Kevin H Dixon, Known For "Gilgamesh"

Will Be Attending MoCCA Fest 2009

Kevin H Dixon... Sent me copies of his Gilgamesh comic publication recently for review.  After reading the three issues currently printed, I asked him about plans for a fourth issue.

He replied that he was currently working on the next installment of his Gilgamesh adaptation and that he was planning to have it available for MoCCA 2009.

I have not yet mentioned MoCCA Fest in this Blog, although I have blogged about MoCCA itself, and the several exhibits that have been there recently. (Click here for my recent blog posts on those.)

The MoCCA Fest is June 6-7th this year, in N.Y.C.  Kevin himself says "If you've never been there, it's definitely one to check out. Caters to the unusual, underground, self publishers and 'alternative' stuff".

Real quick.... here's a little about the Festival that Kevin and his friend Paul Friedrich will be attending:

"The 2009 MoCCA Art Festival will take place the weekend of June 6-7 at the 69th Regiment Armory at Lexington Avenue and 25th Street in New York City.  As the 69th Regiment Armory is a much larger venue, nearly 100 more exhibitors will be attending, and arranged in a more democratic manner than in previous years. The festival will be open to the public from 11:00am to 6:00pm both days. General admission is $10/day or $15/weekend but is only $10/weekend for MoCCA members."

The 'Gilgamesh' adaptation is just one of several projects Kevin has been involved in during the years. There is a link to his other works following my brief review of the first three issues of 'Gilgamesh'.

At first look at the cover of Issue One of 'Gilgamesh', it is striking how the artwork is both of a 'biblical' and of an 'alternative' or 'underground'  style of artwork to me. The inside preface page gives the reader a sense of how Kevin & Kent Dixon, writers of this issue are going to take this long told tale and make it their own. The story is illustrated by Kevin in a black and white interior page format.

This story is not for young children, because as in 'underground' comics of old, there are some scenes of nudity and sexual references.  However, getting past that, the story is one that is interesting enough for me to want to continue, and I for one was glad that I had the second issue on hand to read next.

Issue two's preface page brings new readers up to date as to what had happened thus far, although I would reccomend reading this adapatation from issue one first.  The black and white format continues in this issue and the story progresses.

Issue three shows on the inside cover that this issue and the two previous issues could now be purchased at lulu.com. The inside preface page does a good job once again informing previous and new readers as to what happened thus far in the storyline.  Please note: Issue one was published in 2006, two in 2007, and three presumably in 2008.  The storyline becomes a little more graphic, and thus my earlier warning of this publication Not being for kids is repeated.

As mentioned at the top of this blog post, an issue four is being worked on now.  I find this adaptation thus far to be one that I am interested enough in to want to see issue four.  Whether the storyline and artwork style is one that would interest you, can be resolved by your taking a look at some preview pages of this adaptation and also a few pages of Kevin's other works by taking advantage of the following link if you are a Facebook member. You can also find his work to purchase by contacting him there or by checking out his work on lulu.com, or by attending the upcoming MoCCA Fest as mentioned several paragraphs above.
