Our Take On...

The Wolverine
(A 2013 Film)

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3915 -     We are back home after viewing the film titled 'The Woverine'... A 2013 film.

First of all, this review blog is just my youngest son's 'Take' & my own 'Take' on the film.  Tina's review blog will be posted later.

Here's Vinnie's Take on the film:

I took in the film with my dad and step-mother.  I know my dad enjoyed seeing it, and was actually quite surprised at that.  As for myself, I liked the film being in Japan.  There was quite a lot of scenery in that country in this film.

I thought it was strange that people seemed to keep changing their sides in the film.

I'm hard time expressing today what I thought about the film... I'll leave thathat for my Dad to discuss.

The rating I would give this film is a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

I would recommend this film to a fan of the Wolverine.  For those that like action films, I would suggest seeing this film also.

----------------------------------------------------

Michael:   Okay... So now here's my 'Take' on the film:

I've got to admit... I wasn't thinking this film would be that much fun.

Okay, I was wrong!

The film's storyline was superb!  The settings in North America and then in Japan made for an interesting backdrop for the scenes that were shown!

Here's a link to the Wikipedia entry for the film.  Please be advised that there are major spoilers all over the place though, at that entry!

I was fascinated with this 'Japanese Love Story', which is what it mostly appeared to me to be...

Yet there was plenty of action in this film as well!

The changing of 'sides' by the players in the film kept me interested in the plotline, and there was actually a lot of character development in this 2 hour 6 minute film.

Here's my thoughts on the actors:

Hugh Jackman as Logan / Wolverine: A superb acting role for Hugh!  He looked tough, acted tough, yet was well versed in making this also a 'love story'!

Tao Okamoto as Mariko Yashida, Yashida's granddaughter. - Very well played role.  I enjoyed seeing her and hearing her throughout her many scenes in the film.

Haruhiko Yamanouchi as Ichirō Yashida, the head of a Japanese technology empire. - Another well played role, exept for the ending, where the scene was just a little 'cartoonish'.  Not his fault, but the writer's / director's responsibility.

Hiroyuki Sanada as Shingen Yashida: Mariko's father - I found this role to be somewhat predictable.

Rila Fukushima as Yukio: one of the deadliest assassins in Shingen’s clan - I liked this actress, and found her scenes to be refreshing as well as being able to move the film along.

Will Yun Lee as Kenuichio Harada: a bodyguard of the Yashida family and a former lover of Mariko -  This role was kind of strangely portrayed... Yet I did like the actor playing the role, just that the role was kind of 'chopped' in parts.

Svetlana Khodchenkova as Viper: a mutant, who has an immunity to toxins - Kind of a strange villain... I'm not for sure what to think about her in this film.  But she did play a key role in the film as it progressed.

Famke Janssen as Jean Grey: a mutant and former member of the X-Men, who Logan killed at the end of X-Men: The Last Stand - Famke played a vital part in this film, in her many short scenes.  Well done!

There were others in the film, but I want to post this blog ASAP.

I give this film a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale grade.  I for one really enjoyed this film starring 'The Wolverine'.  So much more than the earlier solo Wolverine film.  If you are a fan of Wolverine... You should check it out at a Big Screen near You!

~Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On...

The July 26th TGIF Jazz In The Parks Concert

With the Louie Cruz Beltran Band!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3914 -     Last night, Tina, Vinnie & I joined a couple of our neighbors and took in the July 26th TGIF Jazz In The Parks Concert in Carlsbad, California.

Featured was the Louie Cruz Beltran Band, as mentioned in my blog #3893, where I listed out the schedule of who was playing at the nine concerts this 2013 Season.

We had seen this Louie Cruz Beltran Band before... And were pleased to hear similar sounds and music again this year.

The wine and food we brought to this outdoor concert was very good, and Vinnie really enjoyed the stuffed mushrooms that Vikki provided!

The music was a Brazilian / Afro-Cuban style, with a mix of Salsa thrown in.

I'll be uploading a couple of videos to my YouTube Channel in the future, as seen at this link.

As for why I blog about these concerts... Well... I also sell comic books with music as the theme, as seen at this aisle in my online comic book shop, ComicBooksCircus.com.

We will be attending next week's concert, which will be featuring The Bayou Brothers.  See you there?!

Note:  Additional photos from this concert can be found at this Special Photo Album at my Facebook Fan Page.

Comic-Con: From Mini-Con To Mega-Con

As Seen At The San Diego History Center In Balboa Park!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3913 -     Yesterday, Vinnie and I visited the San Diego History Center located in Balboa Park.

That visit was to see their exhibit titled 'Comic-Con: From Mini-Con to Mega-Con'!

Back in July of 2011, Vinnie and I had visited the exhibit the Center held before, during, and after the 2011 Comic-Con International: San Diego.  I blogged that visit in blog #3462.

Both exhibits, the 2011 and this 2013 one, were produced from items from the Shel Dorf collection, that Shel had donated to the San Diego History Center in 2003.

Tony Kenealy had processed the original donation and produced a container list.  The collection is called the 'Shel Dorf Comic-Con Papers' with dates of 1951 - 2003.

The exhibit is in the front of the ground floor of the San Diego History Center, as seen in the photos to the right column.

There are two cases of materials shown, as well as a slideshow viewed directly above the cases.

Don't miss viewing the collection in the Library in the next floor below!  Stop and see Jane Kenealy as we did again yesterday to do so.

The collection includes Comic-Con planning, programming, and advertising materials and ephemera from 1970-2003.  Plus Shel Dorf and Comic-Con Committee paperwork and correspondence.

The Exhibit on the 1st floor runs July 9th through the 28th, but I was told yesterday that the Exhibit is to be extended.  Be sure to double check the extended date before visiting!

However... You can still see the collection in the Library below during the Library's separate hours of visiting, 9:30 AM to 1 PM after the Exhibit runs through its time allotment. (Monday - Friday only for the Library!) There is a cost to enter the Exhibit Floor which also covers the cost of visiting the Library.

Note:  Additional photos from our visit can be found at this Special Photo Album at my Facebook Fan Page.

At The Races...

On My Birthday & In Comic Books!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3912 -     Yesterday I blogged that July 24th was my Birthday, and that I was off to the races!

Well... My wife & youngest son joined me on this little adventure, and we had a great time at the Del Mar Racetrack!

Usually when I attend the Racetrack I win the first few races and then proceed to give the winnings back and a little more, the rest of the day...

Well, yesterday I won 5 out of the 8 races, ending with the 8th and final race!   That was a good day at the races for me!

Oh, and Tina won 4 out of the 8 races, so she was pleased also!

My youngest son, Vinnie, had never been to the racetrack before, so it was a new experience for him.

We had half price hot dogs & beer & soda for the day, and then at the end... We went to the Asian Buffet in Vista.

Not a bad day at all to celebrate my birthday!

Oh... And the connection of the Racetrack to Comic Books???

The photo at the top of this column shows Strange Sports Stories issue #2 from Nov/Dec 1973 with a dinosaur at the horse races!

Plus there are several more horses / horse race covers to be found at the Grand Comics Database!  Can you find them?  Try Fury, Mr. Ed, National Velvet, just to name a few!

For more photos from yesterday's trip, see this special photo album at my Facebook Fan Page!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3911 -     That's right!  Today is my Birthday!

And my thanks to all of you that have already posted a 'Happy Birthday' wish to me at my Facebook Personal Page

Funny thing is... I was getting used to celebrating my Birthday at the Comic-Con International: San Diego the last several years, 2008 - 2009 - 2010 - 2011, as the SDCC took place during my Big Day! But this year and last year the Comic-Con took place close but a few days different from my Birthday...

Oh well, I did have a lot of fun at the 2013 Comic-Con, as I mentioned in Monday's Blog #3908.  I always have fun there, as I get to meet comic book creators such as Jose Delbo for the first time. (See top right photo for a photo of him and me this year!)

I've come a long ways since the 1952 year, (see my 1st Christmas in the top left photo), and have a lot to remember and appreciate...

I do appreciate being still alive... We lost Richard Alf last year, (co-founder of the San Diego Comic Con in 1970), who was only 59 when he passed away, just a few days short of being 60 years of age... His passing affected me for several months.

Since I won't be celebrating at the Comic-Con this year for my Birthday, my wife and youngest son are treating me to a 'Day at the Races' at the Del Mar Racetrack!  My youngest son has never been to the races, so it will be an exciting day to introduce him to this sport.

Besides having half price beer & hot dogs today, (It's Wednesday / Diamond Club day), I'll probably end up a buffet at the end of the day.  I've got my mind on a certain Asian Buffet in Vista... But we'll see how many hot dogs I consume first today, LOL!

Oh, and if you are thinking what could Michael want for his Birthday... Well, I'd appreciate it if you would 'Like' my Facebook Fan Page, Michael D Hamersky On Comics, and let your Facebook Friends know about it also!

Anyways, this is just a brief respite from my blogging on the 2013 Comic-Con International which ended this past Sunday... I'll be back with more from the SDCC after coming back from The Races!

Oh... And in 2014 I should be able to continue celebrating at the Comic-Con International... As it starts on July 24th!  That is... If I'm lucky enough to be able to purchase a ticket online before it sells out!  The 2013 Comic-Con sold out online in 93 minutes!

~Michael
