TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3236:

I've already mentioned that one of the great pleasures I receive at visiting comic-cons, no matter what the size of them, is visiting the sections named 'Artists Alley', and 'Small Press' or 'Indy Aisles'.

It's even better when I find a comic book that my youngest son can also enjoy, as so many comics today are not aimed at his age group. This is Vinnie's 'Take' on a promotional comic magazine that we found at the SDCC in July.

------------------------

While at the San Diego Comic Con International, my dad and I went through the Small Press Pavillion and Artist Alley.

While there, he picked up some comics, magazines, and all sorts of things for possible review, and this happened to be one of them. The title of this comic book is "Physics Quest 2008: Nikola Tesla and the Electric Fair." It is a "promotional comic book," although, it is the size of a Magazine.

The sponsors of this comic book are the American Physical Society. Their website is www.aps.org. You can even download this comic at www.physicscentral.com/physicsquest. We talked to the creators, who also did the promotional comic "Spectra #1," which my dad blogged about, and can be found here.

This book was very interesting, and I feel it would be a great study tool, as it is probably more interesting to read this, than a chapter from a textbook. Now to go more "in-depth."

Front Cover - It shows most of the main characters; Nikola Testla, Thomas Alva Edison, "Mark Twain", and George Westinghouse Jr. For the background, it has a flash of electricity or lightning, whichever it may be, and a tower. I feel both tie up the picture nicely.

Inside Front Cover - It shows the sponsor's title and logo. It also states their website and address, as well as the website to download this comic for free (which I mentioned above). I feel it is nice they allow you to download a copy of this for free, as this is a promotional comic after all.

Splash Page - States the title, and credits for who did what. All the people mentioned who helped with the production of this are Rebecca Thompson-Flagg, Christopher DiScenza, Justin Reeder, Kerry G Johnson, and Alan Chados. It again states the website, and in fine print, says this comic is copyrighted.

Interior Pages - The first page has an "About the Comic Book" page as well as the bibliography for their research on Nikola Tesla. The second page is an informant about Nikola, telling about his life. The third page has a picture of Tesla reading a book in front of his spiral-coiled tranformer. The fourth page and onward contains the story and art, which are both great. They presented it in a way a kid might enjoy reading it, which may be the reason I enjoyed it so much. In the way the pages are numbered, the Splash Page is Page 1, meaning a total of 12. The actual comic is only 8 pages, however, making it a quick read, which is probably why it works as a promotional comic book.

Inside Back Cover - The Inside Back Cover is blank, so I don't really have much to say about it.

Back Cover - It has a picture of Tesla, and basically uses the same words used in the "About Nikola Tesla" page to "summarize" it. It was almost as though someone "cut-and-pasted" the more interesting parts from it onto the back cover. This part wasn't as impressive, but it was fine if someone was to read that to see what it's about, and if they wanted to pick it up or not.

Storyline - The way they put it all together made it seem as though tis was the only event in his life, although they made "quick facts" about current topics on most pages.

To summarize this all, it was a great read, had wonderful art, and was presented in a way children could enjoy it, making it a great study tool. This is great if you are having a test or something related to a test about Nikola Tesla, or even electricity in general, as this gave information about currents and even has a graph of how two kinds of currents work. This would also make a good gift for someone interested in science or electricity, or have Tesla as a "rolemodel" of sorts. This is even good if you want to "spark" you or a friend's interest in science, as I can almost guarentee this is much more fun than reading from a textbook.

I give this a Comic Book Grade of Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 scale.

Vinnie!

----------------------

Thanks Vinnie for guest blogging here today, and giving us your thoughts on this promotional comic book magazine from a tween's POV!

Again, my thanks to Rebecca Thompson-Flagg and Kerry G Johnson for introducing this promotional comic book to us at this year's San Diego Comic Con International!  Looks like Vinnie enjoyed this as much as I did your Spectra #1 promotional comic book!

Besides the web links that Vinnie mentioned above...The APS web site is at:  APS.org for more info. Just type in 'Physics Quest' or 'Spectra comic' in the search bar on the portal page to see what links they have to stories about the creators and the comic books produced so far.

BTW, If you liked Vinnie's 'Take' on this promotional comic book magazine, he's also review blogged several other publications so far this year.

Including the graphic novel as shown to the left.  Here's his review blog on this publication: Vinnie's Take on Berona's War: Field Guide.  After reading that and thinking that this is something YOU would like to read or give as a gift, here's a link to where you can purchase it online! Berona's War: Field Guide!

Also...If YOU liked his review on this publication today, you may enjoy reading Vinnie's reviews on: Clutch Cargo, The All New Super Friends Hour Season 1 DVDThe Ultimate Underdog Collection Volume 1Planet HulkCoraline, Ponyo, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Sonic the Hedgehog TPB Vol 1, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, just to name a recent few!!!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3236:

This weekend was really busy for me, so my youngest son Vinnie has taken over the blogging for the next couple of days. Today's blog is rather timely in rememberance of this past Saturday's events held in memory of those that died in the attack, and the aftermath of the clean-up...

------------------------

"I was over at my dad's and Tina's house this weekend when I heard on the news that Saturday was 9/11's 9th Anniversary.

After formatting my newest review blog that will now be posted tomorrow, Tuesday, Tina was telling me more about 9/11, as I had known next to nothing about it, except that it happened.

She was also translating what the Fox TV Special was saying in a way I could understand it better.

You see, I was only 3 or 4 and in preschool when it happened, so I was too young to remember it happening and none of my schools ever said anything about this event so I was just about clueless.

On Sunday morning, my dad presented me with a comic book magazine titled "Heroes." On the bottom portion of the cover it said, "The World's Greatest Super Hero Creators Honor The World's Greatest Heroes 9 - 11 - 2001."

I was intrigued with the title as I didn't quite understand what it meant, so I read it and looked at each page. The art that was in it, the messages some people wrote, just everything; it all brought a tear to my eye. You can tell that everyone was sincere in what they wrote, and put much thought and love into each illustration.

Although I have no memory of this event, my older sister told me that on this day, when I came home from preschool, I was holding a drawing of the American Flag that was poorly drawn, (as I drew it with my preschool drawing skills), and repeatedly chanted while running through the house, "I love this Country," and, "I love the USA."

Although I enjoyed all of the pages, there were certain ones that really struck me. Those ones were pages 2, 6, 13, 16, 28, and 30 & 35.

Pages 30 and 35 are all one drawing, but were seperated by 5 pages. Now to tell about each page.

The second page is by George Peréz and Tom Smith. This page has a drawing of The American Flag hanging down. On each stripe is a firefighter, police officer, EMT or something relative to that. Everyone is crying, and at the end of each stripe is a candle.

The sixth page was done by Sal Velluto, Bob Almond, and Chris Dickey. This page has a picture of a girl and a boy dressed as a police officer and a firefighter. They are both holding dolls, and are standing in a bedroom filled with comic related items such as posters, action figures, and comics. While standing there, they are peering out of the window, and you can see a lot of smoke.

The 13th page was done by Carlos Pacheco, Jesús Merino, and Tom Smith, and the text was done by Kurt Busiek. In the background it shows several super heroes holding candles, and it is slightly faded. In the foreground there are several men trying to rescue a man from the debris of this building. The text is a story of these Super Heroes helping rescue people.

The 16th page was done by John Romita Sr. and Udon Studios. It depicts a young girl sitting on the lap of what appears to be her mother; both look incredibly sad. Closer up is a dresser, with a picture of a man in a police officer uniform. Behind the girl and her mother is a window, and out of that you see all the smoke from the towers crashing.

The 28th Page is by Walter Simonson and the text is by Paul Dini. It has a picture of a Police Officer and a Firefighter standing behind the shadow of the Twin Towers. The text is really what got me here. It was quite a long story that I felt was incredibly accurate. It went something along the lines of when you're a child, you dream to be a Police Officer or Firefighter, and have extreme respect for them, but when you grow up, you simply think of the Police Officer a nuisance when he appears when you are cruising 20 miles over the limit and gives you a ticket. You then smugly refer to him as 'cop.' You may also think the Firefighter to be a nuisance as well when he makes you pull over to the side of the road to let his noisy truck pass by when your running late. But then, on September 11, 2001, you suddenly became a kid again, with great respect for these people who risked their lives. This was definitely my favorite page of the 64 total.

The 30th and 35th page was drawn by David Mack. It shows a diagram of a hero. It is in the shadow of a firefighter. The way it was drawn was as if a kid sketched it out. It also showed a diagram of their brain, and heart, which were something along the lines of one section was bravery, the other love, and duty and et cetera.

This whole book was a treaure to read and look at and was very inspirational. I know I won't look at Police Officers and Firefighters the same way again.

Nine years after it happened, I now know what occurred.  Thanks to Tina & Fox News; plus my dad & Marvel Comics for giving me a better understanding of what happened that day."

----------------------

Thanks Vinnie for guest blogging here today.  I'm glad that the sources you cited above gave you a better understanding of that day's events...

Like it's been said before, a picture is worth a thousand words, and both Fox News & Marvel Comics gave us a lot of pictures in coverage on this day that needs to be understood by all in this great country of ours...

Michael

BTW, If you liked Vinnie's thoughts and semi-review on this commemorative comic book magazine shown above, and want to share it with your kids, here's another link to additional copies in case we are out of stock of this comic book magazine when you read this blog post: Heroes : The World's Greatest Super Hero Creators Honor the World's Greatest Heroes 9-11-2001 : Vol. 1 No. 1 December 2001.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3235:

Last night Tina and I once again joined a few of our neighbors at the 3rd Night of the 2010 Leo Carrillo Film Festival.

This is the same Film Festival I blogged about a couple of weeks ago about the Festival Season arriving soon, (see here for full film schedule in my earlier post). So Yes...It's THAT TIME of Year Again for those that are relatively close to Coastal North San Diego County to attend this Film Festival!

Because I have taken on a project that is keeping me away from the home office during the day for the rest of this month, Tina arrived early with the neighbors to save us a spot in the main section of the film area!

Unfortunately, even though they were there early, the front section was already full for those with high back chairs like our group had!  So it was to front of the back section for them!

If YOU go to one of the remaining two nights, please be advised that it's first come...first takers of the grounds area. Note: Only low back chairs are permitted up in front of the front section.  So get there early if you don't have those size of chairs!

Plus when I arrived there at 6:12 PM, there were only 4 car spaces on the parking lot section.  When we left for the night, I noticed that the grounds area in the dirt, with no lights had been used for additional parking.  So again, if YOU are attending, get there early!

As I mentioned in last week's blog, this week was going to be 'Hot Dog Week' at the Cabana where they serve the food, drinks, and snacks!

I took a photo of the menus so you can see what what offered.  Because the 'Hot Dog Night' went over so well, the staff is going to have 'Hot Dog Night' NEXT Week also for the 4th Night of the Festival!

Last week there was a 'Trivia Game'. This week there wasn't. However there a new 'Opportunity Drawing', which I played again in support of the Ranch.

The three 'Opportunity Drawing' prizes looked pretty good again, so I opted to take photos of all three.

Plus I had to bring Tina over to the Prize Table to show here the Barn Owl Hand Puppet.  That's because we know there is a barn owl on the Ranch Grounds, which is very hard to find at times. It hides very well during the day!

Definitely not as easy to find as the white peacock, which is a rarity in the wild, and very popular with guests to the Ranch!

As mentioned before in this blog, Tina loves to look for that white peacock that roams the grounds with the other peacocks.  You can walk the grounds befor the film starts if you arrive early enough, or take a shortened docent tour of the Hacienda only also.

If YOU haven't taken in a full docent tour of the grounds on Saturday or Sunday yet...You are missing a great tour!

I'm going to skip showing the 2nd Runner Up Prize, bu to the the left was last night's Grand Prize...Which included a Cisco Kid Episode Guide!

Again, for those of YOU that haven't been to this Leo Carrillo Film Festival, here's what happens per the publicity info:

Nostalgic entertainment under the stars at a real movie star retreat.  Admission is free.  Movies start promptly at sunset.  Grounds open at 5 p.m. for picnics and tours.  Complementary tour of the hacienda is offered one hour before sunset.

Guests should bring low-back chairs, blankets, and a flashlight.  Warm clothes and appropriate shoes are recommended for uneven terrain throughout the park.  An episode of “The Cisco Kid” precedes the film screening.  Films are not rated.  Parental discretion is advised.  Closed captioning is not available unless otherwise indicated.

Now here's what the City of Carlsbad and the Friends of Leo Carrillo Ranch, Inc. showed last night as the third film in the 2010 Leo Carrillo Film Festival:

•Sept. 10 – Sin Town (1942) run time: 73 minutes.  After being conned himself into buying a bunch of dry oil wells, conman Duke decides to lead the town's businessmen in an effort to take the law into their own hands.  When his plan backfires, Duke finds himself at the mercy of the town.  Starring: Leo Carrillo, Constance Bennett, and Broderick Crawford.

I found this film to a good character study of the main characters in the film, as well as having some action sequences.

Broderick Crawford was outstanding in his role as 'Dude McNair', and Constance Bennett played a great role as 'Kye Allen'.

I really enjoyed seeing Ward Bond, (I enjoyed Wagon Train because of him!), as 'Rock Delaney' in this film, although you couldn't tell from the film poster that he was in it!

Leo played an Italian con man...good role there!

And a standout as 'Laura Kirby', was Anne Gwynne, as seen to the left in a Scene Card!

The film, although another short one at 73 minutes, was a good film to see under the stars at the Leo Carrillo Film Festival!

(For those of you reading this, and thinking that it would be cool to attend next week's Film Festival...Here's what is scheduled for next week:

•Sept. 17 – Lillian Russell (1940) run time; 127 minutes.  Closed captioning will be available for this film.

A musical biopic of the legendary 19th century musical comedy star.  Discovered in 1880 by bandleader Tony Pastor (Leo Carrillo), Lillian Russell (Alice Faye) wastes no time rising to fame and fortune on the Broadway stage as well as attracting a flurry of eligible bachelors.

Starring: Leo Carrillo, Alice Faye and Don Ameche.

That looks to be a good film to watch under the star next week!

PLUS: What would the Leo Carrillo Film Festival be without an episode of The Cisco Kid from the TV Series that had an original run from September 5, 1950 – March 22, 1956?!

The episode that was shown last night was 'The Will', which was pretty suspensful for a half-hour show!  We enjoyed this one, although the shooting from horseback wasn't too straight!

As I mentioned in last week's blog...This is the 6th Season of the Leo Carrillo Film Festival!  Plus I had suggested getting there early for the Opening of the New Exhibit that was Previewed the Night before to invitees only for a private party.

The crowd was a large one, about the size of this year's Opening Night, and I, as others made their way to check out the New Exhibit also!

I posted a note about this in last week's blog, but want to mention it again, as it Big News for the Ranch.  Two weeks ago, I was contacted by a Facebook Friend, Gerry Streff, an archivist with the the City of Carlsbad, who after seeing my earlier Thursday blog post about this year's Film Season, sent me the following link.  There will be a Special Exhibit that opens to the general public on the Friday Night of September 10th, which coincides with that night's Film Festival.

Well, I am pleased to see that Gerry' Exhibit is OUTSTANDING!  Yeah, I know...I teased all of you with photos of the exhibits at the top of this blog post, and didn't get to talking about it until here...but I wanted to 'tease' you into going to seeing this great exhibit yourself!

I shot 131 photos last night, most were on items in the exhibit, it is that good! Kudos to Gerry for Exhibit Writing and Curating this Event!

I suggest highly that YOU attend this Exhibit also, which is only open for docent tours hours. Please contact the folks that handle that for days & hours.  And even better, the tours are FREE!

I'll be posting more pics from this Exhibit, which is titled - 'Leo Carrillo: His Life and Legacy' in the weeks to follow, for those of YOU that are too far away to visit right now...!

So to finish up blogging about last night's 3rd Night of the 2010 Leo Carrillo Film Festival...The audience was as large in numbers as Opening Night.  The staff working the event were friendly as always, and the 'Hot Dog Night' was a great sucess...Enough to have it again Next Week!  The Cisco Kid episode was a good one with both action and storyline, and gave those who were new to the Festival last night a taste of that TV series.

Add to that the Opportunity Drawing Prizes given away at intermission were really good prizes once again! And the character study / action film that was shown...Made it a Great 3rd Night at this year's Film Festival! My thanks again to all of those involved with having this Film Season continue.  There were several hundred folks there last night that appreciated it!

BTW, if you don't know...I blog about this Film Festival every year because there is a comic book connection as well!

There were 40 issues of the Cisco Kid comic book title from Dell Comics, starting in January of 1951 and ending with the Oct/Dec 1958 issue!  Here's a link to all of those covers!

PLUS: Here's a link to the blog posts that we've blogged about in the past to show you what's at the Leo Carrillo Ranch, as well as what fun we had at the Leo Carrillo Film Festival in recent years:  Click here for the link!

Thanks again to the City of Carlsbad, and to the LeoCarrilloRanch.org people. Plus Gerry Streff for personally explaining the exhibit she curated!  Plus the Friends Of CarrilloRanch.org folks for making the Ranch Docent Tours and the Film Festival possible this year!  Yeah, I'm more excited that this place is in the City of Carlsbad, then I am about LegoLand being nearby!

Oh...We don't have any Cisco Kid DVDs for sale in our online store, (we are keeping ours for our own collection!), but here's a link to one of the better Cisco Kid Collections! Best of The Cisco Kid (35 Episodes)

And I still make this offer...If YOU are attending and see Tina and myself there...Stop by and say hello!  I'm usually wearing my straw hat and wearing one of my 'Comic Book Collectors Blog.com' indigo colored polo shirts to these events, (as seen at the top left photo of this post)!

PLUS...My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts, now over the 3,230 total posts in number! I do appreciate your continued reading and support of this Blog!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3233:

Tina and I are planning on attending the upcoming 3rd Annual San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Festival that is occuring the middle of  THIS month!

Here's the Press Release supplied to me by Grasiela Rodriquez, who is the Chairperson for this Year's SGV Comic Book Festival!

"Summer’s not over yet! Join the Nuvein Foundation for one last hurrah! at the 3rd Annual San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Festival!

Free admission to this event will give comic book readers and artists a place to learn from published artists to learn tricks of the trade!

The San Gabriel Valley Comic Book festival is back for a third year, taking place Sunday, September 19, 2010 from 11:00am to 5:00pm at the Club Cubano del Valle de San Gabriel (Cuban Club) in El Monte.

Comic book readers and amateur cartoonists of all ages will be interacting with artists from throughout Southern California, displaying the best in self-published comics, including works from members of the SGV Cartoonistas. There will also be workshops for aspiring comic artists!

The San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Festival is made possible through the efforts of The Nuvein Foundation for Literature and the Arts, its Events Committee and the hard-working volunteers at Nuvein Foundation. Proceeds from this event and others produced by The Nuvein Foundation go towards educational scholarships awarded to students in the creative arts and towards bringing other cultural events to enrich the quality of life in the communities of the greater San Gabriel Valley.

Refreshments will be provided by the Cuban Club along with a special appearance by the Fresh Fries truck, LA’s only gourmet French fry lunch trunk. The Cuban Club of San Gabriel Valley is located at:10960 Lower Azusa Road, El Monte, California 91731, at the intersection of Santa Anita Avenue, near the El Monte Airport.

I saw the Featured  Participants listed on the web site, and asked Grasiela for the full list of creators that are scheduled to be exhibiting there.  Here's her reply:

"Our artist roster this year consists of:
Rafael Navarro,
Geo Brawn IV, Raul Aguirre Jr., Javier Hernandez, Jim Lujan, Neil Segura, Grasiela Rodriguez, Michael Aushenker, Jose Cabrera, Jamie Gambell, Dan Smith, Sherm Cohen, Bernyce Talley, Lance Sawyer, Karl Altstaetter, Adonna & Arvie of Agimat, Shawn Granger, Dahveed Kolodny-Nagy/Toy Hell, John Narcomey, Rob Zailo and Acee Cruz."

She also followed up with what programs they will be having:

"We have 2 wonderful workshops in the works, <--I say that because one is by Rafael Navarro who is still working that out! Another workshop is "Drawing for Animation" by Raul Aguirre Jr., you can see and learn more of Raul on Man vs. Art <--The infamous blog."

ADDENDUM: September 14th - Additional persons who will be exhibiting there have been announced:  Dale Wilson of DWAP Productions, Aposcar Cruz, and Ted Seko.

I have blogged about several of the above creators before, (see the names with links for those posts), plus a couple are new Facebook Friends, so it will be nice to meet them in person!

I'm suggesting highly that YOU attend this comic con if you are in the Los Angeles Metro Area on September 19th.  You can't beat the admission price...that's for sure!  And after having review blogged the publications that several of them have given me at other comic cons or mailed to me...YOU are in for a treat at this Festival.  Especially since it is a smaller intimate con, so YOU can have more face time to meet, talk, and look at the publications before purchasing!

Here's the link to the event on Facebook.

And this is the link to the web site for the Festival.

Tina and I hope to see YOU there also...We'll be walking around, taking photos for this Blog, and check out the creators tables.  Stop me and say hello!

---------------------------

Thanks again, Grasiela and Javier, for inviting us up to this comic festival and for the info / pics that have been used.  I'll be sure to post a follow up blog afterwards on the event.  Plus any comic books / promos that we pick up at the Festival from the creators for possible review blogs!

PLUS: My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts, now over 3,230 total posts in number! I do appreciate your continued reading and support of this Blog!
