My Take On... The 2015 Souvenir Program Book of the Comic-Con International

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On...

The Souvenir Program Book Of The 2015 Comic-Con International

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4034 -    I've mentioned already that I attended all four days of the 2015 San Diego Comic Con International in this Blog. (As seen at blog #4031.)

I also mentioned that the Comic-Con gave away a souvenir book, an events guide and a quick guide.

This blog will review the 'Souvenir' book only.

I had seen the cover artwork at the San Diego Public Library, when I went to see the 'Art of Comic-Con International' exhibit.  (As seen in this blog post, #4029.)

I immediately put the book away to read after the end of the Comic-Con, as the events guide and the quick guide were the items I needed to navigate the convention itself.

Now that I have read the book, I'm ready to review blog it here.

First of all, the cover... The reason The Spirit is on the cover is because 2015 is the 75th Annniversary of this character.  The Spirit was first published by Will Eisner in 1940.   Will passed away a few years ago, (in 2005), so Michael Cho was chosen to do the cover.  I was always impressed when seeing see Will at Comic-Con over the years.  Which is why I chose to read some of 'Spirit' reprints.   For those of you that like 'The Spirit', the cover should be enough to warrant picking up a copy for your collection.

Skipping a couple of pages on the inside... You would come to the Contents page.  The titles of the articles are presented along with the page numbers where they could be found on the inside.

The next important page, (after skipping a few ad pages), is the credits page.  There are a lot of people that worked on this souvenir book, as well as the Comic-Con.  They all seem to be listed on this credits page.

Then the President's Message is shown as well as the 'Welcome to Comic-Con' write up by David Glanzer. It is good to read this as you want to know what is being touted for the 2015 Comic-Con.

The first section is the '2015 Special Guests' section.  Starting on page 7 and running through page 23 with a few ad pages inbetween.  I saw several of these 'special guests' at the Comic-Con, and will be blogging about them in the near future.  In the meantime you could check out the photo albums I took of Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday events. I did miss seeing Stan Lee at his panel, as the line was too long for the hall, and a lot of people were turned away and could not get in.

The next section was 'The Craft of Comics', where seven top professionals talk aboout how they edit, write, draw, color, letter, and design comics.  The pages are kind of 'heavy' reading, and run from page 27 through 41.

Next I'm going to talk about articles that were of interest to me while reading this book.  That would not include all the articles...

Pages 44 thru 48 was on '100 Years of King Features Syndicate', by Brian Walker.  This was a well researched article. I found it to be a worthwhile read.

Pages 50 thru 54 was on the 'Birth of The Spirit' by Paul Levitz.  Also a very good article on the origin of this character.  A must read!

Pages 60 thru 64 was 'Will Eisner, The Spirit and Me' by Denis Kitchen.  Denis reprinted many of The Spirit original stories.  In this article he talks about first meeting Will, and what became of that meeting.  I had read this account before in a prior magazine, but it is of interest to those that would like to know more about that friendship.

Oh, and there are several pages of artwork submitted by outside artists, ranging from locals in the San Diego area, to outside of the USA.  Good interpretations for the most part.  Each article would have a few pieces of artwork shown after the article.

Pages 76 thru 78 was 'Confessions of a Robin and Catwoman (and Occasional Joker) Editor - by Jordan B Gorfinkel, as told to A.J. Frost.   Yes a short article on these Batman characters.

I'm skipping a few articles and getting down to pages 124 - 127. "Like a Bolt of Lightning: SHAZAM! The History of the Original Captain Marvel.  To me in the 1960s,  'Captain Marvel' was the character in 'Marvel Super-Heroes' comic book.  I didn't know about this original Captain Marvel published by Fawcett Comics.  You see, the Fawcett character ceased being published in 1953, the year after I was born.  I didn't see any of those comics until I became a comic book dealer.  The only other Captain Marvel I knew about was published by M.F. Enterprises from 1966-67.  So this article by Mark Lucas could be of interest to you also.

Pages 130 thru 134 is an excellent article titled 'The Interrupted History Behind Captain Marvel's 75th Anniversary', by RT.C. Harvey.   Very good.  You get this book, be sure to check it out!

Pages 148 thru 150 had 'Oh, the Inhumanity!, about the 50th Anniversary of the Inhumans.  As the Fantastic Four was my favorite comic book series growing up, I was involved with the Inhumans from the get go.  Charles Novinskie does a good job remembering the Inhumans in this article.

Pages 160 thru 165 is 'Steranko and the Origin of S.H.I.E.L.D. by Douglas Wolk.  I remember not liking the fact that this series kicked out by Torch series in the Strange Tales comic book back in 1965.  But with artwork by Jack Kirby, I couldn't help but continue to buy the series.  I always thought that Jim Steranko added a lot ot this series.  This article tells quite a bit about the history of the series, and the value of Steranko to taking the series to a higher point.  For those of you that love Steranko art, page 164 has his inking to Jack Kirby tryout pages for this series.  Not to be missed!

Pages 172 thru 176 has '50 Years of T.H.U.N.D.E.R.' by Michael Uslan and Robert Klein.  Those two were 14 years of age when Tower Comics started those comic books.  I remember back in 1965 that Tower had poor distribution in Kodiak Island, Alaska where I was living on the Navy base, and poor distribution in South San Diego / Imperial Beach where I was living in 1969.  Tower printed comics from 1965 to 1969.  This is a good article by these two.  Be sure to read it!

Pages 178 thru 179 had 'Wally Wood: The Road to T.H.U.N.D.E.R. by J David Spurlock.  A good simple one page article on Wally.

The rest of the pages were on more newer comics, and comics companies.

Then came the Will Eisner Awards nominations for 2015 & the recipients for the 2014 Awards.  Good reading for those interested in the 'Oscars' of comics.

The final pages, 'In Memoriam', Remembering Those We Lost In The Last Year', was a column I read in each year's souvenir book.  As I don't see all those named as passing within the year.   It is good that there are those remember each of these folks with an article and a photo of those that passed on...

Whew!  That's it!  Another Souvenir Book read and semi-reviewed here in my blog.

For those of you that didn not have a chance to pick one up at Comic-Con, I have several that I will be listing for sale at my online comic book shop, ComicBooksCircus.com.  Check it out for the 2015 Book, as well as previous years.

My Take On... Fogel's Underground Price & Grading Guide Volume 1 2015-16

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On...

Fogel's Underground Price & Grading Guide Volume 1, 2015-16

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4033 -    I've mentioned already that I attended all four days of the 2015 San Diego Comic Con International in this Blog.

Well, besides attending panels, I also hit the exhibit floor several times, and on Saturday I ran into Dan Fogle at his booth. He mentioned to me about the new edition of his Underground Price & Grading Guide, and that it was being published in two volumes this time, as there was so much data to print.

So I walked away with a copy of his Guide.  I've already mentioned his supplement edition that was previously published in blog #3148 back on May 28th of 2010.  That was a while back!

So, as you can tell by the previous archived blog, I have interest in this topic... Underground Comix (UGC).  Not that I had that many when I was younger, but over the years I have picked up and sold a few collections that contained UGCs.  So I have picked up info rather 'piece-meal' on UGCs over the years.

So this newest edition of the Undergound Price & Grading Guide should be what I was looking for... So it is the first item I've read from all the items I picked up at Comic-Con.  Here is 'My Take' on the Guide:

First, the price section.  The pages all have a normal sized font, which makes it easier to read, at least for older guys like me!  There are two columns on each page, so there are a lot of listings on each page.  At the top section there are four examples of UGCs shown for Good, Fine & Near Mint Minus grades.  Each title is listed first, then with the name of the publisher.  Then the issue numbers along with date of publication.  Many UGCs have been reprinted over the years, so each one of those printings are listed and shown with prices for the three listed grades.

I found this price guide to very informative and comprehensive, from A to Z. I liked the layout, the normal sized font, and the listings shown.

The Grading section started on page 29 and went through page 48.  There were more than three grades shown, as well as example of a UGC in that grade. Pretty detailed, along with a 'checklist' for each grade. The examples were shown only in black and white though.  Still the photos were pretty detailed...

Okay, so much for the Price & Grading sections of this guide. So what else was there to make this book so thtick?

Well, there were several articles! .

The ones that I enjoyed reading about were as follows:

Page 9 - The Preface by Dan -  Good to read for a first time buyer of this Guide.

Page 12 - Dana 'Ma' Crumb - good story by John Orlando, Jill Orlando & Dan Fogel.

Page 18  - Spain Rodriguez - Feature Film In The Works by Dan Fogel.  Good update on this film.

Page 21 - Underground Market Report - Several reports by UGC dealers.  Always good to know what is going on in the back issue sales!

Page 23 - Slab This!  Good interview on why there aren't that many high grade UGCs out there!

Page 25 - CGC - How The Company Has Grown And How It Works - Good article on the topic.

Pages 49 thru 64 - The first color section in this Guide.  Full page presentations of the UGC creators chosen and some of their works.  I enjoyed seeing these pages!

Pages 272 - 273 - Photos by Bob White of a 1985 gathering of UGC creators at Hi De Comics.

Pages 278 - 280 - Richard 'Grass' Green - Black King of Underground Comix - This was a neat article on Richard.  I had known about his above ground comics career, but this article about his UGC experiences was pretty neat!

Pages 286 - 287 - Underground Rock  and Roll Comics Revolutionaries - article by Jay Allen Sanford.  Good two page history of Revolutionaryh Comics.

Pages 305 - 308  - Origins and Influence of Zap Comix - by Robert Beerbohm - I've sat through a few panels with Bob discussing his knowledge of comics & comix, And enjoyed them!  This was a good article on the topic.

Miscellaneous pages, both in b&w and in color, on dealers selling their wares.  Interesting to see the names of those still in the business after all these years!  Plus a lot of new names who are now selling UGCs.

All in all, I believe that Dan has another 'hit' on his hands with this Volume 1.  I can't wait for Volume 2 to be printed!

Oh... My comix grade for this Volume?   I give it a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a 10.0 grading scale.

If you don't see Dan at a comic convention near you... Here is the link to where you can buy it from via the mail..

My thanks to Dan for letting me know of his latest publication!

The Highlight of the 2015 San Diego Comic Con For Me Was...

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Mentions That The Highlight of the 2015 San Diego Comic Con International For Him Was a Showing of...

Doomed! The Untold Story of Roger Corman's "Fantastic Four"!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4032 -    Yesterday I blogged about 'My Take On the 2016 San Diego Comic Con International'.  There I mentioned that the 'Highlight' of the convention for me was the showing of a documentary I had interest in back in 2013.

That was the time that the doucumentary was being funded by an Indiegogo fund raiser.  My Facebook Friend Carl Ciarfalio, who had played The Thing in Roger Corman's Fantastic Four film, brought the fundraiser to my attention.

I blogged about it, (blog #3876), and posted about on my Facebook Fan and personal pages as well.

The fundraiser ended June 20th of 2013, and there had been some followup on the production.  You see, the promoters of this fund raiser had needed to raise $60k to do this project right, and ended up with just $6k via the fundraiser.

So it has been slow going since then...

However, I also 'Liked' the Facebook Fan Page for 'Doomed!', and saw there that they would be showing the documentary film at the 2015 San Diego Comic Con International.

I hoofed it down to the Hyatt from the convention center on Friday late afternoon and waited for the showing...

There were several of us there for the showing, and all that came were amazed at well how the documentary was put together. I could tell that by the expressions and the comments made during the film's showing.

The film was well edited, and told the story on how the film was made, what promotions had been done, and how the 1994 film ended up NOT being shown in theaters.

The persons in the film told their side of the story, and I was amazed at how the bits and pieces fit together so well.

You see, I had met several of the actors at the 1993 San Diego Comic Con International when they did the promotion there.  I also purchased my copy of 'Film Threat' where the Fantastic Four were the cover story to that issue of the magazine.   I also obtained b&w photos of the actors and had them signed as well.

I also later picked up a copy of the movie poster for the film at the Los Angeles Sci-Fi & Comic Show.  It currently hangs in my home office on the wall.   .

A few years back I met several of the actors of the film at the 2011 Wizard World Anaheim, (blog #3405), and became friends with Carl.  He contributed a prize to one of the Black Fridays I held in recent years.

So as you can see by the above mentions, and others that I haven't linked to in this blog... I was really excited to view the documentary at the San Diego Comic Con!   I was not disappointed and it became the 'Highlight' of my Comic-Con experience so far on Friday.  Nothing else compared to it during the next two days of the Comic-Con.

I want to mention that the DVDs of the film are not ready for distribution yet, you can go to the 'Doomed!' Facebook Fan Page to keep up to date on that.

I also want to thank Marty Langford, and Mark Sikes for their time on Friday after the film's showing.  It was great meeting you guys in person!  Plus it was great to see Kat Green, who played Alicia Masters in the film, as well that night!

 ~Michael D Hamersky

Addendum:  For my ratings comparison between the actors in the 1994 FF film and the 2005 FF film, see this 2007 blog of mine.

Also, see this blog link, for a scan of the FF film poster I mentioned above.

My Take On... The 2015 Comic-Con International: San Diego
Mood:  not sure
Topic: Comic Cons

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On...

The 2015 San Diego Comic Con / Comic-Con International!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4031 -    Okay... It is late Monday morning as I start writing this. I'm tired, from attending all four days and three nights at the 2015 San Diego Comic Con International.  Yes, really tired!

(THURSDAY) I was tired in the afternoon on Thursday.  You see... I didn't prepare for this year's convention by walking every day two to three weeks before the con started.  That would have built up my strength to handle all of the walking that I had to do for this year's con.

Yes, I won the lottery by obtaining four day passes, Thursday thru Sunday, but without Preview Night on Wednesday.  This year I sat out going downtown to see the workers set up the outside booths, etc.  Last year I went down, even though I only had Thursday and Sunday tickets. I did do Friday also, for the outside events that didn't requre a badge.  See this link for that review blog.

So, as I was saying... I attended Thursday, and started about 8:30 when I arrived at the San Diego Convention Center.   As I was fortunate enough to obtain pre-paid parking under the Convention Center, I didn't have to arrive as early as I have done in years past.  There was a little line to go get into the convention center.  Plus when arriving at the top floor, I was immediately sent to a table where I received my badge & badge holder.   This was the fastest I had ever received my badge.   Good going so far!

I then obtained my laniard and bag plus the three publications given out by Comic-Con.  I then went and attached my badge holder with the laniard, and saw several persons discarding their publications they had recived.  Quite a bit went into the trash cans lined up in the 'Under The Sails' pavilion.

So I grabbed a chair and took my program printouts and matched them against the grids printed in the quick flyer guide.  Several panels / programs were up against each other time-wise, so I knew I would have to make decisions on those as each day came up.

Having prepared my panels / programs schedule for the next few days, I decided to check out the immediate layout of the convention center.  You will see the photos from Thursday at my Facebook Fan Page's special Thursday photo album. I then proceeded to go to the panels.  I noticed that the Hall H lines were overcrowded as usual per my Facebook Friends posts, and elected NOT to go down there for the one or so programs that I had interest.  I also noted that Ballroom 20 (the second largest room), was also very busy line wise.  So I elected not to enter that line either.

I made it through the day and ended up at the 18th Annual Kung Fu Extravangaza.  I don't believe I've missed a one of those during the years it has run at Comic-Con.  It was nice to sit down, at least for a while.  I ended up at the Floyd Norman Documentary panel at 9pm, and left there for home, as I was so tired...

(FRIDAY)   I was back by 8:30 am on Friday morning.  There were several panels I wanted to see and I only missed two of them, The Lost In Space 50th Anniversary and the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards.   The reason I missed the Eisners is because I ended up at the Hyatt at 6:30 pm to see the Doomed! Documentary that was previewed.  The photo at the top left of this blog shows Marty Langford, Kat Green, and Mark Sikes.    This preview was the HIGHLIGHT of the 2015 Comic-Con for me!  I really enjoyed seeing it!  To see this more of this documentary on the Roger Corman film, The Fantastic Four, see the Doomed! Facebook Fan Page.  By the time I got out of the Hyatt, I decided not walk all the way to the other end to see the Eisners, already in progress. Besides, I was wore out!   Here is the link to my Friday photo album.

(SATURDAY)  My schedule showed a LOT of panels / programs I wanted to see.  I didn't make it to all of them.  Mainly because of panels running against each other time-wise and the walking from one end of the convention center to the other side. Whew!  I don't know how many miles I walked this Comic-Con, but it was a lot!  I ended up the night at the Sails Pavilion, where I foolishly stood in a very long line for 'food' (chips, cheese and cupcakes), and watched the Masquerade on the screen with hundreds of others doing the same thing.   I left before the show was over.  Still tired!   Here is the link to my Saturday photo album.

(SUNDAY)  The morning started at the same time I arrived the previous days of the con, at 8:30 am.  It was really nice having underground pre-paid parking this year.  That is for sure!  Anyways I took in the Annual Jack Kirby Tribute panel, haven't missed any of them since Mark started it in 1994...  I then went to the Sixty Years of Gumby panel, and ended up just walking the exhibit hall floor until my last panel of the day started at 3:30 pm, titled 'Comic-Con Talkback', with the President of Comic-Con, John Rogers.   It appears that the ADA problems still weren't fixed for this year's convention, as nine out of the first ten attendees standing in line to 'Talk Back; were about ADA issues at Hall H & Ballroom 20.   For the first time in years, I left a half hour early, as I just couldn't walk anymore, and I had not found any last minute deals to make on the floor by 3:30 pm.  Here is the link to my Sunday photo album

As to my 'comic book grade' for this year's con... I gotta admit, there was just not that much for me this year.  Maybe it was because I was out of shape for walking everywhere, but this con is just too darn spread out to see it all now.  I walked both convention center wings, plus down to the Marriott's three SDCC floors, and the Hyatt's four SDCC floors.  I didn't make it to the Hilton, the Omni, the SD Public Library or the Horton theater.  Plus I didn't make time to see any of the offsite events like I did last year.

So my 'comic book grade' for this year has to be a Fine Plus (F+) 6.5 for me. Yes, it was great seeing all those I have made friendships with over the years, and actually... I saw more friends and acquaintances than in previous years this year.  Sunday's crowds on the exhibit floor was as bad as Saturday's.   Maybe I'm just a little tired / jaded... But this year's Comic-Con just wasn't the high level of excitement for me as previous years have been.  Note:  I have been going to Comic-Con for the last straight 25 years, when in 1991 the Comic-Con moved to the then new San Diego Convention Center.   (Plus my first Comic-Con was back at the El Cortez Hotel in 1972! ) Still, I know I'll be online next year when Comic-Con puts their tickets up for sale for 2016 Comic-Con.  Hopefully I'll be able to purchase some days if not all of the con.  Till then, I'll rest up and then train for walking the 2016 Comic-Con!

Oh, I will be blogging more about items I picked up at Comic-Con here in the days to follow, and also posting more items about Comic-Con at my Facebook Fan Page

San Diego Comic-Con International 1991 - 2015: Through My Camera's Lens... 25 Years At The San Diego Convention Center!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #4030 -    Okay... This is the start of Comic-Con International: San Diego week!

You may ask why so soon?   Well... Some pre-Comic-Con parties start Tuesday night this year.  I have invites to two of them.  Then Preview Night is this upcoming Wednesday night.  Plus people get into town starting today.

So I thought I'd make this special blog post as this year is the 25th Anniversary of Comic-Con moving to the San Diego Convention Center!   That was in 1991!   Whew has time flown by!

So I have already uploaded photos from my different cameras to my Facebook Fan Page over the past few years.  I'm going to post the links to each one of the different years of the Comic-Con, as shot through my different cameras.   There are more photos in recent years as I switched to digital and took more shots of course.

Here are the links:

2015

Whew!   And I have more years to upload.  But this blog is just on the Comic-Con since it moved to the San Diego Convention Center.  I go back to 1972 when I first sold as a comic book dealer at the El Cortez Hotel.

I am looking forward to this year's convention... It is getting harder and harder to make it through the lottery to get tickets.  I don't have a press pass, which only gets you in for free.  No special privileges in getting into programs, panels etc.  This may be the last Comic-Con I attend, as last year I was only able to obtain Thursday & Sunday tickets.  This year I have all four days, but missed out on getting Preview Night...

So if you can't go to this year's con, be sure to check back and see the photos I upload for the 2015 con.  If you missed earlier cons, take a look at the links above for the year(s) you missed.

(Addendum:  When inserting the links I noticed that a few of the photo albums don't have the photos I previously uploaded.  When I get a chance, I'll see about re-uploading them. Plus I have more photos that have to be scanned & uploaded as they were not shot with a digital camera.  So this is an ongoing proccess for me to do.)
