long. Rating: Very Fine Plus (VF+) 8.5.

4) PREVIEW NIGHT - You know... both Tina and I are wondering why we even went to Preview Night!  The size of the crowd inside was not fun to wade through, and the swag was minimal.  We didn't bother to stand in the line Under The Sails to get in early, as there was nothing that we 'had to get' on Preview Night.  We didn't walk through Downtown San Diego earlier, and there were minimal parties during / after Preview Night that we could even attend.   Definitely reconsidering attending the 2014 Preview Night.  You have to wait all day for the Comic-Con to open at 6PM and it only runs till 9PM.  Three hours for what...??? Rating: Good (G) 2.0.

5) EXHIBIT FLOOR - The areas around the Film & TV booths was not walkable... I stayed away from those areas after Preview Night.  The Artists Alley was pressed up against the Hall H wall.  The Independent Press section was not recognizable as such.  The Fan Tables area on the Mezzanine was something you traveled through from one escalator to another.  The Gold & Silver Pavilion with comic book dealers was lightly attended, except for Sunday.  I talked with a few comics exhibitors who expressed dismay that sales were down from previous years... Rating: Fine (F) 6.0.

6) OFF-SITE EVENTS - Tina and I did not attend any Off-Site Event this year.  Either because they were exclusive parties or that we were in panels / program till late at night, keeping us from attending.  Rating: No rating.

7) EXPANSION OF COMIC-CON -  Tina and I did not make it to the Hilton Bayfront for any programs. Too far to walk.  We did go to to the Marriott to redeem two different redemption tickets for items being given away for those attended the programs.  The Vikings program gave a free #1 sealed comic book, and the Falling Skies gave away a poster / poster tube.  Those were actually worth walking down to Marriott to redeem!  Oh, and the Lyceum Theater at Horton Plaza is now part of the programming of Comic-Con.  You gotta be kidding!  You had to get a ticket at the Convention Center to attend a Lyceum Theater program.  Sheesh!   Rating: No rating, but I'm tempted to give it a Good (g) 2.0 grade.

8) PRE-PAID MEMBERSHIPS FOR 2014 - Those days of lining up to purchase the next year's membership ended last year.  Everything is now online.   Which is a major bummer, as you have to be lucky to purchase a membership in the 90 minutes it took to sell out for 2013 on the day the memberships went on sale... Rating: No rating.

9) FINAL THOUGHTS ON THE 2013 EVENT - I looked at 'My Take on the 2012 SDCC' blog from last year, at blog #3678.  At the end of last year's convention, I wasn't that thrilled about the event that had just ended.   This year, I'm feeling better about the con.  I was more relaxed at this con, not running from program to program, but staying in the one I had chosen, and was able to get into!  Due to attending so many programs / panels, I was away from the Exhibit Floor a lot.  Which was also noticed by several dealers, as I was not the only attendee to do so.  The choice of panels / programs was varied, as my wife was able to get into most of the programs she wanted to see, but had to sit through many programs she had no interest in.  As for myself, I really enjoyed Saturday's lineup of panels and didn't hit the Exhibit Floor except for a half hour at the opening of the Con Day.  I did run into more friends and Facebook Friends than in previous years, and had a good time at several booth / tables when I did get down to the Exhbit Floor.   So my rating for this year's con was a Very Fine (VF) 8.0... But the Comic-Con is still too big for the current size of the San Diego Convention Center!  The photo of Galactus at the top right of this blog reminds me that even Galactus is dwarfed by the size of the Comic-Con!  The City of San Diego has to get started building the addition to the Convention Center!

10) LINKS -  Both Tina and I took photos / videos every day.  Here are the links for my special photo albums, which are all at my Facebook Fan Page, Michael D Hamersky On Comics.

Preview Night Photo Album

Thursday Photo Album

Friday Photo Album

Saturday Photo Album

Sunday Photo Album

I haven't yet uploaded Tina's photos, but they will be found at the same Facebook Fan Page.  You will have to skim down the Photo Album page to find them.

The videos will be uploaded in the days (weeks) to follow as I get to them, at my YouTube Channel, HamerskyOnComics

Also, in the days to follow... I will have items picked up or purchased for resale from the 2013 Comic-Con listed at my online comic book shop, ComicBooksCircus.com!

Thank you for reading this review blog on the 2013 Comic-Con International: San Diego.  I hope this helps you in making up your mind whether or not to attempt to attend the 2014 convention.

Oh, and one last final thought... This year I didn't celebrate my birthday at Comic-Con.  However, next year, the 2014 Comic-Con runs July 23rd (Preview Night) through Sunday the 27th.  So once again, I'll be celebrating turning another year older at the SDCC!   Which has occured several times during the years, as the Comic-Con usually runs in July!

~Michael

Possibly even copies of the item(s) that was mentioned here today...!  If I have it, you'll find under the BIG TOP of Comics, at Comic Books Circus.com!

In Addition, I started a YouTube Channel just before the 2011 Comic-Con International, where I am slowly uploading videos from conventions or other events that we attend that are also pop culture related.  You are invited to 'subscribe' to that channel also!  As found at 'HamerskyOnComics'!
