My 'Take' On the September 2010 Collector Con In Oceanside, California!
Mood:  caffeinated
Topic: Comic Cons

My 'Take' On the September 2010 Collector Con In Oceanside, CA!

My youngest son & I attended this past weekend's  Collector Con, and I wanted to bring this show to your attention...as there will be Another One in October!

IF you live near Oceanside, CA, which means  North San Diego County, Metro San Diego County, South Orange County, and Riverside County... You  could find this show to be of interest! The promoters of this show and several of the 1st month's exhibitors actually live in Riverside County, in Murietta and Temecula, plus other exhibitors came as far as Upland (near Pasadena), and the High Desert, (Joshua Tree).

Please Note: This is NOT a comic con, but a collectors swap meet show. It is held outside in the elements as the photos will show.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3244:

This past Saturday my youngest son and I attended the 2nd monthly Collector Con in Oceanside, California.

I blogged about the 1st monthly show last month, as seen here in this link.

This blog post is about my thoughts of the show, and some of those vendors I met there.  This show is still working the kinks out as any new startup would be. It is a venue that is really needed in the North County San Diego County area...

The following are just a few of those that I met at this show that I want to share with you:

On the right as I walked into the Collector Con area of the swap meet were a couple that I had met at an earlier San Diego Quarterly Con.

They were  Rich & Karen Clayton as seen in the photo to the left.

(L-R) A customer, Rich, Karen, Michael. They currently don't have a web site that they sell from, but if you are attending the October Long Beach Comic Con, you can see them there.

Also on the right hand side going down the opening aisle, was Sarah from TSG Entertainment.

TSG Entertainment has a Facebook Fan Page at Thou Shalt Game Entertainment.

The store is physically located in Temecula, California.

Talking about gaming...It was TSG that was sponsoring the gaming tent this month.

To the left is Jesse Lopez, of TSG.

Each time we walked by the tent, it was full of players!

Robin Miller of Bobby's Comics was there.

She had several boxes of Disney Comics, and other cartoon comics.  These had been the collection of her deceased brother, Robert Carbine, who was a well known collector.

She currently doesn't sell these online, but send me your want list and email address, and I'll forward her your info should she have what you are looking for.

Darren of Sky High Comics was also there... I've blogged about this store a few times in the past.

This was another local store that set up at this show. Their store is in San Marcos.

Here is their Facebook Fan Page.

Still I was coming across new vendors that had set up at this month's show.

To the left are Paul Luna and Rick Westbrock, of the Fanatical Gamers Society.

Here is the web site for that Society: FGSNC.com.

To the left are Michael Babalolu & Julie Brooks, owners of Funland Comics ARcade N' More up in Sunland, CA, (near Pasadena).

Their web site is WindowShopShop.com, which you can check out.

Last in this blog, but certainly not least, is Heather of Retro Entertainment Services.

I see Heather and Raven White at many of the conventions I attend.

They definitely have many DVDs that YOU should check out when you see them at a convention near you! They have rare & OOP movies, TV series & More on DVD.

Matter of fact, if all goes as planned for the next Collector Con in October, they will be having a super event in the evening.

When it is confirmed, I'll be blogging about it here, and mentioning at my own Facebook Group Page at Facebook Comic Con | Make It So Marketing.

I've run out of space and time to include more in today's blog post.  I'll be blogging about the October event when it is confirmed and the posters are printed.

So I would suggest that if your are near the North County San Diego area, to check this 'Collector Con' out on October 23rd when it is running again.  Keep your calendar open for that until all is confirmed...

---------------------

BTW, here's my son's Vinnie 'Take' on just two of the booths that we visited and that he had special interest in:

"Yesterday, my dad and I went to the Oceanside Collector's Con. While there, we went to each booth, to check out the selections. At one of the tables were these people, Ron and Sheri. They are owners of SPLATEZ,  and to quote, "Home of the coolest switchplates on earth." We were talking and joking around for awhile, and of the pictures my dad took, the picture to the left seemed to fit best with the atmosphere at this table. I got a Spider-man switchplate there, which was great, because currently, I don't have one. Now I'll have the coolest switchplate to cover the gap in the wall holding wires. You can visit their site at www.SPLATEZ.com.

Also while there, we visited another booth. The guy's name was Brian Bennion (sp.), and he used to own Top Flight Comics. After talking for awhile, and my dad purchasing some comics, Brian asked if I was missing any comics for my Amazing Spider-man Collection, as that was one of the topics in our conversation. So I picked out a few and he added them in the deal my dad was making, for free. Thanks Brian!

----------------------------------

Again, the next 'Collector Con' is scheduled to be on October 23rd of 2010.  You can keep up to date with this show at their Facebook Fan Page.

My thanks to Gino Carpinelli this month, and to Fabiano Carpinelli for the information about the show when I first arrived last month. Plus my thanks to Deanna Carpinelli who was also informative near the end of the first show for me!

AND My Thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts, now totalling over 3,240 posts in number!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3243:

What's the saying...???

"All Good Things have to come to an end..."?

Well, if that's the case, last night Tina and I once again joined a few of our church friends at the 5th and FINAL Night of the 2010 Leo Carrillo Film Festival.

This is the same Film Festival that I started blogging about early last month, (see here for full film schedule in my earlier post) to inform everyone that there would be five (5) successive Friday Nights in the 2010 Season.

This has been the BEST Season that Tina and I have attended so far, IMO. For those of YOU that are relatively close to Coastal North San Diego County and haven't attended one of these evenings yet, I suggest you read this blog and the others I have posted through the years, and then plan to attend the 2011 Film Festival!

Here are just a few of the hi-lites for me and Tina from this 5th & Final Night:

First, I want to mention that it was Hot Dog Night Under the Stars!

The crew grilling the hot dogs, (some who are shown at the top right of this blog), did a great job, AND sold of of them at intermission time!

I had a Conquistador at the start of the show, and then three regular hot dogs during the rest of the show.

AND they went great with the bottle of wine that Tina chose to bring along!

We met up with some of our church friends, who were there for the first night and then the last night of the 2010 Film Season.  Nice to see some new people there, including Armando Carrillo and his wife Louise.

And NO, Armando says he isn't directly related to Leo's family, even though he asked for a 'Family Discount, LOL!

Pictured L-R are: Rev. Diana Swenson, Dick Swenson, Louise Carrillo, and Armando Carrillo.  Not pictured to the far left is Tina, to whom Diana is talking to.

I also met Ron Bykowski again, who is the Docent that we usually see when we take friends or family to the Leo Carrillo Ranch on weekends. Ron is pictured to the top right in the photo section of this blog.

Again, I want to mention the NEW Exhibit, that just previewed two weeks ago, curated by my Facebook Friend, Gerry Streff. See the last blog on the Ranch by clicking here for more photos of this excellent exhibit.

Thanks again Gerry, for showing me the hi-lites of the exhibit that week!

AND if YOU haven't seen this New Exhibit, check it out! You will need to attend with a docent tour, so be aware of the hours of the two tours...

I've already shown the Grand Prize for the 'Opportunity Drawing', but the other two prizes were worthwhile also!

To the left is the 2nd Prize, which was the book that Leo CArrillo wrote, 'The California I Love'.  You can pick this up at the Gift Store at the front of the Ranch, if YOU haven't read it before!

And no, we don't have any copies to sell in our online store, although that is a thought...It could go along with the Cisco Kid Comic Books that we buy and sell...!

Oh, and we didn't win this time in the 'Opportunity Drawing'.  However Tina won a prize in the  'Trivia Game' that was played.  See her prize in the photo section at the top right of this blog post.  She was kind enough to share some of the prize with me!  Thanks, Tina!

I have to admit...The 'Opportunity Drawing' prizes keep getting better every season!  And I enjoyed winning mine the 1st Night of the Season!  If YOU didn't see that blog post...We had a great dinner using the fixings in the 2nd Prize Package from Cheri's Desert Harvest!

Now I want to mention Charles Balteria, who is the face and voice of this Leo Carrillo Film Festival for those that attend.

I've mentioned Charles before, but to the left is another photo from Friday night.

He is a great host, as are all the others on staff from the City of Carlsbad, as well as the Volunteers that greet you at the parking lot and guide you to where the Film Festival is below!

Charles introduces the Cisco Kid TV Show episode that is shown first.  He also runs the intermission break, while additional 'Opportunity Drawing' tickets are sold.

Plus he introduces the Feature Film of the Night. Great job each season, Charles!

BTW, the Cisco Kid episode on Friday Night was titled 'Haven For Heavies' - (TV episode 1951 #1.20).  I kept looking at the female lead in the episode, and did she look familar, even though she was in western garb!  Turned out she was Phyllis Coates...YES, That Phyllis Coates!

Phyllis was 'Lois Lane' in 24 episodes of the "Adventures of Superman' back in 1952-53!  Another comic book tie-in for me!

Oh, and I was going to post a photo of the screen credits showing her in it, but I reached my camera too late to get a shot of her being listed in it...

Also, when researching for this blog post...I found that Phyllis was actually in four (4) episodes of the Cisco Kid TV Show!

Now here's what the City of Carlsbad and the Friends of Leo Carrillo Ranch, Inc. showed last night as the Fifth & Final Film in the 2010 Leo Carrillo Film Festival:

•Sept. 24 – Honululu Lu (1940) run time: 70 minutes.  Upon arriving in Hawaii with Don Esteban Cordoba (Leo Carrillo), Consuelo Cordoba (Lupe Velez) finds herslef in a risque nighclub and due to her involvement with a group of sailors has a chance to become a beauty queen.  Starring: Leo Carrillo, Lupe Velez and Bruce Bennett.

I found this film to be really funny, which was probably the intent when it was first released in 1940.  The USA was still in the Great Depression era, and there was a War going on elsewhere.

The USA had not yet entered WWII, and probably most on the Mainland thought that Hawaii was a far away country!

Lupe Velez was OUTSTANDING in this role!

Plus Leo was actually a full co-star in this film.  Very good role for him.  He was definitely a good looking man, and this film showed him as a ladies man!

This was a good film to end the 2010 Leo Carrillo Film Festival with!

BTW, all of the films that Leo Carrillo was in were in black & white, EXCEPT for one.  Do YOU know which one that was??!! Answer at the end of this blog post.  And that is what Tina guessed right and won her 'prize'!

I shot 111 photos last night, so if you were there and are not pictured, that's why!  Even though I am somewhat 'talkative' in this blog, there isn't enough room to show them in all in one blog post!

Which is why I run additional blog posts on the Leo Carrillo Ranch during the off-season of the Leo Carrillo Film Festival. As you can see by this link, I've blogged a lot about this historical place and the Film Festival.

BTW, if you don't know...I also blog about this Film Festival every year because there is a comic book connection as well!

There were 40 issues of the Cisco Kid comic book title from Dell Comics, starting in January of 1951 and ending with the Oct/Dec 1958 issue!  Here's a link to all of those covers!

PLUS: Here's a link to the blog posts that we've blogged about in the past to show you what's at the Leo Carrillo Ranch, as well as what fun we had at the Leo Carrillo Film Festival in recent years:  Click here for the link!

Our thanks again to the City of Carlsbad, and to the LeoCarrilloRanch.org people. Plus Gerry Streff for personally explaining the exhibit she curated as mentioned in this blog and the latest ones!

Plus the Friends Of CarrilloRanch.org folks for making the Ranch Docent Tours and the Film Festival possible this year!  Yeah, I'm more excited that this place is in the City of Carlsbad, then I am about LegoLand being nearby!

Oh...We don't have any Cisco Kid DVDs for sale in our online store, (we are keeping ours for our own collection!), but here's a link to one of the better Cisco Kid Collections! Best of The Cisco Kid (35 Episodes)

And I still make this offer...If YOU are attending during any season, and see Tina and myself there...Stop by and say hello!  I'm usually wearing my straw hat and wearing one of my 'Comic Book Collectors Blog.com' indigo colored polo shirts to these events, (as seen at the top left photo of this post)!

PLUS...My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts, now over the 3,240 total posts in number! I do appreciate your continued reading and support of this Blog!

BTW, You can 'follow' this Blog by clicking the 'Follow' Button at this NetworkedBlogs app!  I would appreciate that!!

And here's the Answer to the Trivia Question above...The ONLY color film that Leo Carrillo was in was....(drum roll please)...Phantom of the Opera! The 1943 remake! Which was shown during the 2009 Leo Carrillo Film Festival!  Congrats again to Tina LoSasso for winning the prize for that Trivia Question at the Final Night of the Film Festival!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3235 -(Reposted):

Last night Tina and I once again joined a few of our neighbors at the 3rd Night of the 2010 Leo Carrillo Film Festival.

This is the same Film Festival I blogged about a couple of weeks ago about the Festival Season arriving soon, (see here for full film schedule in my earlier post). So Yes...It's THAT TIME of Year Again for those that are relatively close to Coastal North San Diego County to attend this Film Festival!

Because I have taken on a project that is keeping me away from the home office during the day for the rest of this month, Tina arrived early with the neighbors to save us a spot in the main section of the film area!

Unfortunately, even though they were there early, the front section was already full for those with high back chairs like our group had!  So it was to front of the back section for them!

If YOU go to one of the remaining two nights, please be advised that it's first come...first takers of the grounds area. Note: Only low back chairs are permitted up in front of the front section.  So get there early if you don't have those size of chairs!

Plus when I arrived there at 6:12 PM, there were only 4 car spaces on the parking lot section.  When we left for the night, I noticed that the grounds area in the dirt, with no lights had been used for additional parking.  So again, if YOU are attending, get there early!

As I mentioned in last week's blog, this week was going to be 'Hot Dog Week' at the Cabana where they serve the food, drinks, and snacks!

I took a photo of the menus so you can see what what offered.  Because the 'Hot Dog Night' went over so well, the staff is going to have 'Hot Dog Night' NEXT Week also for the 4th Night of the Festival!

Last week there was a 'Trivia Game'. This week there wasn't. However there a new 'Opportunity Drawing', which I played again in support of the Ranch.

The three 'Opportunity Drawing' prizes looked pretty good again, so I opted to take photos of all three.

Plus I had to bring Tina over to the Prize Table to show here the Barn Owl Hand Puppet.  That's because we know there is a barn owl on the Ranch Grounds, which is very hard to find at times. It hides very well during the day!

Definitely not as easy to find as the white peacock, which is a rarity in the wild, and very popular with guests to the Ranch!

As mentioned before in this blog, Tina loves to look for that white peacock that roams the grounds with the other peacocks.  You can walk the grounds befor the film starts if you arrive early enough, or take a shortened docent tour of the Hacienda only also.

If YOU haven't taken in a full docent tour of the grounds on Saturday or Sunday yet...You are missing a great tour!

I'm going to skip showing the 2nd Runner Up Prize, bu to the the left was last night's Grand Prize...Which included a Cisco Kid Episode Guide!

Again, for those of YOU that haven't been to this Leo Carrillo Film Festival, here's what happens per the publicity info:

Nostalgic entertainment under the stars at a real movie star retreat.  Admission is free.  Movies start promptly at sunset.  Grounds open at 5 p.m. for picnics and tours.  Complementary tour of the hacienda is offered one hour before sunset.

Guests should bring low-back chairs, blankets, and a flashlight.  Warm clothes and appropriate shoes are recommended for uneven terrain throughout the park.  An episode of “The Cisco Kid” precedes the film screening.  Films are not rated.  Parental discretion is advised.  Closed captioning is not available unless otherwise indicated.

Now here's what the City of Carlsbad and the Friends of Leo Carrillo Ranch, Inc. showed last night as the third film in the 2010 Leo Carrillo Film Festival:

•Sept. 10 – Sin Town (1942) run time: 73 minutes.  After being conned himself into buying a bunch of dry oil wells, conman Duke decides to lead the town's businessmen in an effort to take the law into their own hands.  When his plan backfires, Duke finds himself at the mercy of the town.  Starring: Leo Carrillo, Constance Bennett, and Broderick Crawford.

I found this film to a good character study of the main characters in the film, as well as having some action sequences.

Broderick Crawford was outstanding in his role as 'Dude McNair', and Constance Bennett played a great role as 'Kye Allen'.

I really enjoyed seeing Ward Bond, (I enjoyed Wagon Train because of him!), as 'Rock Delaney' in this film, although you couldn't tell from the film poster that he was in it!

Leo played an Italian con man...good role there!

And a standout as 'Laura Kirby', was Anne Gwynne, as seen to the left in a Scene Card!

The film, although another short one at 73 minutes, was a good film to see under the stars at the Leo Carrillo Film Festival!

(For those of you reading this, and thinking that it would be cool to attend next week's Film Festival...Here's what is scheduled for next week:

•Sept. 17 – Lillian Russell (1940) run time; 127 minutes.  Closed captioning will be available for this film.

A musical biopic of the legendary 19th century musical comedy star.  Discovered in 1880 by bandleader Tony Pastor (Leo Carrillo), Lillian Russell (Alice Faye) wastes no time rising to fame and fortune on the Broadway stage as well as attracting a flurry of eligible bachelors.

Starring: Leo Carrillo, Alice Faye and Don Ameche.

That looks to be a good film to watch under the star next week!

PLUS: What would the Leo Carrillo Film Festival be without an episode of The Cisco Kid from the TV Series that had an original run from September 5, 1950 – March 22, 1956?!

The episode that was shown last night was 'The Will', which was pretty suspensful for a half-hour show!  We enjoyed this one, although the shooting from horseback wasn't too straight!

As I mentioned in last week's blog...This is the 6th Season of the Leo Carrillo Film Festival!  Plus I had suggested getting there early for the Opening of the New Exhibit that was Previewed the Night before to invitees only for a private party.

The crowd was a large one, about the size of this year's Opening Night, and I, as others made their way to check out the New Exhibit also!

I posted a note about this in last week's blog, but want to mention it again, as it Big News for the Ranch.  Two weeks ago, I was contacted by a Facebook Friend, Gerry Streff, an archivist with the the City of Carlsbad, who after seeing my earlier Thursday blog post about this year's Film Season, sent me the following link.  There will be a Special Exhibit that opens to the general public on the Friday Night of September 10th, which coincides with that night's Film Festival.

Well, I am pleased to see that Gerry' Exhibit is OUTSTANDING!  Yeah, I know...I teased all of you with photos of the exhibits at the top of this blog post, and didn't get to talking about it until here...but I wanted to 'tease' you into going to seeing this great exhibit yourself!

I shot 131 photos last night, most were on items in the exhibit, it is that good! Kudos to Gerry for Exhibit Writing and Curating this Event!

I suggest highly that YOU attend this Exhibit also, which is only open for docent tours hours. Please contact the folks that handle that for days & hours.  And even better, the tours are FREE!

I'll be posting more pics from this Exhibit, which is titled - 'Leo Carrillo: His Life and Legacy' in the weeks to follow, for those of YOU that are too far away to visit right now...!

So to finish up blogging about last night's 3rd Night of the 2010 Leo Carrillo Film Festival...The audience was as large in numbers as Opening Night.  The staff working the event were friendly as always, and the 'Hot Dog Night' was a great sucess...Enough to have it again Next Week!  The Cisco Kid episode was a good one with both action and storyline, and gave those who were new to the Festival last night a taste of that TV series.

Add to that the Opportunity Drawing Prizes given away at intermission were really good prizes once again! And the character study / action film that was shown...Made it a Great 3rd Night at this year's Film Festival! My thanks again to all of those involved with having this Film Season continue.  There were several hundred folks there last night that appreciated it!

BTW, if you don't know...I blog about this Film Festival every year because there is a comic book connection as well!

Thanks again to the City of Carlsbad, and to the LeoCarrilloRanch.org people. Plus Gerry Streff for personally explaining the exhibit she curated!

And I still make this offer...If YOU are attending and see Tina and myself there...Stop by and say hello!  I'm usually wearing my straw hat and wearing one of my 'Comic Book Collectors Blog.com' indigo colored polo shirts to these events, (as seen at the top left photo of this post)!

PLUS...My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts, now over the 3,230 total posts in number! I do appreciate your continued reading and support of this Blog!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3241 (repost of Blog 3219):

The past few weeks I received a few emails inviting me to set up as a dealer at a brand new Collector Con in Oceanside, California...

I haven't set up at a 'live' show for a while, so I wasn't ready to accept the invitations at that time.

However, I did make a note on my calendar to check out the show this past Saturday.  So this is a 'report' as to what I found at this 'Collector Con'.  I am taking into consideration that it is a brand new show...

My first thought after googling the location was that it was at a swap meet location. And that it would be indoors. Possibly similar to the Rose Bowl Collectors Show that started last year?

Driving there, I found that this Collector Con was at an abandoned drive-in theater that is now a swap meet location.

There weren't many cars or trucks turning into the side street, and at first I thought I had the wrong entrance...

I continued on into the drive, and found that there were several vehichles parked.  This was approximately 10 AM on Saturday.

I know that swap meets are for early birds, but as this was a 'Collector Con', and brand new at that, I didn't want to arrive too early, allowing the promoters and the exhibitors time to get the opening day 'kinks' out of the way.

The line to get in to the area was a slow one...only one ticket seller.  Although it only cost $1 to get into the main area, it took quite a while for the ticket seller to make change and distribute the ticket to get in.

While I was standing there with many others, 'Deadpool' came walking out of the exit gate, (as pictured at the above left), so it gave me hope that there was a good attendance.  As it was already getting warm, I figured that the costumed character was cutting out for the day.  Which was right, as I never him again...

I then realized that the 'Collector Con' area was separate from the rest of the swap meet, and possibly from the 'farmers market', although I never did go to that part of the old drive in location.  The 'Collector Con' area was plainly marked, see the top right photo of this blog.

I immediately spotted Raven White of Retro Entertainment Services as I came through the entrance.  He has a lot of collector-to-collector DVDs for sale, and I see him and heather at almost every pop culutre and comic con that I attend.  So immediately I thought that this show had some potential.

Other booths were set up, and I went in a systematic order through the aisles.  Again, I had thought this would be 'under cover' in a hall of some sort, and it appears that a few vendors there thought the same thing, as several did not have tents with poles covering them or their goods for sale.

I got sunburned in just the four hours I was out there, so I'm sure that a few of the vendors did also...

Also to the left as I entered the 'Collector Con' area was the Yu-gi-Oh! Tournament area, sponsored by Ryan's Comics, as pictured near the top right of this blog.  I had tried to meet him a few times a couple of Summers ago when he was first setting up his new shop in Murietta.  So I thought it was strange that he was there, as Murietta is about 34 miles / 45 minutes away, and in Riverside County.

But then again, there was also a 'neighbor' of his that also had a booth there at 'Collector Con'.  That would be 'Thou Shalt Game Entertainment' in Temecula, California.  Which is 30 miles away.

So there were a few vendors from outside the immediate area that came to set up.

As well as Upton & Son who came from San Diego, and the before mentioned Raven White & Heather from the Escondido area.  Oh, and Southern California Comics' Jon Bolerjak was also there with a booth representing the shop!

In addition to those vendors, there were also individual persons who were there to sell their personal collections such as Jason Harris, shown to the left, who I knew as the LCBS Manager at the old 'Comic Gallery' in Mira Mesa, which closed several years ago.  Thanks again, Jason for the great deals on Saturday! And good luck on move!

That would be about it for the 'Collector Con' part of the show. I saw that there was the wrestling area which was placed far enough way from the vendor booths to keep the noise down.

So I walked over there to see what was going on before walking the booths one more time to look for any deals.

There I met Deanna Carpinelli, mother of the Carpinelli Brothers, who were the promoters of 'Collector Con'.  She explained that the 'Lucha Libre' Pro Wrestling was an additional charge, and I explained to her that I was there to blog about the 1st time show and that I was possibly interested in setting up a booth at a later date.

Thus I was able to take a couple of pics of the action, which also was under the sun, which by now was kind of hitting the asphalt of the surrounding area, and heating up the entire area.

There was some action going on, but I was just there to check out what was also part of the promotional flyer's attractions.

I made a final pass of the booths that were still open, (it was almost 2PM), and made a few last minute purchases on the way out, while talking again to vendors and individuals that I had met on the way through the aisles.

There wasn't a real consensus as to how successful this 1st show was by those that were selling there.

The regular vendors who had shops of their own were glad for the exposure in San Diego North County, as there are very few shops in the North County serving the population.

Which is why I'm hoping that this 'Collector Con' will build in size.  Comic Gallery closed its Escondio shop a couple of years ago, Grand Avenue Book Shop is gone, and there are only two LCBS near me in Carlsbad.  Plus 1 1/2 in the Oceanside area itself. There's another in the Vista area, but it is more of a game shop than comics.  They were also there matter of fact, at this Collector Con with a booth. .

So there is a need for this type of show in North County.  However the location is in the low lying inland valley, which is probably why the old drive-in was named 'Valley Drive-In'!

If You are thinking of attending, bring sun-screen, and loose clothing, and a hat!  There is a food vendor there if you stay longer than you thought you would!

I made some good purchases from the sellers on Saturday, possibly because I was back for the 2nd time, after scouting what was out there, and it was close to closing time, with a few booths already closing at 2PM.

So I would suggest that if your are in North County San Diego area, to check this 'Collector Con' out on September 25th when it is running again. As an attendee, until you scope it out for yourself.  Again, there were a few individuals that were selling their own collections or duplicates, so this could be an avenue for you in the future if you live in the area.

I don't think we will be setting up there for a while, as we would have to rent a tent as well as a space, plus tables.  So the set up cost for us would be more.  Plus I no longer have a truck to carry the inventory, and set up equipment. Fabiano Carpinelli did tell me that they do rent the tents, and that we would have to set them up in the morning.  There was the fact that the breakdown would be their people doing it though...

I'm not going to give this 1st show a comic book grade at this time.  I'll wait and see after one or two more shows to do so...

Again, the next 'Collector Con' is September 25th of 2010.  You can keep up to date with this show at their Facebook Fan Page.

My thanks to Fabiano Carpinelli for the information about the show when I first arrived, and to Deanna Carpinelli who was also informative near the end of the show for me!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3240:

Today's post is the 1st Review on any publications that I found at the recent SGV Comic Book Festival that took place on Sunday, September 19th!

I thought I would start with Rafael Navarro's 1st mini-series that was compiled into a TPB, and that is listed for sale at his web site. More on that at the end of this review...

Here is what I found about the series, after reading the TPB. This was from the Wikipedia entry:

"Sonámbulo (Sleepwalker) is a fictional character from the American independent comic book series of the same name created by Rafael Navarro. The character made his first public debut in Sonambulo: Sleep of the Just, the first of the on-going series in 1996. The story follows the eponymous character, who in the '50s became a successful luchador. Due to his rise in fame, Sonámbulo was approached by the local Mafia with the intent of extorting money from him and other special services. Around the same time, the masked-wrestler was plagued by a strange sleeping disorder. Upon refusing the gangsters demands, he was brutally beaten, shot, and left for dead. Instead of dying however, Sonambulo fell in to a deep hibernation only to awake decades later, having the power to see other people's dreams and having the uncanny ability to go without sleep. Using his new-found powers, Sonámbulo becomes a private detective against the supernatural underworld of the night. All of the collected stories following the character feature some surreal dream-like quality, keeping with the theme of sleep."

Even though I had not read the above, before reading the TPB, I had gathered some of the above knowledge while talking with the creator, Rafael Navarro.

The reason I am moving this review blog up in the stacks to post first is that I had met Rafael briefly at a different con in July, (the SDCC), when he stopped by a booth I was visiting. (Gumby booth.) I never did make it to his book at the other con, so when I arrived at the SGV he made sure that I stopped at his SGV Table.  I'm glad he took the time to let me know he was there!  Here's why, as you'll see in my review that starts next...

Here is 'My Take' on the TPB compilation of the collected mini-series:

Front Cover - I'm taking into consideration that this is a TPB compilation of the earlier 3 comic books with different covers.  This cover for the TPB really invites you as a casual browser at a book store or at a LCBS to stop, pick it up, and thumb through it. Good presentation of what is inside and is a true representation of the storyline as well...

The first few pages are designed to give you the 'tone' of the TPB. Black & white images along with the credits page, and a Table of Contents. PLUS a Foreword / Introduction by David J Schow.  After all of that, I was ready to read the first chapter, (issue).

I found that the artwork was familar to me, when I first thumbed through the TPB at the SGV table.  I asked Rafael who he would list as his influences.  He named Jack Kirby, Alex Toth, and Frank Robbins.

I noticed the Frank Robbins influence right away, and then the Alex Toth.  I also saw some George Tuska influences there.  Which is All Good in my reading preferences!

Not that Rafael didn't make this artwork his own, but it is good to see such Great Masters influences live on!

The black and white interior pages helped set the mood for the chapters.  I found myself reading this TPB rather quickly, because I couldn't put it down for long!

I'm not going to give away more than what was given away in the promo blurb from Wikipedia above, other than to say that this storyline all made sense to me!

Well written, good dialogue, and intriguing artwork were found in the pages of this TPB!

Plus there was a Bonus Section! The early stages of development of this character in 1996. The pages were interesting to read, and the illustrations showed the beginnings of this character.  Excellent 'Bonus' Section here!

You know, I had not heard of this series before the SGV Comic Book Festival.  I understood that Rafael had something to do with a Gumby series from my meeting him at the San Diego Comic Con International.

But this Sonambulo that started back in 1996 (!) is a far cry from that!  My wife Tina, says that is a sign of a true artist, one that can work in different genres easily and do well in them.  I'm looking forward to reading and viewing more of Sonambulo in the near future!

My comic book grade for this TPB publication is a NEAR MINT, (NM) 9.4 on a 10.0 grading scale. That is the highest I grade any comic book / graphic novel / TPB.

Okay...I promised to let you know where YOU can buy this TPB I just reviewed above!

Here is the link to the Sonambulo TPB and other publications that Rafael has published on this character. Plus other tie-in materials!

Plus, YOU can also meet him at the Long Beach Comic Con in October, if you are planning to take that comic con in!

---------------------------

Thanks again, Rafael, for sharing your time with me at the recent San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Festival!

PLUS: My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts, now over 3,235 total posts in number! I do appreciate your continued reading and support of this Blog!
