TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3245: Today's post is another in a series of reviews on publications that I found at the recent SGV Comic Book Festival that took place on Sunday, September 19th! The reason I am moving this review blog up in the stacks to post is that although I had not met Acee at a different con in July, (the San Diego Comic Con), I did see a promo at the 'TAT' Booth at that con. (The Antidote Trust booth.) I did not blog on this comic book at that time, but after meeting Acee in person at the SGV Comic Book Festival, I wanted to mention his creations in this blog... Here is 'My Take' on the introductory / promo issue of Workshop Presents: Graphic Novela Vol 1, #1:Front & Back Covers - I wondered why the back cover was mostly blank (white). After checking the web site for this series, I found out why. It is for sketches drawn by the creator at comic cons, or via the mail. The front cover has the two main characters illustrated separately, taking up half of the front cover area to the the right. Not a bad idea, if presented and utilized that way at a con. A good marketing plan when personally introducing the comic book in person! Inside front cover - Good layout telling what to expect inside. With weblinks to follow up on and an e-mail address. Presented well for a casual browser... Splash page - Interesting figure presented. Interior Pages for first story - The next four pages are the intro for this character, The Disinterred Agent. The next pages six through eleven are on Warshop - with a splash page on page 6. Page 12 and the inside back cover are more house promo ads for this series. The Back Cover has been mentioned above. So this intro / promo comic book is a 14 page publication. It definitely is a 'teaser' promo, to gather interest in the upcoming volumes. I found the Disinterred Agent storyline to be an incomplete one, as there was little in the way of text to read. However the artwork and coloring made me turn the pages to the 5th & final page of this story that of course is 'To Be Continued'... I found the Warshop storyline to be a little more revealing in the five page teaser. The artwork was more sequential in portrayal, and the coloring fit the tone of the storyline well. The costume was an interesting choice, and I found myself wanting to see more...Which of course would have to be in another issue...! My comic book grade for this promo / introductory publication is a VERY FINE / VERY FINE PLUS, (VF/VF+) 8.25 on a 10.0 grading scale. That's because it is basically a promo / intro comic with more to deliver in future issues. What Acee has done here is more of a 'teaser' publication. Which is okay for a first presentation of the characters, because he is not charging for the comic book at this time for USA residents. As mentioned above, it is a total of 14 pages including the covers. This is mre than a sketchbook, yet less than a 'split-book' comic book like the Silver Age Marvel Comics titles like Strange Tales with the Human Torch & Doctor Strange as the two features. On the right as I walked into the Collector Con area of the swap meet were a couple that I had met at an earlier San Diego Quarterly Con.
Also on the right hand side going down the opening aisle, was Sarah from TSG Entertainment. 
Talking about gaming...It was TSG that was sponsoring the gaming tent this month.
Robin Miller of Bobby's Comics was there.
Darren of Sky High Comics was also there... I've blogged about this store a few times in the past.
Still I was coming across new vendors that had set up at this month's show.
To the left are Michael Babalolu & Julie Brooks, owners of Funland Comics ARcade N' More up in Sunland, CA, (near Pasadena).
Last in this blog, but certainly not least, is Heather of Retro Entertainment Services.
"Yesterday, my dad and I went to the Oceanside Collector's Con. While there, we went to each booth, to check out the selections. At one of the tables were these people, Ron and Sheri. They are owners of SPLATEZ, and to quote, "Home of the coolest switchplates on earth." We were talking and joking around for awhile, and of the pictures my dad took, the picture to the left seemed to fit best with the atmosphere at this table. I got a Spider-man switchplate there, which was great, because currently, I don't have one. Now I'll have the coolest switchplate to cover the gap in the wall holding wires. Also while there, we visited another booth. The guy's name was Brian Bennion (sp.), and he used to own Top Flight Comics. After talking for awhile, and my dad purchasing some comics, Brian asked if I was missing any comics for my Amazing Spider-man Collection, as that was one of the topics in our conversation. So I picked out a few and he added them in the deal my dad was making, for free. Thanks Brian!

Now I want to mention Charles Balteria, who is the face and voice of this Leo Carrillo Film Festival for those that attend. 
BTW, the Cisco Kid episode on Friday Night was titled 'Haven For Heavies' - (TV episode 1951 #1.20). I kept looking at the female lead in the episode, and did she look familar, even though she was in western garb! Turned out she was Phyllis Coates...YES, That Phyllis Coates!

Upon arriving in Hawaii with Don Esteban Cordoba (Leo Carrillo), Consuelo Cordoba (Lupe Velez) finds herslef in a risque nighclub and due to her involvement with a group of sailors has a chance to become a beauty queen. Starring: Leo Carrillo, Lupe Velez and Bruce Bennett.

As I mentioned in last week's blog, this week was going to be 'Hot Dog Week' at the Cabana where they serve the food, drinks, and snacks! 
The three 'Opportunity Drawing' prizes looked pretty good again, so I opted to take photos of all three. 
I'm going to skip showing the 2nd Runner Up Prize, bu to the the left was last night's Grand Prize...Which included a Cisco Kid Episode Guide! 
•Sept. 10 – Sin Town (1942) run time: 73 minutes. After being conned himself into buying a bunch of dry oil wells, conman Duke decides to lead the town's businessmen in an effort to take the law into their own hands. When his plan backfires, Duke finds himself at the mercy of the town. Starring: Leo Carrillo, Constance Bennett, and Broderick Crawford.
And a standout as 'Laura Kirby', was Anne Gwynne, as seen to the left in a Scene Card! 
•Sept. 17 – Lillian Russell (1940) run time; 127 minutes. Closed captioning will be available for this film.

Two weeks ago, I was contacted by a Facebook Friend, Gerry Streff, an archivist with the the City of Carlsbad, who after seeing my earlier Thursday blog post about this year's Film Season, sent me the following link. 
I'll be posting more pics from this Exhibit, which is titled - 'Leo Carrillo: His Life and Legacy' in the weeks to follow, for those of YOU that are too far away to visit right now...!

Driving there, I found that this Collector Con was at an abandoned drive-in theater that is now a swap meet location. 
The line to get in to the area was a slow one...only one ticket seller. Although it only cost $1 to get into the main area, it took quite a while for the ticket seller to make change and distribute the ticket to get in. 
Other booths were set up, and I went in a systematic order through the aisles. Again, I had thought this would be 'under cover' in a hall of some sort, and it appears that a few vendors there thought the same thing, as several did not have tents with poles covering them or their goods for sale.
In addition to those vendors, there were also individual persons who were there to sell their personal collections such as Jason Harris, shown to the left, who I knew as the LCBS Manager at the old 'Comic Gallery' in Mira Mesa, which closed several years ago. Thanks again, Jason for the great deals on Saturday! And good luck on move!
So I walked over there to see what was going on before walking the booths one more time to look for any deals.
There was some action going on, but I was just there to check out what was also part of the promotional flyer's attractions.
